Chapter 14

September 3rd 1988

Hogwarts

The first day of classes was Harry and Daphne were sitting in one of the couches in the Slytherin Common Room.

They were working on an assignment when they saw one of the other first years, Theodore Fawley, walking over to them flanked by Marcus Flint and Lucian Bole

"Daphne Greengrass," drawled Fawley, who approached the two of them while his goons stood behind him.

Daphne immediately tensed when Fawley addressed her. "Yes, Theodore?"

"Why are you sitting with him? When there's a spare seat with me and the other important first years."

"I'm fine here," Daphne answered politely, "Thanks."

"Really?" Theodore's eyes went from Daphne to Harry before he shook his head. "You'd rather be with a half-blood?"

Daphne immediately stiffened at the comment.

"Go away, Fawley," Daphne said coldly.

"No one wants you here, Fawley." Harry added, taking out his wand.

"The same could be said about you, Potter. The house of Slytherin is for the best of the Wizarding world like us," Fawley declared pompously.

Some of the Slytherins nearby who had been silently watching the interaction of the first years whispered their agreement. This only made Harry even angrier. How could anyone agree with a jackass like him?

He didint really care about his own blood status.

Even though the Potters had left him at the Dursleys they were strong and admired members of society regardless of blood status.

But it turns out Blood Status mattered a lot to Slytherins and was quite a big deal.

Thankfully one of the Prefects Farley was able to drag Fawley away before anything else could happen since Gemma did not want an open fight in the middle of Slytherin Common Room.

Something about decorum and appearances or the like.

Daphne and Harry quickly then decided to go back to his room to talk.

"Im sorry"Harry said "I wish you didint have to deal with idiots like that".

Daphne shook her head "I knew i would have to for quite some time due to my familys wealth and my own looks"She said softly "Even though i know your not a fan of the Potters

I'm sorry that your blood status is such a problem in this house".

"It doesn't have to be like that," Harry found himself saying, surprised by his words and his strong tone.

"What are you talking about?" asked a confused Daphne.

It took him a second or two to answer trying to ignore the doubt that was starting to bubble in his stomach. "We shouldn't have to accept this treatment from our own housemates.".

"We can change it."

Daphne seemed to think "If you wanted to be in a house of equality, you should have gone in one of the others because that's not Slytherin."

"I know"Harry said."You know we're already pariahs in this school because we're in Slytherin. If we don't even have our own house backing us then that could be a problem".

"I agree"Daphne said smiling "Could there be anything more ambitious than changing Slytherin?"

Harry nodded "I don't want to belong to a house of bullies and bigots and i dont like the idea of people like Fawley flourishing due to their meanness and things like blood purity".

Daphne agreed and soon the two of them were back in his room to finish their assignment

SCENE CHANGE

A few days later Harry and Daphne walked with their fellow Slytherin students to the Quidditch Pitch for their Flying Lesson with Ravenclaw.

Arriving outside they found Madam Hooch standing between two lines of broomsticks.

"Well, what are you all waiting for an invitation?" Madam Hooch barked. "Everyone stand by a broomstick if you don't have one or put yours by your side if you do. Come on, hurry up."

The students hurried to either place the broom on the ground and stand next to it or stand next to one of the school brooms.

Before they started Madam Hooch went to the students' brooms and cast a few standard diagnostic charms before moving back to her spot.

"Stick out your right hand over your broom, and say 'Up!'" Madam Hooch instructed.

The students followed her instructions and Harry and Daphne were thrilled that his broom responded by jumping into their hand.

And as it turned out they were the only two who got it on the first try.

After everyone had managed to get their brooms to fly to their hands, Madam Hooch went around the group giving instructions on the best grips, and how to steer, including how to brake and accelerate.

It wasn't all that complicated, to be honest.

Madam Hooch got all the students attention

"Now, when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight back down by leaning forwards slightly. On my whistle – three – two -"

SCENE CHANGE

After Flying Practice was over Daphne went back to her room to finish writing up a letter for home and Harry went to the library to look for a Transfiguration book he was interested in after he had heard about it from McGonogal.

Walking back to the Slytherin Common Room though Harry wasn't paying attention to his surroundings and it cost him. He felt a heavy punch to his gut that brought him to his knees. The air sucked out from him making him wheeze with pain. He hugged his stomach while gasping for breath. Harry looked up in time to see a fist collide with his cheek sending him stumbling backwards. A burst of pain blooming from his face, and then he lost his balance with his head slamming against the floor. He cried out, at the sharp pain that lanced from where he hit his head. His face was swelling and his ears were ringing.

Dizzy and still breathing heavily, Harry saw Fawley's smirk coming into view.

"You thought you could defy and threaten me?" He hissed, "You're just the unwanted son of a filthy mudblood and a blood traitor." His eyes flashed, "Sadly they did not get what they deserved".

Harry's insides felt like they were bouncing around behind his ribs.

"But you can" Fawley kicked him hard in the ribs.

Harry cried out. The breath knocked out of him leaving him breathing haggardly. He groaned at the pain, it hurt to breathe. Can no one hear me? He thought desperately, hoping his shouts or cries would get someone to come investigate. No one came. Harry curled into a ball, hugging his ribs.

Theodore smoothed his robes when he stood back up. He pulled out his wand. "Petrifcus Totalus."

Harry felt his legs shoot forward while his arms slapped to his sides. He went rigid. He tried to move his hands and feet but to his horror he couldn't budge. He was stuck and the only thing he could control were his eyes.

"Stick him in the broom closet," Theodore ordered.

Flint and Bole grabbed Harry by his arms. Their fingers digging into his skin as they dragged him to a broom closet across the corridor. They threw him into it unable to control himself, he helplessly smashed his back into the wall with a crack. His body slid down before falling into a rigid and uncomfortable position.

"Perhaps some time to yourself will make you realize the order of things around here," Fawley was in the doorway. "You shouldnt have tried to get between me and Greengrass and I'll be expecting an apology the next time I see you," He paused, "Whenever that'll be," He grinned viciously before laughing.

That was the last thing Harry saw before the door was slammed shut. His heart lurched when he heard the doorknob being locked by some spell Fawley had used.

He was in darkness. He couldn't wince. He couldn't grimace. He couldn't move anything. The pain was beginning to numb, throughout his chest and face. It was a small mercy.

A torrent of emotions were churning through him. Burning fury for what Theodore did to him, but it was also at himself for not paying attention. The shame was next. Embarrassment that easily clouded over the anger,

Theodore will pay for this, Harry vowed, he had never felt so angry before. It felt as if his blood was burning. It coursed through him, every fiber in him was dedicated to hating Theodore Fawley.

With a roar of anger Harry felt an explosion and the closet explode.

Looking around in shock Harry saw he was standing in the hallway with his feelings returning and seeing parts of the closet on fire.

Oh no.

Had he done that.

Hurriedly he used a Augamenti to clear some of the flames away.

Finishing with that he turned back to the common room not even thinking of how he knew to use Augamenti.

He was able to reach the Slytherin common room entrance without any problems and the door opened for him when he said the password.

His anger surfaced upon seeing Fawley. It was bubbling up inside him, threatening to burst.

"Back so soon, Potter? I hadn't thought I'd see you until tomorrow."Fawley sneered, "Now, isn't there something you want to tell me?

Something went off in Harry's mind. Something he couldn't explain or even control, but at seeing Theodore gloating something clicked and it pushed Harry over the edge. The dam had burst and his anger was free. All he could see was red.

Harry punched him. He put all of his strength behind it, all of his anger, all of his rage, wanting to hurt Theodore, wanting to shut him up. It seemed to happen in slow motion, he could see Theodore's eyes widen in disbelief just before Harry's fist connected with Theodores's face.

Fawley stumbled backwards, but Harry pounced again. He lowered his head and lunged at the reeling Theodore, tackling him to the ground with Harry getting on top of him. He punched again and again. He heard a sickening crunch after his second punch signifying that he had broken his nose. It was some detached observation from what sounded like a far away voice in Harrys mind, but he paid it no heed, because a broken nose didn't sate his rage. He saw Thedores actions in the hallway and how he had wanted Daphne and that made Harry punch him, again and again and again.

He felt his heart thundering in his chest. His breathing was beginning to shift from the exertion, but Harry didn't care. He raised his fist to deliver another punch, but he was stopped. He felt a large hand gripping his arm and it then forced him off the bleeding and beaten Fawley. He immediately thought it was Flint or Boyle so Harry spun around to throw a punch with his other hand to try to wrench himself free, but it was caught. Forcing Harry to see who it was who intervened. It wasn't Fawley's goons. It was the prefect, Rosier. The Slytherin was silent in his staring at Harry, but just before he let go of Harry, he nodded to him in a weird sort of respect.

Free, Harry looked around the deathly quiet common room to see none of the Slytherins had moved. Those other Purebloods had done nothing for Fawley while he got himself beaten up. They were staring at Harry, but none of them were wearing their usual haughty smirks.

Harry then felt his stomach churn as he saw Daphne off in the distance looking at the scene in shock.

Theodore was moaning on the ground, rolling in pain. His face was swollen and smeared with blood. His nose was sticking out at an odd angle and he was shrieking bloody murder.

"What is going on here?" Severus Snape entered the common room. His black eyes went from Harry to then Theodore, who was bleeding on the ground, "Potter, explain!"

Harry smoothed the front of his robes with his bloodied knuckles. "We're just settling an in-house problem, sir."

Snape's lip actually quirked at this answer but it went unnoticed since the rest of the Slytherins were staring at either Harry or Fawley. "And what problem was that?"

"I stood up to Theodore when he was hitting inappropriately on my best friend so he got his revenge by jumping me with his goons and stuffing me in a closet."

That brought murmuring throughout the common room and Harry stole a glance to see the Slytherins didn't look pleased with that. It was a slight shift, but it was a shift that showed their clear disapproval of Fawley's foolishness and extreme manner of handling things.

Snape's eyes looked at both of them. "This matter has been resolved. I'll not allow two first years to divide this house over something as pathetic as your little egos," He said coldly. "Theodore you overreacted and now for both of you this is settled." He gestured to the common room, "agreed?" The other Slytherins mumbled their assent to their head of house, confirming his judgment.

"Yes, sir," Harry and Theodore grumbled.

Snape nodded, accepting their answer. "Now, Theo come along I'll fix you up in my office."

When Theodore and their Head of House left, the Slytherin common room went into a frenzy of noise, whispering and murmuring about everything that had just happened.

Harry ignored all of it and made his way over to where Daphne was waiting for him and who gestured for him to follow her.

"What happened"She asked worridly.

"Fawley and his goods attacked me"He replied grufly "They surprised me and stuffed me in a closet".

"How did you get out"Daphne asked.

Harry held his head sheepishly "I got so angry"He said "That i think i was able to use a form of magic that Master Dao will be teaching me in the future to escape".

Daphne hugged him "I'm glad you're safe"She said "But I do worry about your way of handling the problem."

Harry chuckled, looking down at his bruised knuckles. "Thanks, I think." He scratched the back of his neck. The thrill of the fight had left him drained and confused. The anger had been sated and then disappeared. "It wasn't very Slytherin."

"It wasn't exactly subtle," Daphne agreed with a nod, but she didn't look disappointed at all.

"How can I be a great wizard if I allow my anger and hate to consume me"? Harry asked, sighing. "To control me? I hadn't thought or planned out anything when i attacked Theodore and i had let my anger blind and then control me"

"I can do better. I'll be better".Harry promised "I'm sorry you had to see me like that Daph".

She looked at him warmly "Harry i dont like to see things like that"Daphne said "But i know their are bad people in the world and that in order to deal with them properly you sometimes need to get into the gutter yourself".

"I don't blame you Harry"Daphne said "But you need a guide someone to make sure that you don't lose yourself in the process of achieving the good that i know you can do".

"Will you be that guide Daph?"Harry asked softly.

"I'll do my very best "She replied.
