Chapter 9 – The end:

Thor eventually managed to work Loki's limp body back to the bed. Loki was physically spent after using a huge portion of his magic on his brother. When Loki sat on the edge of the bed ready to collapse Thor quickly realised the wounds on his back were bleeding again, the crimson liquid seeping though the linen turning that red too. So, he propped his bother up with some pillows to keep him as upright as he could while he went to get some fresh water.
He thought back to how hard his brother was pressed up against the wall, forcing his back into the boundary yet he showed no signs of feeling any pain. All the pain Loki felt in that moment was mental; it made Thor angry.
When he returned, Loki looked like he had regained most of his senses. The chitauri had done quite a number on his mind and up until now his eyes were hazy as the thoughts didn't allow him to become fully aware of anything – too scared to believe the situation.
Loki now watched his brother fully alert and back in his 'right' mind as Thor approach. Although his eyes were following the blonde God, Loki was fully focusing on his breathing wishing that Thor wouldn't do this right this second. He wanted a break from the pain but, unfortunately, he is never granted any respite. Deep down he knew his wounds needed to be taken care of or another infection may take over his body but he just didn't want anymore pain.
Thor rung out the water from a fresh linen cloth before he pressed it gently to Loki's slashed spine. The frost giant flinched away with a hiss but didn't protest as he gritted his teeth together. Thor carried on, washing away the blood while Loki gave occasional whines and would clench his hand into a fist before bringing it down on the mattress trying to control his whimpers.
"Almost done brother." Thor said as he wiped away the last remnants of blood from his brothers back. Loki gave a grateful sigh as the linen was placed back into the bowl on the floor for the final time. "Soon there shall be no pain from these." Thor thought out loud as he draped his brothers back in a clean, fresh cloth.
"But never free from pain." Loki said absentmindedly as he played with a split end in the blanket underneath him from where he had clutched the blanket in his sleep and ripped it. Thor gave Loki a confused look from behind him before helping his brother down into a comfortable position on the bed.
"What do you mean brother?" It was Loki's turn to give a confused look as he never realised, he had spoken his thoughts out loud.
"Never mind." Loki spoke as he turned his head away from the blonde. Thor watched for a moment as Loki blinked slowly before staring off to the other side of the cell.
"Talk to me." Thor pushed gently, placing a hand on Loki's arm which caused Goosebumps to cascade down said arm at the touch.
Loki still refused to answer but Thor waited knowing Loki would eventually say something. The God of Mischief couldn't help but always have the last say in a conversation; it was in his nature.
"Ill never be free from pain."
Thor tilted his head at his brothers comment. "What do you mean?" Slightly confused but wanting his brother to open up to him he allowed himself to speak freely.
"I'm just destined to suffer." Loki loved his riddles. Life, of course, didn't come without a certain amount of pain but Loki felt like he had suffered five lifetimes worth already and he was still only young. The future scared him as it always seemed like he would either cause suffering or have it reflected unto him.
"You're not." Thor said calmly. "You're destined for good things, brother." He had never seen the God of Mischief so low before.
"I'm not though." Loki finally turned back to face Thor. "When the title of 'God of Mischief' was handed to me I was young and naive." He sighed and closed his eyes sinking his head furthur into the pillows. "I don't even think I live up to that title anymore."
"A God?" Thor asked but he knew which title his brother meant instead.
"Well," Loki shook his head sorrowfully. "Both 'God' and 'Mischief'."
Loki pulled himself into a sitting position with a grunt of pain. He felt too vulnerable lay down talking like this.
"I haven't been very mischievous in the last few years, have I?"
"And?" Thor asked. "I can go days, even weeks, without summoning thunder. That doesn't make me not worthy of the title, does it?"
"No." Loki spoke honestly at his brothers' words. Thor still not grasping what his brother was trying to get at. "But Mischief just doesn't suit me anymore."
Loki now bore a sorrowful look in his eyes as he averted his gaze from the god before him.
"If not mischief then what?" Thor asked curiously.
"The prince of suffering."
