One shot. Takes place during 3x11, what happens when Alex decides to hand deliver Maggie's passport instead of mailing it to her?

Taking a deep breath Alex got out of the cab, looking at the building in front of her. She grabbed her crutches and climbed onto the sidewalk. She stared at the address and compared it to the one on her phone, 13 Flower Street, yup she was at the right place. She hobbled her way up to the stoop and looked at the keypad directory. She took another deep breath and dialed in the code for apartment 6. She waited with bated breath as she heard the buzz. "Yea," Alex's breathe caught for a moment, hearing her voice for the first time in months. "Hello?"

"Uh...hi...Maggie, it's Alex," she managed to awkwardly get out. After a few seconds she heard a buzz at the door to let her in.

Maggie was shocked to hear Alex's voice come through the intercom, even before she said her name she knew it was her. As soon as she awkwardly stuttered there was a ping at Maggie's heart and she was hit with a slight wave of panic. She wasn't prepared to see Alex. Luckily she had just cleaned the apartment, wanting everything to be in order before she left for her trip. Hearing a knock at the door, she quickly looked in the mirror, 'as good as it's gonna get in the next 5 seconds' she thought to herself before making her way over to the door. Releasing a deep breath she opened it, her heart pounding faster than it had in months. Alex greeted her with a sad smile, which Maggie met with her own. They stared at each other for a moment, both thinking how good it was to see the other. Maggie noticed the crutches,"come in." Once Alex was inside she closed the door and turned around to face her. "Here, sit down," Maggie said breaking the awkward silence that had fallen over the room.

Alex made her way over to the couch with Maggie's help, as soon as she felt her hand on her back her body was filled with warmth. It was like she had been freezing for months and Maggie's touch suddenly heated her. They sat there in silence for a few minutes, neither of them knowing what to say. Alex looking around the apartment, Maggie reading Alex's cast wondering what happened. "I like your place," Alex said, "it's really nice."

"Thanks," Maggie replied softly. "Alex, what are you-"

"Oh, here. I brought you this," Alex said cutting Maggie off handing her her passport.

Maggie took it from Alex, with a light confusion on her face, "thanks, you could have mailed it." She didn't mean for the words to come out so abrasive, but she couldn't help it. She finally felt like she was starting to heal and move on from Alex, but here she was showing up on her doorstep.

"Yea, I just thought...well...I don't know what I thought...I should go," Alex said grabbing her crutches.

Maggie reached over, putting her hands on Alex's to stop her, "no, it's fine. You're here now, I just wasn't expecting it." She pulled away and shifted uncomfortably. They sat in silence again for a few minutes, both trying to force their brains to say something, anything...well not anything. Neither of them wanted to say anything alluding to their past relationship. Maggie looked at Alex's cast again, "so what happened?" She asked gesturing to Alex's leg.

"You should see the other guy," Alex joked causing a genuine smile to form on Maggie's face, dimples and all. Alex paused, taking it in, she missed that face, that smile. Catching herself staring she blinked and looked down at her leg, "yea, funny story. Fighting Alien's can cause broken bones," she laughed lightly then continued. "We were trying to catch Reign, chain her down, but it back fired. She swung the chain like a whip and got me."

"Ouch," Maggie said imagining the scene.

"It's all good though, getting used to the crutches. Plus it's pretty cool having a cast," she said looking at the names on display and smiled, "I can look down and be reminded at any time of the people who love me."

Maggie had a sad smile listening as she talked about her cast. It hurt hearing Alex talk about the people who loved her and not being included. The fact was she did love Alex, although she sometimes wished she didn't. It would make this healing thing go a lot better. She looked down at the fabric on the couch and started fiddling with a piece of string sticking up.

Alex looked up at Maggie, wanting to say something, but her brain still failing her with words. She glanced at the passport that was now sitting on the coffee table, then back to Maggie, "where are you going?"

"What?" Maggie asked pulling herself out of the trance she was in, realizing Alex was asking about her up coming trip. "Oh, Paris," she said looking up at Alex. "Someone at the station suggested I take a trip to clear my head, help me get centered, so I am."

Alex nodded, understanding that feeling. It was why Kara took her home after the breakup. Unfortunately Maggie didn't have anywhere like that to escape to.

Maggie looked up at Alex again and sighed, "look Alex, I don't know what you expected by coming here, but I...I just, I don't know."

Honestly, Alex didn't know either. She knew Maggie didn't want to see her, otherwise she would just stopped over to get her passport herself instead of asking Alex to mail it. But she couldn't help it, Alex missed her so much. She took a deep breath and replied, looking down at the ground and avoiding eye contact "I don't actually know either...I just...when I saw that you texted I thought it was about us, I guess, but it wasn't...and I just..." she paused looking up into Maggie's eyes, "I miss you."

Maggie closed her eyes and looked away. She didn't know what to say back. She stood up for a moment and walked toward the window, feeling like she needed some space from Alex. Of course she missed Alex too, so much that she was leaving the country to try and stop. She took a breath and turned around, trying to keep her anger her down, "you came over here just to tell me that?" Alex shifted, not expecting such a hostile response. Maggie scoffed and shook her head. "You don't think I miss you? That it doesn't kill me knowing that I can't just show up at your place and see you...but nothing has changed Alex. You still want to be a mom and I don't." Maggie folded her arms looking at Alex on the couch.

Alex knew she was right, nothing had changed. It's not like they broke up over something crazy that happened and she could fix it, they wanted different things out of life. There was so much tension in the room, Alex took another deep breath before patting the couch next to her for Maggie to come back. Normally she would walk over to where she was, but with a broken leg that was the more difficult route. Maggie released her arms, closed her eyes for a moment and took another breath before heading back to the couch to sit with Alex. "I know that nothing has changed," Alex said reaching for Maggie's hand, "except for the fact that I have seen my life without you and I don't like it." She looked from their hands up to Maggie, noticing the pain in her eyes. "Can't we just try again and see what happens?"

Maggie closed her eyes, wishing it were that simple, "Alex," she said opening them, seeing the sadness on the face of the woman in front of her, "we both know it doesn't work like that. This isn't just a problem that will go away."

Alex nodded taking her hand out of Maggie's fidgeting with the edge of her hoodie sleeve. "Well what if we don't have kids...I think I could be ok with that."

"Alex..."

"No, really, it's fine, I don't have to-"

"We both know you want to be a mom, and I don't want to stop that. You are going to be an amazing mom one day...and even if you say you're ok with it now, there will always be apart of you that resents me for taking that dream away from you."

Alex shook her head to disagree, but seeing the look on Maggie's face she knew she was right. So there they were back to where they stared. Both looking down, not knowing what to say to the other, awkward tension in the air.

"Why don't you want to be a mom?" Alex asked looking back toward Maggie.

Maggie's head shot to look at Alex not expecting the question, "Alex-"

"No come on, you owe me at least this.

Maggie nodded, taking a deep breath, "I just never really saw myself as a mom. I didn't have siblings to take care of or little cousins. It's always just been me. I've been taking care of myself for so long...I guess I've just autopiloted into survival mode. I don't know if I would even know how to take care of anyone else." Maggie paused for a moment, looking at Alex. She felt so raw. She had never really thought about why she didn't want kids. She just knew that she didn't...now she was realizing it wasn't necessarily about not wanting them, but more about the fear of not knowing how to take care them. "Im so scared im going to be like them," Maggie managed to say before tears started welling in her eyes. Alex nodded pulling Maggie into her arms as she began to cry.

Alex held her tightly as she cried, waiting until her breathing had become more normal to say "I wish you would have told me all this before..."

"Why? It's not like it would have changed anything?" Maggie said softly.

Alex pulled away slightly, "it could have," Maggie looked up, tears still in her eyes, confusion on her face. "It helps to understand where you're coming from. Maggie I know things were bad for you growing up, but I don't think I always realize all the parts of you it's affected. And that's ok. Because you're pretty damn amazing just the way you are."Maggie's smiled, a tear sliding down her cheek as she listed to Alex. Alex looked deep into Maggie's eyes and knew what she was about to say may back fire, but she had to say it. It's the one thing she's been sure about in months, "I love you Maggie Sawyer. I want you back in my life, I want to spend my life with you..."

"Alex-"

"No, I won't kid myself and be hopeful that one day you'll change your mind. If you do that will just make our lives together even more amazing, but Maggie, if you don't that's ok too. I don't think I realized how much I truly missed you until you were in my arms. Holding you again is the first time I have felt whole in months. I can't keep living without you."

The tears were now falling from both of their eyes, Maggie smiled leaning up to kiss Alex. It was an electric kiss. They both immediately felt like life had been breathed back into them. When they pulled apart they just looked at each other for a moment. "I love you too Danvers," Maggie said leaning in & kissing Alex again softly. "I can't make any promises...but maybe one day..."

Alex smiled, "I can live with maybe."

They sat together a few minutes getting their emotions in check, Maggie smiled looking at Alex's leg again, "can I sign your cast?"

Alex's smile brightened, "well I don't know, you gotta pretty special to get on this thing," she joked as Maggie got up to get a marker.

She hit her arm playfully sitting back down before taking the cap off of the marker and signing. She sat back, resting in Alex's arms again, both girls smiling at what Maggie had written, 'Ride or Die, xo Maggie'.
