We'll Do This Together

With Erin nearing her due date, she and Jay were temporarily staying with Hank and Jenna. The Intelligence unit was working extreme overtime due to a horrific case, leaving Erin home alone most evenings. Because she was so close to delivery, no one in the family was very comfortable with her being by herself.

The Chicago winter was ramping up, with new snowfalls every few days. Emerson, experiencing the weather for the first time she could remember, was so enthralled with the magical fluff outside that she insisted on dragging one or both of her parents out to play several times a day.

When she woke up from her nap, all she could think about was the snow. "Pwease pwease!" she begged her parents.

Jenna looked up at Hank. "Your turn."

"My turn?" he asked. "I took her out this morning."

"And I took her out before lunch. It's your turn now."

Hank groaned. "Then you're the one taking her out after dinner."

Jenna laughed, shoving him toward their daughter. "Go. Help her run off some of this energy."

Erin stood at the window into the backyard, watching her father-figure and baby sister chase each other in the snow. She smiled as her hands cradled her baby bump, dreaming of the future when her own little boy would be running around outside with Hank and Emerson.

She was deeply ready for her pregnancy to be over. While she'd been blessed with a fairly easy pregnancy, the last couple of weeks were difficult, as they seem to be for all expectant mothers. If she allowed them, nerves would creep in, causing her to question her ability to be a good mother to this little boy, but Jay, Jenna, and Hank continually reassured her that she would be great in her new role, and they would all be there to support her.

As Erin started back to her place in Hank's recliner, she stopped by the couch, feeling a twinge of tightness in her stomach. She'd been having uncomfortable tightness and cramps over the last couple of days, but she assumed it was just her body continuing to stretch to accommodate her growing son. When the feeling passed, she made her way to the recliner, wrapping herself in a blanket.

A few minutes later, a frozen Hank followed a bouncing Emerson back into the house. Immediately Emerson ran to Erin, her hands holding a snowball.

"Wook Ewin! Snow!" Emerson said excitedly.

"It sure is, Sweetie! Did you have fun with your daddy outside?"

"Yep!" Emerson rushed off to show off her prize to her mom.

"Did you make that all by yourself?" Jenna asked, scooping her daughter up in her arms.

"Daddy helped," Emerson said as she rolled the ball around in her hands.

Hank walked up behind them, wrapping his arms around both of his girls. "Daddy is too old to be running around outside like that. I think Mommy needs to take over outside snow duties," he said as he kissed the top of both of their heads.

"Daddy isn't getting out of helping, is he honey?" Jenna teasingly asked Emerson.

Emerson laughed, not understanding her mom's words but knowing she was teasing both of them. "Here go," she said to Hank, handing him her snowball.

Just then, they heard a car door, and Hank immediately knew Jay was home, at least for a little while. "Emmie, I think Jay is here. How about we go throw it at him?"

"YAY" Emerson said, wiggling out of her mom's arms and running to the door.

Jenna sighed. "Now look what you've started," she said, rolling her eyes and playfully elbowing her husband.

Hank shrugged as he followed Emerson to the door. When he opened the it, Emerson immediately threw her snowball at Jay. Playing along with her, Jay stumbled backwards, pretending he was injured by the tiny force of her throw.

"You got me Em!" he said, causing the little girl to double over laughing. "You're gonna get it now," Jay said, scooping up his own small snowball and tossing it at her.

Emerson squealed, running back into the house and climbing into Erin's lap. She squirmed her way under the blanket and curled up against Erin's stomach. Jay greeted Hank and Jenna before following Emerson over to Erin, giving her a kiss and gently resting his hand on her bump.

"How have you been today?" Jay asked.

Erin shrugged. "Ok I guess. Little weird twinges of pain, but nothing serious. You're home early today. Is everything ok?"

"I'd like to know the answer to that myself," Hank said, as he moved into the living room.

Jay joined him on the couch and said, "It's been a rough day, and it's far from over. There's more snow moving in overnight, so we're setting up an undercover sting for late tonight to try to trap this guy before the weather gets too bad. I'm only home for a couple of hours, and then I'll probably be out until late, if I get to come home at all."

"I hate these late nights for you," Jenna said, as she joined the rest of the family.

"Hopefully it'll be over soon," Jay said, giving her a solemn smile.

As the family enjoyed a quiet afternoon together, Jenna couldn't help but notice Erin pausing during the conversation to grip her belly. She immediately recognized the signs as small contractions. Knowing that another big snowfall was projected, she began to worry a little. While first babies produce notoriously long labors, Jenna also knew that labor could be unpredictable. After Jay returned to work, and as she and Hank began working on dinner, Jenna decided to quietly bring up Erin's condition.

"Have you noticed Erin having contractions this afternoon?" Jenna asked.

Hank shrugged. "I noticed her stumbling over her words occasionally, but nothing really concerning. You think she's having contractions?"

Jenna nodded. "I've been watching her close all day. The contractions are irregular, but they are there. I just hope things progress slowly and we get through this storm without any problems, especially since Jay won't be here until late, if at all."

"Stop worrying," Hank said, pulling Jenna into his arms.

"I'm a mother. It's my job to worry," Jenna said.

Hank gave her a small smile. "I know, and I love you for it, especially when you're worrying about my kids. But things will be fine. If things do progress and this really is labor, we'll get her to the hospital safely, and everything will be fine."

Jenna listened to his words, but as she looked over at Erin the midst of another contraction, she wasn't sure she believed him.

After watching Erin poke at her food and have a few more contractions, Jenna sent Hank to get Emerson ready for bed so she could have some time to talk to Erin. When they were alone, Jenna asked, "Sweetie, are you feeling ok?"

Erin nodded. "Yeah, I'm just having some pain in my stomach and lower back, but I'm fine. I'm sure my body is just stretching to make room for this guy," she said, gently rubbing her bump.

Jenna reached for Erin's hand. "I ask, because I've been watching you since earlier today, and I'm pretty sure what you're feeling is more than just twinges."

"What do you mean?" Erin asked, beginning to feel a little concerned.

Jenna sighed. "Erin, I'm pretty sure what you're feeling are contractions, and with as many as I've seen so far today, I'm pretty sure you're in labor."

Erin stared at Jenna, stunned. As she processed the words, she began shaking her head. "No. N-no, I can't be in labor. Not yet. I'm not due for another couple of days."

"Erin, I know, but babies are on their own schedule, and from the looks of things, your little guy is planning on making his appearance soon."

Fear began coursing through Erin's veins. "Ok, ok, so…so what do we do? Do we need to go to the hospital now?"

Jenna put her arm around Erin. "Not yet. It's too early for that. What we need to do is start timing the contractions so we'll know when it's time to head that way. Most likely it'll be sometime tomorrow morning before we need to go."

"Should I call Jay?"

Jenna shrugged. "It wouldn't hurt to give him a heads up. But I think it's too early to make any decisions right now."

"Ok," Erin said, suddenly feeling a bit of difficulty breathing as she tried to wrap her head around the fact that sometime in the next day or so, she would really be giving birth.

"Breathe Sweetie," Jenna said, rubbing soothing circles on Erin's back as she tried to calm her down. "Trust me, I've done this six times, and Hank has done it twice. We're going to be right by your side the whole time."

Emerson rushed into the room to say goodnight to her mom and sister. Jenna scooped her baby up, cradling her against her. "Are you ready for sleeps?"

Emerson nodded, snuggling up in her mom's arms.

Hank stood just inside the entrance to the kitchen, a look of concern written across his face as he studied the faces of his girls. "Everything ok?" he asked.

Jenna forced a smile. "We're ok for now. Erin seems to be in the early stages of labor, so we're going to keep her comfortable and time her contractions." She stood, letting Emerson give goodnight hugs and kisses to Erin before Jenna carried her to Hank.

"Say goodnight to Daddy," Jenna said.

"Night night Daddy," Emerson said, hugging and kissing him.

"Goodnight Princess. I love you so much."

Jenna leaned close to Hank's ear, speaking quietly to keep their words to themselves. "She's panicking a little. Go try to encourage her and calm her down."

"Got it."

Hank took Jenna's spot at the table next to Erin. He could see the fear in her eyes, and his heart broke a little. He knew she'd been worried about this day coming since the moment she found out she was pregnant, and although he had his own fears for her, he was so grateful they had Jenna to help talk them both through this event that would drastically change all of their lives. Hank wasn't sure what to say to her, but he reached over and took her hand.

"It's gonna be ok," he said softly.

Erin looked up at him, and he could see the tears glistening in her eyes. "I'm scared."

"Don't be. You're going to be great at this, kiddo. That little guy is so lucky that he gets to have you for his mom. I'm just glad I get to watch you do this."

"But what if I'm not good at it?" Erin asked softly as she continued fighting to hold in her tears. "You know the example I had in a mother. Bunny was…Bunny."

Hank sighed. "I know she wasn't a good mother, but you have had good examples in your life. You had Camille, and now you have Jenna. You also know what kind of mother you don't want to be, so you have everything you need to be incredibly successful at this. Jay is going to be a great father, and the two of you will be a great team."

"I hope you're right," Erin said, wiping at a few tears that managed to escape.

"No matter what, for whatever you need, Jen and I are here, and we're more than happy to help you. If that's not enough to convince you, I'm sure Emerson will be thrilled to help as well," he said, smiling as he tried to lighten the mood.

Erin managed a small smile. "I can't wait to see that little girl with Parker. I know they are going to be best friends."

"They will be."

Their conversation was interrupted as Erin experienced her hardest contraction yet. Hank let her squeeze his hand as he softly reminded her to breathe. When it passed, he put his arm around her, pulling her close against his side, softly whispering, "You did great."

As the evening turned into nighttime, Erin's contractions continued to progress. They remained erratic for several hours, but as it neared midnight, she noticed a steady increase in pain and pressure and a decrease in time between them. While she rested during a break, Hank pulled Jenna into the kitchen to talk.

"Should we think about getting her to the hospital?" he asked.

Jenna sighed. "I think we're probably getting close to time. I think you should call Jay and see if he can get away. We can either wait for him here or have him meet us there."

"I hate to wake Emerson up, but Erin will need you, and I don't want the two of you driving alone at night in the snow."

"I know," Jenna said, leaning into him as her arms slipped around his waist.

Hank held her close as he whispered, "We're going to be grandparents again."

Jenna smiled against his chest. "We are. I can't wait to meet this little man."

Their moment was interrupted when Hank's phone started ringing with a call from Jay. Both Hank and Jenna's concern grew drastically as Jay described the weather conditions outside. Neither Hank nor Jenna had bothered to look outside lately, not expecting the snowstorm to begin moving in until later, so they were shocked to hear Jay tell them about the blizzard-like storm he was driving home in. When Hank let him know about Erin's progression and that they had been moments away from calling him to come home, Jay told them to stay at the house, but call an ambulance if they were sure it was time. He assumed an ambulance would have better luck navigating the storm than either Hank or Jenna's vehicles.

When Hank finished his call with Jay, he made the call for an ambulance as Jenna filled Erin in on the plans. She gathered the hospital bags, placing them by the front door, and helping Erin into shoes and a coat. Just as she started to go get Emerson from her bed, Hank walked into the living room.

"We aren't going anywhere," he said nervously.

"Why? What's going on?" Jenna asked.

"The storm is bad enough that the emergency vehicles are having trouble driving, and they are only responding to life or death situations right now. Apparently childbirth in the early stages isn't reason for an ambulance right now."

Jenna was furious at Hank's words. "Did you inform them her labor is progressing? Did you tell them she's a police sergeant?"

Hank put his hands on Jenna's shoulders, trying to calm both of them down. "I did everything I could. They said to call back later as she gets closer to delivery, and if they have an ambulance in the area that can get to her, or if the snowplows can make more headway, they'll get someone over to us. But it looks like we're in for a rough night."

Jenna sighed, her eyes moving from her husband to her surrogate daughter, who was trying to take a small nap between her contractions. "Ok," she said softly, resigning to the situation at hand. "We'll work this out. Hopefully by the time she's ready to go, someone can get here. Hopefully Jay makes it here too."

Several hours later, Hank and Jenna both saw one of their biggest fears coming true. Erin's labor had drastically progressed into regular contractions, and an ambulance was still unable to make it to them. They both worked as hard as they could to help her through contractions, Hank rubbing her back as Jenna held her hands and reminding her to breathe. As the contractions came closer together, Jenna looked up at Hank.

"We're going to have to do this here," she said softly.

Hank nodded. "I don't think there's any other option."

Jenna closed her eyes, trying to gather all of the strength she possessed, and began the talk with Erin, while they were in between contractions.

"Erin, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but you're getting much closer, and there's still not an ambulance that can get here."

"What are you saying?" Erin asked nervously.

Jenna squeezed her hands again. "I'm saying that you need to prepare yourself for the very big possibility that you're having this baby right here."

"WHAT?!" Erin said, as her nervousness turned to full-on panic. "NO! NO, I'm not having this baby here! I'm having him at the hospital with my doctor and my husband and an epidural! We can't do this here!"

"Yes we can," Hank said quietly, trying to calm not only Erin's fears, but his and Jenna's as well. "I had to help deliver a few babies when I was on patrol, and Jenna has done this six times before. It's not ideal, but we'll make it work."

Erin, incredibly worried about her unborn baby, gripped Jenna's hands as another contraction built, saying "I don't think I can."

Another hour passed, and Hank and Jenna knew Erin was in the last stages of labor. They'd waited as long as they could, and it was time for her to start trying to push before problems began.

They all felt a little relief when their latest call to 911 ended with an ambulance several miles away that would try to get to them before Erin delivered. Jay also called and said he was getting closer to home, but he still wasn't sure he'd make it before their son decided to enter the world.

The 911 dispatcher agreed to stay on the line and help talk everyone through delivering the baby. While adrenaline took over for Hank and Jenna, giving them confidence that everything would turn out fine, Erin wasn't as convinced.

As Jenna tried to talk her through how to start pushing, a tearful Erin said, "I can't do this."

"Yes you can, Sweetie. We're so close."

"I can't," Erin whispered, shaking her head as she tried to stop her tears. "I can't do it. It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

Jenna took Erin's hand. "I know this isn't what you planned, but this is how it's going to happen. You'll do just fine."

As another contraction hit her, Jenna told her to start pushing. Hank slipped behind Erin on the bed, holding her hands and letting her lean against him as she tried to push. As the contraction ended, Jenna looked up at him, and softly said, "I can see the top of his head."

Hank nodded, closing his eyes for a moment, saying a silent prayer that both Erin and the baby would get through this safely.

"I can't do this. I can't do this," Erin said, tears of fear streaming down her face. She was certain she'd never been more afraid in her entire life, not just for herself, but for her unborn son.

"Yes you can," Jenna said, moving to sit next to her, and taking her face in her hands. "You can do this! You are Erin Lindsay, and you have overcome much. You are one of the strongest people I've ever known, and I know you can get this little boy here. Your body already knows how to do this. We've just got to get that brain of yours under control. When this next contraction comes, you're going to push as hard as you can, and we're going to get his head out together, ok? We'll do this together."

Erin nodded. "Ok." She gripped Hank's hands as the next contraction built.

Just before the head delivered, they heard the front door open. "I'm here! Is everyone ok?"

Erin felt a tiny bit of relief as Jay rushed into the room, throwing off his coat and boots as he rushed to join his wife.

"You're here," she said through her tears.

"I'm here," Jay said. "Let's get our son here too."

"Can you do this?" Jenna asked him.

"Stay here with me, but I think I've got this. I've done it before."

"Good," Jenna said, moving over to let Jay take her place.

"Ok babe," Jay said, his eyes meeting Erin's. "Let's have a baby."

[][][][][][][][][][]

"Hi precious boy," Jenna whispered to the sleeping hours-old newborn in her arms. "Your grandpa and I are so happy you're here."

Hank pulled Jenna closer against his side as his other hand softly stroked the cheek of his new grandson. He looked over at the hospital bed where Erin and Jay were both napping, with Emerson curled up at the foot of the bed. Throughout all of the craziness of the birth, the paramedics, and the drive to the hospital, the little girl had managed to stay asleep, leaving all of the adults extremely grateful.

"Can you believe all of this?" Hank asked, still stunned by the events of the last few hours.

Jenna quietly laughed. "I never pictured us helping our daughter deliver her baby in our guest room, but I guess crazier things have happened."

"I don't know what we would've done if you hadn't been there," Hank said, pressing his lips against the side of her head. He tried not to let his mind spiral, but he couldn't fight off the thoughts of all of the things that could've gone wrong.

"You would've figured it out," Jenna said. "All I did was follow the dispatcher's instructions, and then Jay swooped in at the last minute. You said yourself you've delivered babies before, so you would've been fine."

Hank shook his head. "It's just…different when it's your own kid."

"She's fine, babe. Everything is fine. Get rid of those what-ifs in your mind and focus on this perfect little boy."

As they continued to stare at the baby, they heard Emerson finally begin to stir. "Mommy?" she said softly.

Jenna quickly transferred the baby to Hank's arms and scooped up her little girl. "Good morning, baby girl. We have a big surprise for you."

Emerson sleepily blinked at her, looking around the room as she tried to figure out where she was. "Where we are?"

"We are at the hospital. Shhh, Erin and Jay are sleeping, but if you're really quiet, I'll show you the surprise."

Emerson held her finger up to her mouth, copying her mom's shushing signal.

"Baby Parker is finally here!" Jenna said.

Emerson gasped as quietly as she could. "Baby?"

Jenna pointed to the couch where Hank was cradling the baby. Emerson's face lit up, and she held out her arms, leaning toward her dad and her new playmate. Jenna carried her over, taking her place next to Hank as she sat Emerson down in her lap. The little girl leaned over as far as she could, staring at the tiny bundle in her daddy's arms. She smiled as she gently touched Parker's cheek with one of her fingers.

"I like it," she said, looking up at Hank.

Hank chuckled. "You like it?" he asked her.

Emerson nodded. "Mommy, I hold it?"

Jenna laughed as tears came to her eyes. "Him, baby, not it. You have to let me and Daddy help you, but you can hold HIM."

Hank carefully raised his arms, allowing Emerson to crawl into his lap. He then lowered his arms allowing the baby to rest in hands while giving Emerson the feeling that she was cradling him. Jenna pulled out her phone to take pictures of the sweet moments between her baby and the newest member of their family.

They were both surprised at how careful Emerson was being with Parker. She spoke softly to him as she gently touched his face and his hands. Jenna wiped tears when Emerson leaned over and kissed Parker on the head.

"That is the sweetest thing I've ever seen."

They all turned around when they heard Erin's voice. Emerson was thrilled her big sister was awake.

"Ewin! I hold him!"

"You are holding him! He loves you so much, Emmie!"

"I done," Emerson said, holding out her hands to Jenna to help her get down. Hank held Parker up to Jenna so she could safely take him and allow Emerson to crawl back down.

When Emerson was free, she rushed over and climbed into bed next to Erin. She cuddled up to Erin's stomach, just as she had been since Erin first developed a bump. As she softly touched Erin's stomach, they all saw confusion cross her face. Jenna fought back a smile as she waited for her daughter's questions.

Emerson looked back and forth between Erin and the baby. She patted Erin's stomach. "Baby?" she asked as she looked up to Erin's face.

"No Emmie," Erin said, shaking her head. She pointed over at Parker. "The baby is over there. He came out."

Emerson held up her hands. "How?"

All of the adults started laughing. "Baby girl, we'll tell you all about it when you're older," Jenna said, bringing the baby back over to Erin.

Erin cradled both of the little ones, gushing over Parker with Emerson, as Hank joined Jenna at the foot of the bed, pulling her against him as her arms slipped around his waist, while an exhausted Jay continued sleeping. Hank smiled as a tear rolled down his face. Just when he thought life couldn't get any better, a new life was born, adding more joy to their family than he could ever imagine. His baby wasn't the baby of the family anymore, and he was excited about everyone's changing roles in their family.

Their future was looking better than ever.
