The smell of burning filled Bakugo Katsuki's nose.

When he opened his eyes, he was greeted with the sight of angry red clouds that covered the sun from his view. The whole world around them was covered in an orange tint. Dust hung heavily in the air, making it hard to breathe.

All around him was chaos. Buildings lay flattened, the rubble lying in great piles. Kacchan could smell fire not too far away. There was a hole in the ground, a hole that wasn't supposed to be there. A hole they had created.

The memories of the battle came back to him slowly.

The group of villains that had come, with some plan that Kacchan didn't really remember. He, Todoroki, Iida and Deku, along with Uranaka, Asui and Yayorozu had gotten to the attack site first, and worked on clearing out any victims and bystanders. There were already casualties.

Bakugo had left that side of the job to Uranaka, Iida and Yayurozu. They needed to keep these villains busy. Take them down and do so while causing as little damage and harm to the area.

There were a lot of villains, but they were a good team. The weakest were picked off first, immobilized, and left to the side to be dealt with by the police. Then, the largest of the villains, the one causing the most damage, left Kacchan's attention for a second

Deku's childhood home, an apartment building that Kacchan had visited numerous times in his childhood, fell down before his very eyes, toppled by the largest of the group, with a quirk that gave him strength to surpass that of a Nomu.

Kacchan ducked, preparing for the weight of the rubble to hit him, crush him. End him.

But it never came, and he heard a shout. Flabbergasted, Kacchan looked up, and saw Uranaka standing close by, her hands above her head, eyebrows furrowed and beads of sweat dripping down her forehead.

She was holding up the building.

Go!

Kacchan moved, seeing a bystander nearby, and snatching them up, still running as fast as he could to get them away.

A blaze of energy shot past him, headed the opposite direction, and Kacchan slowed, turned. Saw Deku, headed back towards the apartment block. Yelling something.

Deku attacked the villain with the quirk of super strength, knocking them off their feet. Now Kacchan saw that it had been targeting Uranaka, but Deku had saved her just in time. Deku continued to fight Super Strength, and Kacchan dropped off the survivor that he had found with the rest, seeing helicopters whirring overhead, trying to find a way to get to the battlesight, to help.

But he didn't have time for that.

A resounding crash told him that Uranaka had dropped the building. Kacchan spun around, seeing Deku carrying an unconscious Gravity Hero out of harm's way, his superpower Quirk crackling and fizzling around them as he dropped her off as gently as he could at their first aid station. The super strength villain was nowhere to be seen.

A scream rose from the battlefield again, and Deku and Kacchan looked up, in time to see Todoroki flung through the air, moving just in time so that he could put up a wall of ice, stopping him midfall and dropping himself back down beside Deku and Kacchan. The scream had come from who Kacchan assumed was the leader of the villains, a figure standing in the centre of the destruction, now all alone.

Todoroki had glanced to look at them, wordlessly the plan had been confirmed between the three Pro Heroes. Deku activated his quirk again, and Full Cowling began to strike around him as he got ready. Kacchan grinned, waited. one , two, three.

They attacked, all of them at once. The villain, for what Kacchan could give them credit for, was a good fighter, deflecting their advancements without too much trouble.

On and on and on...

Deku stopped for a second, catching his breath. Todoroki was bleeding heavily, and Kacchan caught Dekus eye.

Deku nodded, then faced the villain once again. Kacchan held out his hands, feeling his quirk crackle in his palms.

And then...Kacchan remembered, he and Deku using a joint attack on the villain.

Kacchan raised his head, an unusual burst of urgency to find Deku giving him the strength to pull himself forward. One of his gauntlets was missing, the oher, broken into shards around his one hand.

Kacchan tried to pull himself up as best as he could. Every muscle in his body screamed in agony, and Kacchan fell back down with a groan. He inched forward on his hands and knees, gritting his teeth as he tried to ignore the pain that pierced at him everytime he moved.

The earth was torn up and uneven, and Kacchan followed the clearest route without really knowing where he was going. He didn't see anyone else, no sign of Todoroki, the villain, or anyone else on their team.

Kacchan caught sight of him at last. Lying motionless in the centre of the crater. Where the biggest force of energy had exploded, that had knocked both Kacchan and the villain out of range. His hero suit torn and dirty, mask lying somewhere else, his body not moving.

Kacchan moved with more urgency, the pain dulling to a simple buzz as he focused on Deku. He made it to his side and collapsed onto the ground again, his chest heaving at the amount of energy it had taken for him to get there.

Kachan coughed, raising his hand enough to touch Deku's face. "Hey, damn nerd." His voice was raspy and it hurt to talk. "Wake up."

Deku didn't open his eyes, didn't bounce back like he was prone to doing all the time. The sudden ringing in Kacchan's ears got louder, as something dawned on him.

"Deku." He shook his shoulder, the torn fabric of his hero suit breaking under his hands. "Deku wake up!"

Kacchan turned around, looked over his shoulders for any sign of life, someone who could help them.

He needed to get Deku help.

He tried to pull himself to his feet again, this time with even more urgency than before. But the broken bones in his ribcage, and legs protested so violently, that even Kacchan's iron will succumbed, and he dropped back down to the ground, breathless and frustrated.

He...He wasn't strong enough.

A strangled sound came from Kacchan's throat, as the pain grew tenfold, and the realization hit him. He wasn't strong enough, wasn't strong enough to help, call for aid, to wake Deku. None of it. He was weak.

Always have been, the voice in his head said. You should have kept them all safe. Who knows who else is hurt out there. You always knew you wouldn't be good enough, and now here's your proof. The one person who never stopped believing in you. And you couldn't save him.

Kachan dropped his head onto Deku's stomach, tears seeping unchecked down his cheeks. "Come back to me, you damn nerd." He croaked. "I haven't beat you yet."

The sun was going down. Kachan didn't know when someone would find them. His eyes flickered shut, and Kachan took a shuddering breath.

Then he heard a cough, and Deku's stomach moved. Kachaan didn't have the energy to look up, to raise his tired head, but he managed to push out, "What?" as he heard Deku groan.

"I said, you're squashing me."

Kachan let out something like a delirious laugh, his body relaxing entirely. "You're alive."

"Why?" Deku said breathlessly, gazing up at the beautiful array of colours of the sunset in the sky. "Were you worried about me, Kachan?"

There was silence, and then Kachan managed to grumble. "If I wasn't so exhausted I would punch you."

Sounds of ambulance and police sirens sang like angels in Kacchan's ears, and hope returned, fragile, but it was back nonetheless.

'We're going to be okay." Deku said, and Kachan scoffed. "We kinda have to be Deku."

"What?"

"I still have to become the best...and overcome you."

"Well then." Deku coughed once, his voice starting to fade. "I'll be even better than that."

"Hmm." Kachan rolled his eyes. "Stay alive and prove it to me."

"Deal."
