-We are (Not) Ready-
"Please stand clear of blast doors and prepare for descent," A perky female voice echoed through the large chamber as an enormous set of doors slowly closed shut behind the blue car which looked like it had been through a war zone.
Technically it kind of had.
"Do not exit your vehicle during your journey through the Geofront. The estimated time of arrival at the station is 20 minutes. Welcome to NERV."
Judy watched the doors shut out the light of the outside world before several dim red lights activated. They weren't meant to illuminate the whole room but it was enough to reveal a large logo on the blast door. Half a fig leaf with the words N.E.R.V where the other half of the leaf should be.
Underneath the logo was some red text.
"God's In His Heaven, Alls Right With The World"
The floor underneath the car began to shake and move downwards at which point Judy realized they were on a large mobile elevator. Not one that just went downward though, the angle indicated they were descending at a steady degree.
As the walls fell away Judy blinked a few times as she gathered they were actually on a mobile platform rather than a simple car elevator. Several platforms were ahead of them and Judy surmised it was like some kind of train.
Once the understanding of how they were traveling passed Judy realized she still had no idea where they were going. If anything she became slightly more panicked as she began to think things through.
Where were they? What the hell is NERV? What is Misato's role in all this?
"Here," Misato muttered casually as she passed Judy a red folder with the fig leaf logo she had seen on the door. "You are gonna need some of this to get around the Geofront."
"Geofront?" Judy asked as she looked over at Misato and took the large folder into her paws and opened it up.
There was an ID inside with her name on it.
It had several warnings saying how it was temporary and would need to be turned over when a permanent ID was ready for Judy.
There was also some scary-sounding writing on a piece of paper inside the folder.
A lot of legal wording about how anything Judy witnessed was deemed classified and if she revealed anything NERV felt was sensitive they would execute….
Wait what?!
"What the hell is all this?" Judy asked as she looked up from the folder and raised the piece of paper with all sorts of dangerous writing.
"Just a simple warning saying if you blab they will put a bullet between those pretty eyes of yours," Misato said casually as if talking about the weather.
"Who?"
"Probably NERV special recon or something…or maybe a janitor. They work really hard around here so even they deserve some fun every once and a…"
Misato trailed off as she noticed how Judy's eyes twitched and her lower lip quivered.
"Judy I am kitting. Oh my gosh, they warned me you may be wound uptight," Misato said as she reached over and gave Judy's shoulder a squeeze. "Listen I will put it simply. Everything you see in here doesn't exist ok?"
Judy just nodded but didn't exactly feel much better. Her gaze went back to the folder only to go to Misato once more.
She was about to ask another question but was cut off by a blinding light that suddenly filled the interior of the battered blue car.
Judy blinked a few times as her eyes adjusted on for them to widen.
The cramped tunnel had vanished and the train was now traveling down a large glass tube that had been built inside what appeared to be an enormous cavern.
Judy had never seen anything like it. Sure she had been in a cave before but not one so large that there was a series of open fields in the distance and what appeared to be a lake on one end.
The natural aspects of the cavern weren't all that fascinated the young doe.
A large black and futuristic-looking pyramid sat at the edge of the lake, surrounded by several large structures and roads.
Above the pyramid sat another truly amazing unbelievable sight.
Several buildings seemed to be hanging from the ceiling of the cavern. All of them secured to the ceiling.
These weren't just simple 4 story buildings that Judy was used to back home.
No these were skyscrapers that would have normally been reaching up to the heavens had they been built on the surface.
"Welcome to the Geofront," Misato said from her seat next to Judy, smiling at the fascinated look on the doe's face.
"It's amazing, how did you all do this?"
"I would imagine some very smart and talented mammals got together and just started building," Misato said playfully.
Judy turned to her chaperone, her ears raised up as she gave the painted dog a disbelieving look.
It was obvious that she knew more than she was letting on.
As the canine and bunny continued to travel through the geofront an army of mammals were busy hurrying about the facility which was still on a high alert.
Deep within the geofront's pyramid the main control group for NERV's operation scrambled to try and get some kind of imagery from the surface above.
The N2 mine they had used one the monstrous angel above had systematically wiped out all forms of camera feed and long-range imagery which meant the mammals in the control room were currently working blind.
On a raised, central platform looking over at the blank screens sat several confident-looking mammals in green military uniforms.
"All that show and all it took was a single N2 mine to solve the problem," a tiger chuckled as he leaned back in his chair.
"Dropping a nuke isn't always the best option but if it handles the angels so easily then it looks like this war may be over sooner than these scientists predicted," a jackal let out a sigh.
A large rhino sitting at the center of the viewing table leaned back, his chair giving an audible protest before he turned and gave a smug look at two mammals sitting at a table a few feet behind the military representatives.
"Looks like you are out of luck Dr. Ikari," the rhino said in a deep and confident tone.
The brown rabbit sitting at the table behind them gave no response. His eyes were hidden by a pair of large green-tinted glasses, his paws folded in front of his mouth.
Not even a budge? Never playing poker with this guy that's for sure.
Someone in the large and open control announced that they were receiving images from the blast zone.
The representatives from the military all turned to the screen excitedly. Knowing that they were about to receive images of their apparent victory.
Several large holographic screens suddenly appeared on the vacant side of the cavernous room.
Static filled the images for a few moments before the room was cast in a warm orange glow as they received footage from where they had dropped the weapon of mass destruction.
Everyone in the room was silent at first before a series of gasps and eager mumblings began to permeate throughout the control area.
Sitting in the center of the screen was the angel.
It was still standing.
Sure it looked like it had been through hell but it was not out of the fight yet.
"What the fuck?!" The jackal barked, losing his cool as he stared at the enemy who had just survived the mammal's strongest weapon.
"Get me command," the tiger nearly shouted into a red phone he had pressed to his head.
"It can't be…" the rhino muttered as he slowly stood up.
Had he looked over his shoulder he would have noticed the bunny he had just been mocking give off the smallest of smiles.
A coyote with graying fur but a pristine nerv command uniform hid his emotions as well as he stood next to the commander of NERV.
That didn't stop him though from speaking up.
"So it's as we predicted, it would slow them down but not stop them."
"Yes," the rabbit sitting at the main desk said, almost sounding excited. "It would appear the Eva's are our best hope."
"And the status on our newest pilot?"
"I sent the Major to pick up our newest recruit, they will be here shortly."
"And does she know?"
"She will be told what she needs to know, and right now all she needs to know is-"
"Help?" Judy asked as she exited Misato's car which was now parked in an underground parking area deep inside the NERV arrival station. "What kind of help?"
Misato smirked as she placed a paw on Judy's shoulder and led her down the parking area and towards a bank of elevators.
"The kind that might earn you a kiss at the end of the day."
"Wait what?!"
"Kidding," Misato said with a laugh. "But seriously, you like helping right?"
"Well of course I want to help but what can I do that a big operation like this can't?"
"You would be surprised Judy, very surprised."
"Dr. Ikari…" The rhino representing the local military grunted as he glared at the rabbit behind the dark green glasses. "At this time operational control is being pawed over to NERV."
"We have been commanded to inform you that if you need any additional assistance from the military that you just need to ask," The tiger next to the seething rhino managed to get out through gritted teeth.
"Try not to screw this up or all mammals will pay the price," The jackal said smugly before the platform the representatives were sitting on slowly lowered into the floor.
The floor closed over the desk as it vanished and with that, NERV was in control.
"Could they have sounded any angrier?" The coyote standing next to Dr. Ikari grumbled.
"They can be angry all they want Fuyutsuki," The rabbit still sitting at the desk said, the corner of his lips curling. "All that matters now is they are out of the way. The government will now have a chance to witness what NERV is capable of which should ensure less interference in the future."
"Or more oversight," Fuyutsuki said, glancing down at his friend and giving him a smirk.
"Either way we now have the ability to use an Eva out in the field," Dr. Ikari said as he stood up from his desk and casually strolled over to a door situated just behind the main control platform. Without even looking back he gave a quick set of orders. "You are in charge of this until I return."
"Going to see your niece?" Fuyutsuki asked as he looked up at the screens where the intimidating sight of the angel stared back.
"I am going to see the pilot," The rabbit said as the door in front of him quickly slid open. "I have read her file but I have a feeling even with her natural bravery it will take some coaxing to get her to pilot Unit 1."
With that, the rabbit stepped through the threshold and into an elevator that would take him into one of the most restricted parts of the facility where a certain gray bunny was currently being led.
Little did they both know, this reunion was about to be interrupted.
