It was by accident how Joanne first found out Lindsay's name and her uncle's demise. She had just arrived back from work and turned on the tv for some background noise while she cooked dinner. The breaking news report loudly playing on the tv brought her out of the daydream she was in. She picked up the wine glass that she had just filled and went over to sit on the sofa.

"Three officers have died in the line of duty tonight after their car was ambushed and set on fire in a country lane. Another officer has been taken to hospital with minor injuries along with an unnamed member of the public who is in critical condition. It is not known how he is connected to the case at this moment in time."

Jo tipped her wine glass back. Downing it in a gulp. She had an idea that this was going to happen. There was a power struggle within the OCG. Tommy had pissed off one too many people and this was the payback he got for it. She stayed well clear, did the jobs she was asked and never made trouble. She was never going to end up like him.

It was Fairbank who had told her of her uncle's death. On the outside she had to play the grieving niece but, on the inside, she couldn't hide her excitement. She thought she had finally found a way out but when she saw that news report and the subsequent stories that came after telling her the name of the police officer involved in the ambush, who was still alive, she did some digging. She wanted to know how she was connected to all of this but it turned out that she was just an unwilling bystander like herself. Someone who was dragged into this crazy game. Like a pawn willing to be used in search for their own resolve.

She soon forgets about Lindsay. Soon forgets about the dream that her life could have been like if she was just able to get out in time but it wasn't to be. The OCG pull her in even deeper. Make her prove her worth after Tommy dies. To make sure that she wasn't going to go the same way and get out any way that she can.

It's about a year and a half later when she hears of Lindsay's name again. This time it's not good news. She's standing in a petrol station. Having just come in to pay when she notices the newspapers on the rack. She never buys them. Knows most of the bad news inside since she and the OCG cause it. The title reads "Ambush cop now dead in own ambush" with a photo of her from the day outside the court house. She tries to hide her tears. It wouldn't be good if anyone finds her like this. She picks up the newspaper to take home. She searches the obituaries to find her name. It takes a while of searching there and the internet to find it. She looks at the date and realises that she would be at work. There was no chance to get a day off without arousing suspicion from her bosses and the OCG.

So, she leaves it to her day off at the weekend and drives to the cemetery. The headstones reminding her of her teenage years and the tombstone of her mother's that she didn't get to see. She searches the rows until she finds her name. A small cross with her name inscribed on it. Nothing like the hundreds of other headstones around her. Nothing flashy, nothing personal. Just a plain blank cross and a pauper's funeral. Joanne wondered if Lindsay was even religious. She unwrapped the flowers and placed them on top of the grave. She didn't think of bringing a pot and she wasn't going to nick one from another grave either. It would be a bad situation for a cop to be in. She stepped backwards and really talking the time to relish in the fact that the now dead woman in front of her did what she dreamed of doing all along. Kill her uncle. Ever since she heard and saw the things that he did and made her do since she was a teen, she was glad that he finally got his comeuppance.

She had heard rumours through the grapevine too. What Lindsay had done in her final time on earth. Her last case. The girl she tried to save from the hands of her uncle and his friends. It had worked of course but only for a short while. Carly was now out there by herself. Joanne made the connection between herself and Carly, knowing that she will probably turn out to be as messed up as she was. She wondered how she could do it thought about how she could save the girl. If not for Carly or herself but for Lindsay. To pay back the woman in return for what she had done for her. As Joanne walked back to the car, she realised she would need to up her game if she wanted even a chance to save Carly.
