When I awoke, it was dark. I glanced at my phone to see the time. It was 9:45. I groaned. My head hurt so bad. And my whole body was sore, but I was free. For the first time in a long time, I felt peace. I had no idea where I was gonna go or what I was gonna do, but I felt at peace. That is until I heard two familiar voices calling my name. I cringed. I needed to find a better place to hide farther away from them. I waited till I could no longer hear their voices, and then I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, not caring where I went. I kept looking over my shoulder, making sure they weren't following me. Then, I bumped into something, or should I say, someone. Scared, I bumped into Frank or Debbie. I hesitantly looked up. However, the person I bumped into was not Frank or Debbie, but my Biology teacher Mr. Smith.

"Crystal? What are you doing here?" He looked at me with worry in his eyes. "Are you okay?"

Tears of relief filled my eyes as I collapsed into him crying. I didn't care how weak or how silly I looked. I was just happy that there was someone with me. Someone safe. I felt his arms wrap around me in a tight embrace as he tried to comfort me.

"It's okay, sweetheart." He said, rubbing my back. "You're safe." And with those words, out of complete pain and exhaustion, I fell fast asleep.

When I awoke, I saw I was in a room that looked like a hospital room. The sheets were white, and there was the quiet rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. I looked down at myself. There was an IV hooked into me, and all my wounds were bandaged neatly. I wondered what time it was and how I got here. Then, I remembered the events that happened last night, me running away, bumping into Mr. Smith, and collapsing out of pure exhaustion. A wave of relief washed over me. I was safe. Just then, the door opened, and Mr. Smith walked in with a glass of water and what looked to be a bowl of apple sauce.

"Ah! Brilliant! You're awake." He grinned, setting the apple sauce and water on a bedside table. "You were out for quite some time. How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling much better," I said, sitting up in my bed. Grabbing the glass of water and chugging it. "But, just out of curiosity. How long was I asleep for?"

"Oh, about 2 days." He said whilst looking at his watch.

"Two days!?" I exclaimed, my eyes widening in shock!

"Oh, don't worry. You didn't miss much." He said, chuckling at my response, "just a bunch of giant apes." He muttered.

"Wait, What?" I asked, thinking we could revisit what he said about the giant apes.

"Well then!" He said, "Moving on! Let's talk about what happened that night you bumped into me." His tone getting slightly more serious. "What happened that night, Crystal? And I want the truth." His eyes were practically peering into my soul.

Tears began to form in my eyes. I wasn't sure how to answer him or if I even should trust him. After all, I've only known him for a few days. Even if he was my teacher, I didn't feel completely safe telling him my whole life story.

"Crystal, I can promise you I am safe." He says as he reaches out, putting a hand on my shoulder.

"I-I had to leave," I said as a few tears ran down my cheek. "They would've killed me if I didn't." I sniffed. "So I ran, not caring where I would go, what I would do, how I would get money, or even where I would get food."

"Who tried to kill you?" Mr. Smith asked with concern.

I took a deep breath in to prevent myself from bursting into tears, "My adopted mother and her boyfriend."

Mr. Smith's expression turned into one of empathy "What did they do to you to make you run away?" He asked bluntly.

My breath hitched, and it took everything in me to keep myself together. "If you wouldn't mind Mr. Smith, I'd rather not talk about it." He simply nodded with understanding.

"Of course, I don't mind." He said, giving me a reassuring smile. "I'll let you rest a little longer. Even though you just woke up, it's almost two in the morning."

He got up from where he was sitting and headed towards the door before stopping suddenly and turning to me.

"Oh, and by the way, Mr. Smith is not my real name. I'm the doctor."

"Doctor who?" I asked, confused why he said his name was Mr. Smith if it wasn't actually his name.

"Just the Doctor." He answered back.

"That's a very unusual name," I stated He chuckled at that.

"Sleep tight, Crystal, get some rest. I'll see you in the morning."

"Goodnight, Doctor," I said, turning over letting sleep take me once again.
