Hey guys! Some of you may have read my ongoing stories, The Gift Of Gods or Two Sides Of The Same Coin. If you haven't, I encourage you to check those out! (Two Sides Of The Same Coin is a Harry Potter/Percy Jackson crossover.)
Anywho, this is basically going to be everything I don't like about Percy Jackson fanfictions. From cliches, to odd pairings, to OC characters, the works!
Chapter One: Pertemis
Okay, so I know that a lot of people like the ship Pertemis, or Percy and Artemis. If you ship Pertemis, good for you! You are entitled to your own opinion and I will not take it away. But I have some huge problems with it!
1. Source Material
I've read quite a few Pertemis fanfictions, and one thing I can honestly say is that they all feel really forced. The dialogue is super cheesy and weird, and don't even get me started on the internal dialogue that some writers are forced to use. Both of these are mainly because there simply isn't enough source material from the original books to work with.
Because Rick Riordan only included Artemis in one book (I think), and she wasn't Percy's love interest, anyone who writes Pertemis fanfiction is forced to conjure all those feelings out of nowhere. Unless said fanfiction writer began the whole book series over again with Artemis as the main love interest, the whole story feels kind of rushed and unrealistic.
2. Annabeth!
I know that in most Pertemis fanfictions, Annabeth betrays Percy, or they broke up, or whatever. But would Annabeth do that? NO. My point is that unless the fanfiction writer has multiple chapters of build-up, the story will once again come out as rushed.
3. ARTEMIS IS AN ETERNAL MAIDEN
This is one of the biggest issues with these stories. ARTEMIS SWORE TO NEVER MARRY. NO BOYS, EVER. As the literal goddess of single women, she would never, and I repeat NEVER date anyone. Now, some stories have the excuse that, "He was the only man she ever approved of." But does that mean should would fall in love with him? No. I can think of not one, but TWO men that she allowed to join the hunt in greek myths. Orion, and Hippolytos. Percy was not the only man she ever approved of. And why would you fall in love with someone just because they aren't as bad as the others? That's like agreeing to go out with someone just because they don't completely repulse you.
Also, what would happen if they actually did fall in love? Percy would eventually die. The end. Well, that wasn't a very interesting story, was it? I guess my point is that there is a reason that gods and demigods don't fall in love. Number one being that THAT'S GROSS, and Number Two being that the demigod would eventually die. And back to number one, why would you date your sibling's kid? YUCK.
4. ARTEMIS IS TWELVE
I know, I know, She's not really twelve. But she usually appears as twelve! And she was a twelve year-old when Percy met her! There would be zero attraction between Percy and a twelve-year-old moon goddess.
5. It's just plain unrealistic
The idea of Percy suddenly falling in love with Artemis is just confusing to me. He saved her life ONCE. She was only included in ONE book. That's not much of a premise for "true love."
I honestly don't know where Pertemis even started. I mean, was it the quest in the third book? Because I will remind everyone that Percy did NOT go on that quest to save Artemis. He snuck away, against the rules AND the prophecy (or so everyone thought), to save ANNABETH. Not Artemis, ANNABETH. Now, I'm a little biased because I ship Percabeth, but I'm generally pretty open-minded about new things. I am just genuinely confused on how this ship even works.
Did you like it? Maybe? You don't have to like it, I'm just bored and needed something to do.
Once again, I am going to stress the fact that if you ship Pertemis, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that. You do you, and I'll do me.
