Curiosity

Her country has fallen;

Her family is scattered;

And all she once knew,

All she cherished,

Is lost.

She isn't prepared to give up,

To surrender;

She'll stand and be counted,

Regardless of cost.

~0~

She made her way up,

Through the layers of Resistance;

Risked all for a cause

Which she knows to be right.

She's learned what it takes

To plough on through adversity;

Witnessed close friends lose their lives

In the fight.

~0~

She's out on her own,

Within reach of the enemy;

Hidden, observing

The closed Stalag gates.

A volunteer mission,

Her choice…

She was curious;

Intrigued by the leader,

Whose plans she awaits.

~0~

She's heard many rumours,

Words filtered through secrecy;

Tales of this camp,

And those men locked inside.

Those men who are facing

Long years of captivity;

Prospects of freedom,

Completely denied.

~0~

Who takes on the challenge,

Of leading such missions?

The lives of the prisoners of war

In his care.

Who juggles the orders,

The setbacks and danger,

Yet, somehow, keeps every last ball in the air?

~0~

She stops in her musing,

As noises distract her;

The grinding of tank tracks,

Loud protests

And more…

Hears expertly managed

Chaotic confusion;

Quite certain such antics

Have happened before.

~0~

A sound…running footsteps,

A shadow beside her;

She tenses until

A soft whisper…

Her name.

She turns,

Notes a look of confusion;

Plans altered.

Bold move, or mistake?

They'll adapt

Just the same.

~0~

He ducks past the searchlights;

She times him,

And follows.

A stump conceals entry;

She drops

Out of sight.

She waits at the foot

Of a ladder;

Sharp voices.

Climbs up;

Her hair loose

And reflecting the light…
