Chapter 4: Freaking out

Directly after Kelsey screamed.

I slid over to the driver's seat, opened the door and jumped out of the squad. I had to get to Johnny. I had to see if he was okay.

An explosion. Johnny's body being pulled back from the blast of heat and fire. Screams. My screams. Fire. Firefighters surrounding Johnny.

I could hear sirens coming closer... and closer... I ran to Roy who was on his knees administering something to Johnny. I could still feel the heat of the flames and I looked around to see debris on the asphalt.

"Roy, is he okay!?" I asked.

"I told you to stay in the squad!" Roy snapped. "Go back in the squad."

"But what about Johnny?!" Roy leaned over Johnny and did something with his medical stuff. I then noticed that Johnny had a few burns and scrapes on his face. Roy sighed and looked back at me.

"Kelsey, I know this is hard, but could you please go back to the squad."

"I don't want him to die,"

"He's not going to die, Kelsey. Its okay." I swallowed looking down at Johnny who was unconscious.

"Roy! The ambulance is here, take Johnny to the hospital." The captain said before glancing at me. "Who is she?"

"Sir, this is Kelsey, she was the daughter of the two victims who were in the house in that community." The captain pursed his lips at me.

"Just don't get in the way," I nodded hoping and praying that Johnny and all the other firefighters would be okay.

4:45 PM

I'm freaking out. No one's telling me anything. Not even Roy. Nurse Dixie looks up at me from her paperwork. I'm sitting down in a chair, holding my head in my lap, feeling like I could be sick. Was Johnny really okay? Was he safe?

Roy sat beside me, he touched my arm gently.

"Kelsey, breathe," I couldn't. Too many thoughts raced my mind. Too many memories.

"Roy," I whispered. "I can't breathe,"

I struggled to breathe. I tried to remember: In. out. In out.

"Kelsey!" Roy shook my shoulders, but I didn't know what to say, what to even do. I gasped, sucking in air. I started to shake.

"Dix! She's hyperventilating!" I stared into Roy's blue eyes reminded of my little brother's eyes that used to stare at me like that.

I blinked fast, tears stinging my eyes. I could hear Dixie running to me.

"We need to get her calm, Roy," A voice said calmly.

"You can't just promise something, Johnny. You never can, in your line of work."

"As long as you stay in here, you'll be okay. So don't leave. Do you promise?"

"She's still shaking! I'll get a sedative."

A pain in my neck.

"Kelsey!" I heard my name being called like I was in a dark deep hole.

My vision faded away...
