THIS IS FOR A FRIEND THAT I FOUND OUT WHO PASSED AWAY ON 1/10/2021... THIS IS HOW I SORTED OUT MY FEELINGS...
3:00 PM
I was getting home from school when sirens and a firetruck zoomed past me. I silently prayed for the people who were in trouble. I hope they are okay. I thought.
I followed the sidewalk looking down the cracking concrete. It was usually quiet in our small neighborhood but with the firetruck it wasn't. I could not wait to show my parents my essay. I looked up at the sky - smoke filled the air and I could smell it all the way from here. I followed the billows of smoke with my eyes... Home!
I gasped, my walk breaking to a run. A small crowd probably ten people, mostly my neighbors had gathered at the scene but a few firefighters had stopped them from going any closer. I dropped my backpack to the ground, took off my walkman, uncaring about the delicate tapes inside. I ran towards the crowd trying to get to the fighters so I could see if my parents were okay... Were they okay? They had to be okay! Please, God don't let them die!
An older woman, one of my neighbors, grabbed my arm.
"Please let me go! I have to know!"
"Kelsey, you need to stay here, so you don't get in the way. Okay?" I shook my head.
"What about Mom? Was she in the house? I gotta call Dad!" I said, feeling the heat of the flames of fire on my house. I turned away to see if I could borrow someone's phone.
"Kelsey! Your dad was in the house. He just got home." Mrs. Anderson said. I gasped, my heart was pounding too much.
"Wha... what are you talking about?"
"He's in there, Kelsey." I couldn't believe this.
"NO!" I shouted breaking free from her hold trying to get past the firefighter's barricade they had made. But one of them stopped me by grabbing me by the waist.
"Hold it, you need to stay right here. Its too dangerous!"
"But my parents are in there! I need to go get them! Please, I need to know!" I yelled, the smoke watering my eyes. The firefighter looked at me, and bit his lip.
"Cap!" Another firefighter shouted. "We found two victims!"
The house was burning down... but I was falling apart.
3:30 PM
I was in the waiting room of Rampart Hospital. I held my head in my hands, trying to think good thoughts. They were okay, they had to be. A nurse came over to me, handing me a paper cup of water.
"Here you go, sweetie," She said with a warm smile.
"Thanks," I mumbled.
"What's your name?"
"Kelsey," I answered after taking a sip.
"I'm Dixie. Would you mind if I sat here?" I shook my head. Dixie sat down next to me. "How old are you, Kelsey?"
"Fourteen," I sighed but right after, the two firefighters I had remembered from the fire walked up still in their dirty sooty yellow coats.
"Dixie, how's the victims -" The blonde haired one began before Dixie gave him a look.
"Johnny, Roy, this is Kelsey. Her parents are the patients." The nurse introduced me. "Kelsey, this is Johnny and Roy. They are the firemen paramedics who were helping at the fire."
"I know, I saw them." I said. "You stopped me from going to see my parents,"
"It was dangerous, Kelsey," Roy DeSoto replied.
"But I could have held their hand or something!" I said hotly. "I want my parents, Dixie. Please let me see them." Dixie stood up when Dr. Brackett stepped towards me.
"Kelsey?" He said quietly.
"Are my parents okay?" I asked. "Please tell me their okay,"
"I am so sorry," Everything stopped. Dead still.
"What about my brother? He was supposed to be in there?" I whirled around to look at Roy and Johnny. "You were in there! You didn't find him?"
"I'm sorry, Kelsey, we didn't know." Roy said sadly.
"But he was only three! How could you?"
My heart was broken.
Shattered. Into millions of pieces...
