Chapter 1 - WTF is going on?
"What the fuck is going on here?!" a light British lilted feminine voice shrieked over the fighting in the old log home.
Every movement stopped in the home. Every sound stopped. Every single person moved to face towards the angry female. She was literally seething and vibrating in anger.
"Sis!" Sam hollered and ran towards her, "You need to leave."
"Oh, for fucks sake. A few little vampires are not going to harm me." she hissed at her baby brother.
"What?" every person in the room said at once.
"Michael get your ass down here." she demanded, "Now!".
David let go of Michael and watched him obey the tiny red headed bespectacled woman that entered the house. She had a powerful presence. More powerful than Max. But how did she know about vampires? She did not smell like one. Was she a hunter like Lucy's father? He was retired but he may have passed his knowledge and skills on to her. The way she moved said she was trained.
"Who is responsible for this? Huh?" she asked sternly.
"Mel, you don't understand." Mike started.
"Don't give me that bullshit. I know more about vampires than you will ever know." Mel snarked.
"Now who started this?" she said.
Mike was quiet and Sam looked scared. She waited for an answer and when no one answered she turned on everyone left in the room. She looked over each of them and then she stopped on Star and Laddie. Her eyes narrowed.
"Which one of you turned a fucking kid?" she asked of the guys.
"None of us." Dwayne answered her quietly.
"I see. None of you are the coven leader. Where is he?" she asked pointedly at David, "You're the first he changed. You're the strongest here. But your sire must be very old. Maybe a few centuries at most."
David nodded but was quiet otherwise. There was something about her. She was powerful but he could not pinpoint what it was. She was not a vampire or a werewolf. What was she?
"Young man, please come here." she said kindly to Laddie.
Star tried to hold Laddie back.
"Sit your frizzy headed ass down and shut the fuck up." she snarled at Star and pointed to the couch.
Star froze but the look on her lower face was enough to get her moving in the direction Mel had pointed. Her glasses were different. You could not see her eyes. Not even with their vampire eyes. There was something different about her. Little Laddie moved stiffly towards her. She smiled soft and kind at him. She stuck her hand in her pocket and pulled out a lolly, giving it to the small child.
"Now, what's your name?" she asked and squatted down to his height.
He accepted the sucker and put it in his mouth. He smiled and took a couple sucks before he answered her.
"I was not supposed to be turned. My mommy and I got separated. Star took me to the boardwalk guard, but he got busy, so I followed her when she left the boardwalk. She did not know I was there. Star was nice to me and the only person that cared I was lost. I followed her to the cave and when she went in, I followed. I saw the bottle and I was thirsty." Laddie told her between sucks on the lolly.
"Oh dear." Mel said, "What is your name, sweetie?"
"It is Laddie." he answered.
"Alright Laddie, will you please go sit next to Miss Star? Thank you." she said, and Laddie skipped over to Star.
She stood and turned back to the room. She noticed those ridiculous Frog Brothers in their ridiculous get ups. She had a sour look on her face, and they noticed.
"Samuel, may I ask, are those two idiots your friends?" she asked her baby brother and they made noises of discontent.
Sam nodded, "Edgar and Alan Frog."
"Frog? As in Frog Comics?" she asked, "I always loved that place when I'd visit."
Edgar and Alan nodded in her direction. She was an appreciator of comics. She actually started Sam on them. They were a comfort to her when she'd come home from her boarding school in London. She always felt out of place being at home. Then there were their parents fighting. She had to shut the world out and since holidays were mandatory for her to go home, she had no other choice.
"Parents still doing mushrooms and LSD? she asked them.
Both of their faces tinged red and then they looked ashamed. Sam looked at the curiously. He had not been far off when he guessed bakery and sniffing old newsprint. Their parents were stoned out of their minds. He felt bad for them, and he felt bad that he had made those little jabs. No wonder they were so into their comics.
"Both of you go sit on the loveseat." she said sternly.
They both moved and sat where she directed. Then she turned her wrath onto the vampires in the room. They all sized her up. Mel did not look like much, but David was stiff and that told the rest of them that he was weary of her. Even they could feel that there was something about her. She set them all on edge.
"Now who are you all?" she asked.
They each introduced themselves. David, Paul, and Dwayne. She nodded to each of them.
"Why are you in my family's house?" she asked, directing the question to David.
"We can't refuse an order." David answered.
"Ah, yes. Sire compulsion. You have no choice or say. Is that all?" she asked.
"They killed Marko." Paul said sadly and anger sheened in his eyes as he looked at the Frogs.
"Marko?" she asked him.
"Our little brother." Dwayne answered.
She rounded on the ones sitting on the other side of the room. The air crackled strangely around her.
"Whose brilliant idea was it to go into a vampire's nest and kill one of them? And I feel like you did it the cowardly way while they were asleep during the day?" Mel said and looked at each of them.
"Why does it matter? They turned us without consent." Mike yelled, anger getting the better of him.
"Little. Brother. Shut. Up." she punctuated each word, "Let me tell you a little about vampires. The sire is the one in control. He or she makes the decisions. And with the animosity between them and you that tells me they wanted nothing to do with you. But their sire on the other hand probably wanted you in with them. They did not pick you. The sire did. When he gives an order, they cannot resist it."
Sam and Mike looked at the Frog Brothers. They both had looks that asked did they know that.
"Yeah, but we disproved that Max guy. So, it had to be blondie over there." Edgar said and pointed at David.
"Boys, leave the vampire hunting to the adults or the supernatural. We will take care of ourselves." she said, garnering all eyes on her, "Now, this mess needs to be cleaned up. And you will all help and not go at each other. By the way where is mom and grandpa?"
"Mom and grandpa are on dates." Sam spoke up.
"Oh. Grandpa and Mrs. Johnson are a thing I'm guessing?" she asked with a smile on her face, "Whose mom on a date with?"
"Max, the video store owner and her boss." Mike sneered, obviously he did not like him.
"The same Max that you all thought was David's sire?" she asked watching David.
David's eyes betrayed him. He could not say whom his sire was, but he gave it away with just those beautiful blue eyes. She turned and smiled at the boys and moved to help them clean up the mess that had become of the house. Thankfully the mess was not too bad. But the hole in the wall would take a little time to fix. Mom was not going to be happy with that. When they finished cleaning up what they could they all set around waiting for the Emerson Matriarch and for grandpa to return.
It was a quarter till 11 when the laugh of Lucy came to the door. There was a jingle of keys and then the door opened. Lucy was smiling when she entered the room and tall well-dressed man entered behind her. Her eyes drifted around the room and saw her boys and she was hoping for, friends, and then they lit on her daughter.
"Melody!" she gasped and rushed towards her daughter.
"Mom." Mel said and hugged her mother.
Mel released her mother and she turned to introduce her to Max. Max reached over to shake her hand. When she politely returned the gesture, she made sure to release some of her power. He felt it when they shook hands, and he knew that she knew what he was. She was a witch, and he was a vampire. And in the end, she would be the more powerful.
"What happened to the wall?" Lucy asked as she stared at the gaping hole in the wall.
"Would you like to explain Max?" Melody asked, "Or shall I?"
"What?" Lucy asked confused.
Max took off his glasses and placed them in his pocket. With a heavy sigh he looked over at David and the other two boys.
"I'm sorry, Lucy. This is all my fault. David and my boys misbehaved. I told you; boys need a mother." he said to Lucy.
Lucy looked confused, "Max, what are you talking about?
"I knew it! You are the head vampire." Sam said like he had an epiphany.
"Sam, don't start this again." Lucy said sternly.
Sam looked affronted by his mother's words, but he still placed himself between Max and her. He would do his best to protect her. She was too loving and so naive to the world. More than she knew. Star moved forward as realization struck her.
"You. You're the secret that David has been protecting." she said.
Looking at Star and then over to Max followed to Michael, Lucy asked, "Who is this?"
"But.. But you passed all the tests." Alan said confused as he looked over at Edgar.
"Don't ever invite a vampire into your house, you silly boy. It renders you powerless." Max stated superiorly.
"Did you know that?" Sam whispered to Edgar and Alan.
Edgar squared up, "Of course. Everyone knows that " despite the fact they knew he did not.
Lucy was exasperated, "Has everyone gone crazy? What's the matter with all of you?"
"It was you I was after all along, Lucy." Max started.
"What?" Lucy stammered.
He continued and Mel knew where this was going, "I knew that if I could get Sam and Michael into the family there was no way you could say no. It was all going to be so perfect, Lucy. Just like one big happy family. Your boys. And my boys."
"Great. The bloodsucking Brady Bunch. Edgar said as he and Alan moved beside Sam to block Lucy.
"I still want you, Lucy. I have not changed my mind about that." Max snarled as he shifted to vampire mode.
Michael jumped over to try and protect his mother, "I didn't invite you in this time, Max."
"Michael! Melody!" Lucy cried out as her eldest children squared up with Max.
Max swatted Michael like he was an annoying fly. Sam rushed forward. He was so brave trying to help but he was still just a boy.
"Don't touch my mother or sister." he said, and Max grabbed him around the neck.
"Don't fight me, Lucy. It's so much better if you don't fight." He said and held out his hand, completely ignoring Mel.
"Don't do it, Mom! Please don't!" Sam pleaded as Lucy began to move forward.
Melody put herself between Lucy and Max. She reached up and took off her glasses. Lucy grabbed her shoulder to push her aside. Lucy loved her children more than anything in the world. She would do anything for them to protect them. Melody stood firm and even as Max snarled at her, she did not waver. She opened her eyes and looked straight at Max. Her eyes glowed bright green and before everyone in the room, Max released Sam as he shrieked. There before their eyes the ancient vampire was turning to stone. He jerked around trying to stop the progress when the sound of grandpa's custom horn blared, and he plowed into the house with a sharpened fence post tied to the front of his jeep. The sharpened post flew off the jeep and through the chest of Max as Michael pushed him into the path of the flying projectile. The stake threw him back and into the fireplace where the vampire exploded.
There was silence after the deafening explosion. Then after the pause everyone moved. Lucy rushed to all of her children, checking each one to make sure they were okay. They responded in affirmative, and she moved to check the others.
"It's over." Star gasped as Michael held her close.
"Is everybody okay?" he asked and looked around the room.
"How much do you think we should charge them for this?" Edgar asked Alan.
"Not a damn thing. If you had of left well enough alone and had not murdered their brother, they would have left you all alone." Melody snarked.
"What?" Lucy gasped, "You all killed someone?"
"Just a vampire." Alan said like it was natural.
"You killed Marko. We were asleep." Paul cried out.
"David?" Dwayne asked when noticed that David was staring at his own hands.
Everyone noticed and Melody walked up to him. She grabbed his hand and smiled at him when he looked up at her. He felt it more acutely than the other two. He had been a vampire for so long that the oppression of the sire bond felt like ten-ton weights around his soul.
"You are all free." Melody said to him.
"You mean free, free?" Paul asked.
"Yes, you are no longer tied to a sire." she answered them.
"We can finally move. We can do anything now." David said in awe as he looked at Melody.
"Yes. I can make you some daylight jewelry if you want." She offered.
"What's daylight jewelry?" Paul asked.
Melody grinned at him. He was adorable. He was like a curious puppy. His attention jumped around just as easy as a little cute puppy's as well. He would be so excited for a piece after she told him.
"I can make it where you can walk in the sun again." she stated and waited for it to register in their brains.
"Excuse me. I must have heard you wrong." Edgar interrupted, "Did you just say you can make it where they can walk around in the daylight?"
"Yes. I can allow them to be in the sun again." she said and watched as their eyes grew huge.
"Please." Dwayne said.
"Take me to your cave then." she said, and David scooped her up.
Before anyone could object, they, all disappeared out the front door.
AN: Yeah, that was long. But I have more planned.
