Chapter ten
Both Steve and Catherine had been enjoying their stay, however they decided to head out of Sydney and the hustle and bustle of the city to a place that was a little slower, so they headed to the city of Newcastle which was about 2 and a half hours north of Sydney. Though its was still a city, it is the second most populated city in the state of New South Wales in fact, it was still quieter then Sydney.
There was a lot to do there, and they were going to spend a few days to look around the Newcastle and Hunter region, Catherine's parents had been to Australia and in particular the Newcastle and Hunter Valley area before she was born and had loved it, so Catherine knew that they too would love it as well. Packing her bag, she watched Steve as he did his own and she could sense that he had something on his mind.
"Penny for your thoughts Sailor?", she asked curiously, trying her hardest not to let the worry come through in her voice. Looking up, he smiled softly and reassured her, "I'm just thinking about Mom and Dad, and how they would have enjoyed knowing we were here together enjoying life, and not worrying about fighting for our country or some enemy". There were still times when he missed his parents deeply, and though he had a complicated relationship with them boy, they were his parents and he loved them.
Moving to place her hand over his, she smiled nodding, "I know, and they are looking down on you Steve and can see that you are starting to enjoy your life". She walked over to him and placed her hands around his shoulders, holding him in her arms, "How about when we get back to Hawaii, we go visit them, and maybe we can think of someway to honour their memory".
Leaning in, he kissed her softly and nodded, loving how she always knew what he was thinking and what he felt like he needed without him saying it out-loud. "Sounds good to me".
Kissing him back before she pulled away, she then went back to her packing and quickly finished it, and then took another look around the place to make sure they hadn't left anything behind. "You ready to go Sailor?", her voice was soft and calming to Steve, and he felt his heart skip a beat as it usually did when she called hi Sailor. "All good to go, why don't you go check out and I'll put these in the car".
A little over two hours later, they were finally pulling into a little coastal town known as Swansea. They were going to stay at a little B&B for a couple of days, before going onto the Hunter Valley and Port Stevens. The room they were staying in was on the smallish side, however it was beautiful decorated and had a spa bath as well. After having checked in and gotten the keys, they headed inside.
It was now around four thirty in the afternoon and they were starving, having had a big breakfast before they left and having nothing for lunch, Steve put their bags on the floor near the bed for now and smiled, speaking first, "How about we go get fish and chips for dinner, and eat it by the water, and then go for a walk around before coming back. We can then work out where we want to go in town tomorrow".
"Sounds perfect to me", Catherine replied softly, and they held hands as they grabbed their wallets and the key, and locked the door behind them. It was a little cool so she had to put her jacket on before taking Steve's hand in hers again and smiled as he pulled her in closer to him, leaning her head on his shoulder as they walked together.
Sitting eating their fish and chips when all of a sudden, Steve's phone buzzed, and he smiled as he saw a face time request from his sister Mary. Answering it, he chuckled when he saw a very tired Joan sitting in her mother's lap, and he did a quick calculation. It was around midnight there now, and he had to laugh softly, "So, why aren't you in bed little lady?", he asked as a greeting to his niece.
Joan yawned tiredly before answering, her head resting on Mary's shoulder, "I wanted to talk to my favourite Uncle, I miss you so much.. Are you going to come visit me before you go home?" Ever since Doris died, she had been more clingy towards Steve lately, wanting to talk on the phone and face time him more. It was like she could sense he was sad and missed his mom. "We miss you both so much too munchkin", Steve answered as he held the phone so that Joan could see Catherine sitting beside him, that woke her up, she squealed loudly in delight and lit up, "Aunt Cath, Aunt Cath, Mommy can you see it's Aunt Cath?"
Mary whom was really tired as well, she wasn't used to late nights like this, but Joan had insisted on staying up so that they could talk to Steve when he got to his destination. Mary had spoken with Danny and knew that Catherine was with him, but had decided to leave that as a surprise for Joan when they spoke, "yes, I can see Aunt Cath, but pumpkin, it's late remember, we don't want to wake the neighbours, so can you be a little quieter".
Nodding her head, she kissed her mother's cheek, "Sorry Momma", and Steve and Cath had to chuckle, then Catherine answered Joan's question, "I have it on good authority we could possibly come visit you before we go home to Hawaii". Joan clapped her hands softly and smiled wider, "I can't wait". Steve, smiling wide as well, had tears welling in his eyes as he felt the love even from all the way in California, "I can't wait either". They chatted for a bit longer and then Steve noticed that Joan had finally fallen asleep in her mother's arms.
"So, I had to find out from Danny that you two were vacationing in Australia together.. I was under the impression you were going alone Steve". Her voice was soft though and light, so he knew she was fine with it all. Catherine was the only woman he had ever dated that had met both Doris, Mary and Joan, and he knew Mary adored her. "Not that I am upset, because I love that you are there with each other, it makes me feel better knowing you aren't alone".
Steve let out a breath and chuckled, "Danny was just as surprised so don't you worry one bit.. I was going alone, however before the plane could take off, Catherine decided to surprise me by getting on the flight as well". Yawning a little, she smiled softly, "And so you two areā¦", she trailed off in a questioning manner. Catherine nodded her head in confirmation, "yes, we are together, and I'll promise you just as I promised Steve, I'm not going anywhere this time.. I'm here to stay".
Mary smiled happily at that and wiped a stray tear away. Her brother always put his work and career before his own happiness and those two were both the same, Catherine doing the same, so she was really happy now to see that he was not alone and had someone in his life. For Mary, all she ever wanted was him to be happy and settled, and to one day give her a niece or nephew. "I'm glad to hear you say that, I'm really happy for you both".
"Thanks Sis", Steve replied in response to her and smiled, "Now, why don't you go put Joanie to bed and then go to bed yourself before you pass out". He could see her starting to struggle too keep her eyes open and remembered back to when they were younger and she sometimes slept in his bed, begging for one more story but rubbing her eyes and trying to stay awake at the same time.
"Done and Done, I'll see you guys when you get back. Let me know when you are due in and we can pick you up at the airport, love you both". She blew them a kiss which Catherine and Steve blew one back and said their goodbyes and then hung up the phone. It was now a little after five thirty in the afternoon and they sat looking out at the water as they finished off their dinner.
"Even though Danny told Mary, she didn't seem overly surprised to see us together", Catherine mused softly as she took a drink of water from the bottle they had brought with dinner, "Mary and I have been talking a lot since Mom died and I've been over to L.A a few times, and she has been over to Hawaii with Joanie, we have had a few conversations about you and I. She loves you, and has since she first met you. I actually told Mary about you years ago, while we might not have seen each other for a long time, I did talk to her on the phone a few times".
Catherine smiled softly and leaned in to kiss him, "Your sister is amazing and I love her and Joanie just as much too". They sat a little longer watching the sun set, Catherine moving to sit in front of Steve, resting her back on his chest, his arms resting on her thighs, his chin on her shoulder. "This is one thing that has always been on my bucket list, being able to get around to watching a beautiful sunset with you one day", he whispered in a low voice. There was so much that Steve had wished for and wanted but he tried to always push it away from his mind for fear it would never happen.
Nodding her head, she sighed happily and rested into him a little more comfortably and smiled. "It's been on my bucket list as well.. Now we can bath cross that one off". They kissed softly and smiled while they sat and watched. They knew that there would be more conversations along the way, about trust and about how do they move forward once they get back to Hawaii, however right now they were two lovers just enjoying an Australian holiday without a real care in the world.
Author Notes:
Thank you so much for your continued support. I really appreciate how much everyone loves reading these stories of mine, and I hope you are enjoying this one. It's their in my opinion canon reunion and being together again, my other stories are more fantasies of how I wished it had gone, but this one could have more or so happened since the last we saw of them, they were jetting off together to somewhere unknown. Newcastle is my home town and where I live so I had to include this as well. I may not get around to everywhere straight away, I might actually leave some of the vacation to be told in flash backs once they are back on American soil.

Thank you so much, I am glad you liked chapter 9, I hope you like this one just as much. I'm going to spend some time making sure I get the next few chapters right as it is in my home town and I want it to feel authentic and kind of informative of what you can do here if you were to visit as well.
