Ivy Jean Malfoy

December 2007

He stared at the tiny baby in his arms. She was precious, a little bit of heaven right here looking at him through grey eyes. It was easy for him to hold her in just one of his arms, which left his other hand free to caress the small rosy cheeks with one of his fingers. Her little body seemed to be as exhausted as her mother's and her eyes slowly shut.

His mother had told him to put her in the bassinet that had been specially made for her, but he wasn't ready to let go. So, he sat on his side of the bed, careful to not wake either of them. His wife's curls were a mess around her head, and she wore her most comfortable sleepwear. Yet he would have sworn she had never been more beautiful.

And of course, the tiny wonder in his arms. The baby who was most certainly not a boy, he had checked multiple times. First Malfoy girl to be born in enough generations that there wasn't any record of another girl if there ever had been one.

His mother had been thrilled at the announcement. Very traditional for Malfoys it had been a house birth at the cottage. Of course, Narcissa had been there, a very professional healer and Molly Weasely. Merlin, the woman had to know how to have a baby at this point. Between her children and grandchildren, she had been attending plenty of births.

"You make a cute dad." She rolled over and raised one of her arms to caress the little cheek as well. "Sorry about the name."

"I'll live. Father might not." He grimaced at the thought of Lucius hearing about his son's newest failure: female offspring.

"He can think of poison ivy if it makes him feel any better." He smiled at her, before focusing on the baby again. Her head still had weird dents, but Molly had assured him those would go away. And really it was her little face that kept his attention.

"Have you decided on a middle name?"

"Nothing quite sounded right, and Ivy Malfoy sounds nice."

"May I make a suggestion?"

"As long as it's not Scorpia." He rolled his eyes at her.

"Jean." He glanced at his wife. "Ivy Jean Malfoy."

"You think?"

"Well, if she gets the flowers and last name from my family, she should be getting something from you." He was pleased to see the smile spread on her face.

"Do you want to hold her?"

Hermione shook her head, before stretching and sitting up. He moved his free arm around her and pulled her closer.

"I love you."
