Hey everyone! This is a story idea that popped into my head recently and I felt I had to write at least a one-shot for it. If you guys are interested in a crossover like this, let me know! I'm not abandoning either of my other stories, but sometimes I have to flesh out something new so my ideas don't get stale. Anyways, thanks for checking my stuff out, and leave a review if you've got any recommendations for a crossover like this. Enjoy!

A Butler's Duty

"Guards!"

Pitted up against the same thugs for the fourth time, Subaru trusted in the knowledge he gained from his last loop.

"What the hell!? You bastard!"

The shortest of the three mooks screamed at him in annoyance.

My memory from before was right! This world has something akin to a police force!

"Someone, please! I need a man!"

"Damnit, shut up!"

"No! Don't touch me, stop! Police… huh,"

Despite his feminine cries, nobody came immediately running to Subaru's rescue, bringing reassurance to the thugs.

"Don't scare me like that… I might have freaked out, just a little,"

"Just a little bit,"

"Just a tiny little bit,"

Brandishing their varying blades, they began slowly walking towards the now panicking Subaru.

"Trying to run won't help you, by the way,"

With a sinister grin on his face, the short one taunted him, confident in his approach.

Damnit, where the hell are the guards! Don't tell me I've gotta die to these idiots again!?

"Excuse me young man, is there a problem here?"

An unfamiliar voice called out from behind Subaru, prompting him to turn around in relief.

Except instead of the guard he was expecting, it was an elderly butler who stood at the entrance to the alleyway.

The thugs froze in fear for a moment, before they too realized the identity of the newcomer as he walked into the darkness of the alley.

"You had us for a second there, grandpa!"

"Hahahaha! The poor kid thought he was in the clear!"

"Beat it you old geezer, you wouldn't want to get your master involved in this unpleasant matter, would you?

They all made sure the butler could see their weapons, motioning for him to get lost.

Please don't leave me out to dry, old man! I feel bad relying on the elderly, but I'm not about to take a knife to the back again over something this stupid!

However, before Subaru could speak up, the old man made a declaration.

"How unfortunate for you, that I find myself in a rare spot of unemployment. Thus, the consequences of my actions are all my own,"

This statement confused Subaru, surely this butler didn't mean that he intended to take on all three of them for his sake.

"Are you out of your mind, old man!? We don't wanna hurt you, but if you get involved, don't think we won't give you a beating!,"

The butler chuckled to himself, and got into an attack stance.

"Saving someone who is in trouble is common sense! Young man, I suggest you don't turn around, for your own safety,"

Before Subaru could ponder the meaning behind his words, he felt every hair on his body rise in fear, a bodily response he had grown more than accustomed too.

"Wha- what the hell are you!"

"S-Stay away! Stay away!"

"What the hell is this feeling!?"

The thugs that previously stood with absolute confidence had collapsed to the ground, two of them curled in a fetal position, the other completely unconscious, foaming at the mouth.

Despite his every instinct telling him not to turn around, his greater sense of curiosity got the better of him, and Subaru turned his head to look back at the butler.

All at once, it was as if the world had gone dark around him. The sheer pressure of the air pushing past him made his knees buckle, but he managed to remain on his feet.

"Wha- what's happening!?"

The fear and panic he had felt before dying in his other loops couldn't come close to the paralyzing force he felt emanating from this butler.

Much to his relief, the darkness disappeared only moments after appearing around him.

He felt completely drained, mentally and physically, but he was still standing, still alive.

The butler approached the shivering Subaru, his legs still shaking, and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"I told you not to turn around, but I must say, you surprised me. I assumed someone of your temperament would crumple like those common criminals,"

Subaru was still in a state of shock, but the old man's words managed to get through to him.

"W-What do you mean? How did you do, whatever that was?"

The butler hesitated for a moment before responding, but decided the boy deserved to know the truth.

"To put it simply, I unleashed a portion of my killing intent. Not enough to cause real harm, but an amount suitable to disabling weak-willed individuals like those unfortunate young men,"

Killing intent? What is this geezer talking about? Is he seriously saying he did all that just from his menacing aura alone!?

While Subaru had made more than his fair share of bad calls since coming to this new world, the appearance of this mysterious butler screamed "Person important to progressing the plot".

"Tell me though, how did someone like yourself overcome the fear of death?"

This question came out of left field for Subaru, but worst of all, he had no way of explaining how he had already died two more times than a normal person would expect in their lifetime.

The resounding silence to his question was more than enough to answer his question, though.

"Perhaps I'm prying too far into a delicate matter, forgive me. We are still strangers after all,"

Subaru was able to pick up on his cue, and introduced himself to his unlikely savior.

"Well, my name is Natsuki Subaru! Not only am I clueless, I'm also broke beyond compare!"

The eccentric introduction along with his goofy "finger to the sky" pose elicited a hearty laugh from the old man.

"I must say, you are a strange one, Natsuki Subaru. My name is Sebas Tian, please call me Sebas,"

The butler known as Sebas finished his introduction with a slight bow, a movement Subaru assumed he had refined over his long career as a butler.

"I don't exactly know how to thank you for saving me, I mean if you hadn't shown up, I was probably toast,"

The benevolent man waved his hand and shook his head.

"Your thanks is more than enough, besides, it's a butler's duty to help those in need, especially now that I find myself without work…"

Subaru rubbed the back of his head trying to come up with a suitable response, but came up blank.

I can't even put in a good word for him with someone like Satella, not if she doesn't remember our time together…

"I wish I could be of more help, but someone as professional as yourself shouldn't have to look far for decent work, right?"

Sebas shrugged at this remark. He doubted there was anyone in this city with better butler skills than himself, but that wasn't the nexus of his employment issue.

"I suppose I simply lack the connections, this city and country is brand new to me. That, and any work I'd take from here on out would have to benefit me in a certain way, but I'm not sure how I'd explain that,"

Clad in his tracksuit and carrying a plastic bag full of Japanese snacks, Subaru guessed that Sebas could tell he was foreign to this area, well world, as well, enough reason to assume he'd lack any connections that would help him in his search.

"Well, in that case, and I feel real bad asking this after you saved me, but do you think you'd be able to do me a favor? It's real simple, I promise,"

Subaru reflexively winced, expecting to be told off for not being gratuitous, but was instead surprised by Sebas' response.

"If it's truly an easy favor, raise your head. You must be more confident in your requests, otherwise the city folk here will treat you like a pushover,"

"U-Ah, yeah, got it. If you happen to see a white haired half elf named Satella, please tell her to stay away from the storehouse, no matter what,"

It was an odd request for someone lacking context, but it was clearly a pressing matter for the boy, so Sebas obliged.

"Of course, I'll make sure she understands the gravity of your warning as well. If that's all though, I think I'll be on my way,"

Sebas bowed to him once again, treating him with more respect than anyone else in this world had besides Satella.

"Wait, before you go-"

The butler stopped mid stride and turned to look back at the young man who had peaked his interest.

"Thank you very much!"

Subaru accompanied his thanks with the deepest bow he could muster, prompting a laugh from Sebas.

"Take care of yourself, Subaru. Someone like myself won't always be around the corner,"

He turned once again, walking out into the light of the city street, leaving a confused, albeit relieved Subaru still bowing, his face still staring at the ground.

This world might be more dangerous than I thought, if that's even possible after what I've been through…
