All Roads Lead Home
Chapter 12
"Mike, you are overdoing it. You need to rest and stay in bed. When you wake up, needing to go to the bathroom, wake me up. Don't try to do it all yourself." Christine lectured as she changed Mike's bandages. The incisions and wounds looked terrible.
"Its boring in here." Mike complained.
"You sound like Hannah when you whine like that. Difference is; she's fourteen and its relatively cute, but you are definitely not fourteen. You were stabbed three times, shot once and was beaten within an inch of your life. You have to take it easy." Christine warned. She patted the bandage on his chest and then put a pillow behind his head.
"Didn't think you cared." Mike remarked.
"The girls need you." Christine said.
"Right." Mike answered sheepishly.
"Well, if that will be it; I am going to bed. Since I'm in with Hannah; I want to get settled before she goes to sleep and takes over the entire bed." Christine told him.
"Does she still kick?" Mike asked.
"Like a mule." Christine answered with a laugh.
"For someone so small, you wouldn't think she would kick that hard." Mike remarked. Hannah was still very petite.
"I feel sorry for her future husband." Christine said. Mike only groaned.
"I don't want to think about that. Seriously, if it gets to be too much; you can come in here. I won't bite." Mike offered.
"I'm not worried about you biting. I'm worried that if we are in that close of proximity, we will act like two hormonal teenagers again. That couple hours was a lot of fun but we can't do it again." Christine argued.
"Glad you thought it was fun." Mike teased. His grin had been Christine's undoing more then once, but she couldn't fall for it again. Not if she wanted to make her point.
"It was." Christine admitted.
"Glad you thought so. Breanna didn't think so." Mike said.
"Uh…Mike; comparing the two of us? Is that even wise? I'm not twenty-nine anymore." Christine remarked.
"True and you also didn't try to kill me." Mike said with a laugh.
"Is that it?" Christine asked as she started to cover Mike with a blanket.
"One more thing." Mike answered as he gently pulled her down and landed a kiss on her lips. Christine could have pulled away or stopped him, but she didn't because it felt good. Instead of being intense like before, it was slow and sweet. Finally, she stood up.
"This can't keep happening, Mike. We have to either figure things out or we have to give up. And I am too tired tonight. Maybe tomorrow." Christine said before she walked out of the room. She had to leave before she made a mistake before Mike had figured out exactly what was going on. She just hoped he wouldn't need her through the night because he was chipping through the façade.
