Being a doctor at Arkham Asylum was always interesting. Not a psychiatrist mind you, a doctor of the body not the mind. The prisoners often got into scuffles and some of the guards were far too rough with them. Also whenever Batman brought them directly to the asylum they were more than battered and bruised.

I had seen everyone, almost everyone. Some of them I didn't have the clearance to treat. So, I had tended to Penguin, Two-face, Riddler and even Scarecrow, an old colleague of mine. There were other "big names" that I had come across but in this Asylum that was bound to happen.

When I wasn't doing my best to keep bones of these criminals becoming irreparable breaks I was either doing paperwork or treating my long term patients. Most were just here for therapy but some needed physical care and one of those people was Harvey Dent. Or should I say, two of those people were Harvey Two-face.

He had rejected any proper care for his burns when he first got them and that didn't change now. Although I had managed to get him to have some treatment to avoid the high risk of infection. He had had infections before and that had him in my ward for longer than anyone would have liked. Although he had been surprisingly pleasant. He hadn't at first, being the most foul I had ever encountered and at first I thought it was because of pain, but it had turned out they confiscated his coin. As soon as I found that out I convinced them to give it back. Taking it and giving it back to him myself and he was oddly quiet about it, even smiling as he turned over his precious coin before flipping it, looking at it land on heads and then letting me treat him properly. Since then he had been nothing but nice towards me.

Nice might be too strong a word. Tolerant is more accurate. Even his Two-Face side had become warmer towards me. I think it also helped that I never treated them as the criminals they are and instead just as someone who needed medical attention. Was probably a nice change from all the name calling and roughhousing.

Harvey was waiting for me now, sitting cuffed on a ward bed with four guards around him, guns holstered but ready as they waited for me to come over. Harvey watched me as I approached, giving them all a smile as I came close.

'Thank you, gentleman.' I nodded to them and they hesitantly left, keeping an eye on things further down the room. We had also found that he would refuse treatment if they were looming over us, so we had compromised and managed to get them to stand down and keep an eye on things from afar. I also had a panic button on me, warning them of if I was attacked. But overall I just felt safe around Dent, probably a stupid thing getting so comfortable around him but here we are.

'Doc.' Two-face greeted with a nod.

'Two-face.' I said back with a nod and then smiled as I looked down at him. He was still nearly as tall as I when he was sitting down. 'How are you both today?'

'Sick of this place.' Two-face growled.

'Aren't we all?' I grinned and he smirked. 'Alright, let me look at you.' He sat still as I turned his head to get a good look at the healing burns. Years ago this happened to him but his lack of treatment had made this a long process. He flinched a little as I gently touched a particularly difficult area. 'Sorry.' I muttered not liking the fact that he was in pain. He flinched away again, leaning back and I hesitated. Lowering my hands away from the burns I leaned forward, taking to looking over them instead of getting a closer look. 'How is the ointment I prescribed? No side effects?'

'It's fine.' Two-face said. Gingerly I placed a finger on his chin, tilting the burned side towards me a little more. He did as directed as I took a half step closer to get a better look. All in all his burned side seemed in relatively good health. The ointment was indeed doing its job and the once weeping and painful looking burns were healing over. He would forever be scarred without skin grafting but they would both forever deny that option.

He didn't flinch away this time, nor did he lean back as I entered his personal space. His hands were in his lap, cuffed together and I felt a tug at my doctors coat.

'You have a button loose.' Harvey said, pulling my eyes from his burns and down at the button on a single thread that was now held between his fingers.

'So I do.' I turned my attention back to his burns, his eyes still cast down at the button that he tugged gently again. 'Are you trying to unbutton me?' I said with a smirk, probably not the best idea to flirt with an inmate. He laughed, clenching the button and yanking it sharply. The thread snapped, the smooth button now in his hands as he ran his fingers over it.

'And if we were?' Two-face practically purred, sending a shiver down my spine.

'You say that as if you haven't already taken it off.' I said, trying my best not to show him how flustered he had managed to make me feel. I removed my hand from his chin, having checked him over and finding that he had been doing as I said and kept his burns clean and applied the relevant amount of salve to them. 'Everything is fine here. I just need to see your torso and arm.' He smirked, I knew full well that Two-face was now in charge.

'Who's unbuttoning who now?' He brought his cuffed hands to his prison jumpsuit, still holding my button in his fingers as he pulled open his clothing and revealed his upper body. Sleeves falling down to his elbows. It was only the top half of his torso that was burned. The first time I had seen the full extent of his injury I hadn't expected it to only be his torso. For some reason everyone assumed that the entirety of his half had been burned.

I ignored his eyes best I could as he watched me bring slightly shaking hands towards him to check him over. That smirk still plastered on his face's. I didn't know what was wrong with me, for some reason this time he had made me blush and I was suddenly very aware of how close I was to him. I had checked over him so many times and nothing, but something had changed. I sighed, hoping I wasn't becoming the next Harley Quinn.

Everything seemed fine, they had been applying the ointment as much as I had suggested. His burns weren't quite as aggressive as they used to be. Satisfied and clearing my throat I pulled the rough clothing back up and over his shoulders. He made no move to button himself back up, instead turned my own white button over and over, feeling the smoothness of the plastic on the pads of his fingers. His eyes still trained on me as I pulled the gloves off and gave a weak smile.

'You're all fine.' I managed out and he huffed a single laugh.

'You don't seem to be.' He drawled suggestively.

'I'm fine.' I tried my best to sound as casual as possible, this time holding his gaze and that smirk had returned. He slowly rose, standing close, forcing me to take a slight step back and tilt my head to look up at him. I swallowed as he brought his hands up and slowly buttoned himself back up.

'Are you sure?' He said, raising his brow.

I squeaked a 'Mmm hmm' and he smiled as he reached the last button. 'Am I going to get my button back?' His smile widened as his hand reached into his pocket, pulling out the coin and flipping it. He caught it expertly and rested it on the back of his hand, his other hiding the result. Finally he moved his hand away, both of us glancing at it. Tails. Or the charred side of the double headed coin if you wanted to be pedantic.

'Sorry.' He grinned with a shrug. He wasn't sorry at all as he pocketed his coin, along with my button. I saw his smile fall and the aggression return to him. Only then had I realised that even with Two-face in control he had been rather calm. Now that all changed, his demeanour stiffened and the flash of hatred crossed over him. Venomous eyes falling to the now approaching guards.

I took another step back, maintaining a far more professional approach that I should never have dropped in the first place. 'You still using the eyedrops?' I asked sounding more confident than I felt and he nodded. 'Good, until next time.'

'Come on, Dent.' One of the guards said tiredly, motioning for him to follow them back to his cell. He flashed one more smirk at me before complying and returning with the four guards. I heard him growl a threat as one grabbed his arm to keep him moving and shook my head. How ridiculous of me to become a little smitten and have that criminal make me blush. Maybe I need a psychiatrist.

It was no longer surprising how quickly things can change for them. One moment they were flirting with the doctor and the next the Asylum had fallen to Joker and his chaos. They hadn't even reached their cell before the breakout. Two-face had caught the guards by surprise during the panic. Having disarmed and immediately killed the one closest. The element of surprise still an advantage as he took the second closest guard hostage.

After some negotiation the guards ended up dead. No coin needed in that decision. It was time to break out. And yet after taking the keys to the cuffs, their guns and ammo and their key-cards Harvey didn't move. Staying put for a few moments, purely hesitating.

'What are you waiting for? The clown has given us the chance we need.' Two-face asked him, eager to get going.

'What if she's in danger?' Harvey replied quietly.

'Not this, we don't need her!' Two-face urged him. Not wanting them to fail an escape for some woman.

'It's not about needing her, Two-face...' Harvey trailed off. He knew Two-face was right, they didn't need her and they should just work on escaping as planned. But what if she was hurt? She would surely be attacked if found and the guards were either corrupt or useless. An unsafe area for a woman, for anyone.

Two-face grunted in frustration, his other half had gone soft for their doctor. Being tethered to such an emotional idiot was infuriating for him. It's not like he hated the doctor himself, he just didn't trust her and he was just trying to protect them both, protect Harvey like he had always done. But the idiot was smitten, had he forgotten what their ex-wife was like? She never loved Two-face, and this doctor would be no different especially now that he was there alongside Harvey.

But that flicker of doubt was there. Two-face had shamelessly flirted with her and she had reacted in a way neither of them had expected. Two-face had always believed that perhaps she would be fond of Harvey, but she would never accept him. But the way she had become so flustered when Two-face had taken over, perhaps she could? Harvey knew it too. He was there after all. That didn't mean Two-face had to admit that he did in fact like her too.

Two-face was weighing up his own options, either drag along his other half who would whine and protest the entire time, or just find the damn Doctor for him and then get off this island. He couldn't decide, so of course the coin would.

'Fine.' He grumbled and Harvey almost grinned. 'But! We let the coin decide.' That ghost of a grin faded as Two-face pulled out the coin and flicked it into the air. Harvey held his breath, nervous about the outcome. The burnt hand caught it expertly but hesitated to open up his palm, finally he did so and Two-face was silent while Harvey almost let out an uncharacteristic cheer.

Instead he smiled rather smugly and turned them on their heel before heading back to the Medical facility.

'Boss!' One of their men called out. Turning he spotted them all behind bars, hopefully looking towards their boss to let them out. Two-face grinned, their plan could still go ahead. Without hesitating they unlocked the cells.

'Get to the docks, the plan goes ahead. We'll meet you there.' Two-face growled out and their men smiled and cheered as they were released.

'Where you going boss?' One of them asked bravely. He knew the plan and this meeting them there was a significant change.

'We've got to get something first.' Harvey said, not giving his thugs another word as they made their way out of their cells to fulfil their role in the break out. Remain under the radar, don't cause too much trouble and maybe, just maybe they will be overlooked. Batman was here, the clown had openly taunted him. They hoped that the bat would be too occupied with him to even notice them slipping away. Two-face just hoped this little detour wouldn't ruin their escape plan.

While his men split off to get to the docks and contact the others across the water to escape Harvey Two-face made for the building opposite, back to the medical facility where his doctor was.

There were a few joker thugs inside the building talking amongst themselves as they casually walked through the decimated halls.

'So why does Joker want us to keep the doctors?'

'Don't you ever listen you numbnuts? Hostages.' The thug said, exasperated.

'Oh yeah.' The man grumbled. Two-face growled, she was indeed in danger. 'Can we like, ya know?' He asked and Harvey watched round the corner, listening in as the other tilted his head.

'Can we what?'

'Have a little fun with 'em?' He grinned as the other gave a nonchalant shrug.

'As long as you don't kill 'em, be my guest.'

Harvey held two guns and shot two perfectly placed bullets into their skulls. The clang of gunfire rattling through the halls. Neither cared, only glad they were dead. He picked up his pace and jogged down the halls. Knowing the way he found the now empty ward that he was in not an hour earlier. How quickly things change.

At first glance there didn't seem to be soul within the ward, but the sharp scream of a woman and the laughs of men echoed through. Piercing through his chest. He had never heard her scream before but he recognised it immediately. Her door clattered open, followed by her crawling form being held up by a fistful of her hair. A jeering joker thug threw her forward. Her knees smashing against the floor as a cry of pain left her. She had blood running down her temple, hands shaking violently as she moved to her back and scrambled away from the five men coming towards her.

Two-face took over entirely, guns raised and firing immediately. The one that had thrown her was now dead upon the floor. She had jumped and whipped round at the one that had become her saviour. Dent saw her surprise upon seeing him but also saw a slight flash of relief within her terror. She curled up in a ball as he fired again. Another thug getting hit while the others dove out the way and behind beds for cover.

Dent ceased fire, placing one gun in his belt and holding his hand out towards her. She looked up at him again, scrambling to her feet and almost slipping on the shiny floor. Tears tracked down her cheeks as a sob left her. Then she did something neither of them expected. She threw her arms around their neck, wrapping herself around him in a tight hug of relief. Burying her face into their neck as she clung to him. They stood there in shock for a moment before Harvey brought his arm around her back, holding her close and feeling her shake with fear as she blinked away her tears and forced herself to stop crying.

The three remaining thugs peaked over their cover, looking to each other with shock as they saw the doctor hugging Harvey Two-face.

'Uh... Mr Face, uh, Dent... Joker wants the Doctors.' One of them stuttered out.

'This one's ours.' Two-Face spat out before firing a warning shot just over his head. The three of them ducked. Mouthing to each other the question of "what do we do now?" followed by clueless shrugs. She jumped at the loud gun and buried her face deeper into the fabric. Smearing her already ruined makeup over his clothing. She didn't care, just wanted to be rid of this place. 'You follow us, you die.' He warned them and she lessened her grip on him.

She looked up at them both, their eyes darting down at her briefly and she nodded, lying to herself and them both that she was okay. His arm reluctantly slipped away from her but found her hand and she clung to it tightly. Glancing back at the scene they had saved her from and averting her eyes immediately as she saw the bodies, their blood slowly seeping out across the white floor.

He backed away, tugging her along to follow him as his gun stayed raised threateningly at them all. The gun was only lowered once they were out of the ward. The doors shutting behind them and he briefly turned to her fully. 'Are you alright?' Harvey asked her and she swallowed, tears threatening to well up.

'Yeah. I'll be okay.' She weakly got out and neither seemed convinced but there was no time to linger. With his hand still in hers he pulled her away from the ward. Brisk steps taking them down the halls. She struggled to match his long strides, stumbling a little here and there and he showed no signs of slowing down. Harvey and Two-face too eager to get going and escape, all while keeping her safe. 'Where are we going?' She asked, voice a little shaky.

'We are getting off this island.' He stated plainly and she sucked in a breath.

'We as in the three of us or just you two?' He stopped in his tracks and she jumped a little as he turned and loomed over her.

'Would you rather stay here?' He snarled a little and she felt the nerves soar through her.

'N- no. I'm just a little surprised you came after me.' She sucked in a breath, forcing the tears to not fall. 'Thank you, for saving me from them.' For once neither Harvey nor Two-face knew what to say, so instead they turned from her, hand still in hers as he walked away, bringing her along with them as they now silently walked down the hall.

With her free hand she wiped away the blood that now spilled over her eye, casting red across her skin and into her hair. She imagined she looked as bad as she felt. Then she saw the two bodies. More men loyal to Joker and dead on the floor. She glanced at Harvey who simply guided her around them, she knew then that he had killed them. And although he had saved her she reminded herself that he was a criminal, a murderer and could easily to the same to her. She just didn't want to believe it, she wanted to feel safe with him, despite his atrocities and given the current situation she really did feel safe as he brought her away from the bodies and out into the open air.

She sucked in a breath, grateful for the cold biting air that filled her lungs. In that moment she realised just how claustrophobic she had felt inside the medical facility once they burst in an attacked her. She also realised just how dizzy she was beginning to feel as the adrenaline began to wear off and the throb of pain pulsed through her head. The harsh yellow lights of the lamps dotted around hurting her eyes.

She cast her head down, bringing her hand to her head and applying a little pressure. Harvey noticed and urged at Two-face that they had to pick up the pace. He simply snarled back that he should stop stopping then and get a move on.

At the first step down she swayed a little, tightening her grip on his hand as she carefully followed him, while still trying to keep up with his long legs. They had to keep to the shadows, not wanting to take a direct route to the docks nearby. Dent looked over and saw his men milling on the run down docks, ready to pull close the boat that was closing in. His men had not disappointed. Still they had to be careful, with Joker thugs running around and her injured state that had her swaying heavier with each step.

With each rustle and swoop that was heard, Harvey couldn't help but look around a little frantically, hoping that Batman would not come across them, would not interfere. Finally they were within earshot of the dock and she had slowed down significantly, head bowed as blood dripped down her face.

'Harvey...' She mumbled out as she leaned against him, her grip on his hand loosening.

He caught her, trying to keep her upright as he struggled to keep her stable and hold his gun. 'Dave!' He called out over to his henchmen. The man in question turned, eyes going wide as he forced his feet to take him over to his boss. 'Take this.' He handed the henchman the gun as soon as he was close enough. The man took it and watched as Harvey Dent hoisted the woman up into his arms, one arm under her back the other under her legs as she struggled to keep awake.

She leaned her head against his chest, eyes drooping. 'Sorry.' She muttered out, feeling more than useless as he carried her over to the dock. Dave was the first to climb into the boat, placing the gun down and holding his arms out to take the woman. Dent reluctantly handed her over before climbing in after. The rest of his henchmen following suit as he swiftly took her from Dave's arms again and silently nestled her down. They could tell that their henchmen were desperate to know why their boss had brought along a doctor, an injured one at that, but none had the balls to ask. Harvey Two-face wasn't the type to take kindly to those imposing on his business.

So instead they started up the engine and sped away across the water, hoping to reach the city as soon as possible and hide away at one of their many safehouses. A long time coming this escape, and the Joker had made it easier than ever for them. Instead of the long drawn out overly complicated prison break, they just walked out. Easier than they had ever dreamed.

But this tag along was not anticipated. Harvey sticking beside her as she lay against him, his voice too low for any of them to hear as he spoke to her. This was an odd development indeed.

'We will get you to safety.' Harvey was whispering to her as her eyes stared back up at him, dropping and blurry. Dave was careful to not stare, but couldn't help but notice the growing pool of blood on the floor from her head injury. He swallowed, hoping not to offend either side of his boss as he took out a first aid kit and brought it over.

Dent eyed him threateningly as he pulled out some supplies and offered them to Dent. 'Uh. If you're wanting to keep her alive, then apply pressure here.' He pointed to the open wound and at first they hesitated. Dave shifting his weight, worried he had fucked up. But a burned hand took hold of the supplies, dousing the wound to clean it before using the gauze to be between his hand and her head as he applied the pressure. Dent nodded his thanks, the most gratitude Dave would get from him and the henchmen let out a breath, stepping away and leaving Dent to it.

My head hurt, incredible numbing pain followed by an intense headache. When they had burst into my office they had slammed my head into the corner of my desk. Less than ideal. The doctor side of me knew what had to be done to treat myself, but the circumstances of my injury did not allow for any treatment. I had felt the skin break and the warm sticky blood trickle down with increasing rapidity as time went on, as they grabbed my hair and threatened to do ghastly things to me before promising to hand me over to the Joker.

They had thrown me from the room, only to be sprayed with bullets and I was met with an unexpected hero. At first, I thought it was a guard or two, so I was beyond surprised to see Harvey there, guns raised and a menacing sneer plastered upon him.

Still, there was no time to treat my head injury and the adrenaline was quickly wearing off. Any energy I had left was quick to leave me and I found that I had no choice but to lean onto the master mob-boss, with a sigh of his name in an attempt to warn him and apologise for using him as a support.

If either of them minded neither mentioned it. He had scooped me up into his arms with the help of someone. One of his loyal men. It took everything to stay awake. As much as I had no choice but to go with them that didn't mean I trusted them. How could I? Just because he had tolerated me enough to treat him and then eventually became somewhat friendly and flirty, that didn't mean Harvey Dent wasn't a dangerous man to me.

I had felt the hands change, I was handed down to someone else, only to be swapped back once more. From what I could tell I was on a boat, the rocking of it sending me off to sleep more rapidly than I had hoped. I was exhausted and in pain.

Harvey had placed me in a chair but stayed with me, holding me against his torso. I had tried to keep my head upright but found his shoulder much more welcoming. His hands linked together around me, my legs stretched out across the bench as he held me in his lap. An entirely odd situation, one I never imagined.

He whispered about getting me to safety and then came the sting of treatment and the almost harsh pressure of keeping the blood flowing inside of my body instead of spilling out all over everything.

The reliable pressure, the rocking of the boat and the warmth of his body was enough to send me asleep, as much as I really didn't want to. The sputtering of the engine not enough to disrupt the oddly comforting situation I had found myself in. Then it all stopped, the whirring engine was cut off, the slog of water slapping against the boat the only sound. Muffled cries of men giving directions and orders, followed by the sudden release of my head and strong arms scooping me up again.

My eyes fluttered open a little more at the sudden motion. My own hand flying to my head to attempt to apply the pressure again. I was nowhere near strong enough to do so but the slight attempt helped. Harvey carried me from the boat, the henchmen from before helping him out of the boat as he carried me. The city lights blurring above as they turned from yellow to a flashing blue.

Blue? Wait... Two-face snarled in anger, his grip tightening.

GCPD had arrived, and Harvey cursed. Of course the escape couldn't be that simple. He and his men stood there, all his men pulling their guns out at the approaching police. Their own guns raised as they barked orders at them all to surrender.

'Release the woman, Dent.' One officer ordered. Dent ignored their demands, turning to Dave and jerking his head towards the officers.

'Handle this.' Dave nodded, as Two-face retreated back behind his men. Dave barked out the order and they opened fire while Harvey made his escape. The shipping containers proving to be helpful cover as they disappeared between them. 'So much for subtlety.' Two-face grumbled at Harvey.

'It'll be worth it.' He thought, trying his best to convince his other half.

'It better be.' He snarled as they came to the car waiting for them. Their driver ready to speed away. With one hand he pulled the door open, sliding her into the backseat before shutting the door and going to the other side. Once inside he strapped her in and their driver was away. Speeding into the Gotham streets. 'Change of plan, Gotham general.' Two-face began applying the relevant pressure against her head again. His hand over hers as he leaned over her to make sure she didn't bleed out.

The driver was a little hesitant but didn't say a word, he had learned by now that you should never question or argue with his decisions. That nearly always resulted in death. This didn't stop him from worrying a little. With all this heat on them it wasn't the smartest move to go somewhere so public. Harvey Dent wasn't exactly unrecognisable.

She had finally lost consciousness, falling limp finally. Harvey tried his best not to panic, never having to worry about saving a life before. Two-face took over, preventing Harvey from having the opportunity to handle this poorly. Even more so when flashing blue lights followed them, they had not flawlessly escaped. What was meant to be a escape mission, turned rescue mission had now become a car chase. She didn't have the time for this.

Two-face growled in anger, this woman had prevented them from escaping. Harvey's pathetic emotions had gotten the better of them both. He wanted to throw her from the car, be rid of her forever so they could focus on what was really important. But Two-face was there for Harvey, to protect Harvey and doing that to her would achieve nothing.

'Nothing else matters, get us to the hospital.' Two-face said, the anger clear in his voice. He resented this but it was for Harvey. Their driver did as asked, expertly avoiding capture but inevitably drawing more attention to them as they sped across Gotham. Eventually the red lights that spelled out Emergency came into view and he halted the car dangerously in front of the doors.

Dent unbuckled her, forgetting to be careful as he opened the door and pulled her from the car. In his arms again he ran through the automatic doors, startling the nurses and doctors around the emergency room. 'Take her!' He snarled and they immediately set into action, some calling for police and security to apprehend him, others taking her from his arms and settling her onto a stretcher.

Blue lights flashed closer behind him and they were left with no choice but to escape. If they got away now then there was a chance for them to return, to make sure she had survived. Harvey wanted to stay, Two-face pushed for them to leave.

A toss of a coin. The decision was made. Harvey Two-face had prevailed, forcing Harvey to turn from her and get back into their car.

The ceiling took a few moments to stop being blurry. The familiar sound of hospital beeping and the faint smell of disinfectant filled my senses. I had not been expecting to awaken in a hospital. Had he truly taken me here? No. He couldn't have possibly. The memory of blue flashing lights came forward and that cleared it up entirely. They had been caught, she had been taken from Harvey and brought here. That was the logical explanation.

'Good morning.' A voice pulled my eyes from the ceiling and towards the doctor beside my bed. She was checking my vitals, a small smile on her face as she looked down at me.

'Hi.' It came out hoarse and I cleared my throat. My head throbbing a dull ache, the familiar numbing of painkillers coursing through me. Still I did not attempt to sit up, she would make me lay back if I even tried. 'What happened?' She parted her lips a little as she hesitated saying.

'What do you remember?' Ah yes, the classic move to see what they should and shouldn't say based off my answer.

'Well, Arkham was overrun.' I hesitated this time. 'Harvey Dent helped me escape. I was his doctor in the asylum.' I explained, hoping that cleared up why he even helped me in the first place. She nodded.

'Two-face was the one who brought you in.' She said slowly, a little unsure and possibly in shock at that. I know I was.

'What?' She nodded, eyes looking over me curiously.

'He carried you in and demanded we take you.' I looked away from her, not sure how I felt knowing that he had been true to his word and got me to safety. 'Do you remember who did that to you?' She was talking about my head injury, clearly suspecting that Dent had inflicted it.

'One of Jokers' henchmen.' Came a weak reply, and that earned another shocked look from the doctor.

'Oh. Well, we have some officers from GCPD here to talk to you about the incident. As you've just woken up I'll have them wait for at least half an hour. Is that alright?'

'Yeah, that's fine.' I said and she nodded, satisfied and clearly willing to get away from what she undoubtedly thought was the next Harley Quinn, just for Harvey Dent instead.

'Oh, and someone brought this in for you. He said his name was Dave.' I recognised the name, but couldn't place why because I didn't know a Dave personally. She pointed to a little jewellery box on the bedside table. The lid of it red and the lower half black.

'Thank you.' I mumbled, eyes stuck on the box as she left the room. My trembling hands took it, looking it over carefully before opening it up. Inside there was no jewellery, only a single white button, the one from my coat.

I couldn't help the stupid grin. Oh I really was in trouble.
