Lelouch was lying down on his queen-sized bed. The thin sheets above him felt more like sweat instead of actual linen, so high was the temperature inside the room. Damn these japanese summer nights.

Even undressing only to his briefs had not done much to alleviate his discomfort. Adding the heat to the fact that C.C. had insisted on getting sheets with teddy bear prints was driving Lelouch to have a breakdown. He hated being made fun of and he knew the witch was trying to get a rise out of him. She kept calling him Teddy bear ever since last week, and seeing how he reacted she kept doing so, much to his annoyance.

Speaking of C.C, where was she even? It was a quarter to two in the morning and she still hadn't come to bed, insisting on having the lights outside of the room turned on. It wasn't news to Lelouch that she didn't have to sleep as much as any mortal, but she still did it more often than not. In fact, in the last few months she went to bed at the same time as him most of the time, not long after she allowed him to use his own bed instead of the floor.

What could she be doing at this hour? Lelouch got up and walked into the living room right out of his room only to find the witch curled up in the couch with a bowl of chocolate ice-cream next to her, eating it spoon by spoon.

"What are you doing?" Lelouch said.

"Can't you see? I am in a fierce battle with this heat."

"And you thought it would be wise to hide the weapons from your commander?"

"My commander can get his weapons from the freezer if he wants to." C.C replied with a smirk.

"He would, but it's empty. A witch made sure to leave it like that."

"Too bad. My poor teddy won't be able to play warlock tonight." C.C grinned, making Lelouch groan. She really knew what buttons to push.

She knew he was suffering in the heat as much as she was, yet she didn't mind telling him about the treat she had kept as secret from him. It somehow hurt his pride a little, as he had thought she had opened up to him a lot more ever since they had faced his father for the last time. She kept her secrets, sure, but not about trivial things. It was unusual. It was also unusual for her to stay up so late.

Sensing that something was up, Lelouch sat on the couch next to her. He studied her face for a few instances and noticed nothing out of order, except that she was avoiding eye contact, pretending there was something more interesting than him in the bottom of a glass bowl. She was avoiding him, there was no denying it. She could fool others with her façade, but not him. He knew her damn too well. They were partners in crime, after all.

"C.C, is something wrong?"

"No… Not really."

"Come on, cut the crap. You are acting strange. What happened? You can tell me."

"Nothing happened, Lelouch. It's just that…" She looked down to her toes, without finishing her sentence.

"Just what?"

"Just forget I said anything." The green haired woman said before getting up, taking her ice cream bowl with her and walking towards their shared room.

That woman sometimes could be a royal pain in the ass, if it was already hard enough to understand her as it is, then when she wanted to she could make it impossible.

"Wait!" Lelouch said, taking hold of her wrist, stopping her. "Look C.C, don't make things harder for me to understand. I'm tired, I want to go to bed because tomorrow I have lots of things to do but first, tell me what's bothering you or else I won't be able to get to sleep with you shuffling around the place."

Lelouch removed his hand from her wrist as she turned to face him, the few moments she looked into his eyes in silence felt more like hours to him. What was on her mind?

"Fine, I'll tell you since you can't resist a secret," she said with a smirk. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you that your mother was alive before. It was wrong of me to do so."

He didn't know how to respond. He just kept facing her, and she went on talking, to fill the uncomfortable silence in the room.

"I didn't know how to bring it up. And besides, I wasn't sure if she even could interact with the real world again. I didn't want to make things harder for you."

Lelouch thought about what she had just said. As much as he wanted to see otherwise, he couldn't stop agreeing with her reasoning. It was a decision he himself would have taken if he were in her situation.

"Did you know about the circumstances of her death?" He asked her.

"No. That I wasn't able to apprehend."

"Then it doesn't matter. You did what had to be done."

"You're not mad with me?"

"Why would I be? Although next time give me a heads up. I am not so weak as to lose my focus, if that is what worried you."

"Right. We are partners after all."

"Until the very end." Lelouch repeated her previous words to her with a smile she gladly returned.

"Now that's solved, let's get to bed. I want to rest." Lelouch said, before walking next to his bed. She followed him for a couple of steps before stopping in her tracks.

"Wait, what about the ice-cream? I can't take it to bed." She said,

"Then give me some of it." As Lelouch approached the bowl to take a scoop he noticed a mischievous grin on C.C's face when it was too late. She had smeared a bit of the treat in her fingertips before rubbing it on the tip of his nose.

He couldn't process what happened for longer than he would like to admit. First, he felt the skin around his nose and lips cool down, then he felt an itch on his chin, where a drop of ice-cream had trickled down to.

"Oh, no, you did not just do that, C.C."

"Oh, but I just did. What are you going to do about it, my little teddy bear?" The green haired woman replied with a cocky but somehow charming and endearing look on her eyes, for whatever reason.

Lelouch slipped his fingers inside the ice-cream bowl and proceeded to rub them slowly across C.C.'s fair cheek, as if challenging her.

"Not much, just making sure my witch looks extra pretty before going to bed."

"But I always look extra pretty. My teddy just forgot how divine the most beautiful woman in the world really is, especially when she is too often around him." She said as she drew a heart shape on Lelouch's cheek with the ice-cream.

Lelouch smiled. When this woman wanted to, she could make him feel out for words to reply to her remarks. Very few people in the world could do that to him, unfortunately, as he quite enjoyed the feeling of engaging in a battle of wits and wordplay with an opponent worthy of his time and intellect.

"So, the beautiful witch is admitting to be in the grasp of my hand?"

"What else could a poor maiden like me do when faced with such a nefarious man?" She smirked.

"We both know you're no fair maiden. What told you I would even like to have you under my control?"

"Your eyes did. Poets say they are the window to the soul, after all."

"Are you sure? Maybe you need a closer look."

"I think so too."

C.C. moved her face closer to Lelouch's face, until their noses were almost touching. He could smell her vanilla shampoo and feel her breathing tickle him.

"They are beautiful." She said,

"Nothing compared to yours, naturally." Lelouch said before closing in the distance between them. Their lips brushed together, her pink lip gloss smearing his lips.

Lelouch placed a hand behind her neck and the other on her waist, and she dropped the ice-cream bowl on the floor. When it hit the floor and bounced with a loud thud.

"Zero, sir, are you alright?" The Black Knights' guard stationed outside the room said as he knocked on the door, fully prepared to break inside if his master was in danger.

Lelouch mentally groaned. The poor man was doing his job properly, which pleased him, but the moment he decided to do so did not. It wasn't like his subordinates didn't know about his relationship with the mysterious witch, some even thought of her as his lover, which was increasingly becoming the truth but still.

He had to reply or else face an unnecessarily awkward situation at this time of the night.

"I am, Hiroshi, there is no need to be alarmed. I just dropped a glass bowl on the floor. You can go back to your duties."

"Very well, sir." The guard replied. When the sound of his steps sounded faint enough, Lelouch turned back his attention to C.C.

She had her gaze on the floor, as she ran her fingers gently through her green hair. He could have sworn that he saw her blushing a little. Maybe he was imagining things. Anyways, he really needed to get some rest before tomorrow.

"I... I must go to bed C.C, really. Go wash up in the bathroom and I'll follow." He told her. C.C. replied with only a nod before going to the bathroom to clean her face.

When Lelouch heard the noise of the faucet stop and the door being open, he took his turn cleaning himself up. When he felt he had taken out all the dirt and grease out of his face, he pat dried it and went to his bedroom.

C.C. was already in between the sheets, resting on her right side. Lelouch lifted the sheets just enough so that he could get under them and lied down on his right side as well, facing her green locks before closing his eyes. He felt something warm and soft rub against his torso. She had moved closer to him so that they were touching one another.

"Good night, Lelouch."

"Good night."

Lelouch wasn't sure if she meant what he thought she meant by doing this. She could only know what she was doing, he concluded. She was a smart woman after all. And he was enjoying it, if had to be honest with himself, despite the summer heat.

He felt too tired to keep thinking about useless things and soon drifted into sleep. By the time he was fast asleep, C.C. was still awake. She slowly turned herself to give him a peck on the forehead, before getting back into position.

"My teddy bear." She said with a smile, before falling asleep herself.
