The Mistake
"They say follow your heart,
But if your heart is in a million pieces,
Which piece do you follow?''
He left her. Broken hearted. He only did it for more publicity. She knew that now. She always thought to herself 'Did he ever really love me?'
She'd fallen for the innocent boy with a Spiderman watch. The biggest mistake of her life. Because people aren't always who they seem to be these days.
As many times as Preston Winters would look Macey in the eye and say he didn't care about her designer clothing and rich family, and all the press that surrounded her, every single time she fell for it. She didn't know if it was his innocent demeanour or just the fact that she knew that the person in front of her wouldn't lie to her. But Preston Winters was far, far from innocent. In fact he was the complete opposite. Macey just realised it a little too late.
Being America's Sweetheart meant that people, meaning the Press, liked to stay up to date with her love life too. Because that's all they really care about. And Preston's father was an Ambassador, so Preston was in the spotlight too. Getting a little too comfortable, even for her liking. He just liked the idea of being known, she would say to herself over and over again, until she finally started believing it.
How could she not see it? All the signs were right there, everything had played out in the way he wanted. "You really are like your father. You know Zach was right. You did belong in that facility, that we broke you out of in Senior year." Cammie told him, with a disgusted look on her face. Preston had helped when she had run away. And lied to her at the same time. He'd lied to all of us. Told us he was nothing like his father. When in fact he was exactly that.
They had trusted him. Let him into their lives, and treat him one of their own. He was family. But not anymore. You would think that after everything that happened, he would be grateful. They saved his life. They all loved him. She had loved him, and despite everything that he'd done, a small part of her always will. It's not right to admit it but it's the truth. She doesn't love the person he's become, the boy obsessed with fame and money, no, but her heart will always long for the boy with the spiderman watch, who saw the real her. The girl who hid her real self from her parents and the whole world. The Macey McHenry without her designer clothing and politician parents.
But she'd move on eventually, maybe not tomorrow or the day after, but eventually, and her heart will no longer long for him to come back. To say it was all some sick joke, that he still loved her. But even she knew that was never going to happen. Because he got what he wanted. And it sure as fuck wasn't her. All the ''I love you's'' and late nights alone meant absolutely nothing to him anymore, they were just a mere memory. His past. And 5 years from now he'll be nothing but a memory. And Macey wasn't going to let some stupid boy destroy her.
Because in the end loving him wasn't the mistake. But thinking he loved her back was.
