Cassandra pulled Fidella to a halt. She smirked upon seeing the pub. After she tied her horse up securely, she entered the Glass Slipper. Then she sat down at the bar counter and placed a coin down. "A beer."
"Coming right up," a boy answered. When he turned around to hand it to her she choked on her own saliva. "Are you ok?" he asked.
She cleared her throat and composed herself. "Yes..."
The boy shrugged and turned his back to her. Cassandra stared as she took a drink of her beer. This was the last place she'd expect her bounty to be hiding. A bar tender? He gave up all the luxuries of a castle to be a bar tender?
"Hey, Hair Stripe, I need a refill over here."
"Coming," he said. Varian brought a mug of bear over to the man. Cassandra watched as he set it on the table and the man light tapped the boy's behind. Varian slapped the man's hand. "Hey, you're new here so I'm just gonna warn you. No touching the waiter!"
"And what are you gonna do about that, sweet cheeks?" the man teased as he handed Varian the money.
Varian have him a hard look as he set the coins in his pocket. "You wanted beer, right?"
"Yes-"
"Then have it!" He dumped the contents of the mug on the man and the smashed the mug on his head. "Next offense and you're escorted out!" Varian turned on his heels and marched off, fury and disgust written on his face.
"Daaaaaaanm!" one of the man's buddies slurred in a drunken voice.
Cassandra sipped on her beer, smirking. She was a little impressed. She had assumed the boy would be all bark, no bite, but she supposed the boy worked here for some time. He had to be at least a little badass to get by. Otherwise, he would have been back at the castle long ago. It had been a long time since she had a challenge, and maybe Varian would be that one.
She glanced over at Varian, who she realized had been studying her without her even noticing. Usually she could feel when someone had their eyes on her. He merely looked back at his glasses he was wiping dry with a towel.
When she finished her beer, she slid the cup over. "Thanks."
Varian nodded and she walked out. Cassandra untied Fidella and mounted her steed. "Well, I found my pay. Now I'm gonna have find a way to get him." With that, she rode off.
Varian looked at the man Cassandra had sat by. "Do you know who she is?"
"The bounty hunter? Yeah, she's pretty well known. Wonder who she's looking for. This place is chalk full of bounty, but she'll have a hard time. Most of us are under the Baron's Code. No ratting out and if we can help it, stop the bounty hunter."
"She goes after the best, right?"
"Yeah, but I don't see her getting the Baron on her own."
Varian snorted. "She's not here for him. She isn't the best bounty hunter by going after crime lords. She goes after strays with big money."
The man shrugged. "Guess we'll find out who she's getting one way or another."
"Right..."
