1. "Gear up!"
"Gear up and be ready to move in twenty," Voight had told them.
Twenty minutes was not a lot of time, but it was enough to find herself alone in the locker room with her partner as they got ready.
Hailey thought it was almost illegal how good her partner looked in their standard tactical gear. She had of course very intimate knowledge of what was hidden beneath the tough exterior of Jay Halstead. All the while he pulled his Kevlar vest tighter around him, she only saw the dip and taut muscles that had held her so assuredly that very morning. She nearly huffed, shaking her head hoping to clear her thoughts as she twiddled with her gear. The rest of the unit were already making their way to the roll-up; an impending drug bust that had them all donning heavy Kevlar and the rest of their tactical gear.
At the thought of that, she glanced across to see her partner fiddling about with his gear. Jay, like herself, had pulled on their tactical gear over their plain clothes. His grey t-shirt was just visible under the dark heavy Kevlar that he wore. She almost laughed when he had complained earlier that morning about not remembering to carry an extra change of clothes. He'd been worried somebody (namely Trudy) would notice but as luck would have it, they caught a big break in their case and it had been all hands on deck and boots to the ground from the moment they walked in.
Hailey allowed herself one last lingering look over her busy hands, at him. He was so handsome and blessedly unaware about it… most of the time. She blushed as she remembered how she had very nearly torn that same t-shirt off him the night before. And the mad rush they had been in that morning to find it again as they raced out the door. Kevlar should never look so good on anybody, Hailey mused.
Then came the bloody thigh holster. It really shouldn't have gotten her so bothered. Only, when she saw it wrapped quite snug around his jean-clad thigh, she bit her lip, knowing what it felt like to have those lean muscles pressed so intimately against hers. Her face grew hot when she remembered how it felt to have him press her against the kitchen counter, distracting her in every way he could as she tried to cook (rather pitifully) for them. When he had her trapped against the soft cushions of her couch, leaning over her as she breathed his name over and over again.
Hailey caught herself quickly and turned away, her eyes reaching for anything that wasn't Detective Jay Halstead. They had a case to solve after all. Once more she aimlessly fiddled with her gear, cursing slightly when her fingers shook on the straps.
She had thought that perhaps she had been rather successful, but when she glanced at her partner, the knowing smirk that played on his lips was all the tell she needed.
"Shut up," she grumbled as he laughed.
"I haven't done a thing," He teased.
She shook her head, grabbing the last of her stuff and headed for the door. "Come on, the others are waiting."
"Wait, wait," he said and quicker than she could react, pulled her towards the lockers, pressing her against it. Immediately she was thrown back to the previous night. When he'd held her much the same, had the same mischievous look in his eyes as he pushed himself closer to her.
"Jay," she warned, eyeing the door quickly.
He was smirking again - that all too handsome smirk - that on his very best of days managed to sway even Trudy.
"Jay," She said again, this time trying to push him away. He chuckled and she rolled her eyes. "We don't have time for this!"
Of course, they didn't. He knew that. But he wanted to steal one more moment before they braced the uncertainty that came with the job. The glint in his eyes softened for a moment, a tender look she knew quite well by now. His finger danced along her sides, over the very same straps she battled with until he pulled on it. Hailey gasped as she felt the vest tighten around her. Her fingers digging into his forearms as he held her close.
Jay leaned in, grateful her hair was already up in a ponytail so he could whisper in her ear, "Have I ever told you how badass your look in Kevlar?"
Hailey laughed, ducking her head for a moment. "No, you haven't. but I'm pleased you think so." She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer. He was momentarily surprised but came willingly all the same. "Does that line usually work for you?" she whispered.
Jay smiled, a slight red to his cheeks, Hailey was delighted to note. "I wouldn't know. You're the only one I've said it to."
"Oh? So it's not a tried and tested Jay Halstead move?" she teased him.
"I think you make me out to be far cooler than I actually am," Jay told her.
"Nah," she said nonchalantly, "You're pretty badass yourself." Her hands danced down to his sides, coming to his waist. She paused. "I don't know anybody that could make this," her fingers slipping beneath the thigh holster, "look so good." Her fingers twisted and squeezed as best she could the jean-clad muscle.
"Hailey," he breathed almost in a warning.
She grinned. "It's really quite unfair," she continued, her other hand pulling him closer by the tactical belt he had on.
He leaned in, one hand pressed to the wall above her head. There was only so close they could get with their vest and gear on. Hailey loathed the space between them at that moment. His other hand, slipped down her neck, his thumb rubbing along her jaw as he gently pulled her face up to meet his. There was no hesitation as he brought his lips to hers. When it came to kissing her, Jay never hesitated. He was demanding and firm against her, drawing deep from within her that which she thought she would never be able to give. He pressed her further back into the locker and when Hailey moaned quietly, Jay's hand slipped from the wall to grab her waist. His fingers grasped her tightly before they quickly pushed the fabric of her shirt up a little. Touch was everything to them. Being able to hold and touch her as he wished was something Jay never wanted to take for granted.
They stopped, pulled apart really only when they heard Adam hollering for them down the hallway.
As she gathered her breath, Hailey looked up at Jay, who stood, still looming over her, breathing just as heavily as she was. He had that look on his face. The way his eyes softened, and the smallest of smiles playing on his lips. There was fondness and tenderness and sincerity in every way he looked at Hailey and there wasn't a moment it didn't make her heart leap or take her breath away.
Jay seemed to have a knack for doing that.
"Halstead! Upton! Let's go!" Ruzek called once more.
Jay sighed no doubt collecting himself too and then pulled away. As he did though, he quickly leaned back in and placed a lingering kiss on her forehead. It was the simplest of gestures but it certainly made her heart skip a beat.
They gathered the rest of their gear and head out to the roll-up to join the others. As Hailey and Jay got into his truck, Hailey snuck one more glance at him. He was far too occupied calling over the radio to their sergeant to notice this time. She smiled, because it really should be illegal how ridiculously good, he looked in tactical gear. He turned to catch her staring and she merely smiled.
Voight came over the radio again, more instructions as they neared their destination.
"Copy you," Jay said and he steered them down the street. Adam and Kim were in his Rubicon behind them and Voight in the dodge ahead. Kevin and Vanessa brought up the rear.
"Hey," Jay said stalling her once he put the truck in park. She turned to him, with wide eyes. "Be careful."
Hailey paused. There was something very different in the way he said it now. "You too." She leaned over the console, pressing her lips to his all too quickly for Jay's liking and then they were jumping out of his truck.
"Ready?" Voight asked. They all nodded and he gave Jay the go-ahead.
Jay pulled his gun from his thigh holster as the others moved into place. He glanced at Hailey who held her gun securely and nodded ever so subtly.
Jay led the unit up the stairs to the front of the house, signalling for Kevin, Vanessa and Kim to take the sides. Adam stood with a battering ram at the ready. By his side stood Hailey and behind them Voight.
"Hit it," Voight ordered gruffly.
"Chicago PD!" Jay called as Adam rammed the door open.
