Chapter 4:
Yugi pet Nefertiti's side. "Thanks again Marik. I'm sorry to inconvenience you."
"It wasn't an inconvenience. Stay safe ok." Marik said.
Yugi got up onto the horse and nodded. "You too." He gently kicked her sides and moved her along. He rode her back to the palace and slipped her into the stables before starting to make his way out. Was it going to be hard to stay on the run without a horse but he needed to. He was officially a horse thief. That was a sentence to death.
"And where do you think you're going?" Yugi froze at Atem's voice.
Yugi gulped and turned to him. The man was clearly furious. He knew he was as good as dead.
"Well?" Atem demanded.
"I…" Yugi didn't know what to say. He was screwed. "Look I understand being a horse thief is a death sentence."
"Oh I don't plan to kill you." Atem said darkly. "Come here."
Yugi shook his head. If he stayed Bakura would be back and Bakura would torture him to death.
"Come. Here." Atem ordered.
Yugi gulped as guards surrounded them. He couldn't run. Slowly he stepped towards Atem. He had a dagger hidden on him. If he could just get it out without them knowing he could get out of here. Atem grabbed his wrist and slammed him against the stable wall. Yugi winced as pain filled his back. Smirking the pharaoh leaned down smirking and took the dagger smoothly.
"Planning to kill me?" Atem asked.
"No!" Yugi's eyes widened.
"Right." Atem tossed the dagger to one of the guards.
"No! I wasn't gonna-" Yugi started.
"Silence!" Atem's voice thundered. Yugi instantly went silent. "Let's go." He dragged Yugi inside and to his bedroom. He threw Yugi on the floor roughly.
"I..I wasn't going to try to kill you." Yugi said scooting back as Atem slammed the door shut behind them.
"You had a dagger." Atem said stalking over him.
Yugi gulped. "I just had it for self defense! If Bakura found me-"
"Bakura!? What does he have anything to do with this?" Atem growled.
"I-I um he had me…he made it so I was sold to you." Yugi said.
"Oh really?" Atem snarled. "And why is that?"
"He wanted me to…to kill you." Yugi said. "Steal from you and kill you."
Atem growled and grabbed his hair. Yugi whimpered.
"I wasn't going to! I swear!" Yugi screamed.
"Shut it!" Atem moved to a small dark room. He threw Yugi into it. "You can stay in here until I decide what to do with you."
"No wait!" Yugi yelled before the door was slammed. He tried to open it but he couldn't. It was locked. He pounded his fists on it. "Let me out!" he screamed. "You don't understand!" He slid down the door to his knees. He hated this. He hated being in the dark.
Memories of his childhood ran through his head.
"Mama! Mama!" Yugi screamed as he ran through the empty house. It was destroyed. Someone took all their stuff and threw it around. He ran to the front room and found his mother on the floor. "Mama!" he ran to her. "Mama."
He shook her. She wouldn't wake up. She was cold and wet with something red. He cried, begging for her to wake up.
"She's dead." A dark voice said from above him.
Yugi looked up and saw a man with white hair. He sniffled. "Dead?"
"Yes. Come with me. I'll take care of you." The man held out his hand to Yugi. Yugi sniffled and took it. He glanced back at his mother before following the man out.
Yugi shook his head. Little did he know Bakura was that man. Little did he know back then Bakura was the man who killed his mother. By the time he'd found out he owed his life to Bakura. Bakura raised him. He was taught from the start to steel and kill. He'd been sold many times in slave markets just so he'd get in and let Bakura in and they'd steel anything valuable. Bakura always took pleasure in the killing. He curled up and gulped. Now here he was being treated as an assassin.
'Who are you kidding? You are one. All those people you killed and stole from.' A voice in his head said.
"I had no choice." Yugi muttered.
'Sure you didn't.' The voice said sarcastically. 'Just as Bakura had no choice but to kill your mother right?'
"Shut up." Yugi muttered.
'He killed her and kidnapped you. He taught you do exactly as he did.' The voice said.
"Shut up." Yugi's voice rose.
'He made you an assassin. And deep down you enjoy it. You and your mother were poor. You know she could never take care of you.' The voice continued.
"Shut up!" Yugi yelled.
'She would have died eventually anyways. She was barely making it so you could eat. She would have starved to death.' The voice said. 'He did her a favor by killing her.'
"Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!" Yugi screamed just before the door to the room suddenly flew open. He jumped up and scooted back. The pharaoh stood in the door frame and looked down at him.
"Who are you talking to?" Atem asked.
"N-no one." Yugi looked away. He felt something wet fall on his chest. He reached up and felt his cheeks were wet. He was crying.
"Why are you crying?" Atem asked.
"It's nothing." He grumbled.
"Slave." He growled.
"Just leave me alone! If not just kill me!" Yugi screamed. "Just kill me!"
Atem growled and reached down. Yugi flinched away. Atem reached again and grabbed Yugi's wrist and dragged him out. He threw Yugi on the bed and straddled him. Yugi struggled and kicked. Atem however grabbed Yugi's wrists and pinned them to the bed.
"Enough!" Atem yelled.
"Screw you!" Yugi screamed at him. "Just kill me! Please!" he voice cracked.
Atem held him. "Look at me and calm down."
Yugi shook his head as more tears fell from his eyes. "Kill me."
"What is going on with you? You steel my horse, bring a dagger around me, and now this." Atem said.
"I stole her to get away from Bakura." Yugi snapped. "I didn't mean to. I brought her back."
"Ok and the dagger?" he asked.
"In case I needed it for self defense. I didn't know if Bakura would still be around." Yugi muttered.
"Ok that settles those. And now for the wanting to be killed." Atem said.
Yugi stared away.
"Tell me." Atem said.
"No." Yugi muttered. "Do it. Just do it."
"Why?" Atem insisted.
"Just do it! Kill me!" Yugi screamed.
Atem sighed and grabbed a chain. He chained Yugi to the bed.
"No! No kill me! Please!" Yugi screamed and struggled.
"No." Atem said simply. "You'll be explaining what you have to do with Bakura and why you want to be killed. Until then you will be remaining here."
"I'm not telling you a thing. You might as well kill me." Yugi said his voice emotionless.
"No." Atem said simply as he stood. He made to leave.
"No! Kill me! Please kill me!" Yugi screamed and struggled. He roared in frustration as Atem walked out and closed the door behind him. Yugi felt tears fall. Oh Gods.
Yugi watched out the window as the sun fell. He heard the door open and waited for Atem to walk over. Turning his head he looked and froze. Bakura stood there smirking. He paled and gulped.
"Hello Yugi." Bakura smirked.
"Bakura. How did you get in here?" Yugi asked.
"Oh don't worry I have my ways." Bakura moved to him. "A little tied up are we? Perfect."
"Bakura-" Yugi started. He was cut off by Bakura slapping him.
"Shut up." He growled. "Now you listen to me boy." He grabbed Yugi's chin and forced him to look. "You kill the pharaoh or else."
"Or else what? You'll kill me? I don't care." Yugi growled.
"Oh no. I'll keep you alive but only just barely. You'll be begging for me to kill you." Bakura said letting go of his chin. "Maybe I'll forgive you one day."
Yugi gulped. "I don't want your forgiveness."
"Perhaps not but you better be prepared for a job. And you will do it." Bakura snarled. He took out a pin and picked the lock on the chains. He looked at Yugi "Scream and I'll make you regret it." He growled before grabbing Yugi's hair and pulling him out of the bed. Yugi bit his lip so he wouldn't make a sound.
Bakura lifted him to his feet and shoved him forward. He followed Yugi out of the room and into the hallway. Yugi looked to see both guards dead. He gulped as the blood pooled on the floor. Wherever Bakura went death followed soon after.
"Let's get out of here." Bakura sneered at him. "You'll get us out."
"Me? How-" Yugi started before steps came. Atem came walking over and stopped steps away from them.
"Not a killer huh?" Atem asked Yugi.
"I didn't-" Yugi begin. Bakura grabbed him and put a dagger to his throat. Yugi yelped in surprise.
"Back off or I'll kill your little pet." Bakura snarled at Atem.
"Bakura." Atem said coldly.
"Pharaoh." Bakura smirked darkly. "Move."
Atem glanced between them before moving aside. "Let them out!" he yelled to the guards.
Bakura shoved Yugi to move but kept hold of him with the dagger to his throat. Yugi walked. If he cooperated maybe he could stop from there being any more deaths.
"I can't wait till we get home." Bakura whispered into his ear darkly.
Yugi felt a chill down his spine. He could. He could definitely wait.
Bakura threw Yugi into the hut they had. This hut had been his childhood home. Ever since Bakura 'saved' him.
"Now." Bakura slammed the door behind him and walked over to Yugi. "You need some more…training."
"No." Yugi struggled his eyes wide.
"Yes." Bakura dragged him by the hair to a room off to the side. He threw Yugi in and slammed the door behind them. "You will learn to obey me." He took him and chained him to the wall.
Yugi struggled and pulled at them. "Let me go!"
"No." Bakura said coldly "You'll be there for a while so get comfy." He smirked before walking out and locking the door behind him.
Yugi pulled and struggled against the chains. He screamed in frustration before going limp and panting. He wanted this to be over. He wanted to be dead. Sighing he let himself hang there. Well he'd endured Bakura's training before. How bad could it be this time? At least unlike last time he knows what he's in for.
His thoughts traveled to his mother. He imagined her sitting there holding him and comforting him. She was his whole world. His father was never in the picture. He never knew what happened. In all honesty he just assumed he ran off. His mother had stayed around. She had wanted him. He knew she did. She had to. It was how mothers were.
'How would you know?' his inner voice asked.
Yugi gulped. "Go away."
'Tell me. How would you know what a mother is like? You barely remember yours.' The voice said.
He shook his had violently urging the voice to go away. He hated that voice. Never knew what it was from or how to get it out of his head completely. Bakura only ever used it to his advantage. The man fed off it. Yugi knew he was in for hell to come.
Three weeks. He'd barely eaten in 3 weeks. Barely got water, and was still chained to the wall. Bakura wasn't playing around this time. He was really pissed. He'd tormented Yugi mentally. Forcing him to relive some of the worst moments in Yugi's life. He begged for Bakura to stop. Pleaded for his body to just give up. But neither of those things happened.
"You answer to me! I am your master! Permanently!" Bakura ordered at Yugi.
Yugi cringed away. He gulped. This couldn't keep going. He couldn't keep this up. "Yes."
"Even if you go to another man you ultimately answer to me! You do what I tell you!" Bakura growled.
Yugi nodded. "Yes."
"Then if I tell you to rob a priest?" Bakura asked.
"I rob them." Yugi said.
"If I tell you to let one of my companions ue you?" Bakura asked smirking.
"I let them." Yugi said though his hated the idea of it.
"And if I tell you kill the pharaoh?" Bakura asked.
Yugi gulped forcing his face to stay emotionless. "I kill him."
"Good. And if you fail me again I will make things worse than they have been in the last 3 weeks." Bakura growled.
Yugi nodded as Bakura unchained him. Bakura pulled him up. "Go eat and then I'll be taking you back to the pharaoh." He smirked.
Staying silent Yugi quickly left. He pulled what food he could and started eating. The voice was quiet now. It knew Bakura won. Knew he would do anything and everything Bakura wanted him to do. That's when it was quiet.
Yugi followed behind Bakura till they got to the edge of the paraoh's land. There Bakura got off his horse and pulled Yugi off his own. The younger man winced at the grip Bakura had on his arm.
"Now you go in and gain his trust again. Then when you have it end him. Understand?" Bakura ordered.
Yugi nodded. "Yes. I will end him."
"Just remember Yugi I am your only family. Your only way to live. Mess this up and I will be the one to make you beg for death." Bakura said darkly.
"Yes Bakura." Yugi said. In that moment he felt a small tightness in his chest. Bakura was his only family. Yes Bakura did kill his mother and kidnap him but Bakura could have killed him too. Instead he fed and trained Yugi. Kept him alive. He would do as Bakura asked.
"Good boy. Now go. And remember how I taught you to act." Bakura said.
Yugi nodded. "Play his sympathies." Yugi said before going down to the stables. He started stumbling and limping. Forcing tears down his face he cried out for the pharaoh. This acting wasn't very hard. He was covered in bruises from Bakura and had lost weight due to lack of nutrition.
It didn't take long for Atem to come running out. "Don't hurt him!" he yelled at the guards. "Get me Isis!" he yelled. Running to Yugi he caught him just as Yugi collapsed. "Hey stay awake." He picked Yugi up and carried into the palace.
Yugi sat in the medical bed watching as the Pharaoh and Isis talked. They kept their voices low but Bakura trained him to listen to that sort.
"He's been tortured severely. It's like he hasn't eaten in weeks and Bakura really did a number on him." Isis whispered.
"He'll be ok though right?" Atem asked.
"Yes he'll need steady meals and will be sore for a while but he'll be just fine." Isis said.
"Thank you." Atem said before coming over to Yugi. Yugi looked down before Atem could notice he was listening in. "Come."
Yugi got off the bed and followed him back to the pharaoh's chambers. It wasn't totally acting. He really was in a lot of pain from Bakura. Bakura had beaten him daily on top of starving him.
"Sit." Atem ordered pointing at the bed.
Yugi hesitated before limping to the bed and sitting down. He watched Atem warily.
"What was that about?" Atem asked.
Yugi rose an eyebrow confused.
"Three weeks ago. He took you. But you already knew him. What happened?" Atem asked.
"Bakura…" he trailed off. He needed to think this through. If he said too much he'd give away Bakura's secrets. "He is…sort of like family. But my being sold was not to his liking. He decided I had betrayed him. He came for me. Took me. And when he had me he beat me and starved me."
"I see. Well it's good you've come back." Atem said.
Yugi studied him. He was sincere. Yugi hated that. It made his chest tighten more. He hated that. Hated having the man's pity.
"You gonna kill me?" Yugi asked.
"What would be the point in treating you then killing you?" Atem asked confused.
"Sadistic pleasure." Yugi deadpanned.
"I'm not sadistic." Atem said.
Yugi laughed coldly. "Right." He muttered.
"What makes you believe I am?" Atem asked.
"Gee maybe the time you spent keeping me chained up to your bed." Yugi said.
"That was to gain your trust and tame you." Atem said.
"I don't need taming." Yugi said.
"And your trust?" Atem asked.
Yugi looked away staying silent.
"I see well I'll have to work on that. But so will you." Atem said.
"What makes you think I want that? What makes you think I want your trust?" Yugi asked looking at him with cold eyes.
"Because as of right now you're alone in this world. No one wants that." Atem said.
"Like hell I don't. Being alone means you never get hurt." Yugi said and he truly believed it. If Bakura had never kept him he'd have had a lot less pain in his life.
"Being alone makes you more likely to be hurt. Safety in numbers." Atem said.
Yugi barked out laughter, though it held no humor to it. It was cold and dark. "You really have no idea how the real world works. You truly are just a privileged child."
Atem hummed thoughtfully. "I know I was born into the palace life but I also faced hardships."
None of this was anything Yugi wanted to hear. All he wanted was to get his job done and be on his way. If he could do this for Bakura then perhaps the man would let him go. Perhaps he could live his life until death finally put him out of his misery.
"In any case you will need time to heal before you can begin working again. You'll stay with me and not leave my side. This way I can keep a close eye on you myself." Atem said.
"Wait I….I'm not going back to working in the stables?" Yugi asked.
"So you can steal my horse again? No. You will be my personal slave. You will carry my scrolls and workfor me only." Atem said.
"Yay." Yugi muttered sarcastically. This was going to be a living hell until he could find a way to end the pharaoh's life.
Hey guys. Sorry it took so long. Started my new job and that takes up most of my time. As for this current "crisis" going on. Please stay safe and understand the crisis itself. Please do not believe every little thing out of the media. I'll be working on caught in a war next! Hope you enjoyed this chapter!
