Moment of Truth

Erin sat on the bathroom floor, leaning against the tub. The only sounds in the room were the pounding of her heartbeat and the pounding of her husband's feet as he paced the floor in front of her, both amplified by the cramped space.

It would be the longest three minutes of her life.

Her anxiety filled the room, threatening to suffocate her, and her husband was not making it easier, lost in his own thoughts and fears.

"Jay," she said softly, breaking his concentrated strides.

"Yeah?" he said, freezing mid-step in front of her.

"Please stop."

Jay sighed, brushing his hand over his face. "Sorry Er. I'm just…kinda freaking out."

"Me too," Erin said, nervously wringing her hands.

Jay sat down on the edge of the tub, putting his hand on Erin's shoulder. "No matter what it says, we're in this together. Ok?"

Erin looked up, her hand lifting to rest on top of his. "Yeah. We'll be fine."

A few minutes later, Jay's phone alarm sounded, and their eyes met. Jay turned it off, as Erin stood, joining him at the bathroom counter.

"Moment of truth," Jay said, squeezing her hand.

Erin nodded. "Yeah. Moment of truth."

"You said Erin sounded serious on the phone?" Hank asked Jenna, as he buckled Emerson into her car seat.

"She did," Jenna said. "I'm a little worried."

Hank climbed into the driver's seat of the car. "You don't think they are getting a divorce, do you?"

Jenna shrugged. "I…I don't know. They seem happy, but who really knows what goes on in someone's home."

Hank tightly gripped the steering wheel, a million different scenarios running through his head. He'd seen no signs of any kind of marital issues between Erin and Jay, but since he was retired, he didn't see them at the district every day anymore. But surely he'd know if there were problems, wouldn't he?

"If Halstead hurt her, I'm killing him."

Jenna reached over, prying one of his hands from the wheel. "They are adults, Hank," she said gently, cradling his hand between hers. "Whatever it is, they can handle it, and we'll be there to support them however we can."

Hank groaned, saying nothing.

She rolled her eyes at her husband's quiet defiance. "Hank Voight, if you make a scene, you're walking home and sleeping in the car."

When Hank and Jenna arrived at the Halstead home, Erin greeted them at the door, hugging them both. Emerson squealed when she saw her big sister, holding out her hands to be taken from her mom's arms for sister snuggles.

"Ewin!"

Erin held her close, covering her face with kisses. "I missed you so much, Emmie!"

As they followed Erin into the living room where Jay was waiting, Hank and Jenna exchanged an uncomfortable look, both feeling an extreme tension filling the air of the house. Hank suddenly felt nauseous, fearing that maybe his nervousness was warranted. If his daughter and son-in-law were splitting up, it would break his heart, and he would break Halstead's jaw.

Emerson wiggled out of Erin's arms to run into Jay's. The little girl didn't seem to sense the anxiety of the adults, and her innocent excitement momentarily alleviated some of the family's stress.

After a few minutes of playtime with Emerson, Jenna set her daughter up in a corner of the living room with a few toys so the adults would be able to talk. Sensing her husband's increasing agitation, she didn't want to leave his side for very long, needing to get this conversation started before Hank said or did something he would regret.

When Jenna returned to her seat next to Hank, she quietly said, "Erin told me that the two of you have some news. Are you ready to talk about it?"

Erin and Jay looked at each other, silently communicating with their eyes. As Erin's filled with tears, Jay squeezed her hand and quietly asked, "Do you want me to do it?"

Erin shook her head. "No, I'll do it." She couldn't stop the tears that formed as she looked up at Hank.

"Jay and I…we're having a baby."

Hank stared at Erin in shock as Jenna jumped to her feet, rushing over and pulling their daughter into a giant hug.

"Oh my goodness!" Jenna said, tears of joy streaming down her face. "This is the best news." She took Erin's face in her hands. "I am SO happy for you." She reached for one of Jay's hands. "For both of you."

Jay stood up, and Jenna pulled him into their hug. "Thanks Jenna. I'm not going to lie, we're freaking out a little, but we're excited."

Emerson, not understanding the news, but sensing the excitement, rushed over, squealing as she threw her arms around Erin's leg.

As Jenna continued to congratulate and celebrate with Erin and Jay, Hank remained silent. His mind was spinning, trying to comprehend Erin's words.

Pregnant.

His little girl was going to be a mother. A mother.

It was something he'd dreamt about, something he and Camille had dreamt about together. Neither had known if bringing a child into the world was something Erin would ever want to do, wondering if the trauma she'd experienced as a child would hold her back from ever wanting a family of her own. But they wanted it for her. Camille wanted it. Hank wanted it, and he knew that Jenna wanted it.

Now it was happening, and he couldn't be happier.

Hank's thoughts were interrupted when Jenna called his name for the third time. His eyes flew up to meet hers. "Sorry, what?"

"Are you with us, babe?" she asked, trying to keep the mood light while she worried about her husband's response to their daughter's news.

"Yeah, I'm here, I just…wow." He finally looked up at Erin, and the tears that had been pooling in his eyes began to slowly fall. He stood and enveloped Erin in his arms, holding her tight.

Erin's own tears fell against Hank's shoulder, and he held her even tighter when he felt her tears soaking into his shirt.

"I'm so happy for you," he whispered, pressing his lips against the side of her head. When they'd both calmed down a little, Hank cradled her face in his hands. "I'm so happy for you. I can't wait to meet this baby."

"Thank you," Erin said tearfully. "I'm terrified, but I'm happy."

Hank shrugged. "Being a parent is scary, no matter how your children come into your life. But you'll be good at this. It'll be challenging at times, but you've got a great partner, and you'll figure it out." He finally looked at Jay, and, shocking everyone in the room, pulled him into a hug. "Congratulations Jay."

"Thank you Hank," Jay said, wiping his eyes. He and Hank had always had a somewhat difficult relationship, struggling as the two pillar men in Erin's life, but there was a mutual respect between the two of them. Jay had always appreciated Hank's confidence in him as a member of Intelligence, and now appreciated even more Hank's confidence in him as a father. "We're just glad we have you and Jenna to help us figure out how to be parents."

"The most important thing you can do for your kids is to love them and love each other. Everything else…you'll figure out what works for your family. Jen and I will help however we can."

Erin nodded, allowing Hank to pull her into another hug. She closed her eyes as she leaned into her father-figure, grateful for the support of the surrogate parents in her life. While her mind was still spiraling with uncertainties, it helped to know she had someone to lean on.

As they all took their seats, Emerson squeezed in between Erin and Jay, Jenna said, "How far along are you? When did you find out? I need details!"

Erin laughed at Jenna's excitement, as well as the little giggle that slipped out of Emerson, who felt grown up in the middle of the adult conversation.

"I'm not entirely sure how far just yet. It's really early, and we just found out this morning."

"This morning?" Jenna asked.

Erin nodded. "Yeah, I…we were excited and…and nervous, and we needed to talk about it, so that's why we called. I'm going to call my doctor in the morning, and we'll go from there. In the meantime, please keep this quiet, since it's early."

"I assume this means you're going on desk duty immediately?" Hank asked, his eyes darting toward Jay.

"Not yet," Erin said, holding back a smile over Hank's protectiveness. "I'll be careful, but I want to work as long as I am able."

"Erin."

Jenna put her hand on Hank's arms, silencing him. "That's between Detective Lindsay and her sergeant." Hank groaned, and Jenna looked over at Jay, her eyes narrowing as they met his. "And I'm certain her sergeant won't let her put herself or the baby in any kind of danger."

Jay recognized the seriousness in Jenna's words, feeling as though he was being scolded, and he responded, "I'm sure her sergeant will put her on desk duty very soon."

"Jay!" Erin said.

Jay gestured toward Erin's parents. "What else do I say to that?"

Erin turned her gaze back to Hank and Jenna. "We'll work it out, and we'll be safe, I promise." She put her hand on her abdomen, momentarily imagining the changes that would occur over the next few months. "This baby is the most important thing, and we'll do whatever it takes to make sure he or she gets here safely."

As the conversation continued, Hank sat in silence, just observing his daughter and son-in-law. Since Jenna came into his life, his world had turned upside down, a seemingly never-ending cycle of life-altering events; marriage, his daughter's wedding, a new baby, retirement, and now a new grandchild. He was truly in awe that this had become his life, and he was unable to stop a few tears from rolling down his face.

Seeing his tears, Emerson toddled over, climbing into her daddy's lap. He scooped her up, holding her close, and Emerson reached out to touch his face, a concerned look on her own.

"Daddy's fine, Princess," he said, pulling her into a hug. "Daddy is happier than he's ever been."

He truly was happier than he'd ever been. While he knew that the next few months would bring their own unique stressors and concerns, specifically from Erin, as he knew her pregnancy would bring up feelings from her own childhood, he didn't think life could get much better. He was grateful to have Jenna there to hopefully help Erin work through her uncertainties, and he'd be there to support her and Jay however he could. Then in a few months, their newest little blessing would be in their arms.

He couldn't wait.
