"Don't worry, Alec doesn't bite" Izzy said with a bit of a chuckle as she saw Clary's expression at Alec's offer to walk her to class and Clary just nodded. Well she hadn't thought about him biting her head off before, but now she sure was. Or maybe he will just kill her, he looks like he would murder someone.
Clary just shrugged a 'Thanks' as they all separated, she and Alec walked in awkward silence all the way and Clary wondered if Alec was thinking of ways to kill her right now. There could be so many ways and he seemed the imaginative type. When they were outside of Art Class Clary mumbled out a "Thanks" and moved to try and slip to class quickly.
But before she could walk in, Alec stopped her. Oh she knew it, he was going to kill her.
"You can't tell anyone what you saw today" Alec said, firmly, thickly but his eyes showed how panicked he looked, completely panicked and worried about what she would do or say.
"I won't tell.. What don't you want me to tell exactly?" Clary asked unsure. Alec's hand rested on the door to her class and he leaned down, his black hair covering the side of his face as it fell into his right eye. Clary almost could appreciate the beauty of Alec and would have liked to draw him, but his stern expression worried her.
"What you saw, in the janitor's closet. You can't tell anyone" Alec breathed out.
Why would she tell anyone she saw him in a closet with another guy she didn't even know the name of? And why would he care? It's not like she caught them with their pants around their ank- oh! Ooh. Clary realized quickly. "Are you gay Alec?" she asked without thinking.
Alec hand covered her mouth as he looked around but no one was in the hall. "I'm not.. I mean, it's not like that.. just, stay out of my business. Don't talk about what you saw or else".
Clary looked up at Alec and she could see the panic in his eyes and voice and she just nodded. Alec slowly let go of her, nodded and walked away hurriedly.
Well that was a shock, Clary hadn't even thought about what he was doing in the closet and she hadn't figured out he was gay until he made a big deal out of her not saying anything about it. Kind of ironic, if he hadn't mentioned it, she wouldn't have known. Funny how things turn out.
Clary walked into Art class finally, something she could enjoy and set her bag down as she found a seat and laid down tiredly. That day may have been horrible but at least the next hour would be relaxing. Then she would go back to reality that is the most horrible first day in the world.
And for once class was not horrible, she hadn't had a fight with anyone, the teacher had assigned them each to try painting whatever they wanted. Clary wasn't a painter like her mother, she was better at drawing but she still wasn't half bad.
Her painting was hints of dark shades, black and gray all around except for in the middle. Between the masses of black and different shades of gray, she had painted the outline of a pair of eyes. Clary went for the yellows but couldn't find the exact shade she was looking for. She got a pot and started mixing colors until she found the perfect shade of gold she wanted.
She didn't know when she stopped using her brush and started detailing with her fingers but she was. When she finished the pair of eyes she stepped back looking at it. She knew who it was supposed to be, and it scared her how well she knew.
But there was something missing, a little bit of flair in the eyes were missing. Clary sighed at that and she went to turn around when a voice stopped her. "You know, they say glitter makes everything better".
Clary was taken back and she looked up finding the same Asian guy she found with Alec earlier, she stepped back, not wanting to have the same "talk" with this guy as she did with Alec, but this guy just seemed friendly, he smiled at her as he offered her glitter from a box.
"Do you just carry glitter with you all the time?" Clary asked as she took as little as possible and delicately outlined the golden eyes.
"Yes of course. Do you think it is easy to hold all this together" he gestured at himself and Clary found herself chuckling as she went for the other eye.
"That is an.. intense painting. Bad day?" the guy asked as Clary took a final fling of glitter but instead of outlining the eyes again she flung it across the dark masses around. "Bad year" She muttered as she stepped back pretty proud, it had turned out great.
"I'm Magnus by the way" the guy said.
"Clary"
"It's nice to meet you under better circumstances, Clary" Magnus said and Clary nodded.
"It's nice to meet you when I am not being yelled at" Clary said and Magnus cringed slightly.
"Sorry about that, Alec is.."
"Paranoid?" Clary continued for him.
"Kind of but it's complicated for him, little biscuit. He's better once you get to know him" Magnus said and Clary simply nodded. She didn't know what to say to that. She wanted to say 'Doubtful' but she voted against bad mouthing his.. boyfriend? She guessed.
Magnus though was actually loads of fun and very funny, Clary liked him and he kept referring to her as 'biscuit' even though he was only one year older than her, he referred to her as if she was in kindergarten.
She had only two more classes English and P.E.
She had found English remarkably on her own, walked in on time and decided to sit in the back alone to get a breather. As soon as she sat down, she heard someone pull the chair right next to her. She looked up and saw Jace sitting there an evident smirk on his face.
"Jace" She acknowledged, mentally cursing herself for sounding breathless. She gulped discreetly as she took the image of him in. Seeing his eyes now, they put her painting to shame in real life.
"I'm assuming no one was sitting here?" Jace asked.
"You don't know that. Lots of people want to sit next to the walking talking catastrophe, I might blew up in rainbows anytime now" Clary joked using the nickname she had already gotten and Jace chuckled, obviously having heard it before.
"When you do, try not to wreck the face. It's the money maker" Jace smirked and Clary could see a chipped tooth, the only flaw in an otherwise perfect face. But the problem was that the flaw only made him look better.
"Sure I'll aim elsewhere then" Clary nodded sarcastically and chuckled. "So what do I need to catch up on in this class?"
"Nothing important Miss Lilith is kinda cool, a little weird but really cool. We're just studying Pride and Prejudice this month" Clary's eyes lit up at that.
"My favorite" Clary commented. She has read Pride and Prejudice over ten times and fell in love with the movie.
"Of course it is" Jace laughed.
"Why is that so funny?" Clary narrowed her eyes and Jace laughed at her expression more, she looked cute when she was mad.
"You girls all fall for the romantic stuff" Jace said shrugging.
"As opposed to falling for what? Looks? Besides it's not only the romance, it's about the the depiction of manners, education, marriage, money and how the world looked like in the nineteenth century, it's about how wrong initial judgement can be, the difference between good and bad people. And ultimately pride and prejudice" Clary argued.
"I can appreciate the look through the inner workings of society in the 19th century, not so much the romance factor. For such an accurate look on society's workings, the romance is far fetched and unbelievable for that time" Jace argued back and Clary turned red as she was worked up. She wasn't particularly mad but she huffed out none the less.
"You boys all can't stand the romantic stuff" Clary countered his words from earlier and huffed out again but held a small almost grin as she rolled her eyes.
"Not true, I can be very romantic when I want to be" Jace said as he leaned towards Clary and lightly almost unintentionally laid his arm on the back of her chair. Clary wanted to mention it.
To tell him to either put his arm away... or put it on her waist.
Clary sighed at her train of thought and tried to ignore it. But she couldn't, the simple gesture had goosebumps running across her back and a flutter in her stomach.
"Now class, I know you are all tired, I am as well so please let's just get through this as smoothly as possible." Miss Lilith said as she walked in to class, she was a pretty woman, Clary noticed probably in her late thirties, she had black hair and dark eyes. She also looked very tired and wore too much makeup.
"Now we have to work in pairs for the next assignment, I heard there was a new girl Miss uumm Fray?" Miss Lilith looked up and Clary raised her hand. "Oh well, since you are new and yet to know anyone I could assign you a partner myself-"
"I'll work with her" Jace's hand went up quickly and Clary stopped her eyes from widening.
"Wonderful Mr Herondale, thank you" Miss Lilith said as she went on explaining, Clary looked sideways at Jace who was grinning.
"Did you think to maybe ask me?" Clary said with an accusing look.
Jace shrugged, "Come on shortcake, I'm the best partner there is".
"Shortcake?" Clary muttered out obviously angry at the nickname.
"Would you prefer midget?" Jace asked faking innocence and Clary's cheeks turned red with rage.
"Listen here, Goldilocks-"
Jace chuckled immediately at the nickname, "You're cute when you're angry".
Clary huffed out but stayed quiet not trusting herself to speak since her cheeks who were red with anger before were now flaming crimson.
Jace watched her with calculating eyes, he really hadn't meant to say that. He really wasn't planning on calling her cute of all things. It wasn't like him, he'd call girls hot or sexy usually on his first and last date with them before he got them to bed.
That was his first thought when he had seen her that morning though. She looked beyond sexy, he kept staring at her for longer than he would care to admit before he decided to talk to her. She had made him chuckle before he knew it and he realized he liked her voice and then she turned to see him and he saw her face.
She was undeniably beautiful when he first saw her and sitting this close to her he could see her better, she had so many freckles. It was weird, he usually saw freckles on redheads more than others.
He sighed, Grow a pair Herondale. He looked back at the teacher and tried not to think of Clary for the rest of the class.
He could do it. Right?
He failed in five minutes when he looked to the side and saw her sketching or doodling at the side of her notebook.
He was in trouble. Jace shook the thought away, it was just because she was new. He was sure of it. She was something new and he liked that, he just needed to get her out of his system. He had a way to fix that, he turned to her and asked "So Clary how about tonight?"
"How about tonight what?" Clary looked back at him confused.
"I'm taking you on a date" Jace grinned as he leaned more into her, removing a strand of blonde hair from her face and locking it behind her ear, knowing what that does to girls. And Clary was no exception, he could see the way her body froze and her lips widened slightly almost gasping, her cheeks a hint of red. He's got her now.
"No you're not" Clary said then turned her head back to the teacher not catching the complete shock on his face.
"Why not?" Jace asked suddenly. Never has his plan failed, he had a system, and it had a 100% success rate. Until now.
Clary tapped her foot anxiously, it's not that she didn't want to go on a date with Jace, she did. But she had already heard all about his many 'dates' and in any case it wouldn't matter. In two months she'd be moving away again and would have to leave everyone behind again. She can't get attached. She knew the drill.
"Your girlfriend would not like that very much" Clary answered shortly.
"My girlfriend?" Jace asked confused.
"Yeah you know, blonde hair, sucks on your blood often, about this tall and twice her size in bitchiness. Rings any bells?" Clary said.
"Kaelie?" Jace questioned, "She's not my girlfriend".
"Does she know that?" Clary asked. Jace took his phone out quickly putting it in front of her line of vision and she saw him texting hurriedly You do know you are not my girlfriend, Kaelie.
Jace was bored with Kaelie either way, it was time to get rid of her just like the rest.
Clary made a humming sound that she saw but didn't comment further. She tried to shut down the glimmer of happiness she had felt when he did that. "So what time should I pick you up?"
"You're not picking me up" Clary just said.
"Why not?" Jace asked again.
"Because" Clary said.
"Because?" Jace insisted as he leaned closer to her.
"Exactly because"
"Ha?" Clary knew she wasn't making any sense and she shrugged, because she couldn't give him a valid reason for not going on the date. Not without explaining why she has issues the size of Manhattan itself.
When the bell rang, Clary gathered her stuff and was ready to head out when Jace asked her what class she had next, she looked up shocked he was talking to her. After she practically rejected him, he hadn't talked to her at all.
"Uuumm P.E." Clary answered.
"I have that, and Izzy too. Come on" Jace said. Clary was shocked to say the least, she hadn't expected him to still talk to her. Let alone hold her hand as casually as he did that same morning and walk her to class.
"You're walking me to class?" Clary couldn't help but ask, they stopped by her locker to get her gym bag and he opened her locker for her again.
"Yeah, just like this morning. Why so shocked?" Jace asked.
"Well because I- I mean I didn't- You know"
"Because you rejected a date with me?" Jace asked and Clary nodded slightly. Jace chuckled and shook his head, "My ego isn't that fragile, midget. Besides, I know next time I ask you you'll say yes".
"Are you that cocky?" Clary questioned, trying not to let the butterflies in her stomach make her stumble on her feet.
"And a lot more than that" She saw him smirk as he said that and she simply shook her head. They reached the gym and Clary immediately searched for Isabelle. When she found her, she detached from Jace. Izzy gave her a look and Clary just shrugged not wanting to comment on it.
The coach was surprisingly Mr Starkweather, the history teacher, who has now ditched his suit and was in athletic wear. That explained why he was unusually fit for a history buff, he made them run for ten minutes and then had a game of dodge ball.
"Team captains, Mr Herondale, Miss Lightwood" the two got in front of the rest of the class and started picking out their teams, Izzy chose first claiming a right to 'Ladies first' even though Jace muttered a 'I don't see one'.
She chose Clary first and Clary just stood behind Izzy while the two picked out the rest of their teams, Clary didn't really know anyone so just stood there awkwardly. When the game had started, people had avoided her for most of the game and she was fine with that, until so many of both teams lost and got out and she noticed Jace's gaze on her for a moment too long.
She saw the ball coming towards her and ducked quickly, she knew she wouldn't be able to hold the ball from him and just decided to keep avoiding them. One after one she avoided, not without stumbling while she noticed Izzy had moves so elegant and sneaky almost like a snake. Clary was focusing on Jace trying to hit her so much that she didn't notice someone else aim at her. She noticed just in time but when she moved out of its way Jace used her distraction to throw the ball at her.
The ball hit her back and she screeched as she fell down, she felt a stab of pain immediately go to her nervous system and she bit her lower lip quickly, hard enough to draw blood, as she picked herself up, moving to the side as quickly as possible, keeping her head down, trying not to show that she was hurt. The ball had hit a sensitive spot on her back but if anyone noticed they would start asking too many questions on why a soft ball could cause so much pain to a person? Then there were her scars which were a whole ordeal that she couldn't let people know about.
Izzy took out a guy and the ball hit him with force and came back to her and she hit another guy with top speed. Jace and her were the only ones left. Though she hated to admit it, Jace' moves were smooth and precise and sexy to look at. He took out Izzy and she huffed out.
"Do you ever get tired of losing to me?" Jace taunted Izzy and she moved towards him, probably to choke him when Mr Starkweather blew his whistle telling them to change and head home.
Clary decided not to bother changing as her mother would be waiting outside and she could just take a shower at home then change them, she hurried out of gym class, collecting her bag but was stopped at the door when Jace blocked her way.
"Did I hurt you?" he asked quickly.
"What?" Clary asked confused, he couldn't have known right?
"Did I hurt you earlier with the ball? I saw your face when you stood up and I thought-"
"Oh no you didn't, it was just a ball I mean how much damage could a ball do?" Clary cut him off trying to shrug it off. How had he noticed that? Was he really paying attention to her?
He smirked a dirty smirk with a naughty gleam in her eyes, "You'd be surprised how strong balls could be".
Clary made a disgusted face, and that's Jace right here. "Gentleman ha?" She tried to move past him but he stopped her with a hand on her arm and to her surprise he looked almost sheepish like he really had no choice he had to say that joke.
Clary just licked her lips quickly and shook her head trying to hold back a smile, he asked again "Really? Are you sure I didn't-"
"Jace don't worry, everything's okay, really" Clary insisted. Jace looked at her one more time before nodding.
"Okay well then I'll see you tomorrow, I guess" Jace said and she nodded as she walked out of the gym, walking out of school heading straight towards the parking lot where she found her mother waiting for her and she hurried to the car.
"Someone's in a hurry" Her mother chuckled and Clary rolled her eyes, "Long day?"
"You have no idea" Clary said with a tired sigh, "I want a shower as soon as possible".
Her mother nodded as she turned on the radio to classic music and started driving the car back to their house.
This was probably the worst first day in the history of bad first days, she knew, she had plenty of them.
