Some people might think that a funeral is a really weird place to start a story, but, regardless, this is where my story begins. I have to say, my life isn't some high school fairy tale. If someone told you that I was just an average kid without a care in the world except for getting good grades and raising my GPA high enough to get into a good college, they would be lying. However, like any story, it involves a classic case of boy meets girl; one girl in particular: Courtney Whitmore. The girl next door, the girl that I love. However, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me go back to the day that my life changed forever.
Orlando, Florida. January 8, 2020.
Zach Bogumill stood silently as he watched his mother and father's coffins being lowered into their graves. He felt a great swell of grief in his chest. It had only been a week and a half since the auto accident that claimed both their lives, and Zach still wept every night for them. He'd told them who he really was only 3 weeks before, and even though they had been shocked, they seemed to accept it. It felt exceptionally cruel that they understood who he was, only to have his biggest allies taken away from him so soon after. Zach rubbed sweat of his head. It was amazing that despite it being winter, it was always muggy and humid in Florida.
As Zach wept, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see that it was, in fact, Mr. Ditko: his parent's attorney. He had been acting as the executor of his parent's estate while also letting Zach stay at his house until other arrangements had been made. It was good to see him and Zach was appreciative for everything that he had been doing for him as of late.
"I'm sorry you have to go through this, Zach," He replied solemnly. "I know this is hard for you, but it has been decided for you to go live with your Aunt and Uncle."
Zach's heart dropped at those words. "But they live all the way in Nebraska!"
"I understand it'll be an adjustment, but they're your only relatives. It took a lot of pleading, but they've finally agreed to take you. If they'd refused, you've been placed in foster care."
"Do they know?"
"They know... and they have made it clear that they will not tolerate your... lifestyle choice as long as you are living with them."
Zach sat on the ground, tears threatened to make a free fall from his eyes.
He'd finally found out who he was, only to have his identity snatched away, just like that.
Blue Valley, Nebraska. A few days later.
Bob Bogumill had personally driven down to pick up his nephew in his SUV. The long hours on the road from Florida to Nebraska had been quiet, mainly because there was not a lot to say. Eventually, they arrived in the town of Blue Valley. It looked like your average American small town. All in all, it was a nice place to live. The only thing that bothered Zach was the idea that the people of Blue Valley might not be open to people like him. As they pulled into their driveway, Zach and his Uncle Bob started unloading his bags in silence. The inside of the house looked very typical, as if it were something out of a good homes magazine. Once they brought them into the house. Zach saw an older boy with a buzz cut and a trench coat jacket coming down the stairs. He took a look at Zach in his masculine clothing and shook his head with a smirk.
"What's up, cousin?" He asked in a sneaky tone.
"Hey, Jacob," Zach muttered as Jacob played around with his clothes and pushed the boy around.
"These are some pretty interesting threads, Bella." He said as pulled Zach's hat down over his eyes.
"Don't do that." Zach said while he slapped Jacob's hand away. Meanwhile, his Aunt Tonya came into the room. Zach was relieved for a moment, thinking that she might help,
"That is enough Isabella, why can't you act like a proper lady?" Tonya exclaimed, glaring at Zach.
"Because i'm a boy and my name is Zach, get it?" the boy pointed out.
Bob stormed into the room and cuffed Zach on the back of the head. "You listen up, Isabella Grace Bogumill!" He exclaimed. "I don't know why my brother and his wife went along with your bullshit, but it stops right here, right now. You are a girl, so get that through your thick skull!" Zach stood there shaking as he was misgendered and dead named.
"Get upstairs now!" Tonya yelled.
Zach glumly marched up the stairs to his new room, which he found, to his horror, looked like the kind any teen girl would drool over. It appeared as though a pink glitter bomb had gone off in there. The closet and dressers were filled with frilly girly clothes and he groaned at the sight of them.
Zach did not go downstairs for supper, preferring to go hungry than endure more harsh treatment from his family. As he got ready for bed, he looked in the mirror. His cherry red hair was far too long, and the bandages he'd used to bind his breasts were coming undone. Zach was a transgender boy, and he was paying the price for trying to be who he really was. He hated how his aunt and uncle had tormented him and he longed for his parents to take him away and love him, but it would never happen for Zach. The way they had treated the boy made him feel worthless and ashamed. He reluctantly put on the pink nightgown Tonya had set out for him and tried to get some sleep before his first day at Blue Valley High.
NEXT TIME, ZACH MEETS BLUE VALLEY'S BRIGHTEST STAR. REVIEWS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED.
