Blessed Runes, Ace thought as he rolled onto his back. His head felt like it had been kicked repeatedly.
Noticing the blonde next to him, he smiled through the pain. Could he remember who she was? No.
Her figure was like an hourglass and her skin was sun kissed and smooth looking. His tired eyes drunk her form in and he stirred as he rolled onto his side behind her. She yawned and looked over her shoulder and his eyes met the lapis lazuli in hers. Not bad, there's been bonnier looking girls… He thought, but then remembered he was no oil painting himself. In fact, the years of heavy drinking and soldiering around the continent had taken a toll on his face. Not to mention having to manage the finances of the 12th Southern Frontier Defence Unit.
'Good morning, lovely.' He said to the blonde, whose name just would not come.
'Morning, Gil.' She replied sheepishly, yawning afterwards again.
Gil? His mind slowly pondered and then he remembered using Gilbert as his name. His old boss wouldn't mind, surely. Safer to use aliases when abroad was his mantra. Not that stopped him keeping out of trouble. He had a weakness for the ladies who were hitched and liked to bitch about their spouses in the bars. Was she married? He had a look at her ring finger but there was no ring. Or tan line, where there would be one. Last thing he needed was an angry husband chasing him out of town while he was working.
'Some night, eh?' He said despite being completely unaware of the previous evening. His hand ran up the outside of her leg.
'Best not, sweetie. I must go.' She said, moving his hand and leaving the bed. Again, he drank her body in.
'Shame. I had a fun.' He smiled at her and rolled back on to his back with his hands behind his head.
'Me too.' She said, reaching for the necklace she had placed on the night stand.
Fuck. There was a gold ring around what also looked like gold.
'Don't worry, he'll be with his whore. Too busy to worry about where I was last night.' She said, as if reading his mind.
'Worried? Don't be silly.' He replied. His mind now scrambled for any memory of the previous evening. The gold ring and necklace definitely had him worried. Such jewellery could only have meant she was upper class to which there wasn't many in this town.
'Your face disagrees.' She said, slipping on an ornate dress which was adorned with light and dark reds with gold highlighting the intricate design.
The ache in his head intensified. Geddoe would kill him if they had to cut short their stay in town.
'I'll not lie then. I have no idea who you are.' He said, his voice betraying the earlier confidence.
The blond woman looked at him and laughed. 'Like I said, don't worry about it. Gil.' She winked at him before slipping on a pair of silk shoes. 'I need to go. I enjoyed last night.'
'So, who are you?' He asked, needing to know if they had to skip town.
'Just a lonely Baroness.' Her smile was cruel as she left the room.
Geddoe was definitely going to kill him.
