INTRO:
Wiz: Two iconic legends. Two blue heroes. They've met and fought many times, but now, it's time to settle things once and for all.
Boomstick: Who will triumph in an all-out battle?!
Wiz: Sonic The Hedgehog, Sega's Blue Blur.
Boomstick: And Mega Man, Capcom's Blue Bomber! He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle!
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG:
Wiz: Somewhere out there, on a strange alternate version of Earth, humans coexist with anthropomorphic animals, but this world has been assailed over and over by the vile Dr. Ivo Robotnik, otherwise known as "Eggman."
Boomstick: Why the heck does he need such a dumb alias when he's already got a name as cool sounding as "Robotnik"?
Wiz: But hope persisted. Whenever the Eggman hatched a scheme, one did not have to wait long for a certain blue streak to speed by. This was Sonic the Hedgehog.
Boomstick: (singing) He's the fastest thing alive!
Singer: He's the fastest thing alive!
Wiz: While Sonic has a superhuman physique overall, speed is his speciality. In fact, superhuman speed is a natural trait for the anthropomorphic hedgehog, though Sonic's abilities are far superior to his kin.
Boomstick: Wait a minute, all hedgehogs have super speed? That doesn't make any sense.
Wiz: Well, real hedgehogs are also nocturnal, not blue, and when they try to make friends with foxes, they get eaten. So, I don't think Sega cares.
Popup: According to character designer Naoto Oshima, Sonic's iconic Power Sneakers were inspired by Michael Jackson's album "Bad".
Boomstick: All right, then. To stop Eggman from turning all his animal pals into batteries, Sonic cranked up that speed, and weaponized it! He can crush his enemies with the Spin Attack, strike multiple times with the Homing Attack, go zero to sonic boom instantly with the Super Peel Out, and plow through hordes of Badniks with the Spin Dash. Holy crap! You'd think this guy would just, like, vomit all the time.
Wiz: He's also used a number of power-ups throughout his adventures, including elemental shields. The Aqua Shield is especially useful, as it grants him an incredibly high bouncing jump, and protection against his greatest nemesis.
Boomstick: Robotnik?
Wiz: No, water.
Boomstick: Seriously, Sonic, buddy, learn how to swim already, and save our ears from that nightmare music!
(The timer runs out and Sonic drowns)
Wiz: The blue hedgehog can also gain abilities from small alien beings called "Wisps."
Boomstick: They can turn him into a fireball, a yellow drill, a black hole, a bunch of stuff, really! Even a demonic Hungry Hungry Hippo!
(We zoom out to Wiz and Boomstick.)
Wiz: But before we delve any further, there is something vital which we need to discuss. It's time to figure out Sonic's speed.
Boomstick: (rolling his eyes) Oh boy, here we go.
Wiz: While he has boasted that he is faster than light, Sonic has yet to prove this in canon without the aid of additional equipment or power-ups.
Popup: Sonic can attack at light speed with the Ancient Light power-up, though this requires a semi-lengthy duration of charging energy.
Boomstick: Oh yeah, like when he connects to a trail of rings, but you can't take his bragging too seriously, he's still got some of that radical 90's attitude.
Sonic: I'm outta here!
Wiz: The highest official description of Sonic's speed labels him as hypersonic, or somewhere between Mach 5 and Mach 10, this actually isn't too far fetched. The game Sonic Unleashed records his speed, and he can reach a maximum around 3,500, uh, SPD.
(We zoom out to Wiz and Boomstick, Boomstick sings into a mike.)
Boomstick: (singing) Sonic, he's got an STD, Sonic, it burns when he pees!
Wiz: Assuming S*P*D translates to metric meters, given the game's Japanese development, that puts Sonic's top speed over 7,872 miles per hour, over ten times the speed of sound, and just over the official hypersonic description.
Boomstick: So, is that it?
Wiz: Well, it's possible, no, likely, that he's faster. In TV shows closely tied to the games, Sonic has dodged meteors, did this with a ten thousand frame per second camera, (shows him posing for pics before winning a race), and even outran lightning, all of which implies that he can move and react around two hundred to three hundred times the speed of sound.
Boomstick: How about that one time he caught up to a Cyan Wisp? He said that thing's almost as fast as him, even without its laser mode!
Wiz: That's right, the laser is a power it grants Sonic, not itself. Still, Wisps are incredibly fast. At one point, a group of them flew from Earth's surface to a black hole in orbit in the twenty seconds Sonic and Tails were talking. By measuring the planet's curve here, we can find that the Wisp aliens must've been moving around Mach 200. As Sonic is faster than them, this supports his cartoon feats.
Boomstick: Why isn't that black hole sucking up the Earth? That's what they do, right?
Wiz: It's more like a pseudo black hole fueled by Hyper-go-on energy.
Boomstick: Yeah...if I didn't know better, I'd swear you just made those words up.
Wiz: Its presence near Sonic does emulate that of a singularity, and Sonic actually outran its pull for thirty seconds. Due to chaotic accretion, black holes pull non-orbiting mass inward at thirty percent the speed of light. Sonic's clearly pushing his running speed to its limit here, or else the black hole wouldn't have pulled him in. With this in mind, it's entirely possible that, without additional support, Sonic's maximum possible running speed must be around two hundred million miles per hour.
Popup: The 2014 Interactive Annual is the only official source (albeit loosely via outsourced publication) that claims Sonic can run at light speed. As it is unsupported in canon, this likely refers to the Light Speed Dash. All official sources directly from Sega contradict this claim.
Boomstick: That's insane! The fastest man-made object in real life was the New Horizon space probe, which took off at more than 36,000 miles per hour.
Wiz: It took nine years for this probe to reach Pluto, but with Sonic's speed, he could make this same trip to Pluto in less than 24 hours.
(we go to Wiz and Boomstick)
Boomstick: While we're tracking speed, I've always wondered how fast I can chug a beer. (he holds up a can) Start the clock, Wiz!
(Wiz stares at him as he doesn't move)
Wiz: Are you gonna start?
Boomstick: I'm already done.
(He throws it onto a huge pile of cans)
Wiz: Ugh, moving on, even with this unbelievable speed, Sonic has far more power hidden up his sleeves.
Popup: While his speed has broken time, this required special circumstances such as using a Time Warp Plate in Sonic CD, or interacting with a void in space/time created by the Time Eater. Sonic cannot run through time on his own.
Boomstick: He doesn't wear a shirt.
Wiz: He can achieve the form of Super Sonic by absorbing an enormous amount of positive energy from the seven legendary Chaos Emeralds. In this mode, he can teleport large objects, survive planet level explosions, launch energy attacks, and fly near the speed of light.
Popup: Other forms, such as Darkspine or the werehog transformation, require specific circumstances not typically accessible to Sonic, making them unlikely to be part of his available arsenal.
Boomstick: But guess what, this isn't even his final form.
Wiz: After the emeralds received a boost from the Master Emerald, Sonic could achieve his ultimate state of being, Hyper Sonic.
Boomstick: He's got all the abilities of Super Sonic, plus total invincibility, and a Hyper Flash that instant-kills everything around him, oh, and he's definitely faster than light now.
Wiz: Unfortunately, good things don't last forever, without a steady supply of rings, these super forms can't even stick around for a full minute.
Boomstick: Sonic has resisted mind control from the Overmind, survived reentry from orbit, and blasted apart a mountain, this would need more than two hundred tons of TNT to pull off, and while fighting his evil robo copy Metal Sonic, they shattered this enormous stalactite! Holy shit, just look at the size of it!
Wiz: By comparing it to the buildings in this city, and applying the density of granite, the most common rock in continental crust, we've found that this stalactite must way almost forty-seven million tons, which means a break like this would need a force of almost two hundred kilotons of TNT.
Boomstick: Damn! He's definitely got what it takes to save the world from a madman scientist! Even if he is kind of a dick.
Wiz: Well, Sonic may be a bit arrogant, and he's certainly a thrill-seeker, but at his best, he's the definition of honest and heroic. He's used his powers to defeat Eggman time and time again, even against gigantic death machines and cataclysmic events.
Boomstick: Those cute and cuddly forest critters can rest easy when Sonic's gotta go fast.
Infinite: I'll show you how outclassed you really are!
Sonic: I'm in a class all my own! Time to put up or shut up, Infinite!
MEGA MAN:
Wiz: In the year 20XX, the brilliant Doctor Light would change history forever, developing machines with A.I. so advanced, it mimicked actual life. His goal was a world where robots and humankind could live together in trust and harmony.
Boomstick: I want all you watching to remember that, because right off the bat, Light's partner, Dr. Wily, reprogrammed the bots and tried to take over the world. Just the first in a lifetime of dick moves.
Wiz: To combat this threat, Light upgraded one of his prototypes, Rock, into the original, the classic Mega Man.
Boomstick: Classic, huh? What's next, Diet Mega Man? Cherry Vanilla Mega Man? Mega Man Zero?
Wiz: For one of those, technically yes, but that's much later. Mega Man is armored with ultra-strong Ceratanium and comes equipped with the Mega Buster, a literal hand cannon for each arm.
(Cut to Wiz and Boomstick, Boomstick is wearing a Mega Buster on his hand)
Boomstick: While its normal lemon energy bloops aren't too deadly, he can charge 'em up to tear through robot master ass like nothing!
(He charges up his own Mega Buster and Wiz ducks as he fires a shot that hits the wall, much to Wiz's annoyance)
Boomstick: Uh... meant to do that! There... was a fly... Uh, I got him!
Wiz: Mega Man's most notable tool is his variable weapons system, which allows him to copy the data of fallen enemies to gain their weapons as his own.
Boomstick: So now, he can cut you down with the Metal Blade, light you up with the Napalm Bomb, and burn you alive with Atomic Fire, which is twice as hot as the surface of the sun. He's basically got a tool for every occasion.
Wiz: Sure, he can shield himself with the Skull Barrier, reflect projectiles with the Mirror Buster, bypass armor with the Centaur Flash, stop time with the... Time Stopper, and create localized singularities with the Black Hole Bomb.
Boomstick: In case this little blue buddy needs a boost, he can activate his Double Gear System, which is basically robo 'roids! They jack up his power, his speed, or both at the same time.
Popup: While at low health, Mega Man can even use both Speed and Power Gears at the same time, though this leaves him in a weakened state afterward.
Wiz: And with his robotic canine companion Rush, Mega Man can access his Super Adaptor form, which grants him flight, a boost in power, and rocket-propelled punches.
Popup: While this Super Mega Man form cannot utilize most special weapons in-game, he's used multiple weapons at once in the manga, implying the former is merely a gameplay mechanic designed with balance in mind. This also applies to his Time Stopper weapon.
Boomstick: Mega Man is strong enough to lift a sixty thousand tower. He's tough enough to survive the gravity of Jupiter, the heat of the sun, and absolute zero. Plus, he's fast enough to keep up with Quick Man, who can dodge lightning and can get close to the speed of light!
Wiz: Mega Man has battled over one hundred robot masters and other robotic foes, including Sunstar, who was powerful enough to self-destruct and destroy the Wily Star, basically a small Death Star. With its size in mind, this would need energy equivalent to over seven trillion megatons of TNT.
Boomstick: Too bad all that power runs on limited ammo, though.
Popup: While Mega Man can potentially gain upgrades for infinite ammunition in the post-game of Mega Man 11, it's unclear if these are canon.
Wiz: Mega Man would carry the banner of peace across the world, fighting Wily's tyranny and spreading Dr. Light's dream of human-robot coexistence. And everyone lived happily ever after... until they didn't.
Dr. Light: He's the greatest creation of my career. And I will call him... Mega Man!
Mega Man: "Mega Man"... I like it!
DEATH BATTLE:
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set! And we've run the data through all possibilities! Let's end this debate once and for all!
Boomstick: It's time for a DEATH BATTLLLLEEEEEEE!
…
(Boys in Blue - Brandon Yates)
In a retro Green Hill Zone, Mega Man emerges from a Warp Ring, entering a new stage to fight a new Robot Master: Sonic Man. However, the image shows Metal Sonic instead. He looks around and continues his way.
Meanwhile, Sonic is running through the zone, recalling how Tails told him of a strange new badnik with a purple scarf: Copy Robot.
Eventually, the two blue boys notice each other and, mistaking them for their targets, prepare to fight.
DB Announcer: FIGHT!
Sonic charges up a Spin Dash while Mega Man readies a Charged Shot. Both fire, but Sonic is able to move under the shot and strike Mega Man, knocking him back. Sonic dodges more blasts, Mega Man blocks a Homing Attack, and Sonic runs to dodge more blasts. He rushes at Mega Man with a jump, but Mega Man slides under a blockage that Sonic hits. He then fires at the platform Sonic is on, destroying it.
Landing, he lands another Spin Dash on Mega Man, who punches him away. Sonic slides back in, tripping the Blomber, but Mega Man retaliates with a shot to the Blur's back. Sonic leaps up onto another platform, but Mega Man destroys it with another blast. Sonic Spin Dashes at him, destroying another platform in the process. He jumps to avoid more blasts, then sweeps the legs. He then begins performing his Down Throw until Mega Man shoots him off.
Sonic only leaps onto the platform and jumps onto it, making it fall down. Seeing this, Mega Man barely manages to dodge it. Sonic dodges another blast and hits Mega Man with another Homing Attack. Mega Man only opens fire again, causing Sonic to take cover behind a shuttle loop. Seeing the zone, an 8-bit light bulb appears over his head.
He performs his Figure 8 Peel Out and zips off, then turns around and runs through the loop, jumping off and hitting Mega Man before bouncing off various springs. He slams into Mega Man again, making him skid to the ground. Sonic leaps back up and performs his Down Air, but Mega Man punches him aside, causing Sonic to lose all his rings.
Noticing this, Sonic scrambles to regather them all again. Mega Man notices another Warp Ring, but by the time he does, Sonic manages to steal the chip powering his Mega Buster. Getting an idea himself, Mega Man heads towards the Warp Ring, catching Sonic when he Spin Dashes into him.
Once in Mega City, Mega Man calls in Beat, Rush, Eddie, and Tango, refueling with an E Tank and repairing his Mega Buster. Sonic dodges another Buster blast, but is hit by Tango's spin attack. He tries to Home Attack Mega Man, but he bounces off Rush's spring to dodge it. Mega Man grabs onto Beat and fires at Sonic from above. He dodges the blasts, but is hit by Tango yet again. He runs up a skyscraper to dodge another attack from Tango, then leaps off and bounces on Beat, hitting him with the classic Badnik sound. Although Beat manages to recover, as does Tango from the impact, Mega Man lands on Rush, who begins to pursue Sonic. Empty cars are blasted aside until Sonic reaches a rocky canyon at night. Sonic quickly turns around and performs another Spin Dash, knocking Mega Man off Rush.
Mega Man throws out two Metal Blades, one of them Sonic manages to roll under, yet the second makes him lose Rings again. He regathers them, but is hit in the hand with a Crash Bomber. He shakes it in an attempt to get it off, but it explodes. Mega Man throws out a Leaf Shield, but Sonic breaks an Item Box and burns the leafs with a Fire Shield before dashing at Mega Man, knocking him upwards before Sonic is hit with a Hard Knuckle, dissipating the Fire Shield.
Sonic then notices a Red Wisp and runs towards it, boosting him.
Colors Announcer: BURST!
The Color Power burns right through Mega Man's Flame Sword, but Mega Man hits with his Slash Claw when Sonic exits the form. He then follows up with a Spark Shock, but a Blue Wisp helps Sonic out after he's knocked into the air.
Colors Announcer: CUBE!
The cube tries to crush Mega Man, but he manages to hold it up with Super Arm before delivering a powerful uppercut to knock Sonic out of that form. Airborne, Sonic has a Cyan Wisp enter his body.
Colors Announcer: LASER!
The laser charges up as Mega Man readies himself with Flame Blast, managing to knock Sonic out of THAT form as well.
The battle goes on, with every single weapon, shield, and Wisp being used. Ultimately, Mega Man fires a Black Hole Bomb, which Sonic begins to run desperately at full speeds to escape its pull as the drowning music begins playing to build up suspense.
Ultimately, however, Sonic and seven gems are pulled into the Black Hole…
Before it explodes in golden light.
Mega Man has an expression of shock as Super Sonic emerges, and then gets hit full force before Sonic begins his Final Smash. However, before Mega Man can be finished off, Rush leaps in the way and uses his spring to bounce Super Sonic away. Seeing this chance, Mega Man transforms into his Super Adaptor form.
Super Sonic and Super Mega Man begin dueling all across the skies, with Super Sonic managing to collect Rings as he dodges the rocket fists.
The entire canyon becomes destroyed in their battle, but although Mega Man uses his Time Stopper to pin Sonic in place, he is still invincible and can't be attacked as it wears off. Mega Man tries to use the Power Gear, but still no luck, so he uses the Speed Gear to match Super Sonic's speed.
When Sonic notices his ring counter is dropping past 10, he sees the Master Emerald just nearby, so he speeds towards it with Mega Man in pursuit. Mega Man fires a Charged Shot at Super Sonic, but he manages to get to the Master Emerald and amplify the Chaos Emeralds.
Suddenly, a white streak separates Rush from Mega Man as Hyper Sonic flies by. Seeing the emergency at hand, Mega Man calls in Eddie and Beat to transform into Hyper Mega Man, then unleashes the full power of both the Power and Speed Gears of the Double Gear System. Hyper Sonic only charges up a super powerful Spin Dash…
And the two open fire.
The white flashing ball leaves afterimages in his wake as he collides against the massive laser, with the missiles and energy projectiles shaped like Eddie, Rush, and Beat do nothing against him. In a true beam struggle fashion, with Hyper Mega Man pushing himself to his limit, Hyper Sonic manages to boost right into his core…
And performs the Hyper Flash.
The classic defeat sound plays as several blue orbs float away. Sonic then reverts back to his original form, then does a Figure-8 Peel Out past a Goal Pole and leaps on top of a Capsule, freeing the animals inside. The classic victory jingle plays as text reads "Sonic has passed Act X." The Time, Ring, and Cool Bonuses add up to his Score, giving him an extra life.
RESULTS:
DB Announcer: KO!
Boomstick: I guess the Mazinger Z was no match for the Super Saiyan.
Wiz: Both DID have incredible feats, and could clearly hold their own even more so given the home advantage. But without it, it came down to the abilities and power-ups. With some either working or cancelling the other out.
Boomstick: Mega Man may have lifted a super heavy castle, but Sonic destroyed a stalactite that was WAY bigger and WAY heavier! And while Mega Man could keep up with the near-light speed Quick Man, Sonic was WAY faster than that Robot Master, having outran the pull of a black hole!
Wiz: Then there were their Super Forms. Super Sonic wouldn't have lasted long if he had no Rings to collect as his time was running out, but he could still manage to damage Mega Man, since his Super Adaptor didn't exactly allow for invincibility. Plus, Mega Man's Hyper Form couldn't exactly last so long against Hyper Sonic. All the hedgehog needed was one simple hit with his Hyper Flash, and the Super Fighting Robot would be fighting no more.
Boomstick: All because that Mega Buster didn't make that robot a Man, Sonic sure hedge-Hogged his chances of victory.
Wiz: The winner is Sonic The Hedgehog.
