Nine year old Carlos and thirteen year old Mei-Li were riding their bikes, enjoying the final days of summer before school started, "I bet I can get to the end of the street faster than you can!" Carlos shouted to his sister.

"Fat chance!" said Mei-Li as she pedaled faster to try to keep up with Carlos. There was no way she was losing the race to a nine year old. She would never hear the end of it from Carlos. As Carlos began to pedal faster to keep ahead of Mei-Li, he lost control of his balance and started to veer off the road, "Carlos, watch out for that trashcan!" yelled Mei-Li. But it was too late. Carlos crashed into it and fell off of his bike, "Carlos!"

Mei-Li rode over to where Carlos was, and the young boy was holding his right arm, "Ow, Mei-Li, my arm hurts."

"It's okay," said Mei-Li softly, "Can you bend it?"

Carlos tried, but instead, he started to cry a little, "I don't think so."

"Let me get Mom and Dad," Mei-Li said and ran back to their house, "Mom, Dad," Melendez and Lim looked over from the TV program they were watching, "Carlos fell off his bike and hurt his arm. I think he might have broken it."

"Oh dear," said Lim and the couple got up off the couch and rushed down the street after Mei-Li.

By the time they reached Carlos, he had tears streaming down his cheeks. Melendez and Lim crouched down and Melendez said, "It's okay, Buddy."

"It hurts, Daddy," Carlos cried.

"I know," said Melendez.

"Can you bend it?" asked Lim.

"No," said Carlos.

"We have to get him to the emergency room," said Melendez. He scooped Carlos carefully into his arms, with Lim and Mei-Li following them to the SUV. Lim grabbed her black bag and locked up the house before the family was on their way to St. Bonaventure. They went into the busy emergency room and Melendez went over to the registration desk to get the paperwork. Melendez filled out the information form while Lim said soothing words to Carlos, but since Carlos wasn't in any sort of cardiac or respiratory distress, nor was he bleeding, the family sat in the waiting room for a while. Finally, Nurse Villanueva took them back to a triage room.

Soon after, Park came into the room and said, "Dr. Melendez, Dr. Lim-Melendez, Mei-Li," he greeted. He sat down in front of Carlos and said, "Hi Carlos, can you tell me what happened?"

Carlos hiccupped and said, "I was riding my bike and I hit a trashcan. I fell off my bike and now my arm hurts."

"Well, we're going to take an x-ray to see if your arm is broken, and if it is, we'll go from there. How's that sound?" asked Park. Carlos nodded and Lim nodded as well, "Alright then."

Park left to go get the x-ray machine, while Lim began saying soothing words in Mandarin to Carlos to try to calm him. Melendez crouched down next to his son and said, "It's going to be okay, mijo."

When Park arrived back, he stopped for a few moments watching his superiors with their son, fondly remembering the time when Kellan was Carlos's age. He entered the triage area and said, "Alright, let's get this x-ray done. I'll need the rest of you to step outside for a moment," he looked at the other Limlendez family members.

"But I don't want to be alone," said Carlos.

"Carlos, we'll be right outside, and we'll only be gone a few seconds," said Lim. She kissed the top of his head and followed her husband and daughter.

Park took the x-ray and ushered them back into the area, "The x-rays should be developed in a few minutes."

Park left and Carlos asked, "Mommy, Daddy, if my arm is broken, what will Dr. Alex do?"

"Well, Buddy, if it's broken, you'll have to wear a cast for six weeks," said Melendez.

Carlos scrunched his nose a little, so Mei-Li said, "Which means you can choose your favorite color for it and have all of your friends sign it, like when Eddie broke his leg playing soccer last year."

"Oh yeah," said Carlos as he recalled their cousin's sports injury.

Park entered the room and set up the developed x-rays before he said, "Well, you do have a broken arm. You've fractured your radius," Park pointed to the spot on the x-ray, "The good news is you won't need an operation. The bad news is you'll have to wear a cast for six weeks, which means you'll probably need some help with everyday tasks."

"Who will help me?" asked Carlos worriedly.

"Mijo, we'll be right there to help you. Me, Mommy, and Mei-Li," said Melendez.

"Always," said Lim.

They both looked at Mei-Li and raised their eyebrows before she said, "Me too," she answered a little reluctantly.

"And once school starts, we'll let your teacher and your other classmates know," said Lim.

"Alright," said Carlos.

"I'll go get the cast material ready. What color would you like for the outside?" asked Park.

"Do you have green?" asked Carlos hopefully.

"Sure do," Park smiled and left the room. When he arrived back, he sat down in front of Carlos and began to apply the bandages for the cast, "You know, when my son, Kellan, was your age, he fell and broke his arm while skateboarding."

"He did?" asked Carlos.

"Mmhm," Park nodded, "You remind me of him sometimes. He loved playing outdoors, riding bikes and skateboards, climbing trees, and playing sports, especially baseball."

"Like me!" said Carlos happily, "Daddy's one of our coaches."

"I know, he talks about your Little League team all the time," said Park, "If I remember correctly, you scored a home run last week."

Carlos nodded, "Mommy, Daddy, and Mei-Li cheered the loudest."

Soon, Park finished with the cast and said, "Well, you're all set. You'll need to keep your cast as dry as possible, so have your Mommy or Daddy put a trash bag or saran wrap over it when you take a bath or shower. Try to rest your arm as much as possible. But other than that, we'll see you back in six weeks for a follow-up x-ray, and hopefully, your cast can come off."

"Thank you, Dr. Park," said Melendez.

The family was just about to leave when Carlos called, "Dr. Alex?" Park turned around to face him, "Would you sign my cast?"

"Carlos," said Lim.

"No, that's okay. Let me go find a Sharpie," said Park. He briefly left and returned, scribbling on Carlos's cast, "To my friend Carlos. Get well soon. - Dr. Alex"
