CHAPTER 45-THE CORRECT PLACE
"You can't choose whom you love Barry... Sometimes they choose you" Barry's mind wandered around Mary's words as he sat in his cabin. He kept staring at the ceiling not understanding what to do.
"I told you Barry... Didn't I?" A voice made Barry come out of his thoughts. He followed it to find Eobard Thawne standing in the dark with a smirk. "You would never be happy... No Matter what you do..." Barry suddenly ran angrily to get hold of him but all he caught was dust. "Too slow!... No wonder your daughter had to come back in time and beg her mother to save your slow ass... Too bad, I couldn't kill this version of Nora. What was her full name again?...Alexandra Nora Allen!!" Thawne taunted Barry by moving across the room. "You killed her, Barry...Tell me, how did you feel after killing Nora??"
"Don't you dare talk about her!!" Barry shouted, still trying to get hold of Eobard.
"Poor Barry, Lost his Mom, Dad, Kara and two versions of his daughters as well." Thawne started laughing. Barry sped with all his speed and was about to punch but Eobard caught it and slammed Barry to the floor. "This is the end Barry..."Eobard started vibrating his hand. "And after I'm done with you, I'm gonna kill your precious Caitlin as well..." With that he slammed his hand to Barry's heart.
.
After letting out their sorrows, Alex had intended Caitlin to come to Kara's Loft. "I was cleaning Kara's stuff when I found something two months ago."
"What did you find?" Caitlin asked
"See for yourself" Alex said, pointing Caitlin towards a portrait. Caitlin slowly removed the cover of the frame to see it was a picture of a girl. Caitlin could see a lot of resemblances.
"Is this... Alexandra?" Caitlin asked, turning to Alex. Alex nodded with tears in her eyes.
"Yeah, It is Lexie... That's how she's called apparently. Kara drew this a couple of days before the invasion."
"She looks a lot.. a lot like.." Caitlin trembled still eyes on the picture
"Like Barry?" Alex asked as Caitlin looked at Alex
"Yeah.."
"I thought the same when I first saw it.." Alex said, walking over. "But she's got Kara's eyes" Caitlin nodded at it.
"I know this must be strange for you.." Caitlin said.
"To know that Kara had a daughter and she was named after me...it feels strange...Kind of proud too! I Never thought I would be so important to anyone" Alex said as a tear fell.
"Hey, you're very important... You meant the world to Kara... Don't ever think that you don't matter" Caitlin said.
"So are you... To Barry" Alex said as Caitlin gave a weak smile.
"I'm sure, Lexie would have learned a lot from you... Kicking People's ass for sure" Caitlin said laughing.
"I Would have definitely trained her in that" Alex said laughing. "I just wish I got to know her...to know what she became, did she become a CSI like her dad or a reporter like her mom.."
"Or a Badass Agent like her aunt?" Caitlin said and Alex gave a small smile.
"Things like these have been coming up to me... Like how was her life while growing up? Did she have a boyfriend or girlfriend? Did I threaten him or her when she started dating" Alex said Which made Caitlin laugh.
"I'm pretty sure she had a happy life.." Caitlin said.
"How? How are you sure?"
"You've been with Kara since the day she came to Earth. You've protected her every day... I'm sure you would have done the same for Lexie as well... I'm sure Everyone would have taken care of her. J'onn, Jessie, Felicity, Lena, Clark, Lois, Cisco...Me" Caitlin said and she noticed Alex winced at last. "What happened?"
"Nothing... It's nothing" Alex said.
"You can talk to me..." Caitlin said. Alex took a breath.
"Kara recorded her last things for me...I found that a week after the Invasion... For a very long time, I couldn't dare to watch it...I never really understood why Kara did it even after Ray said it was because of Lexie" Alex said as Caitlin listened. "But when I saw Lexie's picture here.. I knew I had to know her... So I watched it. Kara told me about Lexie...How she's as stubborn as her. How she looks and behaves a lot like Barry" Which brought a smile on Caitlin's face. "Lexie told Kara what happened in the future... something happened one day and.. and Barry was about to get killed when... You sacrificed yourself to save him..." Alex said, looking at Caitlin to see her stunned. She remained silent for a while to give Caitlin some time.
"What happened after that?" Caitlin asked, breaking her silence.
"Barry finally realised how much he loved you... Kara said that a part of him died along with you, his heart..." A tear fell from Caitlin's eye. "He left everyone.. they couldn't find him anywhere... Not until Steppenwolf's attack came in. He helped them in fighting but at the cost of his life. He died saving everyone..." Caitlin's heart broke at that.
"I..I'm sorry for all of this.." Caitlin cried "I'm the reason Lexie didn't get to live with her dad"
"What? Caitlin.." Alex was cut.
"No... Barry wouldn't have left her to grow alone if I never loved him... Barry, Kara and Lexie, they would have been such a happy family... I destroyed their family...None of this would have happened.. Kara wouldn't have died trying to change the future... I'm sorry!!" Caitlin stood at that and was about to walk but Alex caught her.
"Hey Hey, Caitlin... You didn't do anything... None of this was your fault" Alex said Holding Caitlin from walking away. "You didn't destroy anyone's family. Barry wouldn't have been alive. God knows what would have happened if he had died.. You saved their family Caitlin.. you saved the whole world.. you stopped Barry from changing time After Steppenwolf's attack. You were a hero Caitlin.. you always were!"
"I don't want to be... I just want to be with Barry" Caitlin said as Alex took her in for a hug. They both remained silent for a while. Caitlin looked around to see a lot of things packed up
"You've packed a lot of things here..." Caitlin said
"You know it's funny... I've been trying to clean up and organise Kara's stuff into boxes... the heavier the boxes get... The lighter I feel..." Alex said "and I've been saving this for you guys...You should take this" Alex started packing the portrait.
"What why? You're giving up this?" Caitlin asked
"What? No..No..God... I could never do that... It's a part of me... I'm just trying to find the correct place for it. I'm gonna take one last look at this and put it where it's supposed to be...With Barry.. Kara would have wanted that.."
"I don't know where I should take it?.. Barry's gone" Caitlin sobbed at it.
"He'll come back" Alex said.
"I'm not so sure" Caitlin said sadly.
"Trust me.. eventually he will.. because 'You Caitlin Snow, are his home..' and everyone returns to their home"
.
"Caitlin!!!!!" Barry woke up shouting. His body was full of sweat. He looked around to realise that he was in his cabin. He never realised when he had drifted off to sleep. All he remembered was the words Mary said to him and him walking back to his cabin. He stood from his bed and walked to his bathroom. He splashed some water on his face and looked at himself in the mirror. He was pretty sure that Caitlin would give him a full talk if she saw his present condition. He looked like someone had taken out life from his body. As he thought about Caitlin. The thought of Eobard trying to kill Caitlin didn't leave his mind. Even though he knew it was a nightmare, which was slowly becoming a part of Barry's life, people he lost coming back to taunt him. He slowly walked back and dropped on to his chair. He could see the photo frames he had picked up when he left the central city. Pictures of his friends, family and most importantly Caitlin. He picked it up and looked at her happy face. Everything from his heart was asking to run to her. But the thought of losing her was something he was not able to take out. Even though he knew that Thawne's attack was his nightmare, he wanted to make sure that everything was fine with Caitlin. He moved to the drawer and took out the burner phone he brought with him. He opened her contact and stared at it for a minute and then pressed the call button.
Caitlin entered her loft and poured herself a glass of wine. She crashed on her sofa and zoned out staring at the ceiling. Suddenly her phone started to ring. She picked it up and answered it "Hello"
A relief came in Barry as he listened to Caitlin's voice.
"Hello?" Caitlin repeated as there was no response from the other side. But Barry just remained silent. "Barry?" Caitlin asked with a glimmer of hope. "Barry, I know it's you..." Barry on the other side of the line took a husky breath, which was all the confirmation Caitlin needed. "How are you?". Caitlin waited for a response but it was in vain. "It's okay Barry, you don't need to say anything... Life has been rough here. Cisco and Felicity are trying their best to fill your shoes trying to protect the city, so are J'onn and Nia... Jessie's keeping herself busy with company stuff. Joe has pretty much distanced himself from labs. I..I met Alex today, she's trying her best to come out to the world. Lena started a foundation in Kara's name to help the people in need. And I...I don't know Barry... I'm just trying to figure out my place here now...I don't know what to do here anymore Barry... I understand how you are feeling. I just want you to know that you are not alone in this.. I'll always wait for you... Take care Barry... I Love You Barry" With that Barry cut the call.
"I love you too Caitlin..." He murmured
.
The air was thick and cold. Mountains can be seen from a distance, filling the scenery. Small droplets of white flocks fell everywhere. It looked like a dream. Except he felt it like a nightmare. His footsteps left its mark on the snow as he dragged his body to keep going.
He had a small backpack on his back. He was not sure how many days had passed since he started walking. His sight was confusing, he was not sure if things he saw in front of him were real or not. He knew his body was about to give up but he wasn't. He kept walking slowly and then he saw someone standing with their back towards him.
"It's so peaceful here, isn't it?" The man asked and turned towards Barry.
"Dad?" Barry said with a confused look.
