Fairies can heal themselves but it takes time for the body to learn that skill. The healing process for minor injuries in child fairies, while faster than a human child's, still needs a few days (just less so) to recover.
"My god Poof, you can't just run on top of glass like that. Just because the edges aren't sharp doesn't mean they can't cut you.", Cassia groaned, as she cleaned the blood off her younger brother's cuts, trying to sweep some of the remaining purple glass off. Poof continued to cry as Cassia kept wiping, hoping their grandfather would come back in the bathroom soon.
She didn't quite understand it. Often, she would listen to her parents tell them stories of their last godchild, Timmy, and all the adventures they had trying to off Vicky, his babysitter (as far as what she understood). They spoke rather critically of his actual parents and complained about them leaving Timmy all the time. While it wasn't as often that Cosmo and Wanda had to leave their kids in Fairy World, Cassia couldn't help but frown, confusion cluttering her head. If they were so bent on not making the same mistakes this Timmy kid's parents made, why were they here?
There was a soft knock on the door, starling Cassia and snapping her out of her thoughts as their grandfather, Linnie (Papa Cosmo) came in, holding a white case with a red cross on it.
"I've got the first aid kid. It took me a bit to find it, but I think it still has what we need. Here, I think you can stop wiping now dear.", Linnie said, opening the box and pulling out disinfectant and some bandages that wrapped around the foot. "Now, this will sting for a bit but I really need you to hold still, sweetheart. We want your cuts to be cleaned so they don't make you sick, ok?"
Poof nodded, tears still streaming down his face. He winced slightly as Linnie spread some of the slime onto his foot, a cold, stinging sensation on his foot. He clinged onto Cassia for comfort as Linnie finally wrapped the foot in the bandages, kissing it softly afterwards.
"There you go, sweetie. It's all taken cared of. There there.", Linnie said softly, wiping the tears that still flowed from Poof's round face, "Aww, it's ok. It was only an accident. It happens to everyone."
"B-But Grandma will get mad! A-and I don't want her to hit me."
"I'm not going to let her hurt you, I promise Poof.", Linnie whispered, hugging and rubbing Poof's back as he cried. Cassia shifted nervously to the side, looking at her grandfather with concern.
"Couldn't we fix it? O-Or get another one? Surely we could fix it before she finds out.", Cassia asked, her voice shaking a bit. Linnie frowned and shook his head.
"I'm sorry honey but I'm afraid I already swept up the glass. I hadn't really thought about fixing it. I-I just wanted the glass gone so Poof would stop stepping on it. I'm sorry darling."
If her grandfather and brother hadn't been in the room at that moment, Cassia would've cursed out loud, wondering what she did to deserve being stuck in this situation. She sat in front of the bathtub as she watched Linnie pick up and rock her brother back and forth, shushing him. Why couldn't they have just been left at Grandpa Big Daddy and Grandma Fairywinkle's place? Sure, they barely paid any attention to them while they visited, but at least they felt somewhat safe. Cassia really wanted answers. She wanted to curse her parents out for putting Poof in this situation but shook her head against it. She knew better than to talk back to them.
Still, it wasn't fair. Poof was only 4, and she was only 12. How are little kids supposed to protect themselves? Why were her mom and dad so willing to help out human kids, but not their own children? She felt tears threaten to trickle down her eyes, but quickly rubbed them, not allowing her brother to see weakness in her eyes.
At last, Cassia heard the front door creek from downstairs, a loud, harsh slam following about 10 seconds later, causing any noise in the bathroom to silence completely.
"WHO THE HELL BROKE MY VASE? THAT WAS A PRICELESS FAMILY HEIRLOOM!", a loud, female voice boomed. Great, the demon spawn came home from work; a bit later than usual, "WELL? I DON'T HAVE ALL DAMN DAY! WHO BROKE THE VASE? LINNIE! GET DOWN HERE NOW!"
Linnie squeaked as he put Poof now next to where Cassia was now standing, rushing out the door faster than Cassia had ever seen him. Poof tried to get up and head towards the stairs, before Cassia stopped them, both now able to hear the commotion from the two adults.
"What the fuck is my vase doing smashed into a million pieces! Didn't I tell your dumbass to keep an eye on it? Why the hell weren't you paying attention?", Nora (Mama Cosma) yelled, her words slurring a bit as she looked up at her husband, "Which one of them smashed it, huh? You had better tell me right now before I beat everyone's ass."
"H-Honey..I-It was just a-an accident. P-please we can get it replaced! I..um..think I saw it at..uh..", Linnie whimpered before receiving a smack.
"Did you not understand a word of what I said, dumbass? It's a family heirloom! We can't buy it back! How the hell we gonna buy family memories back? Besides, that's not what I asked you.", Nora growled, "Who. Broke. It? I'm giving you once last chance, Linnie Cosma."
Poof started to shake violently as Cassia held him tighter, worried if Papa Cosmo might rat him out.
"I..uhm..I broke it..while I was vacuuming. I-I didn't realize how important that vase was to you. I'm sorry honey.", he sniveled, looking down at the floor. The room was silent for a little while as Cassia decided to creak the bathroom door open to see what was going on. Almost as soon as she did though, she heard a thud from downstairs and Linnie's voice crying.
"Yeah yeah…go ahead and have your little pity party sweetheart. It's not gonna bring me back my vase. Maybe that'll teach you a lesson.", Nora voice muttered, thought slowly starting to sound calmer, "That's what you get for messing with my shit. Now get out of my face, now!"
Cassia quickly pulling the door back closer (without actually shutting it) as Linnie's crying got louder and louder, his bedroom door swinging shut. Poof began to cry once more as Cassia hugged him, their bodies refusing to stop shaking. She even tried to keep her sobs to herself in case Nora came up and heard them cowering in the bathroom, but once she heard the back door slam shut, Cassia's tears finally flowed out, clinging onto her brother for comfort.
A couple of hours later, Nora had been heard re-entering the house and didn't say much for the rest of the evening. Just for tonight, Cassia had allowed Poof to sleep with her and even allowing him to bring his stuffed rabbit, even though it easily took up almost half the bed. Cassia fell asleep somewhat early, but Poof kept tossing and turning, wondering when their parents were going to come back from their trip. He also wondering what would happen for the next two days while they were here, and if Nora would ever find out about him actually breaking the vase. After a while, Poof eventually had given up as he heard some clinging noises from the kitchen.
Careful not to wake his sister, he clutched his rabbit and crawled down towards the white light, inching his way downstairs to find Linnie at the counter, pouring some milk to drink. Instead of his reading glasses, he sported a bunch of purple stuff around his left eye and a sad frown on his face, dazing off into the white liquid as he drank it.
"Papa?", Poof's voice called out softly, making Linnie's head jerk up.
"Poof? What are you doing up, sweetheart? It's way past bed time.", Linnie asked, putting the glass down, "Are you alright? Did you have a bad dream or something?"
"What's that?", Poof asked, pointing at Linnie's left eye. He smiled softly.
"I-It's nothing sweetie. Just had a bit of an accident, that's all. I promise I'll be alright."
"Ouch?", Poof asked once more, crawling up to get a closer look at his eye. Linnie covering it up, still keeping his smile.
"Please don't worry darling. I put some ice on it earlier, so it will get better in a little bit."
Poof didn't listen, but rather he kept looking at his grandfather's eyes, noting that his other one was stained red, much like his did when he was crying about his food. There also seemed to be some streams of water on his cheeks. After he fully got a look at Linnie's face, he reached his arms out as if he wanted to be held. Linnie's small smile widened slightly as he picked him up, hugging him in his arms, before a small kiss was felt on his cheek.
"It's ok. The ouch will go away soon. Promise."
