Chapter 1:
This is an edit/rewrite of a previous story that needed some love and revamping. I'm keeping the plot ~generally the same, but better.
BPOV:
"Hey Ally. Where's Rose?" Rosalie, my sister, had gone on a date four hours ago. They only went to the movies, so she should've been home by now. The torrential downpour was making our lights flicker on and off… I can only imagine what was happening at the theater.
Alice rolled her eyes. "I don't know, Bella, maybe she was just-"
The door swung open, revealing a very wet, rumpled Rose. Her usually soft, golden hair clung to her like a wet dog. If we're being honest, she kind of smelled like one, too. Her light pink blouse clung to her, revealing her black lacy bra.
"I literally do not want to hear a single word until I'm out of that damn shower." Rose turned on her heel dramatically, spraying us with rain, and stormed down the hall to her room. As soon as she was gone, Alice and I busted out laughing.
"Well I guess that answers that question," I said quietly, hoping Rose wouldn't hear. Alice was already chattering away, so I settled into the corner chair with my Kindle. Almost immediately, I was distracted by the bright red Jeep pulling up to the front of our building. This was pretty supremely unexpected, as we were Jake's only tenants for the last year, although we were in a four-unit house. A gigantic, gorgeous lumberjack of a man stepped out of the driver's side. He was the biggest man that I had ever seen… he looked intimidating. That is, until he smiled at something at the back of the car. He immediately looked kind of cute and cuddly. The longer I stared, the more I thought his curly hair made him look like a teddy bear. I couldn't see what he was smiling at, I only saw the rough outline of another man.
"Alice?" She was in the kitchen making brownies. Again. This was her third batch. Today. I mean how many brownies can three girls eat?
"Yep?" She was jumping around, singing to In the Air by Flo Rida. I knew if I didn't interrupt, it would launch into a full twerk session.
I chewed my bottom lip, about three seconds away from drooling. "What is with you and the early 2000's club hits? Did Jacob say that two new guys were moving in? Because I see two guys outside with a Jeep." As soon as the word guys was out of my mouth she was standing next to me.
She squealed. "First of all, I can't help it. Music has never been catchier. Second, YES! But he said that there were three. Look how adorable that big one is! He's like a majorly big teddy bear!"
I sighed. Here we go. I loved my best friends, but sometimes the high highs and low lows of dating in college, and all the dramatic relationships took a toll on me. I mostly keep to myself when it comes to dating, but try to be there as much as I can for my girls. That being said, it was hard feeling an almost constant touch of loneliness and still be supportive of their tumultuous love lives. As expected, Alice went boy crazy for the next few minutes, at least until Rose walked out of her room.
"Don't even ask me what happened. I really, really don't want to talk about it." She ruffled her hair - clearly still frustrated. "ALEXA. TURN IT OFF." I looked at her, smiling just a little. The worst thing to do when Rose was ~in a mood~ was laugh at her. She eyed Alice warily. "Now what are you squealing about Alice?" This brought on a whole new round of squeals. Rose looked at me in confusion, I just pointed out the window.
The biggest grin that I had ever seen on Rose's face spread across it then. "Are those the new guys that Jake was talking about? Because that big guy is hot. I mean, shit. That flannel is working hard. Look at those shoulders."
I laughed at Rose's abrupt mood change. All it took was a hot guy hauling cube, should've known. We settled into quiet sighs, watching him unload boxes onto the curb for a few seconds, sighing in unison as he flexed with the effort. "Yeah, we think that's who it is. Let's just hope there's three, and the huge bulking muscles are a shared family gene," I giggled.
Alice grinned at this. "Amen. Well, we should take them their welcome brownies soon. Hey Rose, go grab the phone, will you?" That explains the brownies.
Alice handed me the phone. "Here Bells, call Jake. Ask him which unit the noobs have, okay?" I nodded my head at her in recognition. I was still trying to catch a glimpse of the other mysterious person. All I saw was a flash of bronze. Hmph.
"What's shakin', bacon," Jake lazily called into the phone. I could hear pots and pans clanging in the background, and assumed Miss Leah was on another cooking show bender.
"Wow, Jake. You actually sound professional!"
We both laughed, he was everything but. "Thanks a lot, Bells. Some best friend you are." I laughed again.
"Woah, you better slow down with that best friend talk, if my dad ever heard you replaced him with his daughter, he'd lose his mind," I shot back, smiling. "Anyway, I was wondering what unit the new guys are moving into. Alice made them some welcome brownies."
Rose and Alice were now leaning all the way out the window, open-mouth gaping at our new neighbor. I heard papers rustling on his end. "Let me see… oh. Well they're 607, right across the hall from you guys. That's not going to be a problem, is it?"
"Oh, no, not at all. Thanks, Jake! See you later!" I hung up before he could respond to me and returned to the window. "Well, ladies, I have good news and I have bad news. Good news, Jake says they're moving in right across the hall, not upstairs. Bad news, they're moving right across the hall and my room is closest to the door, which means I get to call dibs!"
