Okay. I'm back. It's been a while. I don't think anyone really reads this though, so oh well. Enjoy this one!

Daughter of Poseidon? Seriously?

Okay, really. See, this is why my story is called But Why Though?. It's fanfics like these that just rip my brain out and stomp on it. Then they put it through a paper shredder for good measure. I can't for the life of me figure these things out.

If you didn't read the title of this particular rant, I'm talking about the oddly (and allegedly) popular cliche, Daughter of Poseidon. That's just the name I gave it, I don't think it really has a preference.

Usually in these stories, a teenage girl with a really weird name, like Escadia, or Allegradina or something, is a daughter of Poseidon. Yippee. That's my first issue. I'm all for girl power, I think it's great. Love girl power. I also understand creativity and stuff. I know that when you get an idea, you should do it. But these fics just end up making me mad. Really, one time I threw a chair.

The reason I react that way is 1) cause I'm a little weird, 2) I like throwing chairs sometimes (who doesn't?), and 3) we already have a perfectly good son of Poseidon! And I know, I know, creativity and stuff. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Some of these stories literally just make Percy a girl, and that's it. That's not creativity. There's no twist, nothing to make the story different except the gender of the main character. The writer did no work to make the story theirs. It's just a piggyback on Rick Riordan's idea.

I know what you're thinking. "Isn't all fanfiction a piggyback on the original author?"

Yes and no. I can see someone making a valid argument for that statement, but my point remains the same; fanfiction exists so that creative and intelligent people can expand on an author's work. You add new elements, create new circumstances, expand characters and develop them in your own way. And maybe there's a Daughter of Poseidon story out there that does exactly that, but I haven't found it.

Some of these fics create a new character and revolve the whole story around them. (They also come up with the really awful names, but that's none of my business.) At that point, it's no longer fanfiction. That doesn't mean it isn't good, but it's so OC that no one can enjoy it. (I mean, I can't. I don't know about anybody else.)

Maybe you disagree with me, and that's perfectly fine. Healthy, even. But if you're still reading, you probably agree with what I'm about to say.

The second reason that I dislike Daughter of Poseidon stories is a simple one. IT'S NOT PERCY!

Like most fangirls, Percy Jackson is my soulmate. (But I'm still a hardcore Percabeth shipper.) So by taking him out of the story, or turning him into a girl, or giving him a sister that's way too OP, I am automatically not going to like it. I'm not saying that I never will, my opinion might change someday, but not right now. I'm also not saying that I have a problem with a story deciding to genderbend, a lot of people like that kind of thing, and that's fine. It just wouldn't be my first pick if I had to choose something to read. It's a little too distracting for me, I guess.

Anyway, for the same reasons that I didn't (and still don't) like Jason when he was first introduced, I don't find myself rooting for any of the main characters of these stories. They just keep trying to one-up, outshine, or replace Percy. Not cool.

The third reason that these fics put my brain through a paper shredder is the cliche aspect of them. If you're familiar with my position on cliches, you know what's coming.

Daughter of Poseidon stories seem to have gotten more popular recently, for better or worse. Similarly to the Chaos and Percabeth At Highschool tropes, the more something gets written, the worse it gets. I'm talking bad grammar, spelling, pacing, you name it. Combine those problems with an already weak storyline, and you might as well get the paper shredder out now.

The other problem with cliches is the repetition. No one likes to read the same thing over and over, and it can get really ridiculous. It also causes problems for writers who want to try their hand at the story, but can't find a way to put any unique twists on it because it's been done too much. Don't get me wrong, miracles happen, and occasionally someone will write a (dare I say it) good version of it. But don't hold your breath.

I mean, that's kind of it. If this were YouTube, I'd say something overly cheerful, like "Don't forget to like and subscribe!" and smile really big until I looked constipated. But thank goodness it's not, and I don't have to do that.

I'm LadyHW, and you're reading FANFICTION. (doo doo doo doo do) (An attempt was made.)
