It was in the middle of the night and Erin was woken up by the baby moving, she smiled at the fact that she was pretty sure he or she just turned around, she placed her hands on her belly, "Thanks baby, we did it."

All she wanted was to tell Jay, she got up and quietly walked to Jays room, she knocked on it gently and opened the door, she heard Jay moving, "Hey Jay."

Jay started waking up, he heard Erin at the door, what was going on at 3 in the morning, he rubbed his eyes trying to wake up, "Erin what's wrong? Is it the baby? Are you okay?"

She smiled as she walked to sit next to him, "Sorry to wake you, I just wanted to tell you something."

Jay was confused but sat up next to her, "Okay sure, what is it?"

"I think I felt the baby turn." Erin said with a big smile that made Jay smile.

"Really?" He asked as she nodded, "That is so good Erin."

"I know."

"Can I get a fist bump baby," Jay said as he balled up his fist and gently placed it on Erins belly, "Pow."

Erin chuckled as she watched Jay, "Well I'm going to go back to bed now, sorry for waking you up just thought you'd want to know."

"That's why you live here, so I don't miss anything. Thankyou Erin," Jay smiled as he watched her walk away, "Night."

"Night Jay."

...

The next day Jay stopped by med on his way into work, he wanted to see Will to tell him to organise a dinner with their dad. It would be better getting him to organise it then Jay, his dad always favoured Will more.

Jay waited for Will outside the hospital. Not long Will came out, "Hey Jay, what's going on?"

"Just about to head into work but I wanted to ask a favour."

"Sure what is it?" Will asked.

"Dinner with dad, think it's about time he meets Erin and I tell him I'm going to be a dad." Jay said blankly, he didn't exactly want to do it but he knew he had too.

"Okay sure, this is a good thing Jay." Will smiled.

"I will believe it when I see something good come out of it, we are free on Friday so try organise it for then." Jay said.

"Okay sure, so why are we going out for dinner why not just do it at your place or dads?"

"I think it's better meeting on mutual ground." Jay smirked.

"Okay sure," Will paused, "Righto, I will call dad and then let you know. Trust me Jay it's a going to be fine."

"Yeah yeah, just let me know. I gotta go, talk later." Jay said as he started rushing off.

"Bye Jay."

...

Couple nights later and they were driving to go meet Will and Jays dad, Erin was nervous. For starters she'd never met the guy and the first time they were meeting she was nearly 38 weeks pregnant with his sons kid. Didn't look great for Jay and all she cared about was it going well for him.

She could feel Jays tenseness as she sat in the passenger seat, he was stiff and grinning into the steering wheel.

"Jay you need to relax a little." Erin said calmly, she didn't want to get snapped at.

"Sorry..." Jay paused and took a deep breath, "I haven't seen him in I don't know 3 years? I probably should have reconnected but I just couldn't."

"I'm sure he will be glad to see you."

"Wait until you meet him, then you will understand." Jay said bluntly as they pulled up.

They both got out of Jays car and walked into the restaurant. They look around and then saw Will waving them over, Erin noticed the old man that had his back to them, that was obviously their dad so she carefully took a deep breath, hoping that tonight would just go well.

They walked towards the table, Jay had his hand placed lightly on Erins back, once they got to the table the old man stood up in front of them.

"Hey dad." Jay said bluntly as he nodded at Will.

"Jay." Pat said as he held his hand out, Jay shook it, Erin was shocked at the awkwardness they had between each other.

"Dad i'd like you to meet my friend, Erin Lindsay. Erin this is my dad, Pat Halstead." Jay said as he nodded towards Erin.

Pat stood there looking Erin up and down, Erin cleared her throat, "Mr Halstead it's nice to finally meet you."

She held her hand out and he shook it, "Call me Pat."

After the formalities they all took their seats, for a few minutes it stayed quiet while they looked at their menus, the waitress then came over, thankfully. Finally there was no silence as they all ordered their drinks and food. Erin felt uncomfortable as Pat kept staring her down, he was obviously trying to figure her out, especially considering Jay introduced her as his friend but she was obviously pregnant with his kid.

"So Erin, your pregnant. It's Jays I'm guessing, I mean why would you be meeting me otherwise?" Pat said bluntly.

Erin looked up at him stunned, wow he really did get straight to the point. But before Erin could say anything she felt Jays hand under the table squeeze her leg.

"Dad, yes me and Erin are having a baby and we invited you out tonight to tell you." Jay said forcing a grin.

"Can she not speak for herself?" Pat said rudely as he continued to wait for Erins answer.

"Pat, yes I'm pregnant and your son is the father. We both thought it would be a good idea that you knew, we want you to be in your grandchild's life." Erin said with a smile as she rested her hand on Jay.

"So why now? You look like your about to have the baby." Pat asked.

"Things are a little complicated but yes I'm nearly 38 weeks pregnant." Erin said bluntly, trying not to get offended.

"So are the two of you getting married?" Pat asked.

"Dad go easy on the questions, you just met Erin." Will said.

"No we aren't getting married as Erin said it's complicated we aren't in a relationship." Jay said firmly.

"Why? " Pat asked.

"Dad it's not you concern honestly." Jay said.

"Okay then," Pat paused, "So how did the two of you meet?"

"We use to work together, we were partners." Erin smiled.

"So your a cop too Erin?"

"Yeah, a detective like Jay. I was really lucky to be partnered up with your son, he is really good at what he does you should be proud of him." Erin smiled as she looked at Jay.

"Mmhm, so what do you plan on doing after you have the baby?" Pat continued to ask questions even though Jay was getting annoyed and Will was trying to tell him to shut up, yet he just said he was trying to get to know Erin.

"I haven't really thought about it." Erin shrugged.

"Right, well you probably should."

"Okay dad that's enough, you don't need to bombard Erin with questions. She is only trying to be polite, half of it doesn't even concern you." Jay said getting frustrated.

"Calm down Jay, I just think you guys need to think things through more." Pat said casually.

"And what's that suppose to mean?" Jay said angrily.

"Well your raising a baby together, yet your not getting married let alone even together. You are both police, which I don't think is very good for the baby."

Erin sat up straight, "Sorry Pat, just want to know what you mean by that? I don't think being police is going to effect the baby's life."

"You say that now dear." Pat said barely looking at her.

Erin just rolled her eyes as Jay stood up, "You know what, I know we haven't spoken in 3 years and I'm sorry for that but I thought you could at least support me with this, I'm having a baby and all you care about is why me and Erin aren't getting married."

"Jay sit down, your being ridiculous. It just obviously seems like you two aren't prepared for this, the whole thing was obviously a mistake." Pat said watching as Jay got more and more frustrated.

"Okay dad I think that's enough, we came here so Jay could tell you his news and for you to meet Erin, so let's just enjoy the rest of the night." Will said getting between the two of them.

Jay looked at him and then at Erin, "I'm sorry Will but I'm not going to sit here and let him tell me about the so called mistake I have made."

"Jay you are being ridiculous." Pat said rolling his eyes.

"Erin come on we don't have to sit here for this, you don't deserve it." Jay said reaching his hand out for hers, she grabbed it she stood up beside him.

"Will I will ring you later, dad sorry that I have once again disappointed you." Jay said as we started walking out, Erin following him. She stopped next to Pat as she was walking off.

"Mr Halstead it was a pleasure meeting you, just so you know, I know our situation isn't ideal but we are making it work and if I had to do this with anyone I'd pick your son. He's a great cop and he's going to be an even better father, I just hope that one day you will get to see that." Erin smiled and gave Will a quick hug before she left with Jay.

"You couldn't have just been polite and excepted what Jay had to say?" Will said to his father.

"He's a grown adult, he will get over it he just overreacts with things." Pat said.

"No it's because everything he tells you there's always something wrong about it, it took him a lot to come here tonight, just next time maybe at least try to support him." Will said annoyed, he hated that there was always so much tension between Jay and their dad.

...

Later that night back at Jays apartment Erin found him sitting on the balcony sipping on a glass of whiskey, it was a cold night yet he was out there alone. She grabbed a blanket and walked outside.

"God it's freezing out here, what are you doing Jay?" Erin said wrapping the blanket around her.

"Sorry, just needed the fresh air. Come on let's go back inside." Jay said as he opened the door letting Erin go in first.

They walked in and sat on the lounge together, Jay poured more whiskey into his glass as he looked over to Erin, "I'm sorry about tonight."

"Jay don't apologise, you done nothing wrong." Erin said placing a hand on Jays arm, rubbing her finger gentle on it.

Jay looked down and then back at her as she quickly pulled away, "So now do you understand why I haven't spoken to him in 3 years?"

"I'm sure he will come around, I mean he's going to have a grandson or granddaughter."

"Maybe, but look if he doesn't we have plenty of other people that are going to be in this baby's life, he or she is going to be very loved." Jay said smiling as he rubbed his hand on her bump.

"You got that right."
