Chapter 3: Death is Only the Beginning.
"Her lung is filling up with blood!"
Who is that?
"Miss, can you hear me? Hold on just a bit longer!"
The voice sounds so far away. So much pain, make it end!
"We're losing her! Come on! Stay with us!"
"I'll try.
"Doctor, the bullet is lodged in her spleen and a rib punctured her lung! We must relieve the pressure in her lung if she is to live!"
That was the last thing Kagome heard before her world went silent again.
*Break*
Yuka sat in the waiting room of the hospital after leaving Kagome's kids with her mom she followed the ambulance to the hospital, praying the entire way. The paramedics pronounced Kagome's mom dead at the scene and Kagome's dad was in prison.
"Kagome's family?" A nurse called out.
Yuka stood up rushing to the nurse. "How is she? Is she alive!?"
"Well, we're doing all we can-but she's in critical condition. One of her ribs punctured her lung and the bullet is lodged in her spleen. We have to get the blood out of her lung before we can do the surgery to remove her spleen. Another thing that's against her is she's severely underweight." The nurse explained.
"Oh, God! Kagome!" Yuka cried. "Her being underweight is because her mother only allowed her to eat gruel twice a day."
The nurse nodded. "We're trying everything we can to save her." The nurse said placing a hand on her shoulder.
Yuka was about to say something when she got interrupted by a voice through the intercom. "Code blue! Code blue! We need a crash cart in here, now!" Yuka fell to the ground as she watched the nurse run back to where the commotion was happening. Yuka outstretched her hand, tears flowing freely, she knew who coded without having to be told and she was terrified. She didn't want her best friend to die.
*Break*
"Clear!"
"Nothing! Do it again!"
"Clear!"
"Turn it up and do it again!" The doctor demanded.
"Clear!"
"Come on! Beat!" The doctor demanded as he pumped on her chest. "Shock her one more time!"
"Clear!"
Beep, beep, beep.
"We got her heartbeat back and the blood is out of her lung. Get her prepped for her spleen removal." The doctor ordered.
"Yes, doctor." The nurse answered.
*Break*
Yuka paced the waiting room biting on her thumb nail. She kept looking up at the clock, "it's been three hours since anyone has came to tell me anything. Oh, Kagome, please be okay!"
Just then the doors opened and Yuka rushed to the nurse. "Is Kagome okay? Oh, God! Please tell me she's okay!"
"We got her heartbeat back and did the spleen removal surgery. She did well with the surgery, though she lost a lot of blood and needed a blood transfusion. She's stable now and is resting." The nurse answered.
Yuka released a relieved breath. "Can I see her? Is she awake?"
"Yes, she's awake and you can see her but only for about an hour, she needs her rest." The nurse said leading Yuka to Kagome's room.
Yuka opened the door to Kagome's room and saw her with her eyes closed, hooked to an I.V. "Oh, Kagome!" Yuka whispered, tears springing into her eyes.
Kagome opened her eyes and smiled. "Hey, Yuka."
Yuka made it to the side of Kagome's bed and grabbed her hand. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I've been hit by a car." Kagome laughed humorlessly and bit her lip. "What happened to them?"
Yuka knew who she was talking about. "They pronounced you mom dead at the scene and your dad is in prison."
Kagome didn't say anything so Yuka continued. "Isn't that great, Kagome? You don't have to go to America now."
"No," Kagome sighed, "I still need to go."
"What? Why?" Yuka whined.
"Because, Yuka, dad has many ties with the police! If he's not out now it's only a matter of time before he does get out!" Kagome explained. "I still need to go to protect my children!"
Yuka sighed, tears running down her face. She knew Kagome was right but that didn't make it hurt any less.
The doctor chose that time to walk in. "Ah, you're awake. How you feeling?"
"Everything hurts." Kagome told him honestly. "When can I leave?"
"That's normal, it'll take about a week or so before the pain subsides. If everything comes back good you'll be able to leave either tomorrow or the next." The doctor said.
Kagome nodded, satisfied with that answer.
The doctor turned to Yuka. "Okay, visiting hours for this one is over. She needs her rest."
Yuka nodded. "Bye, Kagome. I'll see you tomorrow." Then she left.
Please review. Until next time, bye!
