I do not own Game of Thrones

Jaime Lannister PoV

How long had it been since he was last proud of being a knight ordained by the seven? Being knighted by the sword of the morning himself was the highlight of his life. How naive was he to be so excited to be a kingsguard? Indeed, there could be no greater honor than to protect the bedroom of the king as he rapes his wife after burning people alive! He was growing more and more sarcastic lately, he wondered if his little brother would be proud of him. Perhaps his family should organize a mocking tournament so that he and his brother can get a one-two finish. Wasn't there a family with the mockingbird sigil? It was in the Vale if he wasn't wrong? Come to think of it, does mockingbird ever even mock anyone?

His thought process running wild while he was both a guard and a hostage was driving him mad. Speaking of mad, he wondered how the lord of Winterfell was doing. He was there in the throne room when the atrocity was happening and everyone was watching silently. He did not think about how this would effect their remaining family as he was too busy trying not to puke. There was something distinctly different about killing someone in a fight and a torturous execution. Even if his opponent was an amateur so that the possibility to kill him was almost negligible, it still completely erased his guilt. If it was his father burning and his brother tied at neck ... actually Tyrion would likely just sit back and enjoy the view.

From what Varys had informed the king, the madlord had killed his own best friend by burning down a town. Normally this would break the rebellion into pieces, except Robert was already injured before he entered the town so even for those who know, the ambiguity of whether or not he was already dead is keeping them together for now. News traveled very slowly in across the kingdoms if excluding the spy networks. Lords of Stormlands and Vale still don't know about the incident while Riverlords have a gag order. Northern lords are fanatically faithful for some reason, it may be that they are resonating with this madness. If the king could slow things down, he was guaranteed to win but his paranoia won't let him.

Varys likely considered using the information to break the rebellion but even suggesting contacting rebels for any reason would put him on a pyre. The problem is that things are progressing too fast. His father taught him that the loser is not annihilated in any battle normally. They regroup and hole up in their castles like rats and if you fail to exterminate them, then they multiply again. It results in long and boring sieges but going in that lair will get you bitten. You might win but only with severe wounds. Maddard's actions meant that the core of loyalist army was annihilated while Dornish forces were yet to even exit their passes and Reach forces were in front of Storms End. And there was still no hide nor hair of the crown prince Rhaegar, supposedly busy doing whatever he was with that Lyanna girl.

Speaking of which, he just now heard that his father was at the gates, somehow. Not loyalist army or rebel army, his father. He would praise his father for speed if nothing else. Finally it was coming to an end. His father would likely betray the king and he would be executed for it instead. That was fine. He did not even sleep with Cersei since becoming kingsguard. He had maintained his oaths until now and he wasn't going to break them no matter what.

He broke them. It was so easy. Oaths are so fragile and contradictory. After stabbing mad king in the back and slitting his throat for good measure, he was now sitting on the ugly throne and cleaning his blade of the blood.

His father betrayed the king and sacked the city as expected. What was unexpected was that instead of killing him, he was ordered to bring his fathers head. He was fine with that. He pictured going and facing the Mountain, then getting tired and subdued by the Lannister forces. He would fail even if he tried his best so he would be neither a kinslayer, nor an oath-breaker. Then the wildfire thing had come up and his mind went blank.

The door to the throne room opened and Jaime looked up, not expecting to see Mad Stark instead of his father. He had just killed a madman and wondered if he will have to repeat the performance. He couldn't though as Stark was followed by other rebel lords. He considered explaining himself but his inherent Lannister cockiness won't let him. What right does anyone have to judge him? Why does he have to explain himself?

"Lord Stark ... " Jaime said with a smirk.

"Your grace." Ned calmly nodded making him freeze. Was Aerys alive? Did he turn into a dragon like he wanted to? Or was it a trick from the Stark to distract him and stab him in the back (like he did,a part of his mind supplied)? After visually confirming that Aerys was still dead in the same place, he glared.

"There is no king here, unless you intend to be one."

"Aren't you the king? You are sitting on the throne and your forces are sweeping the capital city?" Ned asked with a child like curiosity. Jaime froze a second time. Was this man serious?

"Yes, I am the king. Its only natural for kingslayer to be king." Jaime sarcastically said. His pride still wouldn't allow him to explain himself. This was still better than his honor being denied because of his latest actions.

"Congratulations." Ned said as if enlightened and simply left.

After that Ned seemingly announced that Jaime was the new king and that from now on, only kingslayer will be king. Tywin had no way to reverse it and not be seen as a usurper to his own son. Tywin was happy to see his family name on the throne but he knew how Jaime's education was lacking despite doing his best or how much of a bad precedent this had set. Jaime decided that he would not hold back his desires anymore as everyone was bowing and scraping before him.

As king, Jaime first ordered Tywin and the Lannister army away towards Storms End to earn some goodwill. It would help in capital where Lannisters were hated and also with Baratheons who would be released from the siege.

He later announced his betrothal and later marriage to Cersei after his father had left. He knew it was stupid but he was done watching his sister mooning over Rhaegar. Now even if the marriage did not happen because of their father, any potential candidate for her hand will check her for chastity after this so she could not get married easily. He had sacrificed his life for her, now it was her turn to make a choice.

He also beheaded Varys and Pycelle for good measure. He did not know if it was the right decision or not but he always wanted to do that. He wondered if he was infected by the Stark's madness.

Over the next week, he faced a dozen attempts at his life. People had taken 'kingslayer will be king' quite seriously. Some were upfront, others were assassins. Some were likely just religious fanatics provoked by his open incest declaration. He refused any bodyguards and won all the fights but received minor wounds.

In the end he decided to make it more organized and turn dragon pits into fighting pits. He would only accept challenges from winners once a week. He lasted for several months before losing.

Even then as he lay dying, he had a smile on his face. This was the best period in his life, even better than sleeping with Cersei. This is what he always wanted, to live and die by the blade and no complications.

His last thought was of the man who defeated him and became the next king. He was a nobody from the great wall named Mance Rayder.

About the last chapter, the biggest regret of Jon Connington's life was that he did not burn the town of Stoney Sept. He would do it in a instant if he could go back in time. So how mad did he go in exile? That will be a good measure of Maddard.

Robert was injured so there are no witnesses to confirm if it was really Ned who killed him for sure. News travels slowly which was not a problem in the original rebellion but here things are happening a lot faster. When Ned arrived at Storms End in canon, Tyrells had not heard of the sack of capital but only the battle of trident.

Maddard is not a strategic genius, he is only focused on what's in front of him which is ending the war and reaching Lyanna as soon as possible. If the alliance lasts as long as that, then he doesn't care that Storm Lords and maybe even Vale Lords will turn on him later. In short, it indeed was a stupid decision which worked in the short term but not in the long term.

The dream is of little relevance as it wasn't clear on the details to him either.
