Sitting in on the tiny table in the wardroom Kate winced flinching slightly as swain examined her arm. she flinched hissing as the pain vibrated down the whole of her arm causing her to almost cry out as he began wrapping the dressing carefully as he could around the wound.

"Sorry ma'am" he forced a smile adding the tape to keep it in place "that should hold till we get home, but you will need to keep it dry"

"Thanks swain" she sighed going to move

"Ma'am you need a sling" swain said pulling the triangular bandage from the kit bag

"it's fine with the dressing on" she said feeling annoyed

"The sling will help with keeping the dressing out of the way, take the weight off your arm and help keep the wound stable" Swain said

"Swain its fine, it's just a graze," she sighed with frustration wincing slightly as she moved her arm

"It might look that way but the bullet grazed deeper than you think, it's going to need a proper clean and stiches when we get back to base" swain said

"can't you deal with it know I really don't want to go to the hospital" she sighed

"Afraid not ma'am. You need to get it properly checked out, it could have damaged nerves or other tissues" swain smiled "place your arm across your chest for me" he said carefully placing the sling over the arm

She winced as he tucked the bandage under her arm bringing the points around tying them up at the back

"how's that? He asked not too tight?" he asked

"it's fine" she winced trying to hide the pain that was coursing down her arm

"Ma'am?" Swain questioned seeing she was in pain

"I'm fine" she said "so am I done?"

"Yeah. I'll check the dressing later and if you need any painkillers"

"Thanks swain"

"How you feeling X?" Mike asked walking in to the ward room

"I'm Fine" she forced a smile

"Well, we should be home later this evening .so light duties"

"Sir" she said "i guess I am going to go lie down" she said heading out

They arrived back in port on time Walking over the gangway she smiled as Mike walked up to her.

"I'll come to the hospital tonight. As soon as I am done here" Mike said

"There is no need. You heard Swain said it's a superficial wound. And anyway, I need sleep and you'll be otherwise engaged" she said looking over towards the Car where Dr Morrel was being loaded in to"

"Okay then. I guess I will see you tomorrow" he smiled as she stepped on to the quay.

Walking towards the waiting ambulance she turned "Milk chocolate not dark" she smiled before stepping in to the ambulance. she watched as he walked towards the police car where Ursula was.

It took ages in the hospital, after getting her arm scanned, to see if there was any damage to the deeper tissues and nerves which thankfully there wasn't. she then had to wait over an hour for the result and the doctor to come and put the stiches in 6 in total and she still had to wait for her prescription and discharge papers. All she wanted to do was go home and sleep. She was exhausted and feeling the pain now the adrenalin and anaesthetic had worn off

"There you are. It's like a rabbet warren in here" Mike smiled walking in to the little cubical.

"Mike?" she said looking up "what are you doing here"

"I said I would come to the hospital" he smiled placing a box of chocolates on to the bed.

"how's Ursula?" she asked

"okay" he smiled "well as okay as you can be when you have to give up your whole life and disappear" he said "how many stitches did you need"

"six" she said

"Here we are" the nurse walked in "your prescription and there are some extra dressings in there, and I need you signature on these discharge papers" she said holding out a clip board.

Taking the pen, she did her best to sign her name at the bottom.

"All done" the nurse smiled "remember to keep the wound dry and the stitches should dissolve in about 2 weeks but it could take longer for them to fully disappear"

"thanks" Kate said reaching for her sea bag stuffing the prescription and her chocolates in.

"You ready?" Mike said pulling her bag off the bed. "Come on I'll give you a lift"

"it's fine I can get a cab" she said reaching for her bag

"it's just a ride Kate, it's cheaper than a cab" he smiled "and I practically have to go past yours myself"

"fine" she sighed following him out.

Sitting in the car was awkward especially as she had a sling on again, it was uncomfortable with the belt going right across her arm but at least it lifted it off the stitches so it wasn't as painful.

"You, okay?" Mike asked as he pulled out of the hospital carpark

"yeah" she nodded

It didn't take very long for them to drive back to Kates's apartment. And it was just as difficult getting out of the car as it was in, her arm got tangled with the seat belt. Once she was out she walked up the path followed by Mike. Turning she rummaged with her free hand in the front pocket of her bag to find her keys.

Unlocking the door, she walked in just grateful to be home.

"Umm where do you want this" Mike asked indicating to her sea bag.

"You can just dump it there" she pointed to the hall closet "I'll sort it later" she smiled weakly. "do you want a brew before you go?" she asked walking in to the kitchen picking the kettle up of the stand and walking over to the sink before realising filling it up one handed was going to be harder than she thought.

"Let me" Mike said softly taking it from her filling it with ease

"thanks" she said softly.

"so..." Mike began

"don't" she said turning away

"dont what"

"Say what you were going to . I know I messed up with Rick but..."

"i wasn't going to say anything about that, I was just checking If you took sugar I can't remember"

"One, plenty of milk" she smiled

"Here we are" he said carrying over the 2 mugs sitting down next to her

"thanks" she smiled taking it from him.

Looking up at him she felt herself getting lost in his steel eyes like she had done all those years ago. Her breath hitched as he lent across brushing a stray hair that had gotten caught up in her sling. Leaning in he kissed her. Reciprocating the kiss Kate felt herself falling back against the pillows before she realised what was happening.

Pulling away she turned to face away. Her heart and head were in a major conflict her heart although broken was still in love with him, her head saying he will only hurt you again.

"i think you best go" she stammered still trying to process what had just happened

"Kate" he said softly

"People like you always want back the love they gave away" she said turning to look up at him, trying to avoid his eyes so she didn't get sucked back in "i loved you I told you things I never told anyone and you just left"

"Kate" he said trying to reach out "things changed, I have changed"

"I know" she half smiled "but it still doesn't change the fact you left. You broke my heart and I can't let myself go there again it hurts too much"

"Kate" he said

"Please just go." she said

"i guess I will see you back on Hammersley then" he said softly picking up his jacket

Hearing the door close she tried to hold back the tears but couldn't stop them falling her head and heart were locked in a battle and she was caught in the crossfire. She just wanted them to agree and allow her to move on but even her mind somewhere in the back still loved him.
