"Fitzwilliam Darcy!"
"Everything you touched," Darcy said proudly.
"What in heaven's name-" Elizabeth was laughing too hard to continue. "You'll take it all back, of course?"
"Absolutely not! I had them all engraved."
"Fitzwilliam Alexander Darcy!"
"Oh, you're very welcome, my love."
"We had quite a job getting it all here in time for this evening," Bingley chimed in. "Darcy was his imposing best; informing the shop that they were to have everything ready by nine o'clock!"
"I paid them extra." Darcy was unabashed.
"But what will I do with it all?"
"Whatever you'd like, Mrs. Darcy. Oh- and here is the music box you selected as the gift you wanted."
Elizabeth took the dainty thing, wiping tears from her eyes. "Fitzwilliam, what on Earth has gotten into you?"
Darcy grinned. "This is the first chance I've ever gotten to make my wife's birthday special."
"But all this- it's too much!"
"Utter nonsense from my sensible wife!"
Elizabeth swatted him.
"If she thinks this is extravagant," Jane stage-whispered, giggling, "then we oughtn't let her see the cake."
"Fitzwilliam Alexander Matthew Darcy!"
