Chapter 3

Aaron woke a little past seven the next morning. He rolled out of bed, pulled on a pair of cotton pants, slipped into his slides, and headed to the bathroom. Five minutes later, he had the coffee pot brewing in the suite's kitchenette. He looked at the open door to the master bedroom of the suite and couldn't resist, heading towards it.

Getting to the doorway, he looked and smiled. Zach, like always, was sleeping on the right side of the bed on his left side. Jack was at the other side of the bed. Aaron smiled at the lump under the sheet and blanket in the middle of the bed. He snapped a pic on his cellphone and sent it Caleigh and Beth.

"They still conked out?" John softly asked heading across the suite wearing his pajama bottoms and a white t-shirt. Aaron nodded with a smile, pointing at John to look in.

John shook his head with a smile. "He's like his dad," John said as they both walked away from the door. "I remember when you and Haley visited when Zach was a toddler and you were on your AL from the Seattle field office. Haley warned Hannah and me where we would find Zach in the morning."

Aaron smiled. "Zach always has given Jack hell about being a million miler in bed. Truth be told…"

John smiled. "We found our first grandson at the bottom of the bed every morning."

"Yup," Aaron smiled. He looked at John. "How'd you sleep?"

John smiled back at him. "Aaron, you're the Chief of a specialized FBI Unit that does profiles. Please tell me you noticed my hearing aids on their charger in our bathroom." Aaron smiled, rubbing his shoulder. "Just tell me you slept through my snoring and getting up twice to piss."

Aaron looked at John. "When the team is out on a case, I share a standard hotel room with Dave. The world-class snorer." John grinned back at him. "I didn't hear a thing either," Aaron winked at him with the smile that his two sons inherited.

John grinned. "Who's showering first?"

Aaron looked at him. "How bad do you want hotel room coffee that is swill?"

"I've heard rumors that's what you and your team is used to," John retorted.

"It doesn't make it any better," Aaron fired back with a smile. "I'll shower. If you want to shave while I'm in there, I have no problem dad."

"Let's do it," John smiled. As they were walking to their bedroom, John touched Aaron's arm. "What about breakfast this morning?"

Aaron smiled. "Welcome to the Atlanta Braves' family. The buffet will blow you away." He looked at John. "You have your hearing aids in?" John nodded. "Don't forget to take them out before you shower," Aaron winked.

"Yes dear," John snarked back at him. Aaron deeply laughed, rubbing his shoulder.

Twenty minutes later, they both were showered, shaved and dressed for the morning, standing in the kitchenette. Aaron poured John a cup of coffee. John looked into the cup and then at Aaron. "That doesn't even smell good."

"I know," Aaron smiled, pouring his own as John added two creamers to his cup. "It's just a booster until the boys get up and we get downstairs."

"For God and country," John smiled raising his cup to Aaron. Aaron clinked John's coffee cup with his own. Taking a sip, they heard soft laughter coming from the boys' bedroom. They walked to the doorway with their cups of coffee and looked in. Trevor was sitting on his dad's stomach.

"Daddy, I'z hungry," Trev said.

"I'm there too son," Zach smiled. "You get Uncle Jack awake. I gotta pee."

"Me too daddy."

"First things first," Zach smiled, rolling out of bed with Trev in his arms. He nodded at Trev to the doorway. "The peanut gallery is awake," he smiled at Trev.

"Daddy?"

"Grandpa and gramp-gramp." Zach smiled at Trev, heading to the bathroom.

"Sorry Grandpa," Trev waved at Aaron. "I gotta go."

"Take care of business," Aaron smiled at Trev.

Jack rolled onto his back, yawning."Why does no one around here appreciate sleeping in?" Aaron and John smiled at each other, moving away from the doorway.

A half-hour later, the five from the Hotchner suite were waiting for the elevator as the Minton family joined them. "Hi Uncle Zach," AJ smiled at him.

"Hi sweetheart," Zach smiled, pulling her into his arms. He kissed her cheek. "How are you?"

"Hungry," AJ smiled back. The elevator door opened.

"I think that's unanimous," Jack snarked, getting on the elevator, sharing a high five with Gabe.

Andy smiled at Aaron and John as they all got into the elevator. "How'd you two bunkies do?"

"I had my hearing aids out," John smiled.

"And I room with Dave when the team is out," Aaron added.

"Enough said," Andy smiled.

They all got off the elevator on the first floor and headed to the ballroom. Walking in, John shook his head at Aaron. Aaron smiled. "Welcome to the hospitality of the Atlanta Braves."

While they were eating, Zach's cell rang. "Hi babe," he answered with a smile. "How are you?"

"I'm fine and we're all missing our guys," Caleigh answered. "We saw on ESPN last night what Jack scored on the autographs. They showed a shot of all of you watching the Derby with Charlie sitting on Freddie's shoulders."

"That was when Shohei was hitting bombs into the third deck," Zach smiled. "Gotta love the thin mountain air. And Cal, Jack scored bigger."

"Mike came through for him?" Caleigh asked.

"Big time babe," Zach smiled. "How was your day yesterday?"

"Taylor loved shopping with grandma and gram-gram. She scored big time as you can imagine."

Zach looked at his dad and grandpa. "Plastic successfully burned," he grinned.

"And I loved our ladies pedicure afternoon together while Tay was napping with Gabby at the house," Caleigh added.

"Sounds great Cal," Zach said. "Please do me a favor."

"What?" Caleigh said.

"Make me an appointment Thursday morning for a Pedi. I could use one as well. I feel like I'm walking on sandpaper."

Caleigh smiled. "Uncle Dave said the same thing when we got home. I'll set the two of you up."

"Thanks babe. How's he doing?"

"I'm getting a lot of writing done and enjoying being lifeguard," Dave said. Caleigh had put her phone on speaker. Zach did the same.

"Hi mama," Trev said. "I haz five dollar pancakes!"

"That would be silver dollar sized pancakes," Zach smiled.

"He's my son too lover," Caleigh smiled. "I speak Trev." John and Aaron smiled. "And I'm assuming you and Jack overworked the omelet chef."

"They weren't the only ones," John said.

"Grandpa enjoy this afternoon and tonight," Caleigh said. "We'll be watching."

"I can't wait," John smiled.

-00CM00-

Part of the big experience of All-Star day for the players and the fans was the red carpet arrival of the players to the stadium with their families that afternoon. Everyone in the Atlanta home was watching MLB channel's coverage around the pool. Or in Taylor, Miguel and Rashad's case, in the pool. Dave was in his usual lifeguard patio chair.

They all smiled at the Mintons on the red carpet. "Wow," Beth said. "I love Victoria's dress."

"So do I," Hannah smiled.

"Vic is my fashionista," Caleigh grinned. "She's good."

Fifteen minutes later, Heidi Watney, MLB Network's sideline reporter looked at the crowd. "Down ladies. I know they're five hot guys. But they're taken or underage," she smiled, walking up to the group. All of the Hotchner men and John were in suit pants and coats with an open collar dress shirt and black shoes.

Zach was holding Trev's hand as they came up the red carpet. Heidi winked at Zach as the camerawoman got in place. Heidi got down on her knees in front of Trev. "Hi you," she smiled. "You're Trevor Hotchner." Trev bobbed his head with his usual shy grin. "And you are styling my man," she grinned. "Who's this?" Heidi pointed at Zach.

"Dat's daddy," Trev smiled. Zach pulled Trev up to his chest with his left arm while holding out his right hand to Heidi to help her get to her feet. John smiled at Aaron.

"Thanks Zach, always the gentleman," Heidi softly smiled, turning to the crowd. "Welcome the National League's highest vote getter Zach Hotchner from the Atlanta Braves!" Zach waved at the crowd as they loudly applauded. "First off Zach, where are the ladies?"

"Caleigh is three to four weeks out with baby number three. Dr. Laura said a firm no on her flying. So she's in our Atlanta home with Taylor, my step-mom and grandma with all of them thoroughly enjoying girl time. Rumor has it pedicures were involved yesterday," he grinned.

"Gotta love a pedi," Heidi smiled. "What does being the highest vote getter mean to you Zach?"

Zach shook his head. "The wonderful fans of this game appreciates the work ethic I've learned from these two," Zach smiled, nodding at his dad and grandfather. "It's really special for me to have our family's four generations here."

Heidi smiled at Trev. "Who's this?" she nodded.

"Dat's Uncle Jack," Trev smiled.

Heidi moved to Jack. "Speaking of rumors, you scored a lot autographs yesterday," she smiled.

Jack, standing next to Zach with the top of his head now nearly reaching to Zach's shoulder with his recent growth spurt, grinned. "Yeah I did. But meeting all the guys and getting to spend some time with them was better."

Heidi looked at Trev and put the mic back to him. "Who's this?" she smiled with a point.

"Dat's grandpa," Trev grinned.

"Aaron, this has to be a proud moment for you," Heidi said.

"Yes it is," Aaron smiled. "To see my oldest son get the honor of being here and all of us along is a memory I'll treasure."

Heidi looked at Trev with a smile. "And who is this?" she smiled, pointing at John.

"Dat's gramp-gramp." Trev broadly grinned.

"So I've got to move to the man of the hour of these four generations," Heidi smiled. "You're John Brooks, the father of Zach and Jack's mother. Tell me how you feel right now." Beth, in the pool area with Hannah, put her arm around Hannah's shoulder.

John smiled. "My heart is swelling with pride Heidi. I'm so proud of both of them," he smiled at the boys. "They've been the Brothers Hotchner through this ride of Zach's career. And I know in my heart how proud Haley is of them.

"Being able to live to the age I am, with my health, is a gift." he added, looking at Heidi. "To live long enough to see two great-grandchildren is a blessing. And God-willing, a third," he grinned. He nodded to the sky. "And the sun shining on all this today is me thinking that Haley is here, enjoying this with all of us." Aaron deeply smiled, rubbing John's shoulder as Zach pulled Jack to him.

"A beautiful day to honor a beautiful lady," Heidi smiled at John. "But I've got to ask your grandson one more question," Heidi said.

"I know him," John grinned. "Good luck with getting a straight answer."

Heidi moved to Zach. "Does grandpa have an inside track on how you and Andy Minton, your Braves' battery mate, will pitch the lethal starting line-up of the AL team?"

"Grandpa knows Minnie's and my game plan," Zach said. "And won't give away our secrets," Zach grinned.

-00CM00-

John Brooks highly enjoyed the pre-game festivities. He smiled at Aaron who was holding Trev while they enjoyed it all as well. "Watching on TV doesn't do justice to it," John grinned.

"No, it doesn't," Aaron smiled back at him.

"Grandpa, planes loud," Trev noted. The Air Force Academy jet flyover at the end of the National Anthem was spectacular.

"Yes they were Trev," Aaron smiled.

John smiled at Aaron. "Good thing you covered his ears."

Zach and Andy's game plan was the usual. Locate and throw the pitches. Andy induced Shohei Ohtani, the AL superstar pitcher and baseball's leading homerun hitter, into a first pitch groundout to Nolan Arceando playing third base. Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. weakly ground out to Freddie on Andy's change up.

Mike Trout walked up to the plate and smiled at Zach. They both were wired for sound for the Fox broadcast. "This should be interesting," Joe Buck, the Fox broadcaster said.

"So when am I going to get the Miguel slider Cob?" Mike asked, digging in. The families watching in the Lawrenceville neighborhood all smiled.

"With you sitting on that Brookie?" Zach retorted back. "Andy and I love Miguel too much." The Georgia families smiled more with Pedro rubbing Miguel's head.

Andy got ahead two strikes. Then Trout fouled off four in a row. "OK," Mike smiled. "I've seen the backdoor fastball, the cutter and curve, along with the heater. Twice. What ya throwing at me next?"

"Brookie, you do know we're just playing with you to help the TV ratings," Zach smiled at Mike.

Joe West, the home plate umpire, smiled at the two of them. "Why I love doing this game." Trout looked at him. "Putting up with the likes of you two's bullshit," Joe grinned.

West rang up Trout a pitch later on a called strike. Mike looked at Zach. "That was it wasn't it?"

Zach smiled at Mike, tossing the ball away. "Miguel says you're welcome," Zach grinned. Beth and Hannah shared a high-five. A flurry of texts went through the neighborhood along with Victoria at the game.

In the bottom half of the first inning, Freddie scorched a double down the right field line. Zach singled him home two pitches later.

Two innings later, Zach, Andy and Freddie were done playing so the fans could see other players. Aaron rubbed Victoria's shoulder, sitting in front of him. "Ready to head out?" he smiled at her.

"Yes," she smiled back. "I've got one cutting molars." Jack scooped up AJ.

John looked at Aaron, wearing his Braves' jersey matching Zach's like Trevor, Jack and Aaron were wearing. "Is that allowed?" Like always through the All-Star experience, family members were changed out of their red carpet wardrobes. It was another thing Jenny Porter took care of.

"More than allowed grandpa," Jack said, putting AJ on her feet in the aisle, holding her hand. "And you've said before you'd rather watch the game in your recliner." Jack looked at him with his smile. "Think the suite would work?"

"Got it," John smiled.

Chelsea Freeman, with Charlie, smiled at them. "We're in too." Aaron, holding Trevor, smiled at the Freemans to go in front of him.

John looked at Aaron. "I've got Victoria and Gabe," he smiled, getting the two of them to the aisle.

Chelsea smiled at Victoria. "Four generation man up help is amazing."

"Yes it is," Vic smiled, rubbing John's shoulder.

-00CM00-

By four o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the four generations of Hotchners were back home and enjoying the pool area. John was even in the pool with the twins. Zach looked at his dad. "Yes, I'm drinking beer this afternoon. And it might be an evening session with Uncle Dave. I've got tomorrow off."

"Just don't expect me to keep up with you," Aaron smiled backed. "And don't burn the chicken. Grandma and grandpa are looking forward to that."

Zach grinned. "I've perfected cooking chicken. It's a three beer process." Aaron smiled at his oldest son shaking his head. Zach rubbed his dad's shoulder with his bullshit smile. Two hours later, the family enjoyed a wonderful dinner.

After the twins were in bed, everyone was relaxing in the main house. Zach smiled at Jack and handed him the cribbage board and deck of cards. Jack took them to the nook table. "Grandpa, you promised you would play cribbage with Zach and me on the plane home earlier."

"I think we can find enough players for a six-handed game," Zach said to Jack. "You, me and a player to be named later taking on the elder statesmen," Zach winked at Jack.

Dave looked at Aaron. "I don't appreciate the elder statesmen comment, but it does fit," he smiled. "What say we take the boys on and teach them an elder statesmen lesson?" he asked with a smile at John.

John, getting out of the recliner, shook his head at Dave. "You don't know the card shark 'player to be named later' the boys are talking about." Hannah cracked her knuckles. Caleigh and Beth laughed.

Dave looked at Aaron. "Let's just try to keep it close," Aaron said in his best Unit Chief voice.

John walked into the nook area. "If I'm about to get my butt kicked, I need some liquid fortitude."

Dave smiled at him. "I knew there was a reason I really like you."

"I'm bartending," Caleigh smiled. "Grandpa, I know I need two scotches," she smiled at Aaron and Dave.

"I'll take a little Bailey's Caleigh with a drop or two of my fellow elder statesmen's scotch," John smiled at her.

"I'll help you," Beth added, smiling at Caleigh. "Usual Zach?" she smiled.

"Please Beth," Zach smiled back. "Just don't make it an Uncle Dave pour. I want to sleep with my wife tonight without my ribs taking a beating."

"Wise decision," Caleigh snarked back at him.

"Got it," Beth replied.

Like Aaron predicted, grandma and her grandsons gave the elder statesmen a butt kicking. "That was fun," Dave grumbled, throwing his cards on the table. As most made their way to bed, Zach, Aaron and Dave enjoyed a nightcap.

-00CM00-

Thursday morning was another relaxing day for the family, enjoying the egg bake casseroles Caleigh and Beth had made the night before. Hannah shook her head at Jack and Trevor sharing another piece. "Grandma," Beth smiled. "Why do you think he's grown four inches since January," she nodded at Jack.

"At least he can reach the gas pedal driving," Zach snarked, putting in another bite. Jack hammered Zach's bicep with his fist.

"So when do I get the pleasure of riding with my youngest grandson driving now that he has his learner's permit?" John smiled.

"That's only valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia," Aaron said.

"Killjoy," Zach fired back. He got the Hotchner glare. "Dad, I've seen the grocery list for sliders and something extra," he winked at his grandmother, "for tomorrow with the boys coming over. Plus the taco dinner tonight that Jack and I requested."

"Plus other stuff needed," Caleigh added with a wink at Zach.

"And with all due respect to Beth's Honda, it's time for the kid to step up."

Jack looked at Zach. "No way," he whispered.

"Yes way," Zach smiled. "You're driving my truck. And dad," he added, looking at Aaron, "if we would happen to get stopped by an overly aggressive Lawrenceville patrol officer, do you really think he'll question me?"

Dave smiled, looking to the heavens. "Thank you god. He's finally learned that you can play the fame game card."

"You're not helping," Aaron growled at Dave. The rest all laughed.

"And you're not riding with us," Zach said, looking at his dad. Aaron looked at him. "My truck; my rules. I pay the insurance." Zach shook his head. "Dad, the only thing about witness protection that worked for me was I didn't have to learn how to drive with you. And I make no apologies about that. Mom and I joked about it." Zach smiled at his dad, rubbing his shoulder. "One my last great memories of her."

John smiled at Aaron. "Take that as a gift son."

"Dad, I learned more about driving with you than I did with my own mother. I get it," Aaron smiled at John, revealing a bit more about his past with his birth father and how Haley's parents supported him.

Zach looked at his dad. "You get to take Jack down to the Quantico driving facility once he gets more used to being behind the wheel. Then dad, step up," he smiled. "After he goes down there with Uncle Dave," Zach winked.

"Way ahead of you Zach," Aaron grinned back.

An hour later, Jack, Zach and John walked into the home, carrying grocery bags. Beth smiled at Jack. "How'd you do?" she smiled at Jack.

"Putting the truck into the grocery store parking slot was a challenge for me. I had to try twice," Jack confessed, hugging her. His head was now over her breasts.

"Teachable moment," Zach smiled at Beth, kissing her temple.

John looked at Aaron. "It was. And big brother was good and very patient with Jack."

"I learned a lot," Jack added. Caleigh smiled at him. "Yeah Cal, you're right. I'll take learning to drive in Beth's Honda." Everyone smiled.

"But hey Jack," Zach smiled. "You get to work out dad's SUV at the driving track at Quantico."

"I know a certain info queen to get the video of that," Dave snarked.

"Thanks a lot Uncle Dave," Jack snarked back.

Zach and Dave were getting ready to head out to their pedi appointment. Zach looked at Caleigh and smiled with a wink. Caleigh smiled back. "Yup. I got three of the ladies lined up for you."

"Three?" Dave asked.

Zach looked at him. "We take dumb ass along with us," he nodded at his dad.

Aaron looked at Beth. "Hotchner, I've listened to you complain coming home from cases about how bad your feet hurt after being on them so long. A pedi takes care of that."

"Yes it does dad," Zach added.

"Let me be the hammer," Dave said.

"Sorry Dave," John smiled. "You've supported this family too many times to count. This one is mine." He looked at Aaron. "I go with my bride every six weeks when she gets hers. The girls all tease me that I don't want my nails polished," he smiled. "But Aaron, I'm telling you. A pedi, to quote my grandsons, is the bomb."

"Boom!" Zach smiled at Caleigh.

Aaron smiled at Beth, coming into the home two hours later. "You were right," he said, kissing her. "Thank you." Zach winked at Dave.

Rashad, Miguel and Jack enjoyed their afternoon together with Zach joining them in the pool. The boys watched as Zach, Aaron and Dave taught Trev and Taylor how to swim. "That's how I learned," Jack whispered to his buds.

Aaron chased all the kids out of the pool. "You need a break and some hydration," he smiled. Even though the pool was bathed in its afternoon shade, it was a usual brutal Atlanta July afternoon with heat and humidity. The kids enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies Caleigh had made. After a late afternoon swim, everyone enjoyed the tacos dinner.

Dave looked at John, getting two of his own. "I can remember back when watching them," he nodded at Aaron, Zach and Jack, "eating these. I left the house, counting if I had all my fingers."

"Dave," John smiled, "you gotta admit. They're not bad."

Dave smiled. "John, I got the sermon from Zach long ago about all the ingredients. I'm in."

After the twins were in bed and the boys were off to game together, Caleigh smiled at the group. "If you don't mind, I'm going to head upstairs."

"Babe, you OK?" Zach asked.

"I'm fine," Caleigh smiled, kissing his cheek. "I didn't get my afternoon nap baking cookies. Baby and me are tired."

Zach kissed her. "Good night Cal. I'll be up in a bit. I think there might be another cribbage match."

Caleigh rubbed his shoulder. "Zach, I'm fine. Enjoy this."

It took Dave, Beth and Hannah a third game to beat Zach, Aaron and John. "Finally," Dave smugly smiled.

"Us oldsters are heading out," John smiled as Hannah got up. "Good night everyone." The rest bid them good night as they headed for the guesthouse.

Beth looked at the Aaron, Zach and Dave. "A nightcap?" she smiled.

Zach grinned. "You know the three of us."

-00CM00-

Miguel rolled onto his back the next morning, sharing the sofa bed with Rashad in Jack's room. He got up, went to the bathroom and came back, crawling back under the covers. He yawned and stretched. Like Jack, he was growing as well.

Yawning again, he noticed a smell wafting into the air of the room. He shook Rashad awake. "What dude?" Rashad mumbled, rolling on his back, yawning as well.

"Smell," Miguel demanded.

"Not a complete sentence dude," Rashad yawned back.

"Neither yours," Miguel zinged back. "Smell."

Rashad took a sniff as Jack sat up in his bed. "Gotta love grandma being here guys," Jack yawned.

"That for real?" Rashad asked.

"Yup," Jack said, stretching out. The boys heard the twins chattering with everyone in the breakfast nook.

"That's cinnamon rolls," Miguel said, getting out of bed. He pulled on a pair of sports shorts and a t-shirt. "You snooze, you lose," he said, getting into his slides and heading out of Jack's bedroom. Rashad and Jack smiled at each other, crawling out of their beds to catch up with Miguel.

"Mornin' you," Caleigh smiled as Miguel got into one of the lunch counter chairs. "You want one of these?" she asked, putting a warm cinnamon roll with creamed cheese icing onto a paper plate. Miguel nodded, yawning again.

"Total fail," Caleigh growled.

"Yes please," Miguel said.

"That's better," Caleigh smiled, giving him the roll. Hannah and John looked at Dave sitting together at the nook table with the three of them enjoying Hannah's rolls. Zach poured Miguel a glass of milk. Caleigh added a glass of apple juice.

"Tough love," Dave whispered. "It's working. That kid has made amazing strides thanks to Caleigh pushing him. We've all bought in." Jack and Rashad joined Miguel at the lunch counter.

Zach looked around. "How many sliders are Cal and I making this morning?"

Miguel looked at him. "I get another cinnamon roll please," he smiled at Caleigh, "I only need one."

Caleigh smiled at Miguel. "Thank you." Miguel smiled back at her as Caleigh gave Jack and Rashad each one of Hannah's cinnamon rolls. The family enjoyed a wonderful breakfast together with Hannah and John smiling at how the boys ate.

When Zach left to go to Truist Park that afternoon for the game Friday night, Rashad and Miguel headed back to their homes. The family enjoyed Beth's beef stroganoff casserole recipe she got from Rachel.

A little after one later that night, Zach came into he and Caleigh's bedroom, starting to take off his clothes. The Braves had won earlier with Zach providing the hit scoring Freddie for the walk-off win in extra innings; hence the late night getting home. Caleigh looked at him, lying on her back. "You might want to keep them on."

"Cal?"

"I had a twinge thirty minutes ago," Caleigh said, rubbing her abdomen. "I just had a contraction when you came into the room."

Zach started to walk out of the room. "Zach?" Caleigh questioned.

"I'm going to get Jack to sleep up here. If the one of the kids wakes up, I want someone to hear them or be in here so they don't walk into an empty bed."

Caleigh smiled, getting out of bed. "You're much more relaxed this time."

Zach looked at her. "You're only having one and it's not our first rodeo cowgirl," he grinned back at Caleigh.
