Chapter One

JOINT DARK ENERGY MISSION FACILITY

Mojave Desert, United States

"All personnel, evacuation orders confirmed. Proceed to your designated vehicles for off-campus evacuation." A voice announced loudly over a PA system. Men and women rushed around frantically, loading trucks and SUVs with research material and personal belongings. "This is not a drill. Repeat: this is not a drill."

A single helicopter flew over the chaos, quickly touching down on a helipad. Emerging from the aircraft was S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury and his deputy Maria Hill. There to meet them was Agent Coulson.

"How bad is it?" Fury asked, getting straight to the point.

Coulson shook his head, "that's the problem, sir. We don't know."

Nearby, another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent rushed to her SUV, starting it up and putting it in reverse. After weaving through the mass of people, she made her way deep inside the Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. facility, where they kept the most dangerous equipment and research.

"Wolfe!" A supervisor shouted at her as she stepped out of the vehicle. "You're taking Unit 236, that capsule over there."

Agent Wolfe did as she was told, motioning for a lone agent nearby to help her get the heavy capsule into her truck. As they were getting it situated, she noticed a blinking red light on the side of the unit. "Um, sir, this capsule's backup battery is failing, we need to charge it before moving out."

"No time for that, agent! Just got word that we're moving all Phase 2 tech out of here immediately, I need this loading bay cleared fast. We'll get it charged after we clear the area."

Wolfe looked at the capsules label: HIGHLY VOLATILE. "But, sir—"

"That's an order, Agent! Move, now!"

She bit back a retort. "Yes, sir."

The second agent, Henry, took the driver's seat while Wolfe sat in the back with the capsule. "We're moving out."

The truck pulled away from the dock and into the tunnel that led out of the facility. Wolfe sat on the metal floor, next to the capsule with the ominous red light illuminating the cabin.

"You can't be that dangerous, can you?" She asked the capsule, tapping it's metal shell. "Except for that fact that you were stored in a ultra secret S.H.I.E.L.D. lab devoted to volatile energy research… other than that you're perfectly safe."

With that self-reassurance, Wolfe dug through a nearby duffel bag, pulling out multiple tools and set to work removing a piece of the capsules shell to reach the battery. The rumble of a distant explosion interrupted her. She put a finger to her earpiece, "what was that, Henry?"

The driver's voice came through the static. "It was the lab, apparently that was the cause for evacuation. Hope everyone made it out of there, it doesn't look pretty."

"Any word on where we're supposed to rendezvous?"

"Nope, not yet anyway. Only orders we have are to get as far away from here as possible and await pickup. I heard a Code 619 over the channel, that's a compromised agent, right?"

Wolfe ran through the different codes in her head. "Yeah, I believe so. Think the explosion was one of us?"

"No idea. How's the battery coming?"

She rubbed her hands together, suddenly feeling cold. "Not well, I think one of the cells on the battery ruptured. I gotta find a spare."

"Good luck with that." Henry said with a nervous chuckle. "If all else fails we'll pull over and see if we can use the car battery."

"Copy that." Wolfe turned around, rummaging through one of the boxes in search of spare batteries. With her back to the capsule and mind on the task at hand, she didn't notice the frost spreading across the metal capsule.

The truck suddenly swerved, knocking the box she was digging through to the floor.

"Jesus, Henry, did you fall asleep?" She called over the earpiece.

"No, ma'am, it feels like we're hydroplaning."

"It hasn't rained though, and it definitely didn't snow."

She heard Henry grunt as the truck swerved again. "I swear it feels like the wheels are slipping on something! It kind of looks like ice collecting on the road."

"Ice? It's the middle of April, Henry, what are you…" She paused; her breath was visible. Not only that, she began to notice how cold it was getting, her arms covered in goosebumps. Almost reluctantly, she turned to the capsule, which was covered in frost and visibly straining at the rivets.

She could feel the truck slowing down as Henry tried to regain control but it was too late. The truck went into a prolonged skid and Wolfe was thrown into the back doors. She took another glance at the capsule as a rivet popped. Without a second thought, she threw open the back doors and flung herself onto the street, covering her head as she rolled. The capsule burst behind her, sending shrapnel and shards of ice in every direction.

Two agents in the escort car in front of the truck watched in the rear view mirror as the vehicle slipped again, this time flipping onto it's side at least twice before jerking to a stop, followed by an explosion in the back of the truck. The agents parked their car and rushed towards the scene.

"I'll call it in; check on the driver!" One of the agents said, a radio already in his hand. "This is Agent Harris Mendez, escorting truck India Echo Zero Zero Two. There's been an accident; Agents Henry and Wolfe are down. Cargo is classified as highly volatile. Requesting immediate backup. Over."

After a few seconds of only static, an urgent voice responded. "We'll send the closest team ASAP but it may be a few. We're dealing with worse case scenario; Director Fury's chopper is down and the Tesseract is gone. Hold down the fort until backup arrives. Over."

Mendez huffed in annoyance and rushed over to the second agent. "How's the driver, Lance?"

"He's alive but unconscious and has a few broken bones. I don't want to move him until EMTs get here. How's Wolfe?"

"I'm checking now." Mendez said, moving towards the back of the truck.

Agent Wolfe was on the ground a few feet away from the truck, bits of shrapnel and ice embedded in her arms and stomach. She was still alive though, miraculously, hand on her pistol. That's when Mendez spotted the young woman standing just outside the back of the truck, staring at agent Wolfe. The woman had a tall, slender build, blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and long platinum blonde hair woven into a braid. She wore a heavenly blue dress and cape, showing no visible injuries or tears in her dress from the explosion.

Mendez and Lance both drew their weapons. "Step away from Agent Wolfe and put your hands up!"

The woman jumped in surprise, spinning around while waving her hand out in front of her. Ice formed on the ground, spikes pointing in their direction and putting some distance between them. The two agents stepped back but kept their weapons trained on the target. "Fury really needs to label these things better." Mendez muttered to his partner.

Elsa kept her hands trained on the two strangers, holding what she assumed to be small weapons. Her head was spinning and she felt like she could faint at any moment.

"Step away from Wolfe." One of the men said again.

"Hvor er jeg?" Elsa asked, her voice quaking.

"I said, step back and put your hands up." He said again, more firmly.

Something finally clicked in her head. English! They're speaking a somewhat strange form of English. "English?"

The man lowered the item in his hand just a little. "You speak English?"

Elsa gave a small nod. "I-I learned… Is this Britain?"

"No, this is the United States of America, Britain is on the other side of the pond."

Pond? What?

The man fully put away his weapon, stepping closer. "Let's walk over here, let people look at my friend Wolfe here."

At that, Elsa turned back to the woman laying on the ground. She was still awake, staring up at her with shock and fear.

Elsa's head started pounding. "I-I didn't mean to hurt her…" She took a few steps back.

"I believe you, just follow me and we can talk." The man extended his hand peacefully and Elsa reluctantly followed him away from the metal vehicle she apparently destroyed.

"Am I dead…?" She whispered in a trembling voice, more to herself. With every step she took a sheet of ice formed in her wake.

"I don't think so." The man said, turning to her. "If you're dead then that means so am I, and I don't feel dead." He shivered, rubbing his hands together. "Do you think you can turn down the wind?"

She hadn't even realized the wind growing in strength and dropping in temperature around her. Don't feel, she told herself. The fact that the man did not seem afraid actually helped her. Don't feel. The wind started to wane.

"My name's Harris Mendez, can I ask what your name is?"

Queen Elsa of Arendelle, Snow Queen and Ice Sorceress… "Elsa. I do not have a family name."

"Where are you from, Elsa?"

"Arendelle." As soon as the words left her mouth she felt her chest tighten and her breathing quickened. The wind began picking up again.

"Woah, Elsa calm down. We can talk about something else." The man said, stepping closer with his arms out in a peaceful gesture. This only pushed Elsa further away.

Arendelle. Her people. Anna. "Just stay away." She said in a pained voice.

The man immediately took several steps back. "I just want to help you, Elsa, I don't want to pressure you."

She took several deep breaths, trying to calm down. The wind stopped but the snow flurries continued to fall. "Where am I?"

"We're in Arizona, United States." The man explained, only receiving a confused stare from Elsa. "What's the last thing you remember, Elsa?"

Ice, snow, death. And Anna, sweet Anna. A wave of emotion crashed into her as she remembered more details. "I remember wanting the release of death. Why am I here?" The man's hesitation told her he did not want to answer that question. Her face hardened as the wind whipped at her cape and the temperature plummeted fast. "I've answered your questions, Mr. Mendez, now you answer mine. What do you want from me?"

The man, Harris, shielded his eyes with his arm as the fury of the wind and snow grew stronger. "Elsa, I need you to calm down."

A sound on her left caused her to whip around, hands raised. It was another one of those metal, horseless vehicles. Five men quickly jumped out and aimed more of those weapons at her, only these were much bigger. She stepped back, hugging herself as the small storm around her continued to grow. "Stay back!"

"We aren't going to hurt you, Elsa!" Mendez yelled over the storm. "Please, just calm down and let us help you!"

"I said, stay back!" With a wave of her hand she crafted six faceless ice-figures that looked a lot like knights, six feet tall and wielding ice swords and shields. The knights advance forward, shields up to protect their creator.

Mendez tried to reach for his weapon but found it frozen to his belt. One of the ice knights approached quickly, raising its sword.

Don't be the monster they think you are, the voice of a liar sounded in Elsa's head. Liar or not, his words rang true and it horrified her. With a wave of her hand she commanded the knights to stop in their tracks.

So distracted was she, Elsa didn't notice one of the new arrivals had worked their way around and behind her. Suddenly, a burst of electricity shot through her back. She screamed in pain, collapsing to her knees. The storm around her began to lose its intensity as she slipped into unconsciousness. Whatever that was it hurt, and took a lot out of her. The last thing she saw was several men approaching through the snow, then the welcoming comfort of darkness.

• • •

Cautiously, the SHIELD agents approached the woman. The agent that managed to knock her out was putting restraints on her wrists and ankles. The ice knights were not attacking them but they weren't dissipating either. They just stood still passively, seemingly watching them.

"Agent Mendez, are you alright?" One of them asked him.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Be careful, don't harm her. Someone check on Wolfe and Henry." Mendez turned to the truck to see his superior, Agent Phil Coulson. "If Fury is going to keep metahumans in capsules the least he can do is give a better warning label."

Coulson nodded with a smile. "Noted. What happened here?"

"Lance and I were escorting this truck when it exploded. Before that there was ice collecting on the road. I assume this metahuman, Elsa, was regaining consciousness because of the failed battery."

Again Coulson nodded, watching as the other agents restrained the blonde woman to a stretcher. "Bring her to the secondary facility."

"Yes, sir."

• • •

Her head spinning was the first thing Elsa noticed. The second was the blindingly white room she was in. Her nose and throat burned as she breathed in the dry air. Her mouth was dry and lips felt cracked. She winced in pain as she ran her tongue over the cracks.

Slowly sitting up, she observed her surroundings. She was in a windowless room with stark white walls, laying in a small bed with grey bed sheets. The room was minimally decorated with a wooden table in the middle of the room with three chairs, and a wooden rocking chair in the left corner.

Again her head began to throb as she tried to remember what happened.

Anna. Snow. Ice. Death. She took a deep, shaky breath, trying to rein in her emotions. I was in the desert. I injured a woman. There were strangely dressed English-men… I almost attacked them… now where am I?

Shaking her head, Elsa slid out of the uncomfortably hot bed. The cool ground felt wonderful on her feet, which also made her realize she was barefoot. Her shoes were placed against the wall next to the bed.

Absent-mindedly wrapping her arms around herself, she moved towards the table. A plate of what she assumed to be food items were there. Seeing the mysterious food caused her stomach to rumble loudly. She hadn't eaten since right before her coronation.

Elsa gingerly sat in one of the chairs with the food right in front of her. The meat and vegetables were at least somewhat recognizable, but the glass of water next to the plate was her first target. With only a moment's hesitation, she took a sip of the water. It's cool content passed her cracked lips and she noted how clean the water was.

After several gulps of water she decided to try the food. While it wasn't the greatest thing she's ever eaten, her hunger let her scarf it all down. And who knows, maybe it's actually poison. Maybe she'll finally get that death she wanted…

She shook her head of these thoughts, pushing the now empty plate away.

A soft clicking sound drew her attention to the wall in front of her. Elsa jumped from her chair as a rectangular section of the wall swung open. Two people, a man and a woman, stepped inside.

The man spoke first, extending his hand to her. "So sorry, we didn't mean to startle you. I'm Agent Coulson." She hesitantly took his hand. "This is my colleague, Dr. Franklin."

Elsa eyed them cautiously as the two sat down at the table.

"Please, have a seat." The 'agent' asked, his voice soft and kind. Elsa did as he asked and sat across from them. "As a matter of formality, what style should I address you as? We weren't sure if 'your highness' or 'your majesty' was more appropriate."

'Your majesty' would be the correct style… but I literally threw my crown away. Elsa thought to herself with a shake of her head. "Just Elsa, please."

Dr. Franklin spoke next, moving the empty plate and putting her hands on the table. "Elsa, there's no easy way to tell you this. You have been frozen for a long, long time… asleep essentially. We aren't completely sure how you stayed alive all this time but it's assumed your powers had something to do with it."

"Hvor lenge...?" Elsa spoke in her native tongue before remembering where she was. "I mean… how long? Months? Years?"

Coulson and Dr. Franklin exchanged looks. "Well… today is May the 2nd," Franklin started but paused to take a deep breath. "Of the year twenty twelve."

Elsa felt her whole body go numb. Dr. Franklin was still talking but she could not comprehend her words. One hundred and seventy years… everything and everyone she ever knew was gone. What became of Arendelle without her? Without Anna? "Stakkars søte Anna." Her voice cracked as she struggled to breath. She was vaguely aware of hands lifting her off the floor, at some point she must have slid out of the chair. Her tears were warm on her cheeks, something that shouldn't actually be possible for her but she was too far gone to fully notice.

Why should I live and Anna die? I killed my dear sister and must be tormented by that fact every day… Living really is my true curse.

Everything after that was a blur. Her tears continued to fall as her mind drifted to unconsciousness.
