Title: The Kiss

Disclaimer: I do not own the High School Musical plot or any of its characters. They are a part of Disney's creations.

Summary: My version of how Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez share their first kiss.

Author's note: I have just realized that it might take me a while to post the first chapter of my story. So until then, I wrote a short story about one of the most common plots - the kiss that never happened on High School Musical 1. So, here is my version of how the kiss should have happened. By the way, I have an Instagram account in case you readers want to know all the updates and stuff regarding on what I'll be posting on this website. The Instagram account has the same name as my fan-fiction account. Also, this is my first time writing a short story, so if it not as good as you hoped it would be, let me know. I would love to hear your reviews about what you think. You can send the review either on the Instagram account or fan-fiction review.

They came closer, his arms around her waist and her hands resting on his biceps that were slippery with sweat. Gabriella's stomach fluttered with excitement at the thought that she would finally get to kiss Troy Bolton. The boy made her heart race a little faster every time he looked at her and gave her one of his charming, boyish smiles. She thought about how he had helped her get over her stage fright and enjoy being on stage. She thanked the heavens that Troy Bolton had been persistent and climbed the tree to her balcony to ask her for forgiveness. Had he not done that, they surely wouldn't be here in the gym, a sea of red and white celebration, about to kiss.

Troy tilted his head down to her meet her gaze, his sweaty hair falling into his bright blue eyes. He could not believe that this was finally happening. He was about to have his first kiss. With Gabriella. The shy and quiet teenager who had captivated him ever since they sang at the kids' party on that faithful New Year's Eve. As he looked into her deep brown eyes, he could see no resistance. He leaned in closer and saw her eyes flutter shut. Just as his eyes were about to close and close the gap between them...

"Hey Hoops, you'll never guess who I just landed a date with." The afro-haired boy interrupted what Troy and Gabriella knew would have been a magical and enchanting first kiss.

Before either could react to Chad's interruption, Taylor pulled Gabriella away and excitedly said, "Chad asked me out on a date!" Gabriella and Taylor started squealing together and hugged each other.

Troy sighed in annoyance. This was not what he was hoping for. But, at the same time, he was also happy for his best friend.

"That's awesome, dude. So, when're you taking her?" Troy said, looking in the crowd for Gabriella. He caught her standing with Taylor, chatting eagerly. He zoned out and could focus on nothing but the curly-haired teenage girl who, in his opinion, looked absolutely beautiful in her red dress.

As Gabriella talked with Taylor, she could feel someone's eyes on her and turned around to see that Troy Bolton was staring at her. She felt her cheeks heat up as she blushed and offered Troy a shy smile. Troy's grin widened at this and, he promised himself that he would make that kiss happen.

"You both were amazing out there!" Lucille gushed, placing a hand on her chest. "Troy, I never knew you could sing so well."

They were at the Bolton's house for dinner. They were seated around the dinner table and, Troy and Gabriella sat facing each other. It wasn't awkward like how the teens imagined it to be. The parents got along well and chatted with each other nicely. The two teenagers ate quietly and stole glances at each other while their parents talked. Troy ducked his head when he heard his mother compliment him.

"I must agree, son. You and Gabriella had the whole audience fascinated with your performance." Jack Bolton said, nodding his head towards both the teens. Gabriella, hearing this, blushed.

"Mi Hija, he's right. I never knew you could sing so well, let alone in front of a crowd that large." Maria Montez said, caressing her daughter's arm affectionately.

"It wasn't all me, mom. If it wasn't for Troy, I couldn't have been able to sing up on stage." Her daughter responded, looking over at Troy, who sent her a soft smile. She smiled back and turned her gaze to her plate, eating quietly.

The two teens were so busy eating that they ignored the looks shared by their parents. Maria and Lucille looked at each other with broad smiles, while Jack looked at the exchange between the two women and shaking his head. The parents weren't oblivious to the attraction between their children. Not at all. They knew the kids liked each other but were curious as to why they weren't together yet.

Lucille, who noticed the silence that seemed to radiate from the kids, said, "If you kids are done with dinner, you can leave the table and spend time together."

Troy and Gabriella, who was all too eager, quickly got up from their chair were about to make their way out when Gabriella turned back, "Mrs Bolton, do you need help with collecting the dishes?"

Troy stood behind Gabriella and sent his mother a look, asking her to deny the favor. Lucille, who saw her son's expression, looked at her husband and Maria, who gave her a nod to allow the kids to leave. She turned back to the kids, "No, that's alright, Gabi. Thanks for asking, though."

Troy's face immediately showed relief, "Come on, Gabi. Let's go out to the backyard." He said, tugging her hand and leading her to the backdoor. As he turned back to look at the three adults, he saw his mother give him a bright smile and a thumbs up, while Maria and Jack smirked at him. He blushed and went out the back door.

Troy closed the door and turned to look at Gabriella, who stood in the middle of the mini basketball court. She had a basketball in her hands and was getting into position to take a shot. She was still in the same red dress that she wore after the callbacks. Her skin glowed in the moonlight. He stood there watching her as she took the shot and watched the ball land in the hoop. He put his hands into his sweatpants' pockets and made his way to her.

"You know, with your basketball skills, I think it's about time that we have a match." Troy said and watched as Gabriella turned around to smile at him.

"You just had a match. Aren't you tired, wildcat?" God, he loved that nickname. It made his insides melt whenever she called by that nickname.

"Nah, too much adrenaline." He took the basketball from her hands and made a jump shot. The ball landed in the hoop.

"Well, wildcat, let's see how you take this ball from me." Gabriella said teasingly, walking up to him and snatching the ball from his grasp.

"Hey! That's not fair. Gabriella, come back here!" Troy laughed, chasing her. Gabriella ran around the hoop. But, before she could make her escape, Troy engulfed her in his arms from behind and swung her around. Gabriella giggled, feeling like she was flying as Troy lifted her.

Troy beamed as he heard her giggle. He gently set her down but did not remove his arms from around her waist. Gabriella turned around in his arms to look at him and placed her hands on his upper arms. They stared into each other's eyes, chocolate brown meeting ocean blue. Troy and Gabriella seemed to be wonderstruck as they stared at each other for what felt like days.

Troy flashed back to earlier that day when they were about to kiss in the gym. Gabriella thought about the same thing and felt herself take in a breath as Troy's arms tighten and pull her closer. Troy felt a little braver when he felt Gabriella's hands tighten their hold on his arms instead of pulling away.

Gabriella's eyes widened when she saw Troy leaning his head down to meet her. Gabriella tilted her head up to meet his and close the gap between them.

They did it. Troy and Gabriella finally kissed. It was the best feeling in the world. The way their soft lips moved against each other made them never want to let go and enjoy this moment forever. As they kissed, Troy tightened his arms around Gabriella's waist and moved her hands to his neck and into his hair, gripping on it as she kissed him.

After what felt like a million years, they released the clasp of their lips, a soft smack sounded. Troy leaned his head and looked at Gabriella, whose eyes slowly fluttered open. They first smiled shyly at each other, and their smiles grew into enormous grins as they realized that they had shared their first kiss.

Troy realized that there was one other thing that he wanted to do. He nervously rubbed the back of his neck and asked, "So, umm... I wanted to know... if... if you would go out with me? Like, on a date. You know... seeing as we kissed... and I really like you. So... would you like to go out with me?"

Gabriella smiled widely. God knows how long she had waited for this. As she was about to answer, they heard a squeal behind them. The two teenagers turned back to see that their parents were watching them from the kitchen window. All three adults had grins on their faces. The teens blushed and turned back to each other, ignoring their parents.

Troy chuckled to cover his embarrassment at being spied by his parents. "We seriously have to stop getting interrupted so often. So, looks like our parents know what they want you to say. What do you say?"

"Well, I can't really disappoint them, can I?" She asked as she looked behind Troy to see their parents still spying on them. She leaned up and pecked his lips and muttered, "Yes, I would love to go out with you."

Troy grinned, hearing her answer, and kissed her again. Their mothers squealed and awed behind them. He was grateful for having made the promise to kiss Gabriella.
