Constellation or Flower?

October 2007

"Does it have to be a constellation?" His eyes lifted from the daily prophet he was reading. They had just relocated to her cottage a few days ago. They both missed the warm sun of Italy but knew that she shouldn't be traveling this far any later in the pregnancy.

Hermione's new choice of reading was books with names. There was no use in reminding her of long-standing family traditions and the names that would naturally come to mind.

"It would be nice for my son to follow the tradition, being the only ones left."

"Teddy Lupin is your second cousin and very much a Black."

"Named after his grandfather, raised by Potter. I doubt he will ever have an interest in fulfilling any of the Black traditions." He put the prophet down, to underline his statement with a long look.

"What about flowers?"

"Why?" His voice was a pitch higher than he deemed manly, but it was too late.

"Your mother's name is flowery."

He wished he had picked up the newspaper again, but now there was no way of hiding his face falling.

"It would be a family thing."

"It's not a thing, it's a tradition." He rubbed his forehead. Why again, did he marry a woman, who spoke for her own wishes, rather than having him be the ruler over the household?

"Let's make a new tradition then. We both owe a lot to your mother. Much more than any of us owe to most of those named after constellations."

"I'm named after a constellation."

Her face softened and she stood to waddle over. A finger on the page of the book she was currently reading. She waved for him to push his chair back and finally sat on his lap. It still surprised him at times to experience the natural things she did as the woman by his side. Especially when they were things no pureblood witch would have done.

"And you are the brightest of them all." She kissed his cheek, before opening the book. "I really like Ivy. Ivy wreaths are given to newlywed couples to symbolize faithfulness. Considering that we basically got pregnant right away, that's perfect."

She beamed at him.

"That's a girl's name."

"Correct."

"Malfoys don't have girls."

"Not correct."

"According to who?"

"Me, Hermione Malfoy."

"You don't know what we are having."

"I told you, I feel strongly that it's a girl." That's when he saw his chance. It would be easy enough, since she had been convinced for months that his heir was in fact an heiress.

"Alright, I get the boy name and you the girl name."

"You are going to regret this." She smirked at him, taking his hand to place against her belly. His face softened when he could feel the small kicks. He wrapped his arms more tightly around her as she placed her head on his shoulder. "What's the boy name?"

"Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy."
