"I hate this place," Luna shook her head. The redness of the Dried Up Trenches made everything she saw red, from her comrades to her weapons the very essence of the color was stained in her eyes. Kicking one of the many decrepit boxes, it shattered instantly revealing that the treasures that were once inside were now gone.
The Trenches were just as they had feared, narrow pathways that lead to even smaller areas that were strayed with numerous paths and countless horrid and mutated Lost with each turn. This was nothing like the Old City Ruins, at least there they could take comfort in knowing that they would have more open ground to fight in instead of the tight cramped areas that they were forced to endure. "Yea, this place is something else." Yakumo agreed with Luna.
"Check it out," Luna muttered, seeing the rusting iron bars ahead. Looking down the edge of the small cliff, the familiar sight of a mistle brought a sense of relief to the group. "Let's head down!"
Climbing down the ladder, they all looked down at the dried mistle before them. Nodding her head, Luna ran her palm along the edge of her sword as she let her blood drip onto it. "Never ceases to amaze me that you can do that." Yakumo spoke, resting his weapon against the wall of the crimson cave. "The bloodspring should be up ahead."
"But still no sign of the Insatiable Despot." Louis pointed out. Gazing down the tunnel, "if it really is here, it's most likely near the bloodspring."
Taking a deep breath, Luna shook her head. "Well then…. let's go kill it." she told them, as she walked down the path. "The sooner we kill it the sooner we can get back to base and I can talk with Louis." She wanted her old bloodveil back, she needed more mobility, but most importantly she needed to know what was going on with him and Yakumo.
Feeling a slight pressure on her shoulder, Luna glanced to see Yakumo behind her. "Luna…." he took a breath, "I think it would be best if we rested here for a moment. Louis and I are already past our limits." he explained to her, pulling her back to the mistle.
She watched as both men rested near the glowing white plant. Biting her tongue she sat near them, placing the large crimson sword on the ground next to her. Gazing at it, she couldn't help but feel a sense of anger towards the weapon. It was so much more different than the bayonet she had before, sure it was able to damage the hordes of Lost that tried to swarm them but the amount of energy that each swing needed was more than she expected. Or was it something else that made her feel a sense of disdain towards it?
"I gotta hand it to you Luna, didn't think you could wield that sword as well as you do." Yakumo complimented her, despite seeing the immense dislike she had towards it. "Can't say the same about that bloodveil though…"
Luna sighed, she knew what he was getting at. The Ivy bloodveil, perfect for damaging opponents at a distance but in terms of perrying and attacking with it, it was not easy. For most of their journey in the Dried-Up Trenches, she had only activated it twice. But its attacks were not enough to kill any of their enemies, just enough to weaken them. "Once we get back to base, I'll switch back to the Stringer that I had. Works much better for close combat."
"You don't like it?" Louis questioned.
Shaking her head, "not really. My mobility is a lot slower than last time, at first I thought it was the terrain but the weight of this thing is seriously killing my shoulders." she briefly answered him. Right now he was the last person she wanted to talk to. During their trip, Luna couldn't help but notice how often Louis would tell her to keep her distance or how much more protective he was of her. It felt like he didn't want her to fight at all.
Sensing the tension starting to build up, "Luna, why don't you take a moment to relax?." Yakumo suggested.
Rolling her eyes, Luna didn't bother to argue with them. The level of annoyance she felt towards them was starting to make her head hurt. Grabbing her sword Luna moved toward one of the walls of the cave, the only thing right now that could even help her was distance. "Fine." she responded, taking off her bloodveil she folded it up into a makeshift pillow; turning her back to the two men as she forced herself to try and calm down.
Luna just wanted to go back to base, ever since their arrival here they didn't seem to be as in sync as they were before back in the Old City Ruins. She hated that she felt like they were distancing not only her from battle, but also themselves away from her. She tried to respect what they may have feared about her, but she couldn't deny the hurt she felt from it.
Yakumo and Louis sat in silence for a while, "so what's the plan?"
"Hm?"
"If we can, we should try to avoid the Despot and focus on the bloodspring." Louis stated.
"And if we do run into it?"
He didn't answer, gazing over at Luna for a second. "Then we'll have no choice but to fight it," he spoke. "You and I will handle it, I just want Luna to keep her distance. If anything her bloodveil can damage it, that way she can focus on attacking it from a far."
Turning over to lay her other side, Luna glared at Louis. "You want me to do what?!"
A low growl rumbled in the tunnel, Luna quickly putting her blood veil back on, as they all backed against the wall of the tunnel. Heavy footsteps, louder than a Raging Noble Woman was followed by the ear piercing sound of metal being roughly dragged against stone. "What the hell is that?" Yakumo questioned, gripping onto his weapons hilt tightly.
"My guess… it's the Despot." Luna answered.
"So it really is here." Louis shook his head, "we'll have to beat it if we're going to get to the Bloodspring. How's everyone's supplies?"
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be for combat." Yakumo replied.
"I have a few Regeneration left, but other than that I'm good to go." Luna answered.
Nodding his head, "stay on your guard, we don't know what this thing is capable of." Louis reminded them, as they slowly walked down the tunnel. Gripping the hilt of her sword tightly, a similar feeling to what she felt back at the nest of the Butterfly of Delirium. Not knowing of what your opponent could do, the dangers of the enemies abilities and strengths. It was a strange familiarity that didn't scare, nor worry her.
Clinging close to they could see the exit in sight, along with the beast that emitted the growl. It was much larger than the Butterfly of Delirium, but its build was odd. Thin arms and legs were covered in dark gray skin that had a slight sheen to it. Talon appendages spiked from its mutated hands that each held large curved knives that pierced the ground. Black barbs climbed from its back and neck, almost like it was a collar of deformation. Red eyes glowing brightly, pants escaping from its dagger tooth mouth. Looking closely they could see what appeared to be a two headed weapon protruding from its chest to its back.
They all looked at each other in silent agreement. They needed to be careful.
The Despot looked up, sensing them. Rising up its elongated arms still holding the daggers prepared itself for battle. "The thing knew we were here?" Yakumo inquired as they rushed into the open space. Slamming the dagger into the ground, a large dark red crystal manifested; Luna didn't hesitate, slashing it with her sword.
Repeating it's movements, the Despot summoned two more crystals in place of the one that was just destroyed. "Luna take care of those, Yakumo let's go!" Louis commanded, as they charged towards it. Making quick work of the crystals, Luna knew that they were just a ploy- something to keep them occupied as the monster stalked its way towards them, like a predator towards its prey.
Staying back, she watched as its attacks were surprisingly fast. Slashing the daggers towards her comrades, they managed to dodge its attacks but just barely before it went in again. Running her palm along her sword, Luna fired a shot of blood towards it, drawing its attention towards her. Taking a deep breath, Luna ran towards it head on.
The Despot stood up for a brief second lifting its leg before slamming down into the ground, a shock wave of energy emerged with its stomp knocking them all back. They were stunned by how powerful its attack was, their bodies aching from it alone. Getting back on their feet, "this thing knows how to combat close range fighting!" Yakumo announced.
"Thanks for the info, captain obvious!" Luna shouted, sending a barrage of flames towards it' briefly staggering it. "All the more reason to kill it." Using a Regeneration, she tried once more, charging towards it. Seeing the previous wounds that Louis and Yakumo did to it, hacked into the gashes; blood dripping from it.
Screaming in pain, the Despot kicked towards Luna. Jumping away, Yakumo and Louis stood in front of her. "Calm down Luna and stay back, let us handle this." Louis ordered her.
Stomping her foot, "I'm not going to stay on the sidelines and watch you two get slaughtered!" she shouted at him.
"Heads up!" Yakumo on its daggers towards them, Louis was quick to grab Luna; both of them rolling away from the attack. Holding her tight, Luna could feel her face getting hot as he had yet to release her.
Louis watched as it prepared to throw the second one, hesitation in its soulless red eyes as it tried to pick which target to throw it at. Any unsureness it had vanished, chucking it dagger towards the pair. Luna shoved Louis away from her, using all the strength in her arm she parried its attack. "Seriously?!" she shouted at the Despot, "that's pretty desperate!"
Standing up Louis stood in front of her, his hand on the back of his sword; ready for the next attack. "Are you insane?"
Shrugging her shoulders, "just be happy we didn't get skewered!" she yelled, glancing back over she watched in horror as it was doing something that no one expected to happen. Its large hands grasped at the blade that was embedded in its chest, pulling it forward. "No way…." Blood dripped from its chest, inch by inch the Despot didn't stop despite its own growls of discomfort. Grabbing at the handle it continued to pull it out until it was finally removed.
Dark blood coating the two headed weapon it held in its grasp, the smell of rotting blood quickly filled the area making them feel sick. Slashing the air, dozens of bullets of blood rushed towards them, not giving them a moment to prepare for the onslaught. Even with Louis guarding her, Luna could feel the pellets piercing into her arms and legs, a searing pain followed shortly.
"This thing is starting to piss me off!" Yakumo shook his head, their opponent was tougher than what they could have imagined. Noticing his comrades in pain, Yakumo knew that he had to hold it off while they recovered. "There's no way we're going to lose to you!"
Hearing Yakumo's shout, they knew that he was buying them some time. Both of them used some Regeneration, alleviating the pain. Seeing the anger in her eyes, Louis bit his tongue. All he wanted to do was protect her, prevent her from losing control and having what happened before at the Old City Ruins to occur again. "You can be mad at me all you want, but I can't risk it."
Gritting her teeth, she was glad to not hear him order to stay on the sidelines but the look in his crimson eyes said it. She was sick of it, sick of feeling pathetic, no matter the risk or danger she promised she wouldn't use the power even if beckoned to her. Even if it meant risking dispersal, she had no memories that she worried about losing.
Luna grabbed hold of Louis's collar pulling him close enough that their masks clashed. "Listen and listen well!" she started, pure fire in her eyes. "I don't know what's going on with you guys, but you cannot stop me from fighting!" Pushing him away, Luna rushed towards Yakumo joining in on the battle. Stunned by her boldness, Louis fought every want to stop her. Running towards the Despot, he kept a close eye on Luna as they continued to fight towards their goal.
Slamming on the end of the ax into the ground, a wave of energy followed knocking Louis and Yakumo back. Rolling towards the Despot, Luna could feel the aftermath of its attack make her barely lose her footing. Feeling a blunt force slam into her, a second one quickly followed. Looking up, "it used its hilt to hit me?" Luna questioned, tumbling a distance away.
"That was hilarious to watch you!" the voice laughed at Luna.
Getting back on her feet, Luna summoned her bloodveil moving it across the ground. "Shut up and leave me alone!" she told the voice, before unleashing the barrage of spikes to rise from the ground below its feet, making the Despot fall to its back. "See?! I'm capable of fighting without you or your wicked powers!"
Dashing again towards it, Luna hacked into the Despot with everything she had. "You know this would be easier if you let me take control…." it tried to tempt her.
"No." she made a promise to never use it's powers again. She hated the very thought of being feared because of what it did to her, regardless of their previous outcomes there was no denying that there was something more to this anomaly inside of her. "I don't need you anymore, so leave me the hell alone!"
"You sure you don't want my help?" The voice beckoned to her, as Luna barely dodged the swing of the Despots attack. "You really don't look so good."
"Shut the fuck up!" Luna shouted at the voice, rushing in and slashed at the Despots legs. It's vocal cries of pain caused it to fall to its knees, "just go away!" Jabbing the ax into the ground, Luna made haste getting as much distance as she could away from it. She knew that she only had two regenerations left before she was completely out and all of her medicine was used up from the previous blows that hit her.
"Luna stay back!" Louis commanded, dashing towards the Despot; claws ready to strike. She watched, with a single swat of its hand Louis smashed into the walls; a thin cloud of red dust surrounding him.
"Louis!" She had no time to check on him, her eyes locked onto Yakumo who was now face to face with the beast. His sword piercing into the Despot's stomach, cutting it nearly from one side to the other.
Slamming it's hand into the ground, a wave of energy rushed towards him, catching him off guard. Knocking him back, Yakumo could see the damage he did to their enemy was enough to let him get some distance. She could see him trying to use his Regeneration, as the beast grunted in pain.
"Now's my chance!" she charged towards the Despot, it's large talon like hands gripping at large wounds on its stomach. Gripping the hilt of her sword with both hands, Luna jumped using every ounce of strength her legs could muster. "I've got you!" bringing her sword down, she had a clear sight of its neck, "this will end you!"
Raising its hand, the Despot's head turned towards Luna; glowing red eyes locking onto her as it stopped her attack. Every cell in her body went cold, her body frozen in fear. Her sword couldn't manage to take off even one finger, it couldn't even cut more than a few inches into the web of its crimson covered gray hand.
A strong force struck her from behind, knocking the wind out of her. Gasping for air, Luna tried to move her body to get away but something tight was wrapped around her body. Looking down her eyes widened in shock, she wanted to scream but her need to try to regulate her breathing took over. The sensation of liquid seeping into her clothing, coating any of her exposed skin made the hairs on her body stand on edge.
The Despot had her in its grasp.
"Luna!" Louis shouted her name, seeing her trapped in their opponents hand. He didn't hesitate to rush towards it, "let her go!"
Shaking her sword out of its hand the Despot grabbed hold of its ax, swinging it down into the ground sending a wave of energy towards them. Dodging, Louis and Yakumo stayed close. They watched as Luna tried to fight out of its grasp, "let go of me!" Luna demanded wheezing between words. It didn't look towards her, as she felt the immense pressure of its grip starting to increase. "Aaaahhhh!"
"You should have taken my offer, now look at you." the voice mocked to Luna, as she grit her teeth trying to endure the pain.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" she shouted back at it, the Despot's grip continued to tighten as she could feel something snap in her left arm. The immense agony surged in her body, "ahhh!" she screamed again. Any sensation in her left arm was almost completely gone as the same pressure was starting to build in her right arm. "This thing is going to break every single bone in my body if I don't get out of this soon!" The pain was starting to become unbearable, even trying to breathe for air was a struggle of its own.
"Luna!"
"This is bad! It'll kill her if we don't stop it!" they both knew that it was only a matter of seconds before it would be the end for Luna. Yakumo knew that they needed to make every attack count, "follow my lead!" he commanded, as they charged towards the Despot.
Eyes locked onto its ax, they avoided its swing before separating. Getting close, Louis jabbed his blade deep into the Despots arm, forcing it to drop its weapon. Adrenaline rushing through his veins, he forced his blade through its arm with nothing but pure rage. Every muscle in his body was screaming at him to annihilate the monster before him with no mercy. "I'll make this monster pay!"
Yakumo could see the Despot lower its hand, activating his blood veil the twin headed hounds emerged from the sleeves of the wearable weapon. "Only got one shot!" The hounds fangs dug their teeth into the Despot's hand, the beast howled in pain as it loosened its grip on Luna. His strength was slowly starting to drain as he maintained his bloodveil, pulling its hand towards him. Thrusting his blade into its wrist, the hold it had on Luna loosened enough for it to release its captive; catching her, "now Louis!"
The elongated claws of his bloodveil manifested, forcing them deep into the Despots chest. Shoving his hand deeper into its body, Louis forcefully pulled his hand out; the very tips of his own claws were soaked in the dark crimson liquid. Staring at his opponent he watched as it tried to reach towards the large gaping hole in its upper torso, slowly turning to ash. Retracting his bloodveil, Louis shook taking a deep breath.
He knew that he lost his composure. Something in him snapped that he wanted to make the Despot suffer, to pay for what it had done to Luna. Trying to regain himself, Louis hurried over to Yakumo as he could see Luna's eyes were filled with pain. The blood that covered her body was starting to dry, as she desperately held onto her left arm that was now flailing like a rag doll's appendages. "How bad is the pain?"
"Excruciating." Luna answered.
Grabbing her arm, he examined it carefully. He could see her upper arm starting to swell severely, as her forearm was throbbing through the elbow high glove she wore. Moving her bloodveil aside, dark bruises began to form around her shoulder. Any wounds a Revenant received could heal on their own, but ones as severe as these would take time. "It looks like your arm was broken in two places and it's possible that your arm is also dislocated."
"We need to head back to the mistle."
Shaking her head, "no way!" Luna shouted at them. "The bloodspring is right there, I'm not going to let you guys turn back now when we're already so close."
"Luna be reasonable, we don't have enough supplies-"
"First off, I still have some regeneration left." holding her right hand over her chest, Luna focused on trying to heal her wounds. Feeling her bones slowly healing, the pain that once tormented her was now only a lingering sting. Regeneration could only do so much for her wounds, but it was still better than before. "Second, you need to stop babying me!"
"We are not doing that." Yakumo said to her, as she pushed him away from her. Gripping her arm, Luna walked over to her sword. Having some sensation back in her left hand, she managed to pick up her weapon.
"Ever since we got here, both of you have been forcing me to stay on the sidelines. It's fucking annoying." she vented her frustrations. Every battle they were in, she had to stay back. Every kill that she worked to achieve was stolen by them. "I told you before, if you wanted a vial of my blood you're more than welcome to have it. Just don't waste-"
Luna stopped, an eerie chill ran down her spine. Her eyes locked onto the large moving orange like web of energy that lay beyond the bloodspring. Dozens of dark reddish purple spikes curved to make a large half dome that seemed to encase the web of energy. "How did we not see this earlier?" she thought to herself, walking towards it.
"What is that?" Louis questioned. The harmonious melodies of a voice danced throughout the open space, any anger or frustration that Luna once felt was completely washed away. The words sounded so foreign to her, but the comfort that it gave her didn't make her question anything. "Singing?"
The web like barrier began to dissipate giving them a better chance to look inside, the singing was starting to grow louder. Looking ahead, they could see three figures in the center of the area, "H-How? When did they get here?" Luna questioned, she knew there was no way they couldn't have noticed the battle that had just ensued. Silver hair with a single streak of gold caught Luna's attention, a large scar separated a small section of dark skin away from what appeared to be his natural fair complexion. The large cape like bloodveil looked a bit similar to Yakumo's, but seemed more regal.
Not a single drop of blood or dirt tainted the gray and thin black black striped dress shirt, but the same couldn't be said about the weapon he held in his hand. The man was kneeling before another Revenant, a peculiar device in his hand. Standing he pulled a large spiked object from the Revenant's chest, a faint blue aura surrounded it. "The Hunter." Yakumo spoke, seeing the blood stained weapon in his possession.
The Hunters eyes gazed coldy upon the spiked orb before looking down at the woman. Scars covered her exposed skin that showed through her torn red dress. Holding her hands in front of her, a faint smile on her face. "Her face…" the large x-like scar across her face made Luna question how someone could receive a wound like it. Her white hair had a similar golden streak like the Hunter's but somehow also matched the feather adorned twin tails.
It appeared that neither one of them noticed the group, the woman moved her hands behind her back. "Is that woman his partner?" Louis pondered, as he didn't hear anything about the Hunter having a companion. The woman continued to sing, as the Hunter pointed the object towards her; the Hunter didn't hesitate to plung it into her chest.
Gasping, Luna couldn't believe what they just witnessed. She didn't know how someone would be able to absorb an object like it. There was no blood, or sign of damage to the woman. "I don't care who you are, you better leave that woman alone!" they didn't bother to gaze at them, parts of them were beginning to fade into a red mist. The mist rushed towards them, making them flinch but they could feel nothing other than the bit of wind that hit them.
Looking back, there was no longer any sign of the Hunter or the woman. Luna didn't budge from where she stood, while Yakumo and Louis investigated the strange area. There was something that she couldn't shake, something that just didn't sit right with her. A strange familiarity that she felt when she looked at the Hunter. "Just who is the Hunter?"
Stretching her arm, Luna was relieved that the pain that she endured earlier was now gone. After they had returned back to base, she kept her distance from everyone. The last thing she wanted was to deal with any of them, especially after she blew up on Louis and Yakumo. A sense of guilt hit her, but in the back of her mind she kept telling herself that it was reasonable for her to be upset.
Walking over to the map, she couldn't help but feel confused. The spring they found in the Old City Ruins led towards the Dried-Up Trenches, but now the spring they found there was directing them to go back. Trying to recall their previous expedition there, Luna tried to think of something they may have missed but nothing came to mind.
Walking down the steps, her eyes caught a glimpse of something lying on Murasame's bench. The dark ebony material glistened almost like it was brand new, the bright red trimmings blending down into the tail at the end of the coat. "This is gorgeous…" Luna whispered to herself, examining the Stringer bloodveil she held in her hands. It looked so much better than the previous Stinger she wore, something that would compliment her style more than just hiding it.
"Coco found that sometime ago, but Murasame decided she would restore that for you." Luna jumped at the sound of Louis's voice, turning she could see him sitting at his desk buried deep in one of his many books. "She figured you would be more comfortable with that then the one you were wearing today."
Folding the bloodveil over her arm, "yeah well, if someone let me try to use the other one I was wearing today, maybe I could have used it way more effectively." she harshly stated.
Louis shook his head, "besides how you acted today, you seemed to handle it quite well. But the choice is yours."
"Tch," Luna clicked, "whatever. How I acted, how about you?" she questioned him.
"At least I'm not the one who got caught."
"I'm not the one that got slammed into a wall." she retorted.
"Honestly what you did today was reckless, more so than what happened back in the Old City Ruins." Louis stated, closing his book as he loudly placed it down on his desk. "You can't expect that every stunt like that will lead to our enemies defeat."
Gritting her teeth, Luna tried to contain the rage that was starting to fester inside of her. "If I hadn't done what I did, you and Yakumo would have probably been turned to ash!" she shouted. "I don't remember what exactly happened back in the Old City Ruins, but ever since then you've seriously been trying to hold me back in combat. I'm not gonna go out there if I'm just gonna have to stay on the sidelines!"
Walking up to her, "you know how vital you are to our whole operation…. Luna you need to understand that what we're doing is to protect you."
Shaking her head, "you guys are constantly protecting me! I get that I'm important to your investigation but I can protect myself! I'm not weak!", tightening her fists, "I don't need you guys to treat me like I'm some sort of pathetic weakling!"
He could visibly see the rage in her eyes, Louis could barely contain himself. Grabbing her shoulders, he kept a tight grip on her as he closed any distance there was between them. "That's enough!" Luna jumped, Louis had never raised his voice before; a side of dominance she had yet to see. "You were almost killed! Don't you understand how that would affect us if you just died and we did nothing to protect you!"
Flinching in pain, Luna could feel that any chance of breaking out of his grasp was slim. "That makes two of us…." she whispered. Locking eyes with Louis, "you don't know how many times I worry that you or Yakumo will die because I didn't do everything I could, that I didn't give it my all."
"Even if it means using that strange power?" Louis questioned her, "who's to say the next time you use it, you won't lose control and kill everyone in sight?"
Luna didn't know how to respond, her head dropped in silence; her mind searching for the right words to say to him. Nothing came to mind that would serve as an answer to his question, but something did make her frightfully curious. "So that's what this is about…. you're scared of me…?" she whispered. "Aren't you?"
"What?"
Tilting her head up, locking eyes. "You're scared of me. Scared of this power that I possess…." she knew that it wasn't normal what happened to her. In moments when she was on the brink of death, something would take over her, making her able to turn the tides of battle, but at the cost of whatever trust she had built with her comrades.
"Luna…." releasing his grip, Louis took a step back; seeing the visible upset in her eyes. Clenching his fists, he gazed down at the cracked stone ground. Taking a deep breath, "It's not that…. Look I'm sorry I lost my composure, it's just-"
"Just what?" Luna cut him off. "Louis if you have something to tell me then say it." she demanded. She was tired of him being so secretive, so remorseful when he didn't need to be. Moments where she questioned what was really going on inside of him.
Biting his lip, Louis battled the raging thoughts in his mind. Everyday that he spent with her all he wanted to do was tell her, every single detail that he remembered. Every memory he wanted to share with her all over again, but he knew that the person in front of him was still not the Luna that he once knew. "Use the next few days to relax, Yakumo and I won't be needing you on our restocking mission tomorrow." he quickly turned his back to her.
"Stop!" Louis didn't turn to face her, "so now you won't let me come along! Are you serious?"
"Luna, we're done talking." he sternly told her, as he walked back to his room. Shutting the door, Louis rested his head on the wooden door tightly clenching his fist. Digging into his pocket, he carefully held the silver locket in the palm of his hand.
So many years he had spent looking at the piece of jewelry, so many times he wished to see her again. Gently pulling it open, he looked at the words carved inside over and over again just like always did. Shutting it, "I could tell you everything, share everything with you but it still wouldn't be the same." he muttered to himself. "But you're not wrong…."
Closing his eyes, "Luna….what's happened to you?"
