Veronica Versus The Intersect

In all of her years of spy work, Phoebe Larkin has never faced a mission as risky as this.

She was currently crawling through the air ducts at a top secret government facility. (Don't ask her about how she disabled the security system).

Phoebe finally found an opening where she could see a computer, in a room filled with nothing else. She jumped through the vent, perfectly landing several feet away from the only device in the room.

Or so she thought.

Instantly, lasers beamed across the room, daring any intruder to touch them.

Ok, maybe Phoebe didn't disable the entire security system.

Luckily, she was able to go through the lasers quite effortlessly, twisting her body in all the right places on her way to the computer.

She managed to hack it within minutes and found the file that she was looking for:

TheItchyAndScratchyShow

Phoebe quickly put her hard drive into place, downloading the file onto it, all while looking away from the screen.

Once the download was complete, she removed the hard drive, and was about to move through some more lasers again, until she heard a voice.

"Stop!"

Phoebe turned around and saw that two security guards just entered through the door, guns pointed at her.

She quickly took out her own gun and shot them both down. A security alarm was now blaring throughout the building. Phoebe quickly maneuvered out of the laser beams and started to run towards the roof. There was no way that she could go downstairs now. There were too many security guards.

While running, Phoebe connected the hard drive to her phone, uploading the contents to her phone. Once she got on the roof, she imported the file on an email and was about to hit send when-

"Freeze!"

"Hands up!"

Phoebe slowly put the phone down, held her hands up, and turned around to face those who found her.

It was Lydia Deetz, her protégé in the CIA, and Alexander Hamilton, one of the top NSA agents. AKA one of her worst enemies.

"Phoebe, what's going on? Explain now!" Lydia said.

"Oh come on, don't pretend like you didn't know!" Alexander said.

"Excuse me, have you heard of backstabbing?!" Lydia shot back.

The two then started to bicker before Phoebe pulled her gun out, and just as she was about to shoot first, she got shot instead.

By own her protégé nonetheless.

As Phoebe fell to the ground, her finger was able to hit "Send" on the email.

"No, no, no, no!" Alexander yelled as he went to the phone, but he was too late.

The message had already been sent.

Lydia, horrified by what she just did, heard a beeping sound and looked down at the phone with Alexander.

The phone was about to explode in ten seconds.

They ran to the opposite side of the rooftop, knowing that the phone wouldn't get them there.

This was bad, as the phone could've directed them to where the file was sent.

Luckily for Lydia and Alexander, they were already one step ahead on Plan B.

Because they saw the recipient's email address.

Veronica woke up to the sound of her alarm going off and got ready for the school day. After she got dressed, she checked her email to see if there was anything important. There was nothing really besides the usual store discounts, except for one email in particular.

It came from a person named Phoebe Larkin. The subject line just said "Hey." Veronica opened the email, curious as to what could be inside. There were no words in the actual email, just a file labeled TheItchyAndScratchyShow.

This must be some sort of joke, right? Veronica thought before opening the file, her curiosity getting the best of her. The file first asked for the answer to a complex math equation, which Veronica, being the smart kid that she was, easily answered it. Yep, definitely a joke. She thought

And then her life changed in a flash.

Images of random everyday things started to play, one right after the other, with a hint of what looked like the Matrix system every now and then. Veronica wanted to look away, but she couldn't. It was like her eyes were locked. The images then stopped as soon as it started.

Veronica was left standing completely still, before passing out on the ground.

The sound of an aggressive car horn woke Veronica up a little bit later. Huh? What? Veronica groggily thought to herself, wondering why she passed out on the ground in her school clothes. I was probably too tired from all of my homework last night.

She quickly grabbed her backpack and went outside. JD, her boyfriend, sat impatiently in his black BMW, waiting for her to join him. He was her ride this week because her parents were out of town and she didn't like the bus.

"You're late," JD said as Veronica entered the car.

"Good morning to you, too, Sunshine," Veronica sarcastically remarked.

"I'm sorry, it's just that you're never late."

"I'm sorry too. I don't know what happened. I must've been too exhausted from everything yesterday. I literally woke up like this."

"You've got to stop working yourself so much, Ronnie."

Later, they arrived at the school. As Veronica was getting out of the car, she noticed a man dropping his kid off.

It wouldn't have been so strange to see if her brain didn't send her images of explosives.

It was so weird, because it was like Veronica didn't think those thoughts.

It was like they forced into her head.

"Hey, you coming?" JD asked in front of the school doors.

Veronica just brushed off whatever happened and followed JD inside.

The day continued on like normal, except for there being a new transfer student named Lydia, who just so happened to be in most of Veronica's classes.

At lunchtime, Lydia approached the table where Veronica, JD, and their friend, Martha, were sitting.

"Hi, do you guys mind if I sit here?"

They all agreed to let her sit next to Martha.

After a few minutes of casual conversation, Lydia talked to Veronica about an important topic.

"So you seemed to really know what you were doing in Mr. Wheeler's geometry class earlier."

"Oh really?"

"Yeah. In fact, I think you're so lucky. I struggle with stuff like that all the time."

"Oh, well, I actually do some tutoring at my house sometimes. Maybe you can stop by sometime?"

"That would be great! Thank you!"

"No problem," Veronica then gave Lydia her home address on a piece of paper. "Do you wanna come at let's say, 7?"

"Works for me!"

And just like she said, Lydia was over at Veronica's house at 7:00.

"Come on in," Veronica said, making room for Lydia inside, "Do you want any snacks or anything before we start?"

"Uh, yeah, do you have any Pringles or grape juice?"

"Pringles and grape juice, coming up," Veronica said as she left the room.

Lydia took the opportunity to quickly, but quietly, investigate the upstairs of the house, looking for Veronica's bedroom. She found that obviously belonged to the only teen girl in the house and opened Veronica's laptop, which required a password.

She took an earpiece out from her pocket, and attached it to her ear.

"Hey Jeremy, can you hear me?" She whispered.

"Yeah, is everything ok?"

"Yes, I found her laptop, but I need you to hack it."

"On it."

Several seconds later, the laptop was unlocked and Lydia dug around for any information on the important file.

"Jeremy, I can't find it. How about you?"

"Nothing either."

It was just then that Lydia noticed a familiar figure walking to the front door.

"Uhh, Lyds…"

"On it."

Lydia went back downstairs just as Veronica was leaving the kitchen.

"Sorry for the wait, I couldn't any find any Prin-"

"That's ok, V. In fact, I was just thinking that we should walk to the Olive Garden, through the back door," Lydia said strangely.

Veronica was confused by this. "Lydia, what's go-"

And then a firm knock was heard on the door. Veronica went to get it, before Lydia grabbed her.

"Ronnie, just trust me on this, ok?"

"Open up!" The voice from outside said.

Veronica broke away from Lydia's grasp and opened the door. A Hispanic-looking man entered, closed the door, and pointed a gun at Veronica.

"Now, where is the Intersect?!" Alexander said as Veronica held up her hands.

"The what?!" Veronica replied.

"So much for pleasantries, I guess," Lydia said as she grabbed her gun and pointed it at Veronica too. "Where's the Intersect?!"

"I don't know!"

"Don't lie to us!" Alexander replied. "We know that you communicated with Phoebe Larkin!"

Then the wheels began to click a little in Veronica's brain. "Phoebe Larkin?! I never even heard of her until this morning!"

"This morning?!" Lydia and Alexander asked at the same time.

"Yes! Look, I got a weird email with a file showing all these images at a fast rate! Then, I blacked out!"

Lydia and Alexander looked at each other, an understanding between them.

"It worked," they both said at the same time.

"So you're telling me that I downloaded all of the government's secrets into my head?! And you can't get it out?!" Veronica asked, once she had arrived at Castle, which was basically a secret lair that happened to be right underneath her school.

"Well, I wouldn't say can't. It's more like we haven't found a way yet," Derek Beckham, General of the NSA, said to Veronica.

"But until then, we need you to stay quiet about this," George Graham, General of the CIA added.

Ok, this was definitely a lot to take in.

"How about we introduce you to some of the agents we have here? Obviously, you've already met Ms. Deetz and Mr. Hamilton," General Beckham said, heading towards another room.

Veronica and General Graham followed him to another room, where two nerdy looking boys sat on computers, working on something.

"Ms. Sawyer, this is Jeremy Heere. He is one of the best hackers in the NSA. In fact, he got in by getting his hands on a classified drug," General Beckham said, though most of what he said was directed at General Graham.

"The drug's out of me now," Jeremy awkwardly said to Veronica.

She smiled and nodded at Jeremy, while General Graham went over to the other nerdy looking boy in the room.

"And this here is Evan Hansen, one of the top hackers in the CIA. He was able to convince the whole world that he was best friends with a deceased teenager via fake emails."

"Wait, that was you?" Veronica asked Evan.

"Y-Yeah," he said anxiously, not making any eye contact.

Suddenly, a bell rang on Jeremy's laptop.

"False alarm, everyone. It's just a reminder about General Stanfield's speech," Jeremy said.

Suddenly, images forcefully flew into Veronica's head again. She saw pictures of General Stanfield in battle, and the arena he was giving his speech in.

An arena that was several minutes away from where they were.

It was then that the puzzle pieces fell into place.

"Somebody is going to explode the arena," Veronica said.

"What?!" Everybody else said.

"This is going to sound crazy, but the uh, Intersect, just told me that a demolitions expert is going to explode the arena when the General gives his speech tonight."

"Wow, the Intersect really is a beautiful thing," General Beckham said, admiring the program.

"I'll send my best agent out. Mr. Hansen, you can connect to Mr. Hamilton's intercom like always," General Graham said.

"Oh yeah? Well, I'll send my best agent out. Mr. Heere, connect yourself with Ms. Deetz."

While the two boys got to work, General Beckham spoke to Veronica.

"We're going to need you out there as well."

"What?! Why?!"

"We wouldn't have this information without the Intersect. You need to go there in case there's anything we need to know about."

Veronica, Lydia, and Alexander were all dressed up as servers when they entered the maintenance hallway with the bomb in it (thank the Intersect)!

A bomb that showed the building was about to explode in two minutes.

"Wait, that's a Prism Express laptop! I think I know how to defuse it!" Jeremy said in Lydia's earpiece.

"How?"

"Tell Veronica to type in this code."

Lydia relayed the long code to Veronica, who typed it in. A black screen popped up.

"Alex, tell Veronica to type in this code," Evan said.

And just like Lydia, Alexander relayed another long code to Veronica, who typed it in. This time a Firefox window opened.

"Tell her to type in Miley Cyrus!" Evan and Jeremy shouted at the same time.

"What?!" Alexander said, while Lydia relayed the instructions to Veronica.

She typed in the code, and clicked on the first link that popped up.

All of a sudden, videos of Miley Cyrus started to play in the auditorium where the speech was happening.

Meanwhile, the laptop made a few sparks, causing the team to back up, before ultimately shutting down.

"Did we just stop a bomb?" Veronica asked in disbelief.

"We sure did," Alexander happily told her.

Veronica won't lie. She'll happily get the Intersect out of her head the second she is able to. But as crazy as this day was, she did like that feeling of pride that came with being a hero.

The next day, Veronica went to 7/11, where she saw a familiar boy working behind the counter.

"Hi Evan," she said.

"Oh, hi," he replied. "Um, your boyfriend's not here at the moment."

"I know," Veronica responded. "I came to talk to you."

"Me?" Evan asked, to which Veronica nodded.

"About spy life," she said before sighing, "There's nowhere I can run, right?"

"Not from us," Evan said, noticing how disappointed Veronica was.

"Just last week, I got worried when my computer wouldn't start. Now, I have one in my brain," Veronica paused before continuing. "And I can't figure out why this Phoebe person did it. Why did she choose me?"

"I wish I knew, but maybe there's something that she left behind."

There was a moment of silence between them, before Veronica spoke up again.

"What happens now?"

"For now, you go back to your own life. The CIA and NSA have reached a temporary truce in regards to the Intersect. In other words, Lydia, Jeremy, Alex and I will protect you while you work with us."

"What about JD? My friends? My family? Are they in danger?"

"In order to keep them safe, you can't tell them anything," Evan said, looking Veronica dead in the eyes.

Just as Veronica was about to leave, Evan grabbed her attention.

"Hey, Veronica?"

"Yeah?"

"I need you to do one more thing for me."

"What is it?"

"You need to trust me."

"Ok," Veronica replied, before she saw the ring on his finger. She had a flash, where she saw him murdering several people in a single setting.

Maybe she couldn't trust him after all.

A/N: And that's the end of the first chapter in the series! WHOOP! WHOOP!
