Chapter 2 - Save Me

The day of school had arrived and Sugar was dressed up in a cheetah print shirt along with a fluffy cropped vest, black shirt and boots. She knew how important impressions were on the first day, so making a statement was the only thing on her mind. She sat downstairs at the kitchen island watching Santana, dressed in a black housecoat, cook up some eggs on the frying pan.

Brittany was racing down the stairs, quickly grabbing a piece of toast out of the toaster. "Love you, bye!" She gave Santana a quick kiss and bolted out of the house.

"Why's momma leaving so early, and in such a rush?" Sugar asked her mami.

"Because," Santana's eyes glued to the frying pan attempting to flip the eggs. "Apparently she had to take over a morning aerobics class for some old people or something like that. She had to open up the studio for them, I dunno."

Sugar threw her bag on the chair next to her and walked up to grab a plate.

"Here." Santana threw some eggs on a plate with toast. "Eat up, Beth's gonna be here any moment."

Sugar started eating her breakfast as Santana held onto her coffee mug. "I can't believe you're going back to McKinley. That's where me and your momma met, you know. Lots of really messed up shit happened there, but also a lot of good times. I think it's gonna be weird but I think you're gonna have fun."

Sugar nodded at her mami with a mouthful of food. After a moment the doorbell rang. Santana walked over to get it while Sugar kept eating.

"Haha, hey Beth! Long time no see!" Santana opened the door with a hearty laugh. Beth was dressed in a Cheerios uniform. She had a golden necklace with a star and microphone charm. Probably from her other mother.

"Hey Auntie S!" Beth was oddly chipper at this time in the morning.

"Why don't you come in, Sugar's just finishing up her breakfast."

Sugar looked over at Beth and looked her up and down. She's never seen someone dress up in a cheerleader outfit to school before. Is this a Lima thing? She'd seen pictures of her parents dressed in the same attire from years ago.

"Hey Sugar, it's been a while hey?" Beth sat down at the island looking directly at Sugar, who was more focused on her plate than the girl in front of her.

"Yeah." Sugar said while munching her food. She tried to smile through the chewing, avoiding eye contact. She wasn't really sure what to say to someone she hasn't seen in years.

Santana couldn't bear the awkward reunion. "Hey, 7:45, you kids better get out of here."

Sugar wolfed the last piece of her toast in her mouth and walked over to her mami to give her a hug.

"Hey," Santana whispered to her daughter. "I know high school is such a bitch, trust me, I lived through that hot garbage of a place. But it's not that bad, and I know a lot of the staff there. You're going to meet a lot of people. Try joining the Cheerios or glee club or something, just get out there and make some friends."

"I know mami, it's just I'm so nervous." Sugar looked down at her hands fidgeting.

Santana took a moment to pause. "Who is the most beautiful girl in this entire world?" Santana looked right into Sugar's eyes.

"Momma." Sugar said.

"That's right, but who is second?" Santana was so pleased with her daughter.

"Me."

"That's right. Now you go be that bitch, you own the school, and kick ass. Don't be afraid to go all Lima Heights on their asses."

Sugar smiled reassuringly and walked out the door with Beth.

"See you later Auntie S!" Beth said while shutting the door.

Santana's relationship with her daughter was interesting. She wasn't nearly as nurturing with her as Brittany was, but would do anything to protect her family. She tried to teach Sugar hard lessons as she learned growing up, but it was obviously different with the environment. Her and Brittany tried their hardest to make sure life growing up was good for Sugar. Santana would do anything to ensure Sugar was safe but also knew she could handle herself well. She had her momma's silliness but her mami's sass.

Sugar and Beth made it to school minutes before the first period bell rang. They found out they had science and math together. On the way to school their conversation drifted around boys, who's popular and who's not, how both of them have two moms, and lastly clubs.

"Are you thinking of joining Cheerios?" Beth asked eagerly.

"I dunno if that's really my thing, I mean, my moms brought me to cheer camp for a couple years but I think that was more on their interests than mine." Sugar stated plainly.

"What about Glee club?" Beth chimed in quickly.

"Are you in every club your parents run? Isn't that a little weird?"

"Not at all, if I want to be the best, I have to do whatever it takes, even if it means a little nepotism." Beth winked at Sugar with a devilish smirk. She was everything her mami warned her about. She really was a Berry-Fabray.

"Well, maybe I'd consider that. My mom worked with yours on Broadway, right?" Sugar remembered stories her mami would tell her about her prime Broadway days.

"Yep that's right! With sectionals coming up fast we need lots of star power." Beth had her recruitment speech ready to go, but was cut off by Sugar.

"I'll consider it, give me some time to think about it."

Sugar was lost in a sea of new faces, meandering through each class and half paying attention to everything happening around her. She thought about her future relationship with Beth. She wasn't sure if they were completely compatible, but she was nice to her and all Sugar really needed right now was some kind of connection.

"Hey Sugar, are you coming to Glee club tonight? It's the first meeting and we need some new voices!" Beth looked very determined.

"I guess I'll go. But if this sucks ass, I'm leaving."

Beth gave Sugar a look, one eyebrow arched.

"Sorry. Aspergers." Did I really just say that?

When Sugar entered the room she saw a bright-eyed Rachel Berry standing in front of a small group of other students.

"Good afternoon everyone, as our first official glee club meeting of the year commences, I'd like to start the year with a fun assignment this week. To introduce yourselves, I'd like each of you to think of a Broadway song that best introduces yourself."

Beth looked around the room before clearing her throat and raising her hand.

"Beth, sweetheart? Would you like to start?" Rachel piped up. It felt like a scene which was planned months in advance, set up for this exact moment.

Beth stands up and bursts into the most theatrical rendition of Funny Girl's "I'm the Greatest star" and it was actually entertaining. Sugar swayed to the music and took it all in. Hey, this could actually be fun… she thought to herself.

Some of the other more experienced glee members volunteered to sing songs, one couple decided to do a duet, "I got you babe" by Sonny and Cher, causing Sugar to cringe throughout the entirety of the song.

After the glee club meeting Beth ran off with some other friends she knew and was catching up with them. Sugar got up, and right before she left she turned around and saw a girl with dark clothing on. The style was casual yet donned ornate jewelry pieces, something she could describe as casual goth. It was different than what everyone else was wearing, and definitely more unique than a Cheerios uniform. Hmm, how come I didn't notice her earlier? Sugar thought.

She walked over to the girl and introduced herself. "Hey there, I'm Sugar. Sugar Pierce-Lopez." Sugar reached out her hand.

"Ruby. Ruby Cohen-Chang." She looked up at Sugar shyly.

Sugar let out a soft chuckle. "Wow, we both got the double last name thing going on."

"Yeah, we do." Ruby softly smiled at Sugar. This was going nowhere.

Sugar tried hard to keep her interested. "You live close by? I was wondering if you were doing anything after this, or maybe we could walk home—"

Before Sugar could even finish her sentence Ruby got up in an almost panic. "I gotta go, see ya."

Sugar turned her head in confusion as she watched Ruby bolt out of the classroom, almost running. "Okay, that was weird." Sugar picked up her bag and headed out of the classroom. "Guess I'll walk by myself" She said out loud.

As she slowly walked down the dark empty school hallways she suddenly heard a scream. "Help! Somebody help me!" Sugar quickened her pace as she tried to see where the sound was coming from. "Please! Somebody!"

Sugar started running as fast as she could down the hallway with the sound of the cries getting louder and louder. She busted open the doors of a random classroom to see Beth tied up to a chair surrounded by a group of dark hooded figures, two men and a woman. They were pale and had ugly faces, long, pointed canine teeth and a cold aura. Everything about them screamed vampire. The woman turned around to meet Sugar's timid eyes.

"Well," The woman looked pleased. "Looks like we found ourselves some dessert too!"

"Don't even think about touching her!" Yelled Sugar. She was channeling her inner Auntie Snixx her mami taught her.

"Or what?" The woman jeered.

"Or… I'll beat you up all Lima Heights style!" Sugar stammered.

"We'll see about that. Boys, get her!" The woman lifted her hands as if starting a race and the two men came charging at Sugar at full force.

Sugar's adrenaline kicked in and she threw a punch at one of the men, sending him flying through the air. Whoa… Where did I get this kind of strength from? Sugar kicked the other man, sending him across the floor, hitting his head and knocking him out. The other man she punched charged again, and this time she wanted to see what she could do. Grabbing the nearest chair, she picked it up and slammed it on top of his head just as he came into range of her. Pieces of the chair shattered and wooden shards went flying. She picked up one of the pieces of wood and held it in her hands so naturally. Where have I seen this before? Those nightmares? Sugar followed her instinct and stabbed the man, and he fell into dust. Oh my god! Sugar couldn't believe what had happened.

The woman was stunned and shocked at what she just saw. She ran over to the man on the floor and smacked him. "We have to get out of here, now!" She picked up the man and jumped out of the window of the library faster than Sugar could even blink.

Sugar froze there, still in shock of what she had just done.

Sugar untied Beth, and when she was freed she lunged into Sugar and wrapped her arms around her in the tightest embrace humanly possible. "Oh Sugar, I thought I was done for! Thank you!"

Sugar, still in shock, barely choked up a reply. "Y-you're welcome… I guess?" She dropped the wooden stake in her hands and the noise echoed throughout the library.

"C'mon, let's get out of here!" Beth said, gripping onto Sugar's arm and leading her out of the library.

Sugar dropped Beth off at her house and ran down the block to get home. She took a moment to take a deep breath before unlocking the front door and going inside.

"Sugar Motta Pierce Lopez!" Santana charged at Sugar furiously. "Where have you been? And why aren't you answering your cell phone? It's 7:00! Dinner was already served! Me and momma have been worried sick about you!"

Sugar was used to her mami's angry rants, however they never felt good. "I'm sorry mami, if I told you, you wouldn't believe me." Sugar explained.

"Oh you better tell me right now. Was it a boy? My god Sugar it was the first day at school and you're already getting around like that? Did you learn nothing from me!" Santana was a tornado with her words, destroying anything in its way.

"No, nothing like that!" Sugar yelled back. The two of them were getting closer and closer to each other, arguing back and forth.

Brittany was sitting silently at the table with her head in her hands, trying not to get in the way. Santana and Sugar went back and forth until Brittany couldn't take it anymore.

"Stop the violence!"

Both the girls stopped to look at Brittany, who looked puffy with tears.

"Sorry." Santana retreated.

"I'm sorry too." Sugar hung her head down. "I should've called, but someone was in trouble."

"What happened?" Brittany asked quietly. The two of them sat down at the table with her and Sugar took a couple breaths before explaining herself.

"There were these guys just harassing Beth and I tried to help her." Sugar lied to her parents. She couldn't tell them what was really going on, no way they would take her seriously if she did.

Santana was still on edge and gave her daughter a suspicious look. "You better be telling the truth or my Psychic Mexican Third Eye will tell me the truth."

"Santana." Brittany rubbed her wife's shoulder.

"Sorry."

Brittany let out a long sigh. "There's leftovers in the fridge. Good job standing up to those guys. I need to talk to mami upstairs." Brittany pulled Santana's arm and walked upstairs leaving Sugar to herself.

Sugar grabbed leftovers and ate while watching an episode of whatever hospital show was on TV. She figured she'd try to get to bed earlier than usual. She heard muffled laughter from her parents' bedroom. I guess they're not mad. Sugar thought and quickly shuddered, trying to get the image of her moms "making up" out of her head.
