Chapter Three: Your line of work
4:00 PM
Suddenly the radio crackled and a voice came on. The man on the radio started speaking like he was in code. Sounds like a military base. I inwardly smiled. I bit my lip as Johnny reached over and grabbed it.
"On our way," He said. My eyes widened.
"What's going on?" I asked as he flipped a switch for the sirens to turn on. I gulped hoping this wasn't really happening. He glanced at me.
"An apartment is on fire," Johnny replied. My heart clenched, nearly stopping.
"Oh. Their okay, right?" I asked as Roy pushed on the gas pedal. "There isn't any victims, right?"
"Its okay, we'll get them out as soon as we can." Johnny promised. I shook my head. This was just horrible... I should have just gone to the police. I didn't want to see another fire. I just wanted to stay safe.
"You can't just promise something, Johnny. You never can, in your line of work." I said softly.
"Look, Kelsey, I know what you're feeling, I'm an orphan too. Its always dangerous for paramedics, firefighters, cops... It will be okay as long as you stay inside the squad." Johnny said taking my hand and squeezing it gently. I looked away letting out a quiet sigh.
I shouldn't be here. I shouldn't be wasting paramedics' time. I shouldn't be coming with them. I shouldn't be hindering their lives. I thought. We arrived in a few minutes. I saw the flames fluttering and Station 51's firetruck trying to get the flames out. Roy and Johnny got out of the truck but before Roy closed the door he looked at me with a sympathetic look.
"As long as you stay in here, you'll be okay. So don't leave. Do you promise?"
"Yes sir. I promise." I nodded quickly waving my hand to shoo him off. He needed to save lives right now... and not take care of me. "Be careful!" Roy nodded as he put his black firefighter hat back on his head. He slammed the door leaving me alone with my thoughts and worries. I pulled my legs to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. I was far enough away to not get hurt but I could still see the fire and the men fighting to get rid of it.
Please protect them, God, I can't let them die too. I put my chin on my knees and stared at the dashboard.
I heard muffled noises of shouts, hoses and mostly fire burning everything near it. I lifted my head and looked out. Roy and Johnny were helping two "victims" out of the smokey area. That's when I heard a yell.
"Cap! There's another one in there!" A firefighter shouted. The one he called Captain who looked vaguely familiar yelled back,
"Get Gage to help you!"
"Yes sir!" I watched Johnny hand medical supplies to Roy before he got up and helped the other firefighter. I silently prayed as I closed my eyes trying to not remember those awful memories of home.
BANG! I jumped in my seat, gasping. Everything stopped. Slow motion.
"JOHNNY! NOOOOOOOOOOO!"
