October 7th Davenport Lab (Maddie's POV)-
Ugh this I felt worse this morning than I did yesterday. I needed to focus on my presentation. Luckily Alex had class this morning otherwise he probably wouldn't have let me leave. I downed half a bottle of cough syrup before leaving the house. I was walking into the lab in my biggest hoodie and trying to walk in a straight line.
"Hey, can I use this? I need a place to store my toenail clippings." I heard Adam asked as I walked in.
"You save your toenails?" Leo asked in disgust.
"Of course. They're nature's toothpicks." If I wasn't nauseous before I definitely would've been now.
"You don't even want to know what he flosses with." Bree gagged.
"You really don't." Even Adam gagged and I had to swallow the throw up I felt coming.
Chase came over to me noticing that I had come in quietly. "Hey Madds, everything okay?"
"Yeah. I'm fine, my allergies are just acting up." I said through my stuffy nose. I could tell he was about to push further but stopped when he saw what Adam was doing.
"Hey, get away from that! It's not empty! There are thousands of metallic nanobots in there!" Chase took the beaker from Adam.
"Well, then, why can't I see them?" Adam asked.
"Because they're microscopically small." I explained jumping in.
"But Chase is microscopically small and I can still see him." Adam laughed.
"Nanobots are so tiny, they're invisible to the human eye. Here, I'll show you. Put these on." Chase gave him the goggles and he looked at the nanobots in awe.
"They function like mini-doctors inside the human body." I said while rubbing my nose.
"When patients swallow them, they'll seek and destroy any diseased cells or foreign matter." Chase explained.
"Ooh! I got a tennis ball and a mini Statue of Liberty somewhere in my gut. It's time to swallow a search party." Adam tried to take the beaker but Chase fought him for it.
"Adam, no! Those are valuable!" I could tell this wasn't gonna go in the right direction so I adjusted my backpack and gave Bree a look.
She understood and grabbed her bag. "Come on, Leo, we don't want to step on broken glass."
"What broken glass?" Leo asked.
"Wait for it." I said to Leo.
Adam and Chase fought over the bottle until they released it, letting it shatter on the ground. "Right." We walked out as Chase started panicking.
Mission Creek High School (Leo's POV)-
Bree, Maddie, and I were hanging out in the hallway before school but Maddie seemed off.
"Hey Maddie? Are you alright?" I asked. She was mumbling to herself as she read through a stack of cards and I don't think she heard me.
"Maddie? Maddie! Hello?!" Bree tried but nothing would get Maddie's attention off those cards.
"That's it." I pulled the card from her hands.
"Hey!" She exclaimed with a scratchy voice.
"What's wrong with you? It's like you couldn't hear anything." Bree asked.
"I'm not feeling that well but I need to focus on my presentation. This is the first time the Davenport industries board has given me a chance to send out my work." She looked over to see Chase and Adam coming in. "But please don't tell Chase, I don't want him to worry."
Mission Creek High School (Maddie's POV)-
Bree and Leo nodded and left me alone by my locker as Chase headed my way.
"Hey Madds." He kissed my cheek and pulled away quickly.
"Hey baby." I replied without looking up from my note cards.
Chase lifted my chin pulling my focus off of the cards. "Maddie, you're burning up! Are you okay?"
I raised the back of my hand to feel my temperature but I felt normal. "I feel fine. My allergies have been kind of strong today."
Before Chase got the chance to respond, the lights went out and an announcement voice came on. "Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the principal, a four-foot-eleven spitfire from Portland, Maine. Terry Perry!"
"Just thought I'd spice up the morning announcements. Takes me back to my days of playing semi-pro ball in Romania. Here ya go, kid. Souvenir." She tossed her sweat band to a student. Poor kid. "I'm sure you're all wondering why Dewey the Dingo is here. Every year before the big homecoming game against the Deerfield High Leapin' Llamas, some punk manages to steal Dewey. No matter where I put it, they always find a way to get it." Perry explained.
"Maybe you should try wearing it. That'll keep people away." Chase said to Perry.
"Do you really wanna go there, Suzy Skinny Jeans? Any who, to make certain they don't take him this year, I'm assigning round-the-clock shifts." Perry shoved the clipboard into Chase's hands. "Right. I'm gonna go hit the hot tub. Heard a couple things pop when I ran out here."
"Great, two-man shifts, and she paired me with you." Chase said to Adam.
"Mmm. Great. So we got one man. Who's the other one?" Adam mused.
I couldn't help but laugh and Chase's pout but it quickly turned into a cough.
"Maddie? Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah I'm fine. Woah." The room started spinning.
"What? What's going on?" He asked.
"Just a little dizzy spell. It doesn't mean I'm sick though." I sneezed Chase gave me a look.
"You're not sick huh? Yeah, okay." He pulled me to the corner. Chase scanned over my body with his bionic eye. "Maddie, you have the flu and a fever of one hundred and two degrees. You need to go home."
"No, I'm not sick. Just because I threw up three times this morning doesn't mean I can't work on my presentation." I fought.
"Three times?! Maddie! You need to rest. This isn't healthy." I rolled my eyes at him and grabbed one of my textbooks.
"I'm fine." I groaned. I was getting really dizzy and I bumped into something and lost my balance. I crashed to the ground and blacked out as my head hit the floor.
Tompkins House (Chase's POV)-
After Maddie collapsed at school I got Mr. Davenport to call us out early so I could take her home. Maddie really must have needed the rest cause she stayed knocked out all the way to her house. Luckily she lives close enough to the school that I could carry her home.
I texted Alex to let him know then brought Maddie to her room. There were tissues everywhere. I laid her down on her bed and tucked her in since she was shivering. I sat next to her on the bed and ran my hand through her hair. She moaned and smiled in her sleep.
Gosh I couldn't wait to wake up next to her everyday. Wait, what? Where did that come from?
"What? How did I get... oh Chase." She put it together as she woke up. "Oh no! My presentation! Where are my cards?!" She gave me a menacing glare.
"What did you do?" She growled, but it wasn't really effective since her stuffy nose mad her sound like a little girl.
"Relax Madds. I had the presentation moved to next week." I explained.
"That's... actually a good idea." She said tiredly.
"Please just let me help you get better?" She huffed and thought about it.
"I don't want you to get sick." She tried.
"Maddie. You know I can't get sick. My bionics don't allow it." She nodded. "What's the real reason?"
"I don't want you to see me sick. It's not pretty." I just rolled my eyes at this.
"How many times do I have to tell you that you'll never not be gorgeous to me?" I laughed.
"Well you've never seen me sick." Maddie fought.
"Doesn't matter, you're still gorgeous." I wiped the sweat off her forehead and she gave in.
"Fine. If it helps you feel better you can take care of me." She said before promptly falling back to sleep.
. . .
She slept calmly for about an hour before she woke up quickly and ran to her bathroom. "Madds?" I heard her throwing up again and I went to sit behind her. I held her hair back from her face and rubbed small circles on her back.
"Being sick sucks." She whined as she leaned against my shoulder.
"I know, baby." I hummed. "Do you think you can make it back to-" before I could finish the question, Maddie passed out on my chest. I picked her up bridal style and brought her back to her bed and tucked her in again.
After losing everything she did today she needs some nutrients. I went down to the kitchen to make her food, I was able to make a simple chicken noodle soup for her. By the time I came back to help her eat I found my girlfriend shivering on her bed and all of her blankets on the floor. I put the soup down on her night stand and put all the blankets back on the bed for Maddie.
"Madds, babe. Wake up." I tried but she wouldn't wake up. I gave her a kiss on the forehead and she smiled but kept her eyes shut. "Maddie, I know you're awake. Come on, you really need to eat."
"Hi baby." She smiled as she woke up.
"Hi. Are you ready to eat?" I asked and she jumped up.
"No! We have to go save someone." She ran past me. Great now she's delusional.
"Maddie! Get back here!" I ran after her to find her in the living room balled up on the couch. "What's wrong now?"
"My head hurts and I'm cold." She whined. I grabbed a few blankets and placed them around her. Before I could pull away Maddie wrapped her arms around me.
"Maddie what are you doing?" I asked as if I was speaking to a child.
"I wanna cuddle." I have never seen Maddie like this and it was honestly a bit off putting.
"But you need to eat." I tried pulling her off of me but she was weirdly strong.
"No, I want to cuddle." She pulled me closer to the couch. I was finally able to break free when she sneezed. "No! Come back."
"I will but I need to get you food and medicine then I will come back." I kissed her forehead and she buried herself in the blankets and pouted.
I came back with the soup and a bottle of nyquil. I sat down and she moved away from me. "What's wrong now Maddie?"
"You didn't want to cuddle." She mumbled.
"Cause I want to make sure you eat. I'm sorry Madds, I can cuddle with you while we eat." I moved closer so she could see the soup.
"I don't wanna eat. My stomach still hurts."
"Well I'm only gonna cuddle with you if you try to eat." I fought.
She removed one of the blankets from her head and glared at me. "Give me the soup."
As she ate we watched a movie and I got her to take some medicine and she was fighting to stay awake.
She really needed to rest so I tried to help her relax. I combed my hand through her hair and I saw her eyes close.
"N- no, Chase I don't don want to sleep." She said as she fought to stay awake.
"It's time for bed." I continued to brush her hair and she leaned into my lap.
"You're mean." She mumbled.
Tompkins House (Maddie's POV)-
The moment I woke up I quickly realized that I was drenched in sweat. I could hardly remember anything except for throwing up a few times in the past twenty four hours.
"Hey baby." Chase cooed. Poor Chase, he has dealt with me and my grossness all day. "How are you feeling?"
"Better. Thank you. For everything today." I said. "I must've been a wreck."
"Nah it's okay. I thought you were kind of cute." He laughed.
"There's no way." I didn't even like myself when I got sick.
"Yeah it was nice to get to take care of you for a while. Usually you are so independent and never want my help." Now I feel worse. Did Chase really feel like I didn't need him?
"That's not true, I need you each and every day. You make my life better just by being in it." He pulled me into a hug.
"I love you." He said.
"Awe that's sweet." I teased and he just rolled his eyes at me. "Kidding. I love you too."
