Lucy tried to steady her breathing; she had meant what she had said earlier to Wyatt: Ever since she had stepped into the Lifeboat, she felt as if she were drowning. She hated that feeling. She had no control and now she was surrounded by Nazis and she was afraid that she would not be able to hold her nerve long enough. Wyatt was trained for this. He was at ease even when surrounded by the enemy, but Lucy was not like that. Every single emotion she felt, it showed on her face, at least that was what Amy had always said to her.
Wyatt had told her to focus on what she was fighting for and, that way, she would find her way through this feeling, but she needed to discover it for herself first. With shaking hands, she smoothed down her dress and tried to steady her breathing; she could feel and hear it, as well as hearing her own heart pounding in her chest. She did not speak German. Wyatt did, so she was feeling helpless, not to mention the fact that she was surrounded by Nazis.
"May I have this dance, ma'am?" Lucy turned around to see Wyatt, handsome and steady as ever, with his bright, blue eyes sparkling.
Lucy shook her head, but she was unable to speak for a while. Her words were stuck in her throat. Wyatt was watching her and he knew that if she kept acting this way, they could be discovered and killed. "I-I don't think now is a good time to dance." Lucy finally whispered, with her brown eyes full of fear and anxiety.
Every watchful of people and surroundings, Wyatt stepped closer and took hold of her hand as he said, "We're going to dance together and you're going to steady yourself. Lucy, you have to." He smiled, then asked, in German, "Ma'am, please may I have this dance?" Lucy just nodded and the two of them made their way to the dance floor.
A slow song was playing. Wyatt placed his hands of Lucy's hips and she put her arms around his neck and they started to sway together, in time, but Lucy was still feeling as if she was going to throw up. Her throat was so dry. She couldn't look at Wyatt, because her eyes were moving around, frantically. She felt as if she were trapped under water, drowning, even when Wyatt was holding her so close. Wyatt could see her eyes and he knew that she needed to calm down, to handle her fear. If she didn't, their mission would fail.
He rubbed his hands against her waist gently as a way of earning her attention and when her brown eyes finally meet his blue ones, he looked into them. He held her gaze in a way that she knew that she would understand. It was a look he hadn't given a woman since Jessica, but Lucy needed this. He smiled slightly and when he spoke Lucy felt her cheeks blush. His Texan accent was amazing. Smiling and looking into her eyes, Wyatt whispered, "Lucy, look at me and breathe, okay? Can you do that? Can you feel my arms around your waist?" Lucy just nodded. "Okay, Lucy, keep looking at me. Relax. Look at me. Pretend like you're just with me. We're just a man and a woman dancing together. Keep your focus on me, Lucy, all the time."
Lucy did as she was told and looking into Wyatt's eyes was not a hard task. They were blue and beautiful. She had noticed that the first time they had met. Gradually, Lucy felt herself relax into dancing with Wyatt and he smiled at her and whispered in her ear, "You're doing good, ma'am."
As they were dancing, they stared into each other eyes, with Lucy's eyes never leaving Wyatt's and their bodies were dancing together in perfect harmony. Lucy was very aware of how close Wyatt's mouth was to hers and she could feel his hands on her waist. Wyatt could almost read Lucy's mind, because her eyes were an open book, but he couldn't think about that. His wife had died and it had been his fault. He swallowed, then forced a smile and looked back into Lucy's eyes. Slowly, Lucy looked away and rested her head on his shoulder as they continued to dance and she closed her eyes. She didn't understand it, but she wanted to savor this moment, strange as it seemed. Wyatt swallowed again and inhaled, before continuing dancing, holding Lucy close to him. He wished that it really were just him and Lucy dancing.
Lucy and Wyatt's dance in the castle that night only lasted for a couple of minutes, but it was a memory the two of them treasured, stored away in their minds, refusing to accept their attraction because of the circumstances, but it was still there. It was a moment that lasted for them, even if it had been pretend.
