A/N: This takes place in an alternate universe and obviously things needed to move around for the story to make sense. I just felt like writing something as it has been years since I have and I thought a fun adventure story would be cool to try. I was also inspired by the Hunger Games, if that's not obvious. I never read the books but I've seen the movies and I liked some of their concepts. I was also inspired historically by the Greeks and how their society worked. So all credit to those who came before me! And please no complaining that there are similarities because duh of course there will be some. I'm also kind of winging it so I'm open to suggestions of things someone would like to see. One Last warning: There will be a lot of exposition. I've never written any action sequence so this will be interesting. Other than that, enjoy.

The Beginning

This was it. Bulla couldn't believe she was in this situation. Her chest felt tight and her head was spinning. There was no backing out now and she knew she was the reason why. It was her choice. Her family would have never dreamt of her entering the tournament. She was never meant to enter, people like her were lucky enough to avoid it altogether. But Bulla felt like she had something to prove.

Unfortunately, she was already at a disadvantage. Most of the men and women competing had an alliance, a partner to enter the tournament with if not larger groups. They train for years before entering or being forced to participate. Bulla was strong and she had been secretly training for this very moment. She knew that it wasn't pure brawns that would determine the outcome. She knew she could easily outsmart the average person but working alone did pose problems. She had no one to trust but herself.

As she stood waiting for the countdown she wondered if she had made a big mistake.

It was dusk and Bulla had been training for over two hours. She needed to make sure she was strong enough for the tournament. Being only a demi-Saiyan meant she would have to work harder than most. The day was fast approaching and this would be her only chance to enter before becoming ineligible. Females were only allowed entry until their 18th birthday and after that they were banned. Men had an easier go of it, they were eligible up until they were 25.

Her older brother Trunks had entered the tournament when he was 16 and won the top spot. Regardless of his elite status, it was expected of him to enter since he was a demi-Saiyan. While they were no longer royalty they still held elite spots in the royal palace. This was due, in part because their father Vegeta traveling to Earth and choosing an earthling as a partner. Bulla's Grandfather King Vegeta was not too pleased with his son's choice and made him renounce his title.

Vegeta was prideful but the intellectual earthling was like no one he had ever met so he chose to make a life with her. He moved out of the palace and lived among the elite-warriors. It clearly wasn't something he was used to but they still allotted him ample respect because they knew of his temper. Soon enough Trunks and Bulla were born and both showed potential. Vegeta was quick to begin Trunks' training knowing nothing of how a half-Saiyan's strength could compare. He was very impressed. Bulla was also taught how to fight but she was never expected to be quite strong due to her being a female and her mother not wanting her daughter getting into any battle.

It was only after Trunks showed significant strength in combat at a very young age that King Vegeta felt remorseful for pushing his son away and invited him to stay in the Palace. Trunks may have only been a demi-Saiyan but his skills in fighting were exceptional.

Every four years there is a tournament to find a single male and female victor which, up to this point has never happened. In reality there is only one victor because most females don't make it to the end. Many alliances have crumbled and people are quick to turn on one another. What more could you expect from the lower classes?

Elite Saiyan's have no need to enter the tournament their rank is set and they are already enjoying their lives. All other classes either willingly enter or are forced to participate. That's not to say some of the elite don't participate. Even Prince Vegeta entered the tournament in his youth demolishing his competition. Trunks entered the tournament as a way to prove that even though he was a halfling he was a better warrior than those full blooded Saiyan's.

Bulla wasn't allowed to watch her brother's journey through the tournament as she was 10 at the time. She only heard tales of his heroic feat and since then she knew she wanted in on the action. From then on she began secretly training. She had a burning need to be the first female victor. She would have some sparring sessions with her brother and he was impressed with her skills. He had no idea he was helping her prepare for the tournament. He would have not been training with her had he known.

The palace was quiet and Bulla smiled waving at the guards who let her through. She felt confident and was sure of her choice. Today was the day she would enter the tournament. Her brother was lingering in the hallway looking like he had just woken up. He cocked an eyebrow, "What are you doing up so early?" she smiled, "I was just out for a quick workout, that's all"

"You know mom doesn't like you being out there alone" he reminded her, "Yeah, well it's not like I'm some delicate flower I can protect myself" Trunks laughed it was true Bulla would put up one hell of a fight if someone dared to attack her, "Alright, well because I'm your favorite brother I won't tell her." Now it was Bulla's turn to laugh, "Thank you, I'm going to get ready for the big announcement today" she stated walking towards her bedroom.

Trunks let out a sigh, today was the day they found out who would be in the Tournament. He remembered back when he entered, that was over eight years ago. Time sure went by quick but it wasn't something he ever wanted to do again. Trunks still had trouble sleeping from the things he saw when he was out there. All the glory was nice but he never talked about his actual experience on the field. The hopeless screams and running blood... He shook his head not wanting to think any more of it. Soon the day would be over and he wouldn't have to think about it again for another four years.

The gathering in the Capital City was huge! Bulla's eyes twinkled as she stared out over the palace walls Trunks was quick to pull her along to take their place behind their parents, his sister was always amazed by the big displays. They made their way out of the Palace and watched as people began kneeling in the presence of their Grandfather who had a pleasant look on his face. He began speaking of the grand Tournament and the previous victors. The crowd continued cheering when the victor from four years ago was recognized. The man barely resembling the boy he was when he had entered four years earlier. Winning had done him well.

Bulla felt herself fidgeting, she knew her Grandfather was getting closer to asking if any of the elite warriors would join in on the tournament this year. Trunks shot her a questionable look and she stopped fidgeting not wanting to let anyone know what she was about to do.

King Vegeta went on to welcomed all new entries for young warriors and went over the simple requirements to join the tournament. He gave a deadline of a week to enter and to have them make their way to the Capital where they would be vetted for the upcoming tournament and have bets placed on how far one would make it.

"At last, with great pleasure I inquire to see who among us elite are willing to enter the tournament this year?" He eyes roamed over the crowd as hand shot up and names were spoken. He smiled, only a true Saiyan would have the strong urge to be the best and this was the only time they were able to fight one another. Sanctioned violence, it was truly a great nation. Names were taken and everyone who had signed up were entered into the bracket of names on the official game board.

"Now that if that is all who want to join I now offici-" King Vegeta was cut off by a voice coming from behind him, "Wait!" Bulla yelled feeling all eyes turn on her. Trunks was confused as to what was going on, why was she telling him to stop?

Bulla felt like she had something stuck in her throat but this is what she was waiting for, "I am entering the tournament!" She said with full conviction. There was a gasp emerging from the crowd. Her parents looked shocked and Trunks couldn't believe what he had just heard. King Vegeta nodded his head, she was a warrior and had every right to join. He even felt proud of her bravery.

"At your request, you have been entered. Now, if there are no more volunteers from this sector. I officially announce that the 855 Vegetasei Games have begun!" He announced with the cheers growing louder. Within the next week many of the other competitors will be arriving to the capital and that is what will determine if his Granddaughter has a real shot at the title.

Bulla smiled she had done it but one look at her family and she knew she was in trouble. She heard a ding and that moment her name appeared on the board and she knew it was a done deal. There was no turning back now and there was no way of getting out of it. She would win, she had to.

Living on Planet Vegeta wasn't all that bad, there were benefits like ample people to fight. Goku had uplifted his family much to Chichi's chagrin back when Gohan was a kid. Goku had first heard of planet Vegeta through his older brother that he hadn't known even existed until he visited him on earth. Things went sour with the whole dying thing but Goku still forgave his brother. Goku then met Vegeta way back when he was trying to conquer earth in search of the Dragonballs. Goku had taken a straight liking to him as a worthy and difficult opponent and wanted to know more about the planet he came from.

With Bulma pairing up with Vegeta, it gave Goku the opportunity to go and visit the planet. Short to say that he did enjoy being there and to his surprise he had a nephew. Raditz had a son that was still in a birthing pod. From what Goku could see Daikon looked a lot like his Father. Goku was determined to help him out anyway he could feeling bad that his father's death was due to him. Daikon's mother was no where around. All he knew about her is that she was off on a mission and didn't know when or if she would return.

Even though Goku had decided to make a life on Planet Vegeta he refused to join any of the missions to take over other planets as he thought it was wrong. His closeness with Prince Vegeta's wife assured that he wouldn't have any problems not following the conventional rules. Goku had also decided to live among what was considered the low-levels on the planet that were often mistreated. He knew that there had to be untapped potential among them that was being ignored solely based on rank and not raw talent.

Many of the other Saiyan's that lived in the lower class area found Goku to be strange and as a result they tried to stay away from him. Goku didn't mind as he tried to make friends with everyone. They eventually came to accept him because of his strength and the fact that he was open to help train new fighters. Goku was a great teacher and had very successful students who were able to rank up and leave that area for new opportunities.

Chichi made due with living in the new civilization making frequent visits with Bulma, a regular thing while her son would run around with his father. After having Goten she was worried what living on this planet could do to him. She was very pleased to see that Goten was just as kind and caring as Goku and that the other kids didn't have too much of an impact on him. He had a hard time with other kids wanting to fight him all the time but they eventually backed off because they wanted his dad to train them as they aged. Chichi also tried her best to take care of Raditz's child Daikon when Goku had brought him home after news of his mother's passing. Daikon was nothing like her children he was headstrong and at times uncaring. He was a few years older than Goten but the two grew up together. Daikon couldn't wait until he was old enough to go out on missions and invade planets. He lived for the fighting and was a very strong always striving to be the best. While Goten and Daikon would train together Goten always thought of it as a game which always seemed to make Daikon angrier.

When Gohan had turned 16 he longed for his earth life. He had been in contact with Piccolo and wanted to do high school like any normal earthling. It was hard for Chichi to let him go but she decided it was for the best. With her blessing Gohan traveled back to earth for a few years. He ended up meeting the love of his life. His high school sweetheart Videl Satan. She was stronger than most earth girls and took to Gohan's news about his family living on another planet surprisingly well. They ended up moving to the planet after visiting his parents for a earthling holiday. Videl could see how much Gohan missed his parents and brother so it was her idea to uproot their lives there. Soon enough they had started their own little family. Gohan was a proud father of a little girl named Pan. She was even less of a Saiyan than he was only being a quarter but she was still just as strong as the other kids. She even picked up flying before she could walk.

Every Four years when the tournament would come up Goku would lament over how unfair it was that he wasn't able to participate due to age restrictions. He was always reminded that part of the price that one pays for winning the tournament is the death of others. Of course Goku would reply that he wouldn't need to kill anyone to win just beat them in battle. Everyone would laugh at Goku's answer but he knew that killing an opponent wasn't the only way of getting them to give up. That was the problem with most Saiyans, they always thought that violence and death was the answer.

This year both Goku and Gohan would miss out on watching the tournament live due to their traveling to another planet for training purposes. Goten was going to join them but that would have meant leaving his mother, Videl, and Pan alone so he decided against it. Plus, someone had to stay and put in their work with their training school.

Goten waited at the outfield waiting for Pan to show up. She was normally early for their training session but this morning she was no where to be seen. He wasn't too far from the village and he could hear the commotion as he sat down on the field trying to focus on the energy on the planet. Today was the day that some elite Saiyans would arrive into town to announce the opening of the tournament. Goten would rather keep clear from the commotion he just wanted to get through the day with no surprises. He felt resentful towards the tournament that took place every four years. He'd lost friends who either willingly enter or were forced to participate.

Goten was snapped out of his thoughts when he felt a familiar energy. It was Pan. She had to be in the main square where the announcement would happen. He stood up ready to head over. She was always curious about the tournament but no one spoke about it with her. Maybe that was a mistake. Goten didn't think she'd volunteer herself but that kid had a way of attracting trouble. He'd have to find her before that happened. He wouldn't hear the end of it from his mother or Videl if they realized that she was watching the announcement.

Pan squealed with delight as she made her way through the streets of Oaken village. There were a lot of people out ready to celebrate the arrival of their representative from the capitol. Today was the day that many warriors would enter the tournament and she was determined to watch it. Four years ago she was told she was too young to watch the battle but now she was thirteen. Not to mention both her Father and Grandfather were away so it would be easier to sneak away from home to watch. She would never be allowed to watch the games in her own household. Her parents didn't support what they called the "pointless bloodshed" that occurred.

All of Pan's friends were able to watch and they frequently talked of how they planned to enter one day. Pan didn't think her parents would ever allow her to enter despite her strength. They always worried about her especially as she aged. Pan wouldn't admit it but she sure did attract trouble. Pan spotted a few of her friends as she continued walking towards the main square of the village where young men and women would volunteer or be chosen to enter.

That may have been the only major downside to living in the lower-class sections when it came to the tournament. They were the expendable Saiyans that made the tournament a must see. It wasn't often but once in a blue moon a low class Saiyan would win and with that came a life of luxury for them and their immediate family. However, this was a very rare occurrence and due to that there was always low participation from this sector of the planet. To solve this conundrum men and women ages 10 to 18/25 were drawn at random to round out the amount of people entering.

Pan knew she was fine because her family was specifically excluded from being drawn. They would only enter the competition if they chose to join. The perks of being close to the Royal family although Pan had never really met them. She finally made it to the main square where everyone was gathered. She could deduce just by looking at them that some of them were afraid while others were barley standing still ready to throw themselves in. That's when she spotted her Uncle Daikon. He was standing not too far from her with an unpleasant look on his face. He had just come back from a mission and nearly blew up their home after her Grandmother told him to watch his attitude.

Daikon felt a familiar energy in the crowd. It didn't take him long to see it was his niece, Pan. He walked over to her curious as to why she would even be there. This was a place for true warriors not children. Especially a child that was more earthling than Saiyan.

"What are you doing here? Not thinking of volunteering are you?" He teased as she glared up at him, "I don't see why that's any of your business." she spat back at him turning away. Daikon felt his rage flare as he grabbed onto the girls arm tightly. How dare she speak to him like that. He was her elder and her uncle for that matter. She let out a painful yelp feeling him practically crushing her forearm, "What was that again?" He asked.

"Let go of me" she whined trying to pry her arm free. Daikon smirked, "Say please" he used a threatening tone when he felt himself being pulled back letting go of the girl to try and land a punch on the person that dare interfere.

"That's enough of that Daikon" Goten dodged the punch watching Pan's face light up. Daikon shrugged it off, "Oh it's the boring one. What brings the likes of you here? You going to try out the tournament? Not that I expect someone like you to enter. You wouldn't hurt a fly just like your weak father." He disapproved of the peace loving talks his Uncle always gave. He would always get a ton of shit from his fellow Saiyans when ever he went out on missions with them because of it.

Goten smiled, Daikon was always trying to get under his skin but they both knew the truth. Goku was one of the strongest, if not the strongest man in the universe. Goten didn't need to defend his father. He didn't bother replying to Daikon and turned his attention to Pan, "I'm actually here because I was look for you. You know you were supposed to meet me for a training session right?" Pan's face turned red, she had snuck out early that morning to get the first look at the amount of people entering the tournament from the elite level.

"Uhh, I'm sorry I forgot. I went out this morning because last night mom asked me to pick up some supplies for breakfast this morning" She was thinking on her feet and she clearly wasn't the best liar.

"Alright, alright, just don't forget about tomorrow" Goten put his arms behind his head, he'd let Pan get away with it this time. He remembered what it was like being a kid. Daikon looked at his cousin like he was an idiot, no, he was sure he was an idiot.

"Come on we should get out of here," Goten suggested turning away from the crowd, "No, Uncle Goten I want to stay and watch. Please just this one time? I promise I won't tell anyone that you let me stay" Pan pleaded. Goten knew that neither of her parents would approve but maybe if she saw what this was like then she would understand that this tournament was no joke. He let out a sigh not sure if it was the right choice but he had a soft spot for his niece, "Alright, we can stay but not for that long. Your Mom expects you home for lunch and when she asks you what you did today you say you trained with me."

Pan had a wide smile on her face, "Thank you! You are the best! I will work twice as hard in our next training session, you'll see!" Daikon rolled his eyes. He still couldn't believe he shared a bloodline with the likes of them. He turned to face where the Elite Saiyans were entering. Daikon was irritated that his Uncle had decided to settle among the weak low-class Saiyans. He could have been in a better position had he used his brain and moved them into the Elite circle.

Paragus a high ranking Saiyan warrior stepped forward as the crowd began to settle in. He was was irritated that he was always stuck with visiting this village. Couldn't they have sent someone lower in rank than him? He was a highly trained General and this is what he got stuck with. Part of him was sure King Vegeta did it to remind him of his position.

He looked over the list of the chosen participants. His eyes stopped on a name he had never seen before, what was this person doing on the list? He shrugged. If they were on the list then that was it.

"Good morning and Welcome to the opening registration of the 855th Vegetasei Games. While we all are gunning to volunteer I must take the moment first to announce the chosen participants for this year." He paused as the other elite Saiyans got into position ready to wrangle the chosen. There was tension in the air as they awaited to hear if they were one of the chosen.

Paragus started calling out names and one by one the chosen was taken and fitted with special devices so they wouldn't escape before the tournament. Pan felt unsure watching the reactions coming from the people chosen. She could tell some were afraid but tried their best not to show it. She came to the realization that she was wrong. There was nothing to be excited about. Pan tugged on Goten's arm signaling she wanted to go. Goten looked at her and nodded his head. He felt relieved that Pan had come to her senses.

"The last of those chosen to participate this year are as follows: Abacado, Escarle, Cellary, Kalila, Beets, Oakra, and...Pan Son!"

Goten froze in his tracks. That couldn't be right...
