Chapter 17: A Christmas present from a mother or two

Hermione stared out of the window. She moved her hand over her forehead and stared to Ron.
"So Snape's your father…" Ron turned away. "At least that's what Sirius thinks, yet he doesn't seem to remember your mother. Now you know, what more do you need."
"We won't be sure until we find my mother…"
"You heard what Dumbledore said, 'when Leyviena doesn't want to be found, no one will find her'. Or do you think that you are more likely to find her, if Dumbledore…"
"She's my mother…" Hermione paused. "There has to be a way."
"Unless you're willing to bring yourself in mortal danger and lure your mother out." He opened his eyes wider. "You're honestly not thinking about such a foolish thing. You could die and you won't be sure your mother would even find out you're in danger. It would be an unnecessary danger, don't you think?"
"Ron Weasley, why do you think I would do such a foolishly thing?" She stared at him. "I want to find my mother, without doing anything to endanger my life. If that is even possible, why do you think she refuses to contact me?"

"Maybe she really fears your judgement, Hermione." He stared to his feet. "After all she did leave you as a child, you have a right to judge her. Fear is a curious thing, even if the judgement doesn't exist on your part, doesn't mean she can't still fear it. It's also possible that there is a danger, that she simple can't come to see you, with Voldemort out and about."
"What does Voldemort have to do with any of this?"
"Well, she ran from him." He stared at her. "Maybe she's still running from him. Just a possibility. He might not be to his full power, that won't stop him from finding her."
"You think she's in danger?" She turned away from him. "Hogwarts is save, she could come to see me."
"And Umbridge is still around…" He added. "She would be pretty foolishly to get beside her."
"Ron, I'm never going to meet my mother, right?" She sat down. "I'm never going to meet my real mother and I'm going to wonder about her my whole life. Do you have an idea to find her?"
"Again, even Dumbledore…" He paused. "We should try to keep working on Snape, if we could get his memory back, he might know a way to contact your mother. Or a way to trick her in to meeting Snape. She did meet him before. But Snape could be the key to finding her."
"Snape, huh." She raised an eyebrow. "You're brilliant, Ron."

Ron stared at her, before he sat down in the large seat by the window. Hermione sat down next to him, pulling her clothes just a little. Would Snape be able to contact her mother? Or would there be a way she hadn't thought off to find her. Her mother loved her, she was sure of it. So why did she refuse seeing her? Was it really a guilt? Or was it a fear? It had to be one of them. She stood up, walking to the other side of the room.
"Hermione…" Harry stepped of the stairs heading to the dormitories. "What are you doing? Have you opened your Christmas presents just yet?"
"No, my parents only send me something." She looked away. " I decided not to go home, it would give me a chance to get Snape's memories back, anyway possible."

"Any success on those powers of you…"
"Hot really, I can hear thoughts from time to time." She stared her feet. "But I can't control anything around me, and I definitely can't retrieve lost memories. So I'm still not getting any further…"

Hermione thought about her powers, her mother said it came natural to her. To Hermione that didn't seem to be true, in fact it seemed to take a lot of energy to simple read someone's mind. Even more when she needed to read two people's mind at the same time. There was no natural way to it, it was all focus and work. Maybe she wasn't like her mother, maybe her powers were not as strong. Simple because of her father. Maybe her father had simple made her powers different and she couldn't count on tips of her mother.
"Hermione, it's about confidence." Harry replied. "When your mother said it came natural, she meant she needn't think about it, maybe you're overthinking this powers thing."

"I'm not, trust me Harry." Hermione replied. "I'm trying not to think about it really hard."
"And that way you're over thinking it." He reacted. "When people say they're not thinking about something, they're usually thinking about something. That's at least how my mind works, you have to keep your mind of it. Like doing a spell, it's an expansion of yourself, don't think of is a power, yet as a sense. Something you need…"
"Harry, it's not that simple."
"No, Hermione, it really is that simple."

She moved her hands in front of her, trying not to concentrate. She tried to do what she did when she used magic for the very first time. She tried to get that excitement, that need to do magic. When she was letting her magic come natural. She closed her eyes and thought about her mother. She needed to find her way in Snape's mind, yet she needed to forget that. She simple concentrated on Ron and Harry who were in front of her. And only a few seconds later she could hear their voices, without their lips even moving.
"Hermione…" She was surprised by Harry's sudden voice, she turned to Harry to only notice a flying horse right in front of the window. She had never seen one before, she had read about them in Greek magic books, but never did she hope to see them. They were transfigured animals. On its back it was carrying to big packages, one addressed to Harry and one to Hermione. They were tightly wrapped in gold paper. They opened the window and grabbed the packages from the animal. It seemed to fly away right away. Hermione stared at the writing on a small note.

Dearest Hermione
Happy Christmas, I wish I could be with you right now. Yet times are dangerous and you are safe at Hogwarts. I demand you not to look for me, simple because I can't guaranty I'll be able to keep you as safe as you should be. Listen to your teachers, mostly your grandmother. Hermione, when she says she knows better, it's really true. I had to learn the hard way, school is an exciting time in your life. Don't do anything risqué.
Enjoy your Christmas present. I hope it will come in useful.

Your mom.

She opened up the package to find a new cauldron and all kinds of rare potion ingredients. On the far left she found something she didn't recognize. It looked like some kind of bended piece of glass. Almost like a wand formed out of a strong glass. She had no idea what use it had.
"Your mother is giving you a big tip." Ron smiled. "She's telling you that Snape's your father. Potion ingredients has to mean something."
"I'm afraid Ron's right." Harry responded while he stared as his present. He took the letter from the packet. It started:

Dearest Harry

I'm sure you hadn't expected to hear from me, I can tell you I've been pretty close your entire life. I'm very sorry that you had to deal with my sister, She's quit an uncanny person. She means well, she mostly does. I regret not coming to you, I hope you don't blame me. There are still dangers in this world that I wasn't able to face, I can tell you I was always close.
I hope you like your Christmas present.

Love

Lily, your mother.

"Does it say Lily, your mother?" Ron stared at Harry. "So this proves that she's alive as well?"
Harry took the present in both of his hands. His mother had handpicked this for him. Something he liked, he couldn't believe that his mother was still alive, that she could send him things for Christmas. What did she mean by being close? Had she been in his life in a disguise? He wondered why she never told him, Voldemort had not been alive. Than why would she not tell him? He felt a sense of regret, not having her around. He slowly opened the package, inside there was a were things for quidditch. There was also a book of Quidditch through the ages. There were also a few books on books about defence against the dark arts.
"They're both alive and well." Hermione smiled. "Maybe we should have followed that Pegasus."

Yet when she looked outside there was no horse with wings was already gone. There was nothing there, Hermione was disappointed, she turned around to Harry.
"Did we just miss our chance?" She shook her head. "We can't just have missed our chance…"
"There's no way it was directly going to them." Ron replied. "It would be too dangerous. We couldn't have found them that way."
"So we'll go through Snape…"

"I guess so." Hermione replied.
